safely. a father and son in maryland are being called heroes for fighting off a would-be robber at a 7-eleven. >> paul and dad jim were at the counter when the suspect came in, dropped his weapon, picked it up and announced a robbery. paul grabbed the gun, wrestled the guy outside. a brief struggle ensued. the suspect took off. now paul sporting a big shiner. >> i would fight again. i have a daughter, i have a girlfriend. all i could think about was, what about my family was in here right now? and i wasn't here and no one did anything? >> oh my gosh. his father helped find the suspect, who was arrested. police advise against taking on an armed gunman for obvious reasons. they say the gun didn't fire because it wasn't loaded properly. thank goodness. >> just a wild scene there. >> yeah. >> glad everyone's okay. heroic effort, but yes, don't take on any gunmen.

>> yes. american rapper a$ap rocky has taken the stand in his assault trial in sweden. >> he's accused of beating a teenager there last month. he claims he acted in self-defense but prosecutors aren't buying it as we hear from abc's michelle franzen. >> reporter: rapper a$ap rocky testifying thursday in a stockholm courtroom, describing events as he said they unfolded outside a swedish bar on june 30th. the platinum-selling artist, real name rakim mayors, describing how he and his entourage tried to avoid a confrontation with men they say persistently followed them. >> we didn't want to provoke these guys, we wanted to defuse the situation and get away from those guys. >> reporter: until, according to his testimony, one of the men, 19-year-old mustafa jaffarry, picked a fight. >> next thing i know i see my security guard tim lifting

jafari by his collar. jafari proceeded to swing and hit him and he hit him with headphones twice. >> reporter: a$ap rocky saying despite multiple appeals, jafari and his friend refused to back off. >> that's when i intervened and i threw jafari to the ground, i stepped on his arm. i kicked his arm. my friends came to help. i saw jafari's friend charging at me. he and i, we pushed, shoved for a bit. right after that, my security guard tim came and turned me around and walked me up the block. >> reporter: footage obtained by tmz appears to show the rapper and a bodyguard grabbing then throwing a man in a white t-shirt to the ground, then beating and kicking him. the musician saying he acted in self-defense, posting this video to instagram, allegedly showing the moments leading up to that altercation. >> we don't want to fight y'all, we're not trying to go to jail. >> reporter: the rapper's mother in the courtroom, this case garnering international attention. if convicted he faces up to two years in prison. michelle franzen, abc news, new york.

good friday morning. thank you for joining us. glad to be with you. so glad that we have will reeve here. we do begin on a sad note this morning with another tragedy for the kennedy family. the young granddaughter of robert f. kennedy has died. >> saoirse kennedy hill suffered an apparent overdose at the kennedy family's compound on cape cod. she was just 22 years old. shaun chaiyabhat of our station in boston has more. >> reporter: paramedics rushed to the kennedy compound just after 2:30 p.m. 911 calls coming in for medical emergency. >> engine 6 on location. >> bring that ambulance closer to the front door, three minutes. >> we're ready to come downstairs. >> reporter: sources say 22-year-old saoirse kennedy hill died of apparent drug overdose. the granddaughter to robert f. kennedy found inside the kennedy retreat. >> not just the family but the whole nation has trouble with

were no "send her back" chants. the president slammed the four congresswomen of color known as the squad as left-wing extremists without mentioning them by name. >> for decades these communities have been run exclusively by democrat politicians. and it's been total one-party control of the inner cities. for 100 years it's been one-party control, and look at them. we can name one after another, but i won't do tt. because i don't want to be controversial. >> the president also pounced on the democratic presidential candidates. he said they spent more time attacking president obama during the debate than they spent attacking him. the president also addressed the intensifying trade war, telling supporters until there's a deal, the u.s. will be, quote, taxing the hell out of china. hours earlier he announced

sweeping new tariffs on chinese imports set to take effect next month. the dow plunged on the news, closing down 280 points. abc's kyra phillips has more on the tariffs and how americans could feel the pinch. >> reporter: president trump escalating his trade war with china, slapping a new 10% tariff on $300 billion worth of chinese products. >> for many years, china has been taking out hundreds of billions of dollars a year and rebuilding china. it's time that we rebuild our country. >> reporter: the tariffs mean american shoppers could see prices go up on everything, from clothing to smartphones to tvs to toys. the chamber of commerce saying the president's move will inflict greater pain on american businesses, farmers, workers, and consumers, and undermine an otherwise strong u.s. economy. >> what do you say to american business owners and consumers who are going to pay the price for these tariffs, sir? >> what would you say when china, for the last 20 years,

has been taking hundreds of billions of dollars out of our country? so now it's time that we change things around. if they don't want to trade with us anymore, that would be fine with me. >> reporter: but china buys billions of dollars in crops from american farmers. and they've responded with tariffs of their own. in may with the trade war in full swing, we spoke with john keefener, a soybean farmer from illinois. >> i'm preparing for the worst. >> reporter: china bought 60% of u.s. soybean exports before the trade war started. not anymore. >> a lot of farmers are going to have to come up with alternative sources of income. >> reporter: kyra phillips, abc news, the white house. north korea has launched yet another round of missiles, the third weapons test in just over a week. officials in south korea believe at least two short-range ballistic missiles were fired into the sea. the north has expressed increased frustration over stalled nuclear talks and upcoming military drills between the u.s. and south korea. trump played down the launches calling them very standard.

he says they won't stop him from negotiating with kim jong-un. residents who witnessed a gas pipeline explosion in kentucky said it looked like an atomic bomb detonating. the blast sent a fireball 300 feet into the air. the intensity of the fire scorched everything in the immediate area. one woman was killed. police believe she died when she left her home and was overtaken by the heat. at least five houses were completely destroyed and several agencies are looking into the cause. in south florida, a driver died after plowing through detour signs into a highway construction zone. the driver smashed into a crane which collapsed onto the suv. police say toxicology tests are under way to determine if drugs or alcohol played a role in the crash. fire crews say they're beginning to mop up after a wind-fueled brush fire threatened homes and businesses in san diego. the fire exploded when flames engulfed an industrial property stacked with wooden pallets and sent huge plumes of black smoke

into the air and all those flames. police issued evacuation orders to a nearby community college along with some homes and businesses. those orders have since been lifted. amazingly no structures have been lost and no injuries were reported. a blood test to detect possible signs of alzheimer's is in the works. researchers in missouri say the test measures protein deposits in the brain that are a risk factor for the disease. scientists say it identified those deposits faster than brain scans. they believe the procedure is up to 94% accurate, but they say it will be years before it's widely available. major league baseball has handed down suspensions for tuesday's chaos in cincinnati. >> the reds/pirates brawl started when cincinnati's amir garrett charged the pittsburgh dugout, taking on the whole team. six players, both managers, are being punished. the pirates' keone kela got ten games, garrett received eight. the players can appeal their suspensions and play while

cape cod's long nook beach was temporarily shut down after a state police chopper crew spotted some great white sharks swimming very close to that shore. marine mammal experts warn the summer is peak shark season on the cape, although attacks on people are rare. experts do recommend people don't venture past waist-deep water, and if you see any seals, stay out. >> oh my gosh. so you can't really go swimming, and, will, you're really

familiar not only with this area but with sharks. >> yes. i have been following sharks, i've been tracking sharks for abc news all summer. >> you've been tagging sharks. >> tracking sharks on cape cod, tagging them with some researchers, which was a crazy experience. and to have grown up actually going to that beach was surreal. but definitely good to follow them and stay out of the water when you're near them. >> and fortunately all your time growing up on that beach, you didn't run into my sharks. >> no, i have all my appendages, i'm good. a group of campers in new hampshire had their field trip cut short by a multi vehicle accident. >> they were on a school bus in salem. a pickup truck was pushed into the bus after it was hit by a dump truck. 20 people including 17 kids were taken to a hospital with minor injuries. most were treated and quickly released. in new york prosecutors have

put on hold the case against an iraq veteran and father charged in the deaths of his 1-year-old twins after he forgot them in the back seat of his overheated car. >> the father in court yesterday holding his 4-year-old son, his wife by his side, saying it was a tragic mistake. but it was just one of the latest in a series of hot car deaths this summer. and it's compelling at least one group of moms to take action. here's abc's diane macedo. >> i screamed, oh my god, the baby. i was shouting, get back in the car, the baby's in the other car. >> reporter: it took only minutes to turner erin holly's world upside down. on a hot summer day in 2017, she and her husband accidentally left their 5-week-old son finn locked in a car. they raced back and luckily when they arrived on the scene, a miracle. >> the car was still cool when we got back to it, and he was perfectly fine. he was still asleep when we got there. >> reporter: now holly is a mom with a message.

>> if this could happen to our family, when we firmly believed it never could, then it absolutely can happen to anyone. >> reporter: erin is part of an organization called kids in cars which advocates for tougher children's safety measures in the auto industry. jeanette fennel is the founder. she's dedicated her life to making sure the auto industry implements those changes. some automakers like gm, nissan, and hyundai, are getting on board voluntarily. gm says the majority of their 2019 models include rear seat reminder technology, and by 2020 all models will. for 2019, nissan added hot car child alerts to some of its most popular models, including the rogue and altima. in many models like seen here the alert is displayed on a dashboard, reminding the driver to check the back seat. fennel says most carmakers are not going far enough. >> the key is any technology that is added to the vehicle should detect the presence of a

child. now there's a couple of vehicles, a hyundai santa fe, palisade, and there's a kia telluride, where the kia and the hyundai vehicles go that extra step that we need, is when you lock your vehicle and you walk away, if it senses any motion in your back seat or third row if have that, the vehicle, after 20 seconds, it will start beeping and the lights will start blinking. so everybody would know that there is a child at peril. >> reporter: car seats are also incorporating technology to alert parents when a child is left behind. right now only two companies have models on the market, even flow and cybex. when i put the call out for advice on social media, parents offered homemade hacks. many said leaving something critical in the back seat is the best, like a purse or wallet. megan suggested, leave your phone in the back seat next to baby.

if he's not confirmed the justice secretary would be next in line but she's already said she doesn't want the job. a statement from the kennedy family says their hearts are shattered by the death of robert f. kennedy's granddaughter. saoirse kennedy hill suffered an apparent overdose at the kennedy compound. she was a member of the class of 2020 at boston college where she majored in communications. during her time in prep school, kennedy hill had written about her struggles with depression and mental illness. she was 22 years old. residents who were forced from their homes by a pipeline explosion in kentucky have been allowed to return. the blast and fire which followed it took the life of one woman and left behind a massive burn scar where houses used to stand. abc's alex perez is there. >> it looks like the gas station exploded. >> reporter: residents jolted away just before 1:30 a.m. by an explosion and a loud roar. >> all units be advised we are receiving multiple calls of an explosion in the area. >> reporter: the 30-inch-high

omar kuzu made his first court appearance yesterday in dallas. federal prosecutors say kuzu and his brother joined isis five years ago. he was captured by the syrian democratic forces earlier this year before being handed over to the fbi. if convicted he faces up to 20 years in prison. the navy has confirmed that the pilot of a fighter jet that crashed in death valley national park was killed. the crash took place during a routine training exercise as the f-18 was flying through what's called "star wars" canyon. the pilot's identity has not been released and the cause of the crash is being investigated. forecasters are tracking storms twirling through the tropics. hurricane erick and tropical storm flossie are churning in the pacific just south of the hawaiian islands. neither storm likely to make a direct hit but erick is approaching the big island today bringing widespread rain, flash floods, and dangerous surf through the weekend. in the atlantic, tropical downpours are developing off the coast of florida packed with enough heavy rain to last for days.
