will create thunderstorms that will be for the most part dry, meaning not a lot of rain but you can get lightning that starts storms and out-flow boundaries that cause more erratic winds. gusts up to 60 miles an hour of those squeezing together with that ridge in the southeast that's bringing heat, and we're talking up to 108 feels like in houston this afternoon. 106 jacksonville. this is prolonged for a couple of days going into the weekend. get rest and get cool. >> good advice. >> warm weekend coming up. thank you, ginger. now to that chaos at a missouri walmart. a man in military-style clothing carrying tactical weapons walking into a store sending customers fleeing and gio benitez is here with more. thankfully there was an off-duty firefighter on the scene. >> yeah, michael, thank goodness. good morning. he happened to be there. he was armed and was able to hold the suspect at gunpoint until police arrived. this with the nation on high alert as the fbi warns of possible copycats. >> reporter: this morning, another american town on edge. watch as a young man donning body armor, military fatigues and carrying an assault rifle approaches missouri police with his hands in the air eventually

dropping to his knees surrendering. >> he certainly had the capability and potential to harm people. >> reporter: police quickly detaining him. he was carrying more than 100 rounds of ammunition. police say that at 4:10 thursday afternoon, the man appearing to be in his 20s entered a walmart donning that tactical gear, and authorities arrived three minutes later after the first call. >> male wearing a bulletproof vest and an ar around his neck has just walked into the store and is recording himself. >> all we know is that he walked in heavily armed with body armor on in military fatigues and caused a great amount of panic inside. >> reporter: julie had just pulled into the walmart parking lot when she spotted the suspect. >> i was about to get out of my car and a voice to my left said is that a real rifle? is that a real rifle? so i looked up and i saw the person to my left holding a gun. >> go, go. >> reporter: the recent threat

coming just days after a weekend of deadly shootings. one occurring at a walmart in el paso, texas that left 22 people dead. thankfully no one in springfield was injured. the walmart manager pulling a fire alarm, urging shoppers and customers to flee. we don't know of any motive but just this week the fbi held a call with law enforcement agencies across the country and said that they were, quote, concerned that u.s.-based domestic violent extremists could be inspired by this weekend's attack. >> a country on edge right now. okay, gio. thanks. we turn to washington and a sign that republican lawmakers might, might be willing to take up the fight over background checks. senate majority leader mitch mcconnell now says he would at least consider the idea but not until after congress comes back from its summer vacation. kyra phillips is at the white house with the latest and the president says he's for background checks now but the big question is whether he'll stick to the support this time. >> reporter: right. you emphasized the word "might." the president has waffled on this before, cecilia, but now

he's coming out strong saying he wants to keep guns out of the hands of, quote, sick people, so now he is considering tightening those loopholes and background checks. will he do something as this debate remains incredibly divisive? here's the good news this morning. there are new signs lawmakers may be willing to meet in the middle. this morning, new signs that republican leadership may be reconsidering long-held stances on gun control. senate majority leader mitch mcconnell signaling he's open to reviewing new measures. >> background checks and red flags will probably lead the discussion. those are two items that for sure will be front and center. >> reporter: after failing to move on two bills expanding background checks passed by the house in february, mcconnell still refusing to call lawmakers back early. but now saying new legislation on gun control will be a top priority when congress reconvenes next month. the president seemingly throwing

his support behind stricter regulations. >> i'm looking to do background checks.groundar importan people or people with rage or hate, sick people. i don't want -- i'm all in favor of it. >> reporter: but not everyone is on board. earlier, the nra warning the president that expanding background checks would not be popular with his base, although some democrats worry the president could change course again. house speaker nancy pelosi and chuck schumer issuing a joint statement yesterday saying, the president gave us his assurances that he would review the bipartisan house-passed legislation and understood our interest in moving as quickly as possible to help save lives. and, george, as you know, senators on both sides of the aisle have been skeptical that mcconnell will willingly bring gun control measures to the r unlent

continues to push for it. president trump really does hold the power here, george. >> he does. okay, kyra. thanks very much. the fallout from these these mass shootings is the topic on the campaign trail as the candidates descend on iowa for the annual state fair. abc's mary bruce is in des moines, and mary, they're taking on president trump calling him a white supremacist. >> reporter: we are hearing some of the harshest rebukes yet of this president during the campaign amongst the corn dogs and ice cream cones here at the fair, a very real conversation about the impacts of the president's rhetoric and what these democratic candidates plan to do to stop all of this violence. overnight, former vice president joe biden promising change to iowa voters. >> what will you do to stop the sale of guns to unfit individuals and to protect high schoolers like me from this school shooting epidemic? >> it's going to change. you're the best educated. the most open, the most inclusive generation in american history, and you have decided no more.

i promise you -- i promise you it's going to change. >> reporter: at the fair biden greeting his supporters taking selfies and using his harshest language yet to take on trump. >> do you believe that the president is a white supremacist? >> i believe everything the president says and does encourages white supremacists and i'm not sure there's much of a distinction. as a matter of fact, it may be even worse. >> reporter: as some are flatout labelling the president a white supremacist. >> is the president a white supremacist? >> he is. he has made that very clear. >> reporter: elizabeth warren reportedly telling "the new york times" without hesitation that she too believes the president is a white supremacist. >> he can't have it both ways. he can't keep trying to stir this up, give aid and comfort, be embraced by the white supremacists and then say, oh, but not me. no. he's responsible. >> and, mary, we see this charge. kind of extraordinary, half a

dozen candidates calling the sitting president of the united states a white supremacist. how is the trump campaign responding? >> reporter: well george, the president insists that his rhetoric is not to blame and says he's actually bringing people together. now the president this morning the president is reportedly feeling smug and the campaign says his critics were accusing the president of fanning the flames of white nationalism. they say they are lobbing political attacks, george. >> mary, thanks. president trump named a new acting director of national intelligence to replace dan coats who is stepping down. joseph maguire, a retired navy admiral, is currently the director of the national counterterrorism center. last week the president dropped his plan to nominate congressman john ratcliffe for the job over concerns about his qualifications and questions about whether he exaggerated his experience as a federal prosecutor. president trump tweeted he has no doubt that maguire will do a great job. now to the battle at the border and new developments in those sweeping raids in mississippi. the trump administration is

defending those videos that show crying children left behind after their parents were swept up in the largest single state raid in history. abc's will carr spoke exclusively with the acting homeland security chief and joins us now from the border in arizona. will, some of those picked up in the raids have been released but not all of those kids have been reunited? >> reporter: that's right, cecilia. i asked the acting secretary about that specifically and he says it's a top priority to reunite those families and comes as he says there's still a crisis here at the border. after those raids, we're seeing some heartbreaking moments. >> my dad didn't do nothing. he's not a criminal. >> reporter: overnight some parents released after i.c.e. raids captured more than 600 migrants in mississippi, separating families on the first day of school. >> what would you say to that little girl? >> obviously the impact of the unfortunate law can be devastating for families, so what i would say is i.c.e. is going to go through a case-by-case process if she needs that parent for care tonight.

>> reporter: in an exclusive interview, acting homeland security secretary kevin mcaleenan says at least 40% of those arrested have been reunited with their families. >> it is a really challenging situation. we've got very vulnerable laws that invite families and kids to make this dangerous journey right now. >> reporter: as families cross the border, many detention centers have been overwhelmed. over the summer, the inspector general released a scathing report calling one facility a ticking time bomb. since, the numbers in detention have dropped significantly. that's in part thanks to new facilities. for the first time abc news got unprecedented access inside, observing clean showers, food and medical treatments. this as mcaleenan says he is focused on solving problems at the border, not the political rhetoric coming out of washington. >> president trump said immigrants are invading the united states. it's a sentiment we heard in the el paso shooter's manifesto as well. would you say that it's accurate that immigrants are invading the

country? >> that's not a term that we would use at cbp. we have seen a flow that is beyond anything in the last decade. >> reporter: i also asked the acting secretary about decriminalizing border crossings. he said that would not be helpful and would only invite more people to cross during a humanitarian crisis, michael. >> thanks so much for that, will. now to the urgent manhunt for an escaped convict in tennessee considered extremely dangerous. he's now suspected of killing a top prison official after making an escape on a tractor. victor oquendo has the very latest. t the. >> reporter: this morning the entire state of tennessee on alert for this inmate who escaped from a memphis prison on wednesday and is still on the run. >> we don't know where he is and he could be anywhere. >> reporter: curtis ray watson seen here the day of his escape, charged with battery, burglary and first degree murder after allegedly killing 64-year-old

debra johnson before disappearing without a trace. her grieving family speaking to abc affiliate wkrn. >> i'm angry. she didn't deserve what happened to her. she would have done anything for anybody at any moment. >> reporter: neighbors like julie jones who lives minutes from the penitentiary telling us she hasn't left her home. >> what's it like knowing an inmate escaped? knowing it's so close. >> terrified. terrified right now. >> reporter: the massive manhunt under way and police taking to the skies. searching every house and every car coming in and out of this remote community. authorities say he qualified for minimum security and escaped riding a tractor he had access to for work detail. that tractor recovered two miles away. these photos showing his tattoos, clothes he was wearing, and several mug shots, clean shaven and with a beard. >> if you sight this individual, do not approach him. he is extremely dangerous. >> reporter: there are

police check points just like this one all over the area outside the prison checking every single car that comes out. the tennessee bureau of investigation says they have received more than 75 tips, but we're going to turn now to a sea rescue off the bahamas where a small plane went down, but the three americans on board survived thanks to fishermen on a passing boat. we're hearing from those good samaritans this morning. >> we came across a life raft with three guys in the boat. pulled up, assessed the situation. they were a little banged up. >> we were in shock and could not believe they walked away and we had found them in the middle of the ocean. >> good work right there. >> yeah. >> scary situation. glad they're okay. and now to the field of dreams becoming a reality. the mlb just announced a big game will go down on the iconic field from the kevin costner movie. t.j. is here with all the details. >> stra, take me out to the corn field.

northern california and dangerous heat and heavy winds are fueling those flames. health headline getting a lot of attention, coffee and migraines and whether three or more cups could raise your risk of a migraine. dr. ashton will be here with a reality check on that. and take a look at this from maine. how many ducks do you see there crossing the road? 40 of them. they wanted to get to the other side and look how patient the drivers are right there. >> someone counted all those. we turn to that really really concerning sight in the air. a sole flight attendant on a plane going from chicago to south bend, indiana, apparently intoxicated, and david kerley has the story. good morning, david. >> reporter: good morning, cecilia. that flight attendant out of a job this morning, facing charges as well as passengers telling us that they were worried about their safety. concerned passengers this morning telling us they were frightened for their safety after spotting this flight attendant apparently intoxicated. >> what i saw on the flight that day was a very concerning and confusing scene.

>> she was stumbling and kind of staggering back and forth, bumping into passengers. >> reporter: on this short united express flight from chicago, passengers say that sole flight attendant appeared impaired, even before takeoff. >> it was clear that she was inebriated in some capacity, had no coordination, no balance. she was incomprehensible over the microphone. >> reporter: and once in the air it appeared that julianne march passed out. the passengers even fastening her seat belt for her. >> one of the other passengers did get up at a certain point and help her sit dune in her jump seat and buckled her in as if she was a helpless child. >> the fact that we didn't have an operational flight attendant on the flight meant all of our safety and security was compromised. >> reporter: charging documents say the 49-year-old wisconsin woman, upon landing in south bend with officers boarded, needed to steady herself with the airplane seats when she stood. the officers noticed bloodshot eyes, slurred speech and an odor of alcohol. when she finally took a breathalyzer test, her level was .2, five times over the legal limit for flight attendants.

>> it's unacceptable for anyone to have a distraction when they're performing safety sensitive work or to be impaired in performing that safety sensitive work. >> reporter: it was last week a plane arrested of being intoxicated, and over the weekend, the captain of a second flight arrested in scotland. now, there is a program that both the flight attendants and the pilots use to self-report. the flight attendants union tells us it's a rare occurrence and that program helps about 150 flight attendants every year with questions or if they have a problem. cecilia? >> frightening video there, david, thank you. george? we turn to members of the kennedy family who are taking on talk of the family curse after the death of the 22-year-old saoirse kennedy. whit johnson here with the story, and whit, they say the family is painfully typical. >> reporter: that's right, george. good morning to you. the kennedys have a big family that lives in the public eye but they want people to know that

they struggle through loss just like everyone else, and putting a spotlight on mental health following saoirse kennedy hill following her tragic death. just days after laying her to rest her family delivering a new message about mental health. former congressman patrick kennedy, saoirse's cousin, sharing an op-ed saying, saoirse wanted everyone to know that the kennedy family is not cursed. it's just big with an unsurprising incidence of mental illness and addiction. the late senator ted kennedy challenging the so-called kennedy curse, referring to the family's past tragedies including the assassination of jfk and saoirse's grandfather robert f. kennedy, writing, that offends me, and it would have offended saoirse. our illnesses are no different than anyone else's the . the 22-year-old was found last

tuesday, a possible overdose, sources say. her uncle posting a eulogy on medium detailing her last night saying, she finished a 25-page paper for boston college. she announced she would spend the remainder of the evening in an all-night celebration. she had dinner with her grandma, went to bed looking forward to her trip to los angeles. saoirse woke up with god. when she was just a teenager, she described her depression in a school newspaper. i suffered bouts of deep sadness that felt like a heavy boulder on my chest, and i attempted to take my own life. the kennedy family now celebrating her courage, remembering her sense of humor and love of philanthropy. she put out a bright light, her uncle writes. everybody loved her. she made people feel good. rfk jr. also writes that she watched the sunrise from the beach and had dinner plans with friends on the day she died. authorities are still awaiting toxicology results to determine the exact cause of her death. >> such a sad one. >> thanks very much.

now to the close encounter between fishermen and a killer whale. it's one of the coolest videos you will see. it was all caught on camera. the orca surfacing right next to their boat in the waters off san diego and diane macedo joins us now with the story. good morning, diane. >> reporter: good morning to you all. this group was searching for yellow tail, fish that can be about three feet long. what they saw instead was the size of a school bus and then it swam right up to their boat. watch as divers on a spear fishing trip get a very big surprise. >> whoo! >> reporter: their amazing encounter with this playful orca took place off the coast of san diego. >> there he is. whoo! >> reporter: you can even see the killer whale showing off performing a belly roll right beneath the surface. >> oh, it was incredible. i had ner been that close to a creature just huge, way bigger than me. i mean, i could have reached out and touched it. >> reporter: nathan says he and four friends were hunting for yellow tail when they spotted a a group of orcas a half a mile

away. >> out of nowhere one popped up right next to the boat, three or four feet away from me, landed, splashed me and the whole side of the boat. i screamed. >> reporter: he said the seemingly social orca followed closeby for ten minutes before swimming away. this rare encounter comes a week after another close call in san diego county. that camera-ready orca even posed with the captain for a selfie. experts say despite their name, killer whales are surprisingly boat friendly. >> they are actually very curious and playful animals. certain pods will often come up to a boat and play with the boat wake or bow ride, when they are riding in front of the boat. >> reporter: after all that, nathan and his friends still managed to catch some yellow tail. this kind of orca normally swims further south. sightings like these are very rare, and yellow tail is actually a very hard fish to catch. a big win for the group all around, and i'm guessing a great dinner as well. >> cool.

dr. ashton is here to break this down for us. let's start with migraines. a lot of people drink coffee when they have headaches thinking that they help. >> correct. >> this study saying it might trig they remember though. >> both of these studies, heavy, heavy on the association right now, not causation, not cause and effect but very thought provoking. start with the caffeine, it's not just coffee. the study done in boston looked at just under 100 adult migraine sufferers, followed them for six weeks, tracked their caffeine consumption so coffee, tea, soda, energy drinks. those people who had three or more servings of caffeinated beverages a day, went on to have a higher risk of having a migraine headache that day or the day after, so kind of an interesting finding. sometimes we think the opposite. >> we've talked a lot at this show about the benefits of drinking caffeine coffee. does this tell you cut it down

to two cups? >> not yet. it's not ready for prime time in terms of its recommendations for migraine sufferers. you know i've spoken many, many times. overall, the data supports health benefits to caffeine. we know it can potentially reduce the risk of certain types of cancer. it can boost brain function, of course, on the negative side it has the potential for increasing blood pressure and heart rate and this study points out that for some people with migraines, it may actually trigger a migraine, not help it, but to be clear. medically we often recommend caffeine when someone is having a migraine because it constricts afctn, so is the advice bra different for them? >> it may be another subtle message behind the study. it's not one size fits all. about one in five suffer from them. more common it women. i tell patients first, try to figure out what triggers yours and then in terms

of management do everything you can to prevent it but reduce the severity and frequency of that migrai migraine, and for a lot of people, it's dietary triggers. >> the other big headline. you brought plates to kind of give us a demonstration. this is about limiting red meat and its relation to breast cancer. >> exactly. much larger study and looked at over 40,000 women with a very strong history of breast cancer and they looked at meat consumption, read meat versus poultry. they found that if the women who ate the most red meat, they had a 23% greater risk of developing breast cancer. those who ate poultry, 15% lower risk. we need more data in terms of cause and effect. if it's in your power to modify, you might want to go for the poultry versus the red meat in moderation. >> you have a background in nutrition so thank you. >> i'm going to have my fourth cup of coffee. >> just don't cut the red wine.

time. he and his family -- all of whom are deaf, when they go out, they get strange looks from waiters, and a look of panic on the waiters' faces to have to deal with this. there is new technology like cell phones and they can text their orders and communicate easier now. >> what else tonight? >> a baby-sitter at a restaurant who is being berated. he's african-american and taking care of two white children. this is ripped right from the headlines because this actually happened. someone is calling the police on him because they are suspicious that this black man is taking care of two children. what would you do then? and we're also doing another scenario where a woman is to impoverished that she's at a restaurant and she can't afford a meal for her entire family, so she's splitting her meal with all the kids, one meal, and she's having nothing for herself. what would you do if you witnessed this, and you know, it just restores your faith in

good morning. an update to the three alarm fire in oakland. here's a look from sky 7. a large fire is burning at an artist's warehouse called moxi at east 11th and 25th avenue. ten businesses have burned. there are no reports of any injuries. the fire is visible along interstate 880. we have a look at how that's impacting traffic. >> it's causing big delays especially on northbound 880 as you drive through the area. it's visible from the traffic is jammed? both directions. in the northbound direction it's adding 20 minutes to your commute. 580 is an alternate but it's slow as well with an accident at 106th avenue. that delay is only 10 minutes. still a better
