exclusive interview with "the descendants" cast ahead. >> just a powerful sit-down. also, big night last night. that debate. former vice president joe biden against the rest of the pack. we've got all the reaction and the big moments coming up. >> a lot of reaction to that. first we begin with breaking news. firefighters are racing to contain a deadly gas explosion in kentucky. flames spreading to homes forcing evacuations. abc's steve osunsami starts us off with the very latest. good morning to you, steve. >> reporter: good morning to you, michael. more than 75 people had to be moved from their homes and the families say as they drove away they could feel the flames from the fire. this was the sound and the scene early this morning south of lexington, kentucky. a massive natural gas pipeline exploded roaring flames into the sky. >> it's so bright. >> all units be advised we are receiving multiple calls of an explosion of some kind.

>> if i zoom in real close, you can see the flames perfectly. >> reporter: at least one person confirmed dead and five others left with nonlife threatening injuries. several nearby hopes caught fire. people had to run for shelterer. >> it was like an atomic bomb went off. >> just a big roar and fire going all the way up in the sky as far as you could see. our windows were shaking really bad and our doors -- the ground, you could hear the ground just moving and tumbling and rolling. and then we got to feeling the heat from the fire. and so we got in our vehicle and took out, got away from it. >> that fire created an immense amount of smoke and heat and debris. >> reporter: the fire shot up 300 feet in the sky. the fire ball was so big it showed up on the weather radar.

crews have been able to shut off the gas. this pipeline stretches thousands of miles from the mexico border to new york city. michael? >> all right, thank you so much, steve. amy? now to those severe summer storms hitting the northeast. flash floods trapping families and take a look at this. water pouring into a bus station in staten island. rob marciano has been tracking this all for us. it was quite the day yesterday. >> yeah, a couple days. we had so much humidity in the air. the rain came down heavy and hard. this is in massachusetts. look at that flash flooding there. 74-mile-per-hour wind gusts at boston logan and hundreds of flight cancellations because of that. over 100 damage reports and the last days have been rough. >> reporter: overnight torrential rains and damaging winds ripping through the northeast. and powerful lightning. this bolt over the patriots gillette stadium. while in new york heavy

downpours causing flash flooding across the metro area. watch as this bus quickly fills with water. these passengers just trying to keep their feet dry. and thunderstorms drenching new england. submerging parts of massachusetts. flash flooding trapping a pregnant mom and her small child inside their car. half an our later this tow truck pulling them to safety. >> we're thankfu i mean it's just a car. it's okay. very thankful. god is good all the time. >> reporter: in winthrop this marina bearing the brunt of 54-mile-per-hour winds. >> scariest thing i've ever seen in my life. >> reporter: residents stunned from the amount of damage done to their neighborhood. fallen trees crashing into homes knocking out power lines. >> i'm in shock. >> reporter: new hampshire recovering from similar damage. emergency crews racing to clear streets and restore electricity. and in philadelphia, storms wreaking havoc there too. winds strong enough to blow this section of metal bleachers into the middle of a football field and uproot this tree right out

of concrete, crushing the car parked next to it. such dangerous conditions across the northeast. these trees knocked over. so important to get inside to the lowest level of your home. tonight will be quieter, dryer, more comfortable. but, we're watching the tropics likely to develop in the atlantic. we've got at least a week to deal with that. that's going to be probably a tropical storm if not a hurricane and track toward the u.s. bringing rain to florida and parts of the southeast coast, saturday, two to three inches but not much in the way of tropical development. flossie now a tropical storm and another one off the coast of mexico. erick at one point was a category 4 storm. here's the track. we keep it south of hawaii later on today, then decreasing in intensity but will bring rough surf and rain and gusty winds. this is flossy, the forecast track goes for hawaii. this one hopefully goes north of it and weakening as it gets to the somewhat cooler waters around those islands.

over to you guys. >> all right. thanks, rob. busy summer for you. the race for the white house and a heated night on the debate stage. ten more democratic candidates battling it out in detroit. front-runner joe biden facing his toughest attacks yet on his record of deportations, criminal justice and much more. abc's mary bruce was right there for it all. mary, so much of this ended up being about biden and a kamala harris showdown. >> reporter: hey, cecilia, voters looking for a rematch last night certainly got it after his lack luster performance in the first debate, joe biden came prepared for round two and launched a staed fast defense of his record and came ready for a fight but so did his opponents. kicking off his rematch with senator kamala harris, joe biden had a simple request. >> go easy on me, kid. >> but harris made it clear she has no plans of easing up hammering him on health care. >> your plan does not cover everyone in america. by your staff's and your own definition. you do nothing to hold the insurance companies to task for what they have been doing to american families.

>> reporter: biden fired back saying harris' plan will cost too much and take too long to implement. >> this idea is a bunch of malarkey what we're talking about here. i don't know what math you do in california but i tell you, that's a lot of money and there will be a deductible. >> reporter: after her strong performance in the first debate, harris was also forced to play defense. congressman tulsi gabbard slamming her record as a prosecutor. >> in the case of those who were on death row, innocent people, you actually blocked evidence from being revealed that would have freed them until you were forced to do so. there is no excuse for that and the people who suffered under your reign as prosecutor, you owe them an apology. >> my entire career i have been personally opposed to the death penalty and that has never changed. i dare anyone who was in a position to make that possession, to face the people i have faced, to say i will not

seek the death penalty. >> reporter: it was biden's record that dominated the night under relentless assault. president obama's former housing secretary hitting the former vice president on the high rate of deportations under the obama administration. >> mr. vice president, it looks like one of us has learned the lessons of the past and one of us hasn't. what we need are politicians who actually have some guts on this issue. >> i have guts enough to say his plan doesn't make sense. >> reporter: new york mayor bill de blasio piling on. >> if you're debating donald trump he's not going to let you off the hook. so did you say those deportations were a good idea or did you go to the president and say this is a mistake and we shouldn't do them? which one? >> i was vice president. i am not the president. i keep my recommendation to him in private. >> reporter: on criminal justice

reform cory booker and joe biden going head to head. >> if you want to compare records and frankly i'm shocked that you do, i'm happy to do that. >> there is nothing done for the entire eight years he was mayor. there was nothing done to deal with the police department that was corrupt? there is a saying in my community. you're dipping into kool-aid and you don't even know the flavor. you need to come to the city and see the reforms we put in place. >> reporter: the candidates spent more time attacking each other than the president but senator kirsten gillibrand getting a laugh with this shot at trump. >> the first thing that i'm going to do when i'm president is i'm going to clorox the oval office. >> reporter: by the end of the night biden was brushing off the attacks. >> well, i love your affection for me. you spent a lot of time with me. >> reporter: now, biden did have a few flubs including in the final moments where he urged his supporters to go to joe30330. now, it's not clear if he was trying to reference a phone number so supporters could get text messages about his campaign or direct them to a website but cecelia, the problem is that is not his campaign's website and it appears that a pete buttigieg

supporter scooped up that url. >> you mentioned that comment telling kamala harris go easy on me, kid, before the debate even started. that's generating some controversy this morning and harris was kind of forced to respond. >> reporter: yeah, look, joe biden certainly has his own signature folksy style but he was criticized. a lot saw it as patronizing and her campaign was quick to point out and question the former vice president calling the 54-year-old senator a kid. but harris says she was not offended by it adding nobody is going to define me. >> another thing we saw, mary, some of those lower tier candidates really trying to distinguish themselves especially ahead of this next debate qualifying for this next debate, abc's debate next month trying to gain traction. >> reporter: yeah cecelia these debates are a chance for these less have known candidates to have a break through moment. we saw tulsi gabbard having some success with that when she grabbed the spotlight and challenged kamala harris, in fact, on google she was the most searched competitor of the night but a lot of people, it seems, were simply looking to know who was up and who was down on

google at one point an over 2,000% increase over the search of who is winning this debate? cecelia? >> they want that answer. thanks so much. michael? >> thank you, cecilia. now to the search for that missing navy pilot after a fighter jet crashed during a training mission in death valley national park injuring seven people on the ground. kaylee hartung is in california outside the hospital where those victims were treated. good morning, kaylee. >> reporter: good morning, michael. the canyons of death valley particularly the one known as star wars canyon are familiar training territory for military pilots. flying low is an important skill for them to have and they provide a unique opportunity to hone that skill. the navy said never before has a crash happened at this site. this morning the search under way for a navy pilot after an explosive crash in california's death valley.

>> just be advised that is in the death valley national park. >> reporter: authorities say two planes similar to the ones seen here were flying together through this certified military training route when one f-18 fighter jet went down. smoke seen billowing from the steep cliffside as debris burned. >> the pieces of the aircraft were smaller than a dinner plate and scattered over a large area. >> reporter: the pilot of that jet is still missing. search and rescue teams immediately dispatched. >> it is in star wars canyon. >> reporter: originally named rainbow canyon, the star wars nickcame comes to the likeness of tatooine featured in this saga. it's known for unbeatable views of fighter jets speeding through the colorful canyon walls. at the time of the crash seven tourists who were among those watching nearby suffered cuts and scrapes as shrapnel flew through the air. >> we were just behind and the plane come like this. >> reporter: their injuries minor but the status of the pilot remains unknown.

>> we're looking for an aviator out there and hoping for the best. >> reporter: as six of those spectators were brought to this nearby hospital yesterday, treated and discharged. another remains in a hospital in los angeles with more serious injuries. as the search for the missing pilot and the investigation into what caused that crash continue, the popular overlook is closed. cecelia? >> okay, kaylee, thank you. we turn to new developments involving osama bin laden's son believed to be killed in a takedown. u.s. officials saying he was being groomed to lead al qaeda. our foreign correspondent james longman has the latest on this. good morning, james. >> reporter: good morning, cecilia. osama bin laden was perhaps the world's most infamous terrorist and now we know his son an apparent heir is also dead. two u.s. officials tell abc news that hamza bin laden believed to be about 30 was killed at some point over the last two years and u.s. intelligence played a role in the operation but it remains unclear where or how he died. back in february the state department offered a $1 million

reward for his capture calling him a key leader. his last public statements came last year when he threatened his native saudi arabia with violent jihad. papers found in the compound where his father was killed in 2011 show he may have been groomed for a prominent role in al qaeda, cecilia. >> he's really being, as you said, labeled as a key leader. do you have a sense of how significant this takedown was? >> reporter: well, certainly on a symbolic level the bin laden name is a powerful recruiting tool for al qaeda. they've been losing ground to isis for some time so arguably i guess they represent a greater threat now. >> amy? now to a stunning scene in pennsylvania. take a look at this. it's a debris field and it's all that remains of a home after a massive explosion injured at least four people. just moments before this house exploded firefighters responded to a call from the homeowner saying they smelled gas. the homeowner and three firefighters were injured but thankfully remarkably everyone made it out alive just in the nick of time, michael.

>> thank goodness for that, amy. now to a wild rescue in iowa. police racing to save a pair of rafters struggling in a raging river holding on for dear life after their raft went over a dam and flipped. will reeve has the story. >> hold the light. >> reporter: watch as police officers scramble to save a couple trapped in the turbulent waters of an iowa dam after their raft capsized in a river. >> don't let go. >> what happens with the dam, that water and backwash starts to spin and it's almost like a washing machine as it just churns and churns. if you get caught in that and it's at least once or twice a year somebody does, very rarely will you make it out alive. >> reporter: the rescue all caught on police body cameras. using a rope to pull the couple in, listen as the officers struggle to hold on. >> get your head up. give me some room. don't pull me. >> reporter: at times the powerful current dragging them beneath the surface. >> she's under. stop.

stop! >> reporter: at last the officers get the couple to safety. >> whoa, whoa, whoa. >> i think the video tells the story pretty well. those officers took a lot of physical effort, teamwork and a little bit of time too. >> the couple was treated at a hospital and released. the des moines police deptment said the officers dried off and went to work. they were helped in this rescue by a good samaritan so hats off to everyone involved. >> you can see how exhausted the ones who were rescued. imagine the rescuers. >> everyone just putting everything on the line. glad it turned out well. >> thanks, will. now another thing perhaps you have to see to believe. take a look. yep. that's a herd of goats on the loose parading through a neighborhood just outside of seattle, washington. so the community actually hires these goats to keep the weeds in check between the houses, wow, but you could say they were a little overzealous.

the mother of that 19-year-old finnegan elder says there must be some explanation as to why her son acted the way authorities say he did. allegedly stabbing that officer 11 times with a seven-inch blade. >> reporter: this morning parents of the two american teenagers accused of murdering an italian police officer speaking out. in an interview with the italian newspaper "la stampa," the mother of finnegan elder who is accused of stabbing the man claiming her son is a thoughtful boy. the only explanation that i can give myself, it means he was terrorized and so he reacted in this way. elder's father arriving in rome wednesday with the family's attorney to see his son now spending his seventh day in jail. police accuse elder and 18-year-old gabriel natale of stabbing of the officer after a drug deal went wrong allegedly elder stabbed the officer

times. new instagram photos emerge now being broadcast on italian television showing him in san francisco holding a large knife. this photo in front of the pantheon possibly taken hours before the incident. italian police now looking at these images as part of their investigation. >> the kid had a knife. at least in san francisco certainly in america that's not a super surprising thing. people carry it for protection. >> reporter: elder's uncle was asked if he collected knives, replying his mother says she had seen a knife similar to those other teens in his circle had. in a statement the father of the other teenager gabriel natale claiming his son is innocent and distraught by what's happened saying his son didn't know his friend was armed and only became away of what actually happened after his arrest. however that contradicts what natale had reportedly told police earlier. so many questions still about this case. >> a lot of questions still to be answered. thank you so much, whit. now to that terrifying

escape for american tourists traveling on a small cruise ship when it suddenly caught fire forcing them to jump into shark-infested waters. the entire thing caught on camera and gio benitez has this story. good morning, gio. >> reporter: hey, amy, good morning. yeah, those passengers had seen the sharks earlier in the day and now they were faced with an excruciating decision, stay on that burning boat or jump into the shark-infested waters. they jumped. >> stick together. grab each other's arms. >> reporter: you're watching nearly 30 people forced to jump off their burning ship in the middle of the night and into shark-infested waters in the galapagos islands. >> are you guys holding on? >> reporter: 16 vacationers and 11 crew members vacating after their boat filled with smoke. >> hold your breath. >> reporter: frightened passengers grabbing life jackets fearing for their safety. >> whistle is right here.

>> reporter: whistle bartley from kabc was on board and immediately started filming. >> it was a perfect trip until the last night when the boat caught on fire. >> reporter: she was traveling with her friend dana, a nurse from california. >> all hell broke loose and got chaotic. >> smoke filled the boat. they told us there was a fire in the engine room. >> reporter: barely able to breathe the passengers were left with no other option but to evacuate even though they had seen sharks in the water earlier that day. >> we then did have to jump off from the back of the boat. >> we have to jump in. >> next. >> reporter: once in the water another problem, their two life rafts wouldn't deploy. their guide calling out everyone's name to ensure everyone was safe. >> naomi, austin, valerie, dana. >> reporter: all were accounted for, the terrified passengers bobbing in those shark-infested waters for an hour. >> they're coming. >> reporter: the life raft finally deploying.

their homes and as they were driving away, they report they could feel the flames, the flames shot up 300 feet into the air. the fireball was so large, you could see it on the weather radar. police have had to search for missing people. this was a 30-inch natural gas pipeline that ruptured which if you're not familiar with is quite wide. it stretches for thousands of miles from texas at the mexico border all the way to new york city. amy. >> wow. what incredibly stunning images. thanks for that, steve. turning to new details on that overwhelming response to consumer credit reporting company exercise's nearly $700 million settlement with the federal trade commission and others, if you thought the $125 cash payout option was a no-brainer, well, the ftc now says you might be disappointed because you probably won't be receiving anywhere near that amount. the nationwide data breach back in 2017, you'll remember, exposed the private information

but still, you know, i was fearful and held out on some of the details that in turn caused us to end. >> and you were very apologetic on tuesday night. seemed very sincere about it. did you have to do some soul searching to get to that point? >> you know, it was one of those things that i knew how sorry i was, i knew how much i loved her and how her happiness was in my best interest and, you know, would have been easy to turn away and not even show up to "after the final rose" and i just wanted to be there for her so that she could have her closure and so that not only in her eyes but in the eyes of everyone else, you know, let everyone know that i am sorry, especially her. >> did you get your closure out of all this? >> it's -- i do have closure now knowing, you know, that she has moved on, but it still hurts because i love her and i do want the best for her but ultimately

i have to just move on. >> now we saw the finale and when you guys got back together but have you talked to her since? >> i have not. no. >> any plans or intentions to reach out at any point? >> i'm sure we'll reconnect on some -- in some way. we're on decent terms with each other and we can, you know, still be friends, i hope, and that's all i could ask for. >> we saw the end of your engagement but saw something unexpected from hannah. she asked tyler out on a date. >> right. >> how did you feel about that? >> you know, i had a feeling something was up and i couldn't really put a finger on it when i was there that day. i know there was a lot of nerves and a lot of tension, but, you know, her happiness is my best interest. i want her to be happy and tyler is one of my friends. he's a great guy and, you know, if that's what is supposed to be then i support that.
