>> so probably about an hour ago. we were sleeping and the dog woke us up crying. i, you know, took the dog outside and then you could totally smell just that heavy smell of smoke. and i kind of looked up and over the horizon you could just see the orange glow. >> wow. >> and so it is -- it is too close. >> yes. how -- is it your area, are there a lot of other houses that are kind of close to the fire? >> it is kind of sporadic farmland. we do have neighbors, and actually as i was outside with the dog and we were kind of looking up at the glow, our neighbor drove by rigt then on his truck and yesterday out the window, we got a fire pretty near. so my husband actually went with him to go check on the livestock, to make sure everything is okay.

the fire has reached the neighbor's cow pond. >> oh, gosh. we are looking at that picture that you sent in. i can understand why you feel like it is too close. i mean it seems pretty significant. are you staying indoors? i know you said your husband went out to check on some things, but what are you guys planning to do? >> yes. so to be honest, right now we're just waiting for directions from the authorities basically. i did receive an alert on the cell, saying that there is a shelter in place in clayton, and as of yet there is no evacuation. so we're just indoors, waiting. we have everything ready though if we need to evacuate and if we need to get the animals out, and those will be my only concerns. >> yes. so how long have you lived in the area? have you seen anything like this before? >> there's actually been a couple of fires in this area since we've lived here. we have been here for about -- it is going on four years. >> wow. so i'm glad that you are safe right now, you are packed up and ready to go of course. i know you are watching the fire. does it seem like it is getting

bigger since you have been watching it this morning? >> to be honest, i can't tell you if it is getting bigger or not. i do know the firefighter are working very hard. they're already there on the other side of it, and they do have the bulldozers going. >> gotcha. >> so they are working on it. >> gotcha. thank you so much for talking with husband, for sending us this picture. this is really incredible to see. we are glad you are okay and we'll check back in with you in case anything changes. just stay safe, nita. thank you so much for talking with us this morning. >> thank you. thank you very much. >> yes. so it is incredible to see that picture at least. we talk about the warm temperatures that some areas are having. this is always a concern. >> absolutely. yesterday we saw temperatures in the 90s in clayton, and today 93 for a high. right now it is a cool 60 degrees there. the relative humidity is at 85%, and the good news is the wind are light. they are out of the south, but in the vicinity anywhere from 5 to 10 miles per hour. so that smoke drifting to the

north and just a little bit to the north, just pretty much straight up though. but the temperatures will continue to climb quickly. in fact, in the next few hours we are going to drop to the -- climb to the 70s. but back home here closer to the coast, low clouds and fog not helping out in clayton because this is a shallow deck with the marine layer compressed. you can see from san jose, a lot of sunshine, clear there. 57 downtown. it is 61 in redwood city. here is sfo with some scattered clouds. numbers are already in the mid 60s by concord and clayton not far from concord. here is a look at our east bay where you can see a few clouds around, temperatures climbing into the 80s by noon time in our east bay valleys. staying comfortable at the coast, the hottest day out of the next seven, and we will talk more about the forecast. slightly cooler for the second half of the weekend. kumasi. >> thanks, lisa. it has been nearly a week since the gilroy garlic festival and this morning more stories of heroism emerging.

three were killed and more than a dozen others were hurt. the police chief said yet the gunman, 19-year-old santino legan, died from a self-inflicted gunshot which is a change from earlier accounts that officers fired the fatal shot. "abc 7 news" spoke with john perales, who was flagged down by multiple shooting victims. he drove those victims to the hospital. "abc 7 news" reporter luz pena has history. >> i went to make a u-turn here, and i did this and they were right there. right there by that sign. >> reporter: what did they tell you? >> well, i kept going a little bit like this. i rolled my window down and i said -- i don't even know what i said. but they said, "we've been shot, can you take us to a hospital." >> reporter: a thought that pushed john to keep driving, thoughts of blood stains in his car. that moment, victims calling out

for help, his teenage son in the hospital. his wife is a nurse manager at san luis regional hospital. >> we've just picked up three injured victims. at that point i didn't know what their injuries were, but i assumed the worst and started texting our emergency room director who i knew had left his home in morgan hill and headed in. >> reporter: for the next ten minutes, this father of three drove en route to the er. he didn't know their name, he just knew they needed help. several days after the shooting, john saw the two girls speaking at this press conference. gabrielle was shot in the shoulder and bryn in the back. >> i knew, i was like, yeah, i just remember being like, i'm hit, but i didn't look back, i didn't stop running. we didn't ever look back. >> reporter: john is thankful he made that u-turn, in the right place and at the right time. >> reporter: so do you consider yourself a hero? >> far from it. i think those folks that are going home to an empty house, empty beds, empty dreams, i think they're the true heroes

that are going to have to continue to live life without their loved ones. >> reporter: and our hearts go out to those families who lost their loved one. perales hopes to reunite with the victims he helped. he wants to do everything different. he want to introduce them to his family, laugh and break bread. luz pena, "abc 7 news." >> donations have been pouring in from around the country for the shooting victims. the relief fund has raised more than $500,000. the money can be used for funeral expenses, hospital bills, wages for lost income. the executive director of that fund says that within 24 hours of setting it up, hundreds of donations came in. >> people kept sharing on facebook, on instagram, and by the end of the day we had over $50,000. >> the amount given ranges from $5 to $2,500. if you would like to donate to the gilroy garlic festival victims relief fund we have a link on our website,

abc7news.com. the san jose earthquakes also will raise money for victims of the gilroy shooting. those who make a donation today will receive a small gift in exchange as a token of their appreciation. the team will hold a silent auction during today's match at avaya stadium. the team signed jerseys, tickets, and an on-field experience will be up for auction. the quakes will match the money raised and donate it to the relief fund. fremont's annual festival of the arts starts today with major security changes after the gilroy shooting. security cameras have been installed, steel barricades and a police watch tower are also going up. yesterday sky 7 flew over the setup, hpening along walnut avenue and pasayo padre parkway. organizers say there will be a heavy police presence with officers carrying stronger fire power than they normally. the director says he is confident the event will be safe. the san jose police officer association says it is cancelling an upcoming raffle which featured a semi automatic

rifle. proceeds would have been used to support the san jose police department's chaplaincy services, which is according to a poa magazine ad. the department's former police auditor called the raffle into question, especially in the wake of the gilroy garlic festival shooting. retired judge cordell spoke with us last night. >> the mission of the police department is to on protect and serve. you don't protect and serve by raffling off an assault weapon. >> the poa says it will not be raffling any type of guns or rifles in the future. in the east bay, thousands of bicyclists will kick off their morning at the annual pedal fest in oakland. there will be stunt shows, kids bike rodeo, safetyning, bike races, contests and, of course, good old live music. proceeds will benefit bike east bay, which is a nonprofit dedicated to providing safe and convenient biking. pedal fest runs from 11:00 until 6:00 tonight at jack london square. a lot going on this weekend but we are also thinking about the fire danger.

packed and ready to leave if they have to. happening now, all flight out of john way airport in santa ana are grounded after an electrical fire at a nearby substation. the substation has been deenergized and power to all three terminals is slow sli coming back online. all inbound flights were diverted after 7:30 last night and all planes are grounded until 7:00 this morning. three flights out of san jose were cancelled along with two out of oakland. a new california law changes the way youth football teams are allowed to practice in an attempt to reduce brain injuries. a former player for the new york giants who grew up here in the bay area came home to coach kids on new ways to play the sport. "abc 7 news" reporter liz kreutz met with him to show us the changing face of football. >> reporter: to an untrained eye these young athletes on a field in mill valley seem to be learning the basics of how to play football. but that's not exactly the case. >> paying attention to what they've been doing out there and it is similar to what, you know, but it is all new.

>> reporter: what's new about it comes from this guy, scott peters, a former nfl player who grew up in the bay area. he's traveling the country, teaching youth football players how to play safely. >> there's a lot of concerns around concussions, et cetera, so we have techniques that eliminate that idea. >> reporter: instead of hitting with your head, peters tells players to hit with their shoulders and hands. >> we don't move furniture in our house with our head. we shouldn't. we move big objects with our hand and shoulders and there's a specific method to do that. >> reporter: these new techniques are part of a growing trend to make football safer as a study showed that the sport could lead to a brain disease known as cte. governor newsom passed a law limiting the time allowed to spend on full contact to no more than 30-minute twice a week. >> that's the most significant standard in the country. >> reporter: joe rafter is one of the driving forces behind the new la. >> removing the win and ought cost to a safety and all cost mindset. >> my only concern is are they going to lose anything, you

"abc 7 news" reporter kate larson shows us a brand-new property in san francisco that includes permanent, supportive housing for homeless women and children. >> reporter: 4-year-old zaki and his baby brother have been living at catholic charities star community home in san francisco for nine months. 2-year-old jimena has been there for a year, and the ohanas brothers have been living at the richmond district homeless shelter more than two years.

now ten kids and their six moms are moving out of the women and children's shelter and into this nearly-finished hayes valley apartment complex. ♪ >> reporter: for the first time moms ashley austin and dina recalkian are getting a look at their new community supportive housing. >> thank you. >> reporter: dina and jimena are moving into this one bedroom. they became homeless after dina escaped domestic violence. >> translator: now i feel happy and safe because i have a place to be with my baby. >> reporter: the star community home moms secured their permanent supportive housing by working with counsellors at one of three access points in the city. the access point case workers examine the clients' individual circumstances to determine their eligibility for different housing programs and subsidies. here at 455 fell street there are 107 affordable units.

33 of the units are for homeless families, 72 of the units for low income households, and two of the units are designated for families with licensed in-home daycare facilities. >> i have been working on this development about five years and it is the first time i have met any of the tenants that will move in. it is emotional to hear her story. >> reporter: tim dunn works for mercy housing, the developer and owner/operator of 455 fell. mercy, a nonprofit, has about 40 affordable housing properties in san francisco with more on the way. at each property there are services to help residents like ashley and dina stay housed. >> formerly households are very stable in the building that we manage, so it is very likely they will be here for many years. this will be their home. >> this is our own place. it is forever. so, yeah, i can't wait to see their face when we finally move in. >> reporter: ashley was elated touring her new two bedroom. she grew up in san francisco and was living with her grandmother who she was also taking care of,

but when her grandmother passed away last year she and her sons were kicked out of the apartment. after all she has learned this year, she has a message to other families who are struggling. >> don't give up. you know, if you can put all of your selfishness as an individual aside and see what is more important to you, which is your kids and maintaining a roof, not a temporary roof but a permanent roof for your kids, don't give up. don't listen to nobody when they tell you, no, you can't or, no, you're not qualified for it or none of that. just keep going. >> reporter: ashley, dina and all of 455 fel fel fel homeless residents will pay rent in the amount of 30% of their income. they move in in august. in san francisco, i'm kate larson, "abc 7 news". also as part of our building a better bay area housing week, "abc 7 news" anchor dan ashley spoke with experts during a town hall and they're feeling the same pressures. >> i have a 31-year-old son who is actually a construction worker. he did the windows over at

vegetation fires are. so with the light winds, a bit of a gust to about 8 miles per hour, drifting a bit to the north, some of this smoke and the winds in and around this air at the most start about 15 to 17 miles per hour. as we look at the fog here, it is a shallow deck. so where we have it, it is dense. the cool marine air not reaching to our inland east bay. the coolest temperatures you will have are right now, in and around 60 degrees, because it is a quick warm-up. in fact, down the road it is warmer in oakland at 62. in the low 60s in san jose. we still have cool numbers along the shoreline, but today will be the warmest out of the next seven and the hottest temperatures will be inland, right around clayton and concord this afternoon. a lot like yesterday. unfortunately, the weather, although it is going to be hot, we will not be looking at the gusty offshore winds north or east, just a light south wind. 52, petaluma. 60 by the delta there. 57 in livermore. another check of the wind around the area or the 24-hour

temperature change sos shows w are two to six degrees warmer than yesterday. the relative humid will be coming down. the wind is relatively calm at the surface but by fairfield you see up to about 15 miles per hours out of the southwest. upper elevation winds -- well, some are out of the north here, and they're still relatively light. so we do have the temperatures that will be above average today. the marine layer disappearing. here is a look at sfo. the fog near the cost right now, some mist and drizzle. warm inland. the hottest day, today. we are looking at the cooler pattern coming into play for the middle of next week. we will get a stronger onshore push tomorrow, and so that will bring perhaps slightly cooler temperatures. looking at ia looking at east bay, concord is 94. looking admit 80s around the bay. low 80s on the peninsula. 69 in san francisco. mid 60s, half moon bay. as we look at san jose today, it is going to be hot for the fair today and tomorrow.

on your door? could you smell the smoke? >> one of our neighbors, one of our neighbors knocked on our door, woke us up, and i walked out. hold on, the sheriff is coming by. what's that? clayton palms. all right. thank you. thank you. okay. thank you. >> are they telling you that you can go back in, mark? >> yes, the sheriff's department just said we can go back in. yeah, i was woke up about 4:00 this morning by a knock on the door, and when i walked outside the whole park was completely enveloped in smoke. >> wow. what does it look like out there right now? >> i'm headed back towards -- there's still smoke hanging over the hills, but i'm heading back to the park now. i still got about a five-minute drive before i get back to marsh creek. >> i guess the concern is how close the fire got to your homes. are you concerned at all? >> if they're letting us back, i'm not concerned. in the last three years there

gusts to 15 miles per hour. but right over clayton the winds are lighter than that. the fog is confined to the shoreline. it is patchy across the bay over in oakland. here is a look from our east bay hills camera where you see in the distance some of the low cloud deck. 57, san francisco. in the 60s in redwood city and san jose. as we look at golden gate, this will clear partially today. it is 54 in santa rosa. 63 in concord. it will be a quick warm-up today. how quick? here is a look at 10:00 where we're in the upper 80s out by the delta. that includes concord and clayton. 74 for you in san ramon. as we get towards the later afternoon, look at the reds. it is the hottest day we are going to see in a while, that's today, with temperatures well into the 90s. 80s on parts of the peninsula. tonight the fog will be back. we will talk about the cooldown, how extensive it gets, how much fog we will see coming up. kumasi. >> thanks, lisa. two more people have died after a bluff gave way at a

beach north of san diego. one woman was killed at the scene. the two others later died at the hospital. the sand stone bluff collapsed just before 3:00 yesterday afternoon in encinitas, a popular spot for surfers and tourists. here is a look at side-by-sigh comparison of the cliff before and then after that collapse. now, bluffs give way several times a year because of the naturally eroding coastline. on the peninsula, hundreds of students will get a new backpack filled with school supplies to get ready for the school year. samaritan house in san mateo will give out the backpacks to low income students. over the course of the summer it is giving away more than 2,000 backpacks. families register their children ahead of time and local companies and organizations donated the bags and supplies. the event starts at 9:00 this morning. and in san francisco, thousands of kids will also be ready for the school year. the public defender's office is giving away backpacks in the western addition neighborhood. mayor london breed and police

good morning, everyone. we are following breaking news in contra costa county. cal fire says firefighters are at the scene of multiple vegetation fires in clayton. here is a picture from mark. we just spoke with him over the phone a few minutes ago, and you can see the flames from just across the street. cal fire is estimating 500 acres are burning on the north side of marsh creek road just west of brentwood. now, this is a picture -- >> we were sleeping and the dog woke us up crying. i, you know, took the dog outside and then you could totally smell just that heavy smell of smoke. >> uh-huh. >> and i kind of looked up, and

over the horizon you could just see the orange glow. so it is -- it is too close. it is kind of sporadic farmland, but we do have neighbors. and, actually, as i was outside with the dog and we were kind of looking at the glow, our neighbor drove by right then on his truck and kind of yesterday out the window, we got a fire pretty near. and so my husband actually went with him to go check on the livestock, make sure everything is okay. the fire has reached the neighbor's cow pond. right now we are just waiting for directions from the authorities basically. i did receive an alert on the cell, saying there's a shelter in place in clayton. as of yet there's no evacuation. so we're just indoors, waiting. we have everything ready though if we need to evacuate and if we need to get the animals out.

those will be my only concerns. there's actually been a couple of fires in this area since we lived here. we've been here for about going on four years. i do know the firefighters are working very hard. they're already there on the other side of it and they do have the bulldozers going. so they are -- they are working on it. >> and that was nita. i spoke with her earlier this morning, and she says that she's just kind of waiting to see. she's packed up and ready to go if she does, indeed, have to leave, but right now firefighters are asking people in clayton to stay inside, to close their windows and doors. we were also able to speak with mark, and he told us that he lives in the mobile home park on marsh creek road and he has been given the all clear to return to his home along with everyone in that community. they had to be evacuated, he said, around 4:30 this morning. we will give you the latest on that as soon as we get that, but firefighters working to control the fire in contra costa county. in the south bay lords,

have a great weekend, everybody. i'm larry beil. >> i don't know about that, larry. all right. so the time now is 6:50. lisa is here with a look at our forecast. good morning, lisa. >> good morning, kumasi. yes, we are looking at a quick warm-up today. already sunny here in san francisco. the clouds are con fienld fined shoreline and numbers three to ten degrees above average today. we started the warm-up yesterday. here is a look at walnut creek, nice and sunny. we will continue the warming today, although with the onshore flow we will keep it from getting too warm. that means no 100s, no upper 90s, but mid 90s are hot nor the inland valleys. we will see temperatures the warmest today, and looking at the patchy fog returning tonight, allowing for a little bit more of a stronger onshore push tomorrow, but cooler days are ahead for the week ahead. in fact, temperatures will be below average getting to the middle of next week.

that helps, of course, with the fire danger. today it is elevated. sutro tower camera, salesforce tower buried in the low cloud deck. here is live doppler 7, and the clouds are already scattered. as we look at clayton where the vegetation fires are, we are looking at 60 degrees, the south wind with a wind gust of 8 miles per hour. winds in and around that area about 15 miles per hour as that gusts by the delta. elsewhere light, out of the south. we go up to about 1,000 feet and they're offshore and a little gustier around mount tam. we will continue to see the winds pick up a little bit throughout the afternoon and we will see the low cloud deck disappear almost totally but not entirely at the shoreline. so partly cloudy, we will call it, from half moon bay to pacifical. 60 in redwood city. 61 in san jose. this is a view of san rafael, marin county, partly cloudy skies. right now a lot of sun and warn again for much of marin. 63 in concord and 67 in livermore. compared to yesterday at this time, we are up around two

degrees around concord, clayton, six degrees warmer in napa. you get the idea. it is going to be a warmer day today, about four degrees above average in san jose, 86. 85 for you in santa clara. sunnyvale, mid 80s. look for low 80s from redwood city to palo alto. as you get to the coast, cloud cover. 69 in the north bay, 88 for you. pretty warm for sonoma. 93 in calistoga. mild to warm from oakland, 77, but you get towards union city and you are warming up, through the 80s. fremont, 82. inland we have the low 90s from san ramon to walnut creek, but you head over towards pittsburg and antioch and it is hot, in the mid 90s. keep that in mind today. lots of water, don't stay in the sun. low cloud and fog pushing into the bay tonight, making it to about oakland. as we go through the next several days our air conditioner will be with us.

mother nature allowing for the low clouds and fog to get a little taller and deeper in the days ahead. today, 60s to 90s. tomorrow, a stronger sea breeze. monday, numbers begin to come down around the bay, and then you download our accuweather app and we will be cool with breezy winds right on through the rest of the week. so today, certainly warm out there. you see what that does. i mean it is 60 degrees in clayton but it doesn't matter, it is dry out there.
