people are answering the call from police to give blood. others are showing up to volunteer and do whatever's asked of them. >> in a situation like this, you just ask yourself, how can i help? >> i'm eric thomas, thanks for joining us. at least 20 people dead, 26 injured. three of the victims are from mexico according to that country's mexico. one suspect is under arrest. this is one of the worst mass shootings in u.s. history. joining us now is abc news reporter megan debreezian. she's been following this for us in new york. >> reporter: good afternoon, eric. abc news just learned the el paso police chief says authorities are examining what he called a manifesto they believe written by the shooter and shows a possible nexus to a hate crime. scene of horror at an el paso walmart.

>> all tack units make it to inside walmart, please. >> reporter: the first call coming in at 10:00 this morning at the mall in el paso. thousands of shoppers inside the walmart when the shooting began. >> he starts pop, pop, pop, pop. he's going. he's trigger finger. he's going, going, going. >> reporter: the alleged shooter identified as 21-year-old patrick crusius of allen, texas, killing at least 18 people. dozens take ton local hospitals, including two chirng one as young as 2 years old. the suspect carrying a rifle targeted his victims one by one, seemly at random. this person trying to get out as first responders rush in. panicked shoppers recording their escapes, posting on social media. >> run, mija, run. >> people were just trying to get out of there, trying to push people out of the way or trying to get them to go with them. >> reporter: the single suspect now in police custody. his motive still unclear. >> all i can say is it happened

without incident, so i can assume the person -- >> reporter: authorities are investigating a home in allen, texas, believed to be connected to the el paso shooting. mexico's president has confirmed three mexican nationals are among the dead in el paso. reporting from new york, abc 7 news. >> megan, thank you very much. we have been sending out alerts about the breaking news in el paso throughout the day with abc 7s mobile app. download it and be sure to enable the push alert feature. this morning's massacre in el paso comes less than a week after the mass shooting in gilr gilroy. people are still arriving at the scene of sunday's tragedy to retrieve their belongings. parts of the venue are still a crime scene. teams of federal, state, and local law enforcement officers are there.

people want to clean up. >> it's takes a lot the tear down the festival and get it to be a park again. >> reporter: the coroner said yesterday the gunman died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound. abc 7 news was at fremont for the festival of the arts. security was on the mind of the organizers as well as police. special precautions were taken this year, including the installation of security cameras, a watchtower, barriers to stop speeding cars and officers patrolling venue with higher fire power. organizers say the turnout has not been affected. developing news out of the east bay where firefighters are working to contain brush fires in clayton near marsh creek road and morgan territory road. all fires started overnight. lisa? >> reporter: eric, the marsh complex is now 75% contained.

take a look behind me and you can see crews are still on the scene cutting fire line. behind me is nearly 200 acres of scorched earth. it burned 565 acres. they were originally 12 small fires to merged into three larger fires. more than 400 firefighters fought these fires. right now, the cause is still under investigation, thoh some residents say they heard explosions. >> we have highly trained law enforcement investigators that will go through all the fires to determine their cause. right now it would be pure speculation. it is unusual to have a multiple amount of fires in an area like this, and that's why we are so focused on investigating it. >> reporter: and air quality advisory is in place right now. smokey air has been reported in antioch and pittsburgh.

for a short time, those living in the clayton palms community were forced to evacuate but they were allowed to return home a few hours later. back here live now. full containment is expected in the coming days. live near clayton, abc 7 news. >> lisa, thank you. the fast moving fire has forced several residents to pack up and leave after flames got cornell bernard has that story from clayton. >> reporter: firefighters battled brush fires from the air and from the ground saturday for a time, a dozen separate fires burning throughout clayton and into brentwood. >> there's multiple fire on morgan territory road, marsh creek road. >> reporter: one of fires moving toward homes. a rude awakening for people living here in the clayton palms community. hundreds of them told to evacuate this morning after the fire got that close. >> as soon as i went outside,

opened my door, i could see the flames behind my house. i grabbed the kids and put them in my car seat. >> i grabbed birth certificates, my wedding rings. >> i hear somebody say, fire. you need to evacuate. >> reporter: neighbors heard first responders going door to door waking people at 4:00 a.m. hours later the danger had passed. firefighters stopped the wildfire from burning any homes. >> i'm amazed at their response. >> reporter: for that, neighbors are forever grateful. >> none of us were prepared for this, and so thank you from the bottom of our hearts. you saved us. >> reporter: it's not the first time these folks have come face-to-face with wildfires. they have been evacuated before, but they hope this will be the last time. >> thank you! >> reporter: in clayton, cornell bernard, abc 7 news. >> those fires burning near clayton burning in one of the hottest spots in the bay area today. the latest on conditions.

an update now on our breaking news. police say 20 people were killed this afternoon at a mall in el paso. 26 others injured. the wounded ranging in age from 2 to 82. police say they have a 22-year-old man in custody and they're reviewing a manifesto linked to the shooter who opened fire apparently with a rifle. we'll have updates on abc news 7.com and the app. in san diego county, geologyists say a cliff that collapsed yesterday and killed three people is unstable and could deteriorate more. officials re-opened parts of the beach north and south of the slide zone but advised visitors of the risk. >> it's a block failure in geo tech terms and it also slabbed off.

slab block failure. when it fell down on the beach it rolls towards the west, towards the water. >> a life guard has been posted near the slide area to keep watch on the unstable cliff side. the los angeles times reports a uc student suspended for two years after stalking and sexual harassment filed a lawsuit. it seeks class status and claims the lawsuit was unfair and did not provide students due process. a cal state-fullerton student filed a similar lawsuit last month. they believe their processes are fair. a sacramento area community is celebrating one of the oldest living veterans in the country who serve in the three wars. retired army sergeant nathan allen jr. turned 100 on august 12th. he serve in the world war ii and korea and vietnam. >> i was a firefighter in the
