i'm lisa amin gulezian in berkeley. this is an event more important than ever, because of mass shootings. apartment hunting in the bay area on a budget. >> what you can find for $1,500 a month. i'm amanda del castillo in san mateo. how business is thriving after 35 years. "abc7 news" starts right now. now, news to build a better bay area, from abc 7. communities across the bay area joined forces with the police tonight, for national night out. >> tonight, the events took on special significance in light of the violence in gilroy, dayton, ohio, and el paso, texas. >> lisa amin gulezian joins us live from san pablo park in berkeley. lisa?

>> reporter: a national night out event took place here tonight. dozens came out to simply be together. ♪ it's all right to have a good time ♪ >> reporter: harmony filled san pablo park on this national night out. ♪ >> reporter: it was a chance for strangers to meet, share stories and leave as friends. >> it's an opportunity to engage with the community, an opportunity for families to engage with other city staff. and for neighbors to get to know one another. >> reporter: it was also an et artunity forany scs th uni, youhappen, know, here or there. and we just have to stay together and unite as one. >> it takes a village, it really does. that's the only way things will change is everybody becomes part

of the solution. >> reporter: and so people are getting out of their homes and taking to the street s where they're talking and creating a much needed sense of community. while police are participating, they're keeping a close eye on things. in light of the recent events, they have to. >> we have a large amount of officers out to make sure that we have a safe and, you know, environment for families in our community. >> reporter: and the event ended once the sun went down. no reports of any problems. lisa amin gulezian, "abc7 news." >> lisa, thanks. this is a look at some of the other national night out events from around the bay area tonight. a lot of communities came together to meet and get to know one another. richmond police even had a mechanical bull. new details on the gilroy shooting.ayhebi

omestic terrorism investigation into the shooting. agents say the gunman had a number of targets, including courthouses and political groups affiliate with the both parties. legan's family apologized and said it was impossible to reconcile this with the son we thought we knew. a funeral was held today for one of the three killed in gilroy. mourners packed a church for 13-year-old kayla salazar. the service took place two days after she would have turned 14. an act of heroism amidst the kay yols of the gilroy shooting. chris reyes has this reunion. >> glad to see you. this is my mom, sherry. she wanted to say hi. >> reporter: the last time nick

mcfarland and kim thomas saw each other was here. when kim saw nick after he had been shot, she knew she had to help. >> i didn't think about how it wasn't safe, i just did what i felt i needed to do to get him safe. >> you were my angel that day. i don't know why, but you were. i guess you can be a complete stranger, but you can save people's lives. >> reporter: you can see the marriage shift tourniquet she used. then she got on the phone with 911. >> is she awake? >> he's awake. i'm a nurse. he got grazed in the right hip and leg. >> they're on the way, okay? just stay calm. >> reporter: this reunion is a happy one, but sit a meeting of

survivors. traumatized by a horrific event. >> i had days where i just cried, just knowing he was okay, it just brought closure to knowing what i did do to help him in some way. >> for me just knowing that i was going to see pretty much my hero, my angel for that day, was just putting the biggest smile on my face. i couldn't wait for this day. we'll be family friends for the rest of our lives. i just want to say thank you again, and god bless you, honestly. you were my angel that day. another story you'll see only on "abc7 news," a 12-year-old survivor of the gilroy story is sharing her story. they started running when the and leslie noticed something. >> i was like, what was that? and i touched myself, and there was blood on my hand. so i told my cousin i got shot.

>> reporter: she was hit in the leg and said it hurts to walk. she did receive a visit from governor newsom. the gilroy foundation has established a special fund for the victims of the shooting. we have a link on our website how to donate, as well as links to help victims in el paso, as well as dayton. two countries issued travel warnings about the united states following the mass shootings. venezuela advised those heading to the u.s. to postpone their visit. uruguay issued a similar warning. we're committed to building a better bay area here at abc 7. that means focusing on issues most important to you like rent and housing. >> the rest of the country pays on average $1,500 a month. so what can that get you here in the bay area? >> that's a good question.

as jobina fortson explores, she has the option for us. >> reporter: the media national rent is $1,500 a month. i know. in oakland, san jose, and san francisco, is more than double what the rest of the country is paying. but what can you get in the bay area for about the same price as the rest of the country? well, let's find out. first up, a building in the mission, run by star city. how many people live in this building? >> there are a total of 20 rooms and every room is up for rent. >> reporter: 19 roommates is a way to make friends. >> nice open kitchen. nice appliances. >> reporter: all you need is a suitcase and show up. >> you move in, everything in the room is furnished. you plug into a community. most of the members are younger professionals. b ages 40s, 50s. floor number one has ten units,

and we have two full baths. and one half bath. and they are cleaned monday through friday. >> reporter: and here's the room. >> good sized. not bad for san francisco. >> reporter: yeah. rent is $2,075 a month, not quite under $1,500. stop two, an efficiency studio in the tenderloin. what makes this an efficiency studio? >> it doesn't have a full kitchen. >> reporter: our realtor's recommendation is get a microwave or eat out. you a bathroom, a closet. and how much is this? >> $1495. >> is that a good deal? >> it's very competitive. there's not many studios in this price range. >> reporter: oh, we know.om in by a company called bungalow. >> right next to b.a.r.t., a great location. >> reporter: almost every room

can fit a king-sized bed. >> four roommates could live together comfortably. >> reporter: the house comes furnished and here's a bathroom. >> it's really nice. a lot of our homes are remodeled. >> reporter: the moment of truth. how much is the rent? >> yeah, so every bedroom pays on average about $1400 to $1450 for the rent. >> reporter: oh. now to the south bay. welcome to our final stop here in san jose. come on in here. we have the microwave, a mini fridge, television that is included. there is a sink back here, but no kitchen. however, there is a bathroom. you're in luck. this place is going for $1,500 a month. it's being rented out to two cats. yep, their owner didn't have a place for them to go, so the pets live here. jobina fortson, "abc7 news."
