comfy evening from the 60s to the 70s. we'll talk about the heat this weekend next. here is frances. things are slow at the bay bridge toll plaza because of earlier accidents. you can see traffic is backed up past the 880 overcrossing. if you're considering b.a.r.t., there are ten-minute delays report at the macarthur station due to an earlier problem that has been cleared. a.c.e. train 1 is running about nine minutes late. here is a live shot of interstate 80 in emeryville. great news on interstate 80, the earlier overturned big rig accident east bay 80 at appian has been cleared. a normal friday flow for folks heading towards the bay bridge. developing now, a tragedy for the kennedy family. robert f. kennedy's granddaughter was found dead at the kennedy compound. now "the new york times" he ports it was the result of an

apparent overdose. she's one of the 11 the compound has been in the kennedy family for decades. the u.s. ramps up its trade war with china. president trump announced an additional 10% tariff on $300 billion in goods starting september 1st. abc 7 news reporter megan tevrizian is in new york with how this could affect the prices you pay. >> reporter: good morning, reggie and kumasi. these tariffs are expected to start in about a month from now. they could affect prices you pay for television, cell phones or your kids' toys. the president touting his new trade policies at a rally in cincinnati overnight. >> we've taken the toughest ever action to stand up to china's trade abuse. >> reporter: president trump now slapping a new 10% tariff on $300 billion worth of chinese products starting in september.

>> for the last 20 years china has taken hundreds and hundreds of millions of dollars out of our country. >> reporter: the tariffs mean american shoppers could see prices go up on everything from clothing to smart phones to tvs to toys. thchamber of commerce says the president's tariff will inflict great pain on american businesses, farmers, workers and consumers and undermine a otherwise strong u.s. economy. news of the tariffs affected wall street, too. the dow plunged thursday closing down 280 points. >> the goods that are now going to be targeted are ones that would affect ordinary consumers. >> reporter: this latest development, part of a long running and costly trade dispute with china, only days after both sides resumed negotiations. >> china reacted overnight to president trump's latest tariff announcement saying, if these go into effect, they'll take necessary countermeasures. reporting from new york, megan tevrizian, abc 7 news.

a man suspected of sexually assaulting a 12-year-old girl in an alleyway in jail. a person called police saying they saw hill lure the child into an alley near north 4th and east st. johns streets. officers arrived within minutes and arrested him. the jury for the ghost ship trial will resume deliberations on tuesday. the first full day ended yesterday with no decision. ghost ship founder derick almena and creative director max harris are each charged with 36 counts of involuntary manslaughter. as soon as the jury reaches a decision, we'll send an alert via the free abc news app. we're hearing from two survivors in sunday's deadly shooting. >> brynn ota matthews and gabriella gaus were both hit by gunfire. >> i'm going to have a bullet in

community's grieving process. it will be rescheduled for october 1st. puerto rico governor ricardo rossello is expected to step down today. massive protests erupted after sexist and homophobic messages between rossello and his top aides were leaked. his government is in a full-blown crisis. a vote for his handpicked successor was delayed until next week, casting doubt on who will be the next governor. the senate president says he wants to be governor and will not vote for rossello's nominee. it's now unclear who is going to take over. a new report shows women are more likely to be injured while cycling. the reason might surprise you. we're learning more about that dog treat recall we first told you about yesterday. a vet is breaking down the danger to humans. if you're thinking about venturing out on the bay today, notice the areas in yellow, small craft advisory from 2:00 to 9:00. it's going to be

101 in san jose. headlights move northbound. looks good all the way up the peninsula into san francisco. you'll find some fog across the golden gate bridge but no traffic. where there are quite a few delays at the bay bridge toll plaza is back up towards the foot of the maze because of earlier accidents. a new study finds drivers behave more dangerously around female cyclists compared to male cyclists. drives are more likely to pass closer than three feet to women than to men. that only happened when there were no barriers between the bike lane and car lane. it bikers say there is a need for more investment for protected bike lanes rjts it's a mix between an ice cream sandwich and a hot dog. and, yes, it's called the ice dog sandwich. we'll explain that next. >> huh-uh. plus a heads-up before your next order

this morning we're hearing from a vet about a serious dog treat recall that's making people sick. dozens of cases of salmonella

have been traced back to pig ears. they were taken off store shelves wednesday. 127 people in 33 states including california have contracted salmonella. all those cases can be traced back to pig ear dog treats. >> pets are ingesting it and getting it in their mouth, licking owners, licking body parts, open sores. little kids are more susceptible. >> instead of pig ears, dr. burns recommends soft natural treats made in the u.s. the cdc recommends avoiding dog kisses after they eat and washing hands. a jogger who survived a bear encounter in canada caught it on camera. you'll see the bear heading onto the trail, shifting its focus in sherry moore's direction. seconds later it took off. >> when it got up to me and got up on its hind legs, i just remember looking right into its ey, and i thought that's it, i'm done, i'm going to be mauled. i started screaming it like a

peninsula. breeze will keep us cooler at 71. mid to upper 60s in downtown south san francisco and sausalito. mid 60s along the north bay coast. you roll inland and we're about 15 to 20 degrees warmer. along the east bay shore, touched by the sea breeze will be berkeley and oakland. the rest of us in the mid to upper 70s. here is a look at the other area of 90s, fairfield, pittsburg, antioch and brentwood. mid to upper 90s possible saturday. low to mid 90s sunday. 80s comfortab comfortab comfortable 60s along the coast. things looking better on interstate 80 sththan an hour a. the east bay direction an earlier crash at carlson has been cleared. there was a very early morning sig alert at appian.

that is all gone as well. b.a.r.t. still reporting ten-minute delays at macarthur towards west springs and millbrae due to an earlier equipment problem. a.c.e. train 1 is running 13 minutes late right now. as we check out the drive time, westbound 80 highway 4 to the maze, 20 minutes. still slow across the bay bridge with things backed up at the metering lights all the way towards the foot of the maze because of an earlier accident. if you're heading to one of the other bridges, it's a nice ride across the san mateo bridge. that's westbound traffic on the right-hand side. mo no problems on the peninsula right now. it's pretty quiet in the south bay. united airlines is introducing its connection saver tool at sfo on tuesday. it's designed to improve the experience for passengers connecting from one united flight to another. the system assesses whether to hold a flight for a few minutes while connecting passengers -- for connecting passengers while also making sure that people who are already on the flight arrive

with his jet pack suit. richard browning tested the suit on monday in the uk. his company, gravity industries is working with the royal navy. navy officials say they're pushing the boundaries of naval warfare with this new technology. new developments, a federal jury in california has ordered katy perry and her record label pay nearly $2.8 million because they copied a christian rap song. >> the jury decided that perry's 2013 hit "dark horse" copied a song by christian rapper flame. it took five years for him to win the lawsuit. the award fell short of the $20 million that the lawyers wanted. perry herself will pay just over $550,000 and the record label will pick up the rest. >> she does have the money. but it's still a lot of money. your next order of guacamole could be fake. >> restaurants are turning to fake guac because of

skyrocketing avocado prices. a heat wave hit california causing the avocado yield to be much slower. some taco stands and restauranteurs have turned to squash. >> you make this fake one using a summer squash that looks almost like a zucchini. i've had some people say it also works as a zucchini. you blend them and get them to the texture like guacamole. it's eerily similar in texture. >> i'm fine with it, but tell me. don't charge me ten bucks for it. >> i'm not fine with it at all. >> many restaurants are not revealing that they're making the switch. how do you tell the difference? the guacamole made with squash is thinner and more watery. i'm questioning everything. i had guac the other day. was it real? >> i think you have to be able to tell the difference. which should try it. i think it's so distinct.

all right. let's divert away and come back to that, though. first we'll come back about whether -- maybe it has a fog horn on it. here is a look at what we're seeing outside. except in parts of the north bay, we're cloudy this morning. this is the way it looks at the golden gate bridge. the clouds are descending upon you. watch out for some drizzle, also, during the morning commute. we ill see sunshine a little quicker today. that means you'll need the sunglasses a little sooner. a little warmer at lunch. upper 70s, upper 80s. temperatures back to average as the warming trend begins today. still 75 to 85 as we head through the evening hours. here is frances. it's a much better commute right now. we had so many early morning problems, but they have cleared. here is a live look at 680 in walnut creek. that's southbound traffic on the right. you can see it's flowing well past geary, past highway 24. as you head to the bay bridge

toll plaza, things back up to the food of the maze. now in the north bay, this is 101, right-hand side traffic moving southbound past north san pedro. as you check out drive times, no delays in that area, southbound 680 walnut creek to dublin, 14 minutes. southbound 101 from santa rosa to san francisco, a 49-minute ride. no problems either through the screws mo santa cruz mountains from highway 1 to los gatos, 22 minutes. turning to abc 7 news reporter amy hollyfield. >> she's live along i-80 with more on an early morning crash and the bizarre cause. amy? >> reporter: this isn't one you see every day. this is a dangerous situation. traffic is moving just fine now, a friday gift to drivers because it wasn't looking good there for a while. here is what happened. a big rig overturned. it was about 3:30 this morning. it wasn't that driver's fault though. officials say he was trying to avoid a camry that was at a complete stop in the slow lane.

authorities believe the driver of that camry was intoxicated. >> the driver was passed out and/or sleeping in the driver's seat of the camry in the slow lane and the big rig driver was able to avoid him thankfully. >> this is east bay 80 in pinole away from oakland and san francisco. this is at the appian way exit. they got all the lanes reopened at 5:30 this morning and no one was hurt. live in pinole, amy hollyfield abc 7 news. new this morning, two chp officers have minor injuries after their cruiser crashed in the south bay. this happened just after 12:30 in southbound 280 in san jose. chp says the officers were trying to pull a car over when they lost control of the cruiser and then rolled over. you can see the trunk of the chp car damaged and the rear windshield knocked out. it's not clear how and why the

officers lost control. in the east bay the chp is investigating a solo car crash that left a woman dead on westbound highway 24 near saint stephens drive. the honda civic hit a tree. when officers got there, the car was fully engulfed in flames. the woman was found dead in the car. stories of hee otherism and heartache continues. >> thousands of people crowded downtown for a vigil last night. >> there were a lot of angels that day. >> when you talk about angels, you have to mention 10-year-old miranda. a 3-year-old boy whose parents got shot, miranda said it was active shooter drills she learned in school that helped her and guide her quick response. >> he kind of didn't know what was going on. i covered his mouth because of

course he was crying and screaming because he didn't know what to do. >> she says it is still hard for her to process everything that's happened. mental health agencies want to help her with that healing process. we have information about available resources listed on our website. the gilroy foundation established a special fund for victims of sunday's shooting. we have a link on our website, abc7news.com, and how to donate to the victim's relief fund. other festivals are tightening security. fremont's festival of the arts will open tomorrow. sky 7 flew over the parkway yesterday as crews installed security cameras. there will also be steel barricades. organizers working closely with police. >> uniform s.w.a.t. team members will be in the crowds. they changed their level of firearms that they'll be carrying, and there will be more police officers out there. >> an estimated 380,000 people will attend the festival this weekend. other bay area events are

tightening security including the 75th annual santa clara county fair in san jose. law enforcement is patrolling the entrance. there's also a security checkpoint just after the ticket gate. once inside there's even more law enforcement patrolling the fairgrounds. there are similar upgraded security measures at the sonoma county fair. in the east bay the man accused of stabbing to death a young woman on b.a.r.t. is scheduled to enter a plea. last month a judge ruled john lee cowell is competent to stand trial. he's accused of stabbing 18-year-old nia wilson in oakland. her sister was also stabbed. her sister survived. last december a judge ruled cowell was not competent to stand trial. since then cowell has undergone psychiatric treatment. new this morning, thousands of u.s. troops may soon be coming home from afghanistan. "the washington post" reports a troop withdrawal is part of a proposed peace deal with the taliban. it would cut the number of

american troops from 14,000 to 9,000. the trump administration has held eight rounds of talks the taliban. they warn significant challenges remain. governor newsom returns to san francisco this morning. the plan to upgrade california's 911 system he'll be touting. a back-to-school break-in. the epic high school joy ride caught on camera. >> that's all coming up. but first you're never more than seven minutes away from my accuweather forecast. here is mike nicco. good morning. made it to friday. clearer conditions across the north bay. that's why it's a little cooler. we talked about how the warming trend will come at us from the south. sure enough, that's where we're seeing warmer temperatures this morning. everybody in the low to mid 60s. alum rock at 56. even a 60 showing up in san carlos, livermore, fairfield, 60. 58 in san francisco. it's clear, no sign of fog right

now. the drizzle, where it's been falling, places like the coast, higher elevations, it's been measurable. cool this morning, but warm this morning in mass transit. choppy afternoon on the bay once again. east bay valley start off in the 60s through 9:00. 70s at lunch but then look at these mid to upper 80s from 1:00 all the way through 7:00. for the peninsula we'll see faster sunshine. that will help us break out of the 60s and the cloud cover by 11:00. hang out in the upper 70s with mostly sunny conditions this afternoon. in the south bay, we'll have cloud cover through about 8:00. and temperatures will jump into the low to mid 80s with sunshine this afternoon. take a look at the newest numbers, the warm ones for the weekend coming up. first we want to bring frances in who has been busy with the commute. today we had so many accidents. a new one on the peninsula in palo alto south 101 at san antonio just reported.

erick is hitting the big island today. yesterday they were preparing. you can see them putting buckets of sand together to make more sandbags because flooding will be an issue. probably the biggest issue along with the dangerous surf from erick. let's take a look at what it's doing right now. it is weakening, 65-mile-per-hour winds. look what live doppler 7 is showing you. plenty of heavy showers hitting the big island. a flash flood watch extended until noon tomorrow. winds up to 39 miles per hour possible through sunday morning. there's the papgt. you can see it pulling away and weakening, still providing plenty of thunderstorms and dangerous surf in the form of rip currents for the rest of the islands. here is flossie. as one is pulling away, erick, flossie is pulling through. it will be very negligible

compared to erick. let's get back to reggie gape natale's defense team is asking the court for an early release saying he can stay with his grandfather in italy. investigators say 19-year-old finnegan elder seen here on the left confessed to using a knife to kill 35-year-old italian police officer last friday when undercover officers interrupted a drug deal. the i-team's dan noyes shared notes with a renowned italian investigative journalist. she says the officers handled the situation in an odd way. >> translator: what usually happens in a case of a ransom for something that has been stlen, the police arrive after the exchange happens. >> court documents say the fallen officer didn't have his gun and died after finn elder stabbed him 11 times.

elder's attorney says the boys acted in self-defense because they felt they were being mugged. dan has been tweeting during his time in italy. you see here the mob of people covering this from international media. follow him @dannoyes to get the lettest developments. in the north bay, the sonoma county sheriff's deputy shot a man they say tried to stab a security guard. >> it happened after 5:30 at the santa rosa plaza. the suspect ran from the mall. a deputy found him. the suspect got inside the patrol car. the deputy fired the weapon and hit the man three times. he was arrested and taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. a pilot and passenger are recovering from injuries they suffered when a small plane made a hard landing in novato. the plane landed just off the run weigh. the marin county sheriff says the pilot and passenger had mild
