news to build a better bay area. this is "abc7 mornings." good morning. it is saturday, august 10th. i'm kumasi aaron. let's start with a quick look at our letter. here is our meteorologist, francis. >> good morning. it is starting off muggy and with live doppler 7 and the satellite image, we have a lot of cloud cover around the bay ar here we look towards the bay bridge. at 7:00 this morning after the sunrise at 6:20, temperatures already in the 60s with the muggy feeling. some moisture in the air. by noon it will be still cloudy around the bay and at the coast, but then lots of sunshine this afternoon. inland temperatures warming into the mid areas. around the bay, mild, mid 70s.

at the coast the sea breeze will keep things in the mid 60s. a very pleasant day with a big warm-up ahead. kumasi. >> thanks, frances. in the south bay this weekend 40,000 people are expect at the san jose jazz summer fest. with the music there will be enhanced safety measures to match. "abc 7 news" reporter amanda del castillo has the details. >> reporter: if you reached wrap-around fencing in downtown san jose, you're in the right place. the san jose jazz summer feps is in the 30th year with 40,000 people expected over three days. beyond live music, enhanced security measures take center stage. >> we have added additional layers of perimeter security, some changes to bag checks and how people are entering the festival. it is kind of a big concern for folks this year. >> reporter: fewer entrances, extra emergency exits and additional help from private security companies, san jose police and fire. just as these agencies planned ahead, so have long-time festival goers. >> we talked about it. we were thinking if something happened how we were going to get out, where we were parking the car.

>> reporter: questions greg price has never needed answered before. he's also the ambulatory support services director at valley medical center and saw firsthand the response needed after the gilroy garlic festival shooting. >> we have precautions we have taken at the hospital today, so everybody is prepared in case. we're not hoping for something to happen, but it is best to be prepared. >> reporter: san jose resident veronica giles is another festival goer. for now she is trusting security. >> i try not to have it affect me so much that i can't come out to something like this and enjoy it. >> reporter: giles said she wore flat shoes to the festival for two reasons. one, she wanted to be comfortable walking around enjoying some of the booths. secondly, she says if anything did happen she wanted to be able to run. in san jose, i'm amanda del castillo, "abc 7 news". ♪ today is day two of the outside lands festival in san

francisco's golden gate park. for the first time this year, concert goers can purchase and consume cannabis in a designated area. increased security measures are also in place. today's headliners are childish gambino, flume and hosier. also this weekend is the gilroy rodeo. the day kicks off with a ranch rodeo competition but there will be heavy security put in place following the fatal gilroy garlic festival shooting. abc 7 reporter anser hassan has the story. >> reporter: don't let zachary au ratliff's small size fool you. the 13-year old took first place in his age group. >> it was awesome. i had a lot of confidence and it was my first trained for years for those short eight seconds. >> the main key is to lean forward and just lots of confidence. >> reporter: he got a big hug from dad. it is an extra special win since just a few months ago he broke his arm falling off a bull. >> this is his first rodeo back

from that injury, so it is awesome for a dad to see his son achieve what he wants to do, his first buckle, his first win. we're excited. >> reporter: there was a lot of excitement in the crowd and a noticeable increase in security. extra security measures and patrols are in place this year following the gilroy garlic festival shooting. >> there's a lot more security and they went through a lot of procedures to look at what they do here, what they did last year versus what they're doing this year. things to make sure everyone is safe, yes. >> it is important? >> it is really important. >> reporter: the rodeo is the first major event since the shooting. many in the crowd say they won't let fear get in the way of tradition. 2019 gilroy rodeo king carissa king says the strong turnout is a true sign of gilroy strong. >> it was amazing to see that. it kind of made my heart happy to see that gilroy is coming back together. >> the gilroy rodeo is also a fundraising event. a lot of the money will be used to help local schools. they have also set up a fund to

help the victims of the gilroy garlic festival. ans anser hassan. organizers say that after the mass shootings in gilroy, el paso and dayton, people needed to go somewhere to get together and heal. >> we are all brothers and sisters. it is one blood, one heart, one love, and hopefully today we start again back on that path to get to come together. >> we're all one people and we all should be treated as such and treat each other with humanity and love. >> a few dozen people showed up for the event including concord police officers who watched from a distance. we spoke with the gilroy foundation which has been raising money for the victims of the shooting. they say they've raised close to $700,000. if you would like to help you can find a link to donate on our website. it is abc7news.com. soulcycle gyms in san francisco are not offering classes tomorrow. the move comes amid protests

over company owner stephen ross who held a fundraiser yesterday for president trump's reelection campaign. so this protest was at soulcycle's castro location last night. online you can see the location has no sessions listed for today. this is the same for soulcycle's two other locations in the city. the protest organizers say they have long-term goals. >> what we envision is a day when lgbtq people can go to a gym and spend our money without fear that money is going to be used for ripping families apart at the border. >> now, we reached out to soulcycle for comment about the closures. we haven't heard anything back yet. ross's firm also owns equinox fitness. earlier this week equinox and soulcycle put out a joint statement, saying that ross is not involved in the management of either business. the man who heads the agency that over sees the oakland coliseum complex has resigned effective immediately. it comes after the million dollar deal that gave ring central the naming rights to the

coliseum. "the san francisco chronicle" sites sources who say executive director scott mcgiven whack involved in the deal. he denies he took any money. developing news, a possible solution to preserve the controversial murls at san francisco high school. the school board president plans to introduce a measure to cover the mural with panels. last night president steven clark told abc 7 the issue has become a distraction. critics say the 1936 fresco at washington high school depicts oppression of native americans and african-americans. two months ago the school board voted to paint over the art. a massive fire tore through a warehouse used as an artist collective in the fruitfield district. luz pena spoke with an artist that lost her life's work but has found a way to help neighbors get on their feet. >> some of the dresses like the snowfall dress i built for a

client, i will never get it back again. >> reporter: a dress that took 130 hours to make, paintings, woodwork, metal work, and memories of dozens of workers all gone with these flames. >> i turned on the news and saw the livestream and saw where it was burning. i'm incredibly sad because i lost 20 years of my work i had saved. >> reporter: she watched as firefighters hosed her studio along with colleagues' businesses. more than 50 firefighters battled the blaze for three hours. >> no fatalities, no one was living here. a very clean, well-maintained workspace where artists are able to create some very actual beautiful artwork. unfortunately that was lost. >> bays one and two, this area here includes g6 is still there. >> reporter: the three-alarm fire destroyed the front third of the warehouse. it did not detroit rachel's passion. she is executive director of a maker's space stepping up to help artists like her after this

fire. >> monster toys is offering scholarships so that people who need to use tools and access shops can do it and there's no out-of-pocket cost for them. we can only offer short-term scholarships for a couple of months while people get back on their feet, and then other spaces in the bay area are doing the same. >> reporter: the oakland fire battalion chief confirmed there were, in fact, several workers inside the warehouse during the fire. no injuries or casualties have been reported. firefighters continue to look for the official cause of the fire. in the newsroom, luz pena, "abc 7 news." this morning firefighters are looking out for hot spots in dublin. that's where a grass fire roared to life yesterday afternoon, burning 248 acres here fallon road. firefighters aggressively attacked the fire from the air and ground and say it was remarkable they were able to get full containment in just an hour. >> the smoke was very thick when i was coming off the highway. of course, when you see black where there's usually golden, rolling hills it is worrisome.

you also wonder how it started. >> at least two homeowners were told to prepare to evacuate, but so far there's no word on what started that fire. all evacuation orders have been lifted for the gulf fire in lake county. sky 7 flew above lake county thursday as flames burned dangerously close to homes. the fire has scorched 20 acres and it is 75% contained. happening today, hundreds of athletes will display swimming and running skills in san francisco. it is the 39th annual alcatraz escape from the rock do-a-thon. the course features a 1 1/2 mile swim from alcatraz to aquatic park. then the racers run seven miles to fort point, passing several landmarks and back to the park. they depart for alcatraz at 8:40 this morning and the race starts at 9:15. what would it be like for people taking part in that? >> the water will be chilly, about 59 degrees, but actually not bad. >> good. >> it is actually feeling a little muggy outside right now.

after being rescued the boy was put on a backboard and boated to a lot near fort mason and loaded on to an ambulance. the commute into san francisco from the east bay will be different monday. you will really notice it downtown near the salesforce transit center. ac transit buses will rue sum service tomorrow on first anniversary of the center's original grand opening. it was shut down six weeks later after workers discovered cracks in some steel beams. the beams were fixed and the center reopened on july 1st but without its main tenant, ac transit. some muni routes have been using the ground floor for a couple of weeks now. ac transit will be the first agency to run buses along the dedicated bus ramp to the center's third floor. a new exhibit is revealing a little-known side of one of the most famous poets in the history of the bay area. the photographs of lawrence furlingetti are on display at the center in san francisco, but rather than the beat nick area he is often associated with, these are pictures he took while serving in the navy during world

bay bridge right now. temperatures are very mild. it is even feeling a bit muggy with the moisture in the air. san francisco, 61 degrees. oakland, 66. san jose, 68 degrees right now. so we have lots of 60s all around the bay area. winds are light at this point, and as we look out towards the ferry building and the bay bridge, inland areas, some areas in the 50s, but just santa rosa. lots of other areas in the 60s right now from napa, fairfield, concord at 66 and livermore at 64 degree. i want to show you how it plays out today. we have the area of low pressure to our north, but it is just going to bring us some cloud cover this morning. then we could see a chance, a very slight chance of some sprinkles. some of our models picking up a little bit of sprinkles, maybe through the santa cruz mountains. it also could just be verga so the moisture may not hit the ground. then by about lunch time we will see the clouds pull back. this evening, mostly clear except clouds at the coast that

stay there most of the day. highs will be similar to yesterday's numbers. breezy at the coast with an on-shore flow keeping things cool. san francisco, half moon bay in the mid 60s, and we will see clearing through parts of the north bay with clouds passing through. 70s around the bay and low 80s inland. antioch warming up to 83 degrees. san jose, 80 degrees. santa cruz, 73. we will see some upper 70s in santa rosa and san rafael. overnight tonight, temperatures will drop into the 50s and a few 60s out there, still mild, with more of that cloud cover once again. some mid 50s at the coast. but get ready for a big warm-up. as that system moves to the east, we have high pressure building, and we will see a land breeze tomorrow. so temperatures will come up from the 80s inland to 90s tomorrow, and then around the bay we will see some upper 70s. and then check out monday. we're talking upper 90s for some inland areas, even at the

beaches we'll see up to probably 70 degrees in san francisco, into tuesday as well. so it is definitely going to feel like the beginning of the workweek. here is the accuweather seven-day forecast. so a few drops are possible. i showed you with that model, but it is probably unlikely. temperatures in the inland area, mid 80s. around the bay, mild and in the mid 70s. at the coast, in the mid 60s. much brighter and warmer tomorrow, and then monday will feel like summer in the inland areas. we are coming up by as much as 15 degrees for monday and tuesday. >> wow. >> around the bay it will be in the 80s. at the coast, mid 60s, even to near 70. so if kids are still on summer break, it will be a great day to head to the beach. >> a good beach day. thanks, frances. r wkst thisead, the new crime

drop-offs from $3 to $4. lyft will continue to provide airport service. ontario airport is one of the top ten busiest airports in california. the other options nearby include burbanks bop home, john way in long beach and of course lax. uber operates at all of those airports. a bay area police force is counting on a new member to help keep officers and the public safe from gun violence. his name is tex, as you see in this dem on-station you will see he is trained for a very specific purpose. officers say tex can sniff out firearms even when well-hidden inside a home or a car. they believe his ability to locate unseen weapons could save lives in situations ranging from traffic stops to search warrants and even pursuits. >> so a lot of times if we do encounter an armed subject they will run and a lot of times they will discard their firearm. so if we were to encounter that, you know, it would is a officers an hour or two to search a field, but it will take tex a

dinglasan in for lisa. good morning. >> good morning, kumasi. good morning, everyone. we are starting with quite a bit of cloud cover. here is live doppler 7 and the satellite image and you notice clouds around the bay and it has spread inland. i want to show you a shot of the golden gate bridge and it is socked in. sunrise is at 6:20 with temperatures mild in the 60s. as you step out the door this morning you might notice it feels muggy. there's a lot of moisture in the air. the clouds will stick around. by lunchtime we will start to warm up into the mid 70s, but we still will see clouds around the bay and along the coast. it will become mostly sunny by this afternoon with inland temperatures warming into the mid 80s around the bay. really comfortable and mild, mid 70s, but at the coast the sea breeze with an on-shore flow keeping things in the mid 60s. sunset is 8:08, so a pleasant day ahead with a big warm-up starting tomorrow. i will tell you more about that with the accuweather forecast. kumasi. thanks. the dmv motor program has

reportedly produced multiple errors and flaws. according to "the l.a. times" there were 84,000 duplicate records and twice that number with political party mistakes. state officials released an audit of the program yesterday. it highlighted issues including a limited amount of testing and inconsistent line of communication between the state agencies involved in the creation. the dmv has implemented changes proposed by the audit. this morning 17 democratic presidential candidates are scheduled to take part in a gun safety forum in des moines, iowa. it was quickly organized in the wake of the mass shootings in el paso and dayton last weekend. meanwhile, president trump expressing optimism late last night he can achieve gun reform, especially what he calls meaningful background checks. abc news reporter mary bruce has more. >> reporter: leaving the white house under growing pressure u president trump publicly pushing for stricter background checks. >> there's been no president that feels more strongly about the second amendment than i do. however, we need meaningful

background checks so that sick people don't get guns. >> reporter: and trump says he can get republicans and even the gun lobby on board. >> i have a lot of respect for the people at the nra and i have already spoken to them on numerous occasions, numerous occasions. frankly, we need intelligent background checks. >> reporter: here in iowa the democratic candidates quick to respond. >> he wants to say, oh, yes, i can support changes on gun safety and then say, but let's all be sure to bow to the nra. look, that just doesn't work. >> reporter: do you give him credit for trying to push for action on this? >> i will give the president credit when i actually see him sign legislation that enacts common sense gun safety legislation. what we need is for him to actually push mitch mcconnell and the senate to enact common sense gun safety legislation. i'm not holding my breath

though. >> reporter: meanwhile, the trump campaign is hitting joe biden for this comment. >> we have this notion that somehow if you are poor you cannot do it. poor kids are just as bright and just as talented as white kids, wealthy kids, black kids, asian kids. >> reporter: biden's campaign says the former vice president misspoke, but the president piling on. >> joe biden is not playing with a full deck. this is not somebody you can have as your president. but if he got the nomination, i would be thrilled. >> reporter: mary bruce, abc news, washington. new developments about a proposed straight pride parade in modesto. the city has denied a permit for the controversial event. after weeks of debate, the city council says organizers did not get the event insured, also citing safety concerns. the parade was advertised on social media as celebrating heterosexuality, masculinity and more. organizers can reapply for a permit in a nonresidential area, but it is unlikely they will be able to find a carrier to

provide insurance. new details about a man convicted of terrorism. he has been released nearly two weeks after a federal judge overturned his conviction. the was released. he was convicted in 2006 after he was accused of plotting an attack on the united states after attending a training camp in pakistan. new developments, a suspect is awaiting trial after burglarizing a home in san francisco's castro district. we first brought you the story last month. the homeowner was in sonoma county for cancer treatment when she got back to her house to find it ransacked. the burglar stole jewelry, left behind a used heroin needle and dirty dishes. padilla, a long-time san francisco resident, said she may leave the city. the san francisco district attorney's office charged 31-year-old carlos gomez miranda with burglary and grand theft.

his trial starts in nine days. well, this weekend you can catch a very special showing of harry potter with live music. so the audience will see "harry potter and the prisoner of ascaban" on the silver screen while a symphony orchestra performs the soundtrack live. it will be freelanced, composed of some of the best musicians in the area. there also will be a 65-piece choir. the premiere conductor of the orchestra justin freer spoke with abc 7's kristen sze on abc live yesterday. he wants to show how important the orchestra is to film experience. >> in this case the people that are there, if not all, most are seeing it for the second time, third time, 20th time, but the shared experience is i think everyone realizes film music plays an important way in a film in a heightened way when you are there experiencing it in the life environment. >> he has conducted for the

to extensive cloud cover with live doppler 7 and the satellite image. you see clouds in the bay. this is due to a system to our north. it is bringing numerous lightning strikes to the areas east of redding earlier this morning, and this is going to bring us some clouds and on-shore flow, but this will move east early next week. that is when we will see temperatures really warm up. right now we are mostly in the 60s. san francisco, 62. oakland, 66. san jose is even 68 degrees right now. a little cooler in the north bay where we are seeing a bit of clearing. santa rosa and napa at 59. we have some moisture in the air. it is feeling a bit muggy as you head out the door this morning. notice by 7:00 we will still see a lot of cloud cover all around the bay, into parts of the east bay. by lunchtime we start to see it clear, and notice our models picking up some moisture. so the areas of green is where we could see a very slight chance of some sprinkles, but it looks like it will be verga at this point. it will dry out by the time it hits the ground. by this afternoon, more sunshine for everybody into this evening
