we have team coverage this morning starting with abc 7 news reporter megan tevrizian. >> reporter: yes reggie and kumasi. this morning we're learning more about the victims. they include a grandmother who raised seven children. a father and mother who were killed while protecting their 2-month-old son and an army veteran who was a long-time bus driver here in el paso. ♪ >> reporter: today two cities in mourning. overnight hundreds in el paso gathering in prayer. in dayton, a community coming together to honor the victims. >> go, go, go. >> reporter: the horror starting saturday morning in el paso. officials say 21-year-old patrick crusius opened fire at a packed walmart killing 20 people and injuring more than two dozen others in the deadliest mass shooting of this year. jda and andre anchondo. >> i think the father tried to

shield him, tried to shield her and she shielded him. there's no way he would have let anything happen to that child. i know he was right there as well. >> reporter: this cell phone video shows the moments after crusius was taken into custody. he's charged with murder. federal authorities say more charges could be coming including hate crimes and domestic terrorism. only 13 hours after el paso, another massacre, this one in dayton, ohio when 24-year-old connor betts is accused of opening fire in the downtown district killing nine people including his sister and injuring 27 others. surveillance video shows people running for their lives and police engaging the suspect. authorities say the gunman was shot down in 30 seconds. the president weighing in on the back-to-back tragedies. >> these are two incredible places. we love the people. >> reporter: the grandparents of

the el paso shooter speaking through a neighbor saying they are devastated and they're praying for the victims. until very recently that shooter was living at his grandparents' home but moved out six weeks ago. megan tevrizian, abc 7 news. in dayton, information about the shooting victims is emerging slowly this morning. hundreds of people remembered them at a vigil in the community. this was last night. they were horrified by what they saw. others were relieved to know a loved one was safe. >> how was she not here last night? she was supposed to come. i truly believe -- i found three dimes this morning, and i just feel like they were watching over her. >> this woman discovered her daughter was not in the line of fire when 911 calls started coming in just after 1:00 yesterday. president trump ordered flags to fly at half staff at the white house and all federal

government buildings through thursday. the search for a motive in one of this weekend's shootings may involve a bay area company. the suspected gunman of the el paso shooting may have been inspired by a website known as 8 clete chan. >> now a website security company in san francisco cutting thais with 8 clete chan. abc 7 news reporter anser hassan is live outside cloudflare's headquarters with more. >> reporter: good morning, guys. cloudflare offers millions of website and cyber security protections against hackers. at midnight the cyber security company cut access to 8chan. chief executive matthew prince says the el paso shooter appears to have been inspired by discussions on 8chan where white supremacists have glorified previous massacres. prince writes that 8chan has repeatedly proven itself to be, quote, a cesspool of hate. prince says even if 8chan may not have violated the letter of

the law in refusing to moderate their hate-filled community, they've created an environment that revels in violating its spirit. cloudflare has been condemned in the past for providing technical support to online hate groups citing free speech. in this case they say the rationale is simple. 8han has proven to be lawless and it's resulted in death. they add they'll be working with governments around the world on tougher rules to regulate online content. live anser hassan, abc 7 news. people impacted by the deadly gilroy garlic shooting are ae acting to the two mass shootings from this weekend. a birthday party was held in san jose for keyla salazar. she would have turned 14 years old on sunday. the 25-year-old man from new york and a 6-year-old boy from san jose were also killed. those affected are calling the

is trying to get the rv up and on its side. if you zoom into the map, you can see specifically where it is there, and that purple line shows that all the lanes are closed. i want to take you to another crash. this is tracy going into dublin. look at the speeds. 11 miles per hour in some points, 19 miles per hour at the point of the crash. this is westbound 580 through florgt flynn. i know it's monday. bear with the traffic. we're going to make it today. we're learning more about two back-to-back mass shootings that shocked the nation this weekend. >> we'll start in el paso. on saturday 20 people were killed, another 26 hurt. many of the dead and injured are mexican nationals. a suspect was taken into custody alive. the justice department says they are treating this attack as an act of domestic terrorism. early sunday morning in dayton, ohio, a gunman killed nine

people, 27 more were hurt. officers killed that shooter. this morning we're also learning more about both the el paso and dayton gunman. the grandparents released a statement read by a neighbor. >> we are devastated by the events of el paso and pray for the victims of this tragedy. patrick crusius is our grandson. he lived with us in our house in allen, texas, while he attended junior college. >> in dayton, former classmates of shooter connor betts are coming forward. police say there was nothing in his background to prevent him from buying the gun used in the attack. two former classmates said he was suspended after a hit list was found at school. early this morning, we heard from the president. he tweeted this out. we cannot let those killed in el paso and dayton die in vain. he went on to say republicans and democrats should come together to strengthen background checks, although it wasn't specific. he even suggested marrying that

legislation with what he says is desperately needed immigration reform. there are questions whether the president's own words about mexican immigrants actually inspire the shooter. the el paso shooter said, quote, this attack is a response to the hispanic invasion of texas. that mary roars language the president himself used a few months prior. the guy says he felt this way a long time before donald trump got elected president. no politician is to blame for that. >> we need to close these loopholes once and for all. >> senate minority leader chuck schumer is calling on the senate to vote on a bill that would strengthen background checks. the nra is reacting to the two masked shootings saying, quote, the nra is committed to safe and lawful use of firearms by those exercising their second amendment freedoms. we work in good faith to pursue real solutions.

president trump plans to speak about the shootings at 7:00 this morning. abc news will carry the president's remarks in a special report. if you're headed out the door around that time, we'll stream the presidential remarks on abc7news.com and on the abc 7 news app. there's a petition on move on.org collecting signatures for what it calls common sense gun control. the petition will be delivered to president trump and congress. so far about 290,000 people signed it. as mat shootings become more common, a psychiatrist talked about what parents can do on "good morning america." >> first of all, limit screen time. ask open-ended questions like, tell me what you know about the shootings, and lastly. think about our role as parents where we're feeling vulnerable ourselves, but it's our duty to create a safe container for our children. by helping them re-establish their safety, we also can re-establish our own. >> she says it's especially

program begins to force you to pay with a clipper card. abc 7 news reporter amy hollyfield is live in oak land. amy. were we just learned a little secret. this changeover is coming after the morning commute. so if you're feeling a little sleepy and slow this morning, you're going to get a little bit of a break. but later today, starting later today here at the 19th street station in oakland, they are going to insist that you buy a clipper card instead of a paper ticket. b.a.r.t. wants to eventually switch to only clipper cards because it's the cardiac accepted regionally at different public transportation agencies. b.a.r.t. says it is time for travelers to switch over. we asked how it's going today. it sounds like they're going to ease people in today. >> you can still, and i saw a gentleman this morning, he was buying a pipper ticket. it might have been one of the last ones. as of this evening, we expect all the machines here will be switched over.
