area. this is "abc7 mornings." good morning. it is saturday, august 10th. i'm kumasi aaron. we're on stand by for an abc news special report expect any minute now. when it starts we will take that live. in the meantime we are getting a look at our weather. frances is here for lisa. good morning, frances. >> good morning. this is an abc news special report. thanks for joining us. we are coming on the air with breaking news. sources telling abc news that jeffrey epstein has died, an apparent suicide overnight at the metropolitan correctional center in manhattan. that's according to three law enforcement sources who gave that information to abc news. this is the federal lockup where the multi-millionaire was being held while awaiting trial on federal sex trafficking charges. stephanie ramos has been covering the story and joins us with more. what are you lefrpg? >> sources tell abc news he took his own life. the exact timing and circumstances are unclear right now, but the mega millionaire is

accused of exploiting and abusing dozens of minor girls. he had been on suicide watch in a new york city jail. you will remember he was found unresponsive in his cell last month with marks on his neck. initially investigators thought he had tried to take his own life. they were then looking into whether he was assaulted by another inmate or if he had even paid someone to beat him up. epstein's attorneys had been fighting to get him out on bail, but a judge refused. prosecutors argued the mega millionaire's lifestyle and well it made him an extreme flight risk. >> this is a major development. this case just getting under way. stephanie ramos, thanks so much. i want to bring in abc's tom yamos, anchor of "world news tonight" on the weekends who has been following this epstein saga since the beginning. tom, what are you learning this morning? >> reporter: well, this is just a stunning turn of events. as stephanie had reported, there were thoughts he had tried to commit suicide earlier and some proof of that. just really a surprise shock to

many of the victims who have been hoping that they would see justice. jeffrey epstein was accused of sex trafficking girls under age and he was set to go to trial later this year. he had, quote, unquote, beat this case more than ten years ago in florida, but the u.s. attorney in the southern district of new york is building a new case against jeffrey epstein, arresting him and raiding his manhattan mansion. inside they found even more evidence of pictures of underage girls, and this also follows news just yesterday of one of his associates, a separate court case, but one of epstein's accusers coming out and naming names of some very prominent businessmen and politicians who all denied they did anything inappropriate. but they start to name names. it is sort of coming out in the public, and one of the associates, it was thought that some of the epstein thoshts would be brought in and possibly charged criminally. the case was only getting

bigger. so many young girls allegedly abused by jeffrey epstein, thought they finally were going to see justice. they thought they would see him rot in a jail cell. it is unclear at this point what they're thinking today, if this indeed is justice. but jeffrey epstein, the monster they painted, is no more. >> now, a stunning turn of developments here, tom. it raises a lot of questions about developments, tom. it raises a lot of questions where the case goes from here. you where the cases go from here. we mentioned the names you mentioned in the unsealed documents. epstein dying of an apparent suicide, what could it mean for prosecutors as they try to put it all together now? >> the criminal case against jeffrey ep sestein personally i over. if they go after some of his associates, you have to remember there are allegations that several women worked with jeffrey epstein to procure some of the young girls, essentially mad always if you will. so far none of the women have been charged criminally yet, but there's thinking that the u.s.

attorney may go after some of these people. so the criminal case, though it is not even there yet, could continue in that direction. there are also civil cases because you have to remember jeffrey epstein is worth at least $500 million. multiple properties in new york, new mexico, palm beach, and he had a private island as well. so you have to think some of the civil cases may proceed forward since now the criminal case against jeffrey epstein is essentially over. a lot of questions still to be had on this, and you have to remember these allegations happened over years. we are talking about multiple, multiple women who say they were abused by jeffrey epstein when they were underage. so still a lot of questions, and this is definitely shocking to a lot of people. but if jeffrey epstein and the case against him was pretty strong, prosecutors said they had a strong case against him, if jeffrey epstein thought he had any chance of beating this case this time, clearly he

muggy. by noon, the clouds will stick around the bay and the coast, and becoming sunny this afternoon. inland temperatures in the mid 80s around the bay, mid 70s, and at the coast mid 60s with the onshore flow. sunsets at 8:08 and get ready for rapid warm-up starting tomorrow. kumasi. >> thanks, frances. in the south bay this weekend 40,000 people are expected at the san jose jazz summer fest. there will be music, also enhanced safety measures to match. abc news reporter amanda del castillo has the details. >> reporter: if you have reached wrap-around fencing in downtown san jose you are in the right place. the san jose jazz summer fest is in its 30th year with 40,000 people expected over three years. beyond live music, enhanced security measures are taking center stage. >> we added additional layers of perimeter security. some changes to bag checks and how people are entering this year. >> reporter: fewer entrances, extra emergency exits and

♪ well, today is day two of the outside lands festival in san jose's golden gate park. for the first time this year, concert goers can purchase and consume cannabis in a designated area. increased security measures are also in place. today's headlines are childish gambino, flume and hosier. soulcycle gyms in san francisco are not offering classes today. the move comes amid protests over company owner stephen ross who held a fund-raiser for president trump's election campaign. this protest was at soulcycle's castro location last night. online you can see the location has no sessions listed for today. it is the same for soulcycle's two other locations in the city. the protest organizers say they have long-term goals. >> what we envision is a day when lgbtq people can go to a gym and spend our money without

fear that money will be used for ripping families apart at the border. >> we reached out to soulcycle for comment about the closures but haven't heard anything back yet. ross's firm also owns equinox fitness. earlier this year equinox and -- earlier this week, excuse me, they put out a joint statement saying ross is not involved in the management of either business. the man who heads the agency that oversees the oakland coliseum complex has resigned effective immediately. this comes after the million dollar deal that gave ring central the naming rights to the coliseum. san francisco chronicle cite sources who say coliseum authority executive director scott mckib enwen was involved possible conflict of interest involving a $50,000 commission for negotiating the deal. mckibben denies he took any money. developing news this morning, a possible solution to preserve the controversial murals at a san francisco high school. the school board president plans to introduce a measure next week to cover the murals with panels.

last night president steven clark told abc 7 the issue has become a distraction. critics say the 1936 fresco at washington high school depicts the oppression of native americans and african-americans. two months ago the school board voted to paint over the art. happening today, hundreds of athletes will display their swimming and running skills in san francisco. this is the 39th annual alcatraz escape from the rock. it features a 1 1/2 mile swim from alcatraz to aquatic park. then the racers run seven miles to fort point, passing all kind of landmarks and then going back to aquatic park. they will depart for alcatraz at 8:30 this morning and the race starts at 9:15. yes, she said the water is cold but hopefully it will be warmer once they get started. >> a little bit. this is actually the warmest time of the year for the water temperature, around 59 to 60 degrees this month and next month. so a good time to have it, but it is still pretty cold.

a massive fire tore through a warehouse used as an artist collective in oakland's fruitfield district. luz pena spoke with an artist who lost her life's work but has found a way to help neighbors get back on their feet. >> some of the dresses like this snowfall dress that i built for a client, i'll never get that back again. >> reporter: a dress that took 130 hours to make, paintings, woodwork, metal work, and memories of dozens of workers all gone with these flames. >> i turned on the news and saw the livestream and saw where it was burning. i'm incredibly sad because i lost 20 years of my work that i had saved. >> reporter: rachel watched as firefighters hosed down her studio along with colleagues' businesses. more than 50 firefighters battled the blaze for nearly three hours. >> no fatalities. no one was here. a very clean, well-maintained workspace where artists are able to create some very actual

beautiful artwork. unfortunately it was lost. >> reporter: bays one and two, there. ea >> the three-alarm fire destroyed the front third of the warehouse. what it didn't destroy is rachel's passion. she is the executive director of monster toys. >> monster toys is offering scholarships so people that need to use tools and access shops can do it and there's not out-of-pocket costs for them. we can only offer short-term scholarships for a couple of months while people get back on their feet. other spaces in the bay area are doing the same. >> reporter: the oakland fire battalion chief confirmed there were several workers inside the warehouse during the fire. no injuries or casualties were reported. firefighter continue to look for the official cause of the fire. in the newsroom, luz pena, "abc 7 news". a bomb squad gave the all clear at a milpitas walmart last

night. police were called to the store around 6:15 after a suspicious device was found. shoppers were forced to leave during peak shopping hours. investigators believe the package was fireworks. a bomb sniffing dog did search the entire store to be safe. some chase credit card holders in canada got a huge surprise, in bank forgiving all of their credit card debt. one customer says he feels the weight of the world has been lifted from his shoulders. >> i don't believe that. so i actually checked several different sources beside the customer service rep i spoke with. sure enough, they forgave the debt. i was amazed. >> i can see why. chase is not saying how much it is writing off or how many customers will benefit. a father and child, they're expected to be okay after they were rescued from a cliff at san francisco's aquatic park. just before 5:30 last night the child was on a bike when he fell down the cliff. firefighters say his dad went down the cliff to try to help.

after being rescued, the boy was put on a backboard and then boated to a lot near fort mason and then loaded into an ambulance. the commute into san francisco from the east bay will be different on monday. you will really notice it downtown near the salesforce transit center. ac transit buses will resume service tomorrow on the first anniversary of the center's grand opening. the original grand opening. it was shut down just six weeks later after workers discovered cracks in some steel beams. the beams were fixed and the center reopened on july 1st, but without its main tenant, ac transit. some muni routes have been using the ground floor for a couple of weeks now. ac transit will be the first agency to run buses along the dedicated bus ramp to the center's third floor. all right. now it is 6:18, and frances is here with a look at our forecast. good morning, frances. >> good morning, kumasi and everyone. we are starting the day with a typical start, lots of clouds and fogs especially along the coast. you can see it here with live doppler 7 and the satellite image. you see the low clouds into parts of the east bay as well.

this is all due to a system to our north bringing some lightning strikes to the areas east of redding and near the oregon border where we have a red flag warning in effect throughout the day today because they're concerned that some of the lightning might start some fires. but for us dealing with the low clouds right now as we check out this live shot from emeryville over the bay bridge, san francisco right there in the background. temperatures have been very mild. so it is feeling a bit muggy right now. san francisco, 61 degrees. san jose, 68. we have quite a bit of moisture as well in the air. a live shot of sfo shows low cloud ceilings causing flight arrival delays of about 55 minutes. in santa rosa and napa it has cooled to 58 degrees, but still very mild. lots of 60s through fairfield, concord and livermore right now. our forecast animation shows the clouds sticking around during the next few hours. then by lunchtime it starts to break up a little bit. notice we're picking up some

moistu moisture, the areas of green there. there's a chance of a possible sprinkle but talking less than 10% so i don't think we will see anything at all. by this afternoon we will see some clearing into this evening as well, and then high pressure really rebuilds starting tomorrow. we will see some changes. for today though you can look for a high of 80 degrees in san jose for the jazz festival. again, we are picking up that moisture with our models, the green, but i don't think we're going to see any rain. also on the peninsula, look for a comfortable 73 degrees for the aloha festival and breezy at the coast. so if you are heading to outside lands today, i think you still want a jacket. temperatures will be in the low 60s this afternoon. downtown s to 66 for the giants where they will have more sun shine. look for upper 70s, novato, san rafael, petaluma, sonoma. near 80 degrees in ukiah and cloverdale. we will see high clouds passing

through the north bay it . it will be nice and mild in the east bay. 76 at fremont and plenty of sunshine farther inland. in fact, enjoy the milder weather, temperatures in the low to mid 80s today, because things will ramp up over the next few days. 85 in brentwood. get ready for the warm-up especially inland. tomorrow we'll start to see low 90s and around the bay we will see lots of upper 70s. then monday things really heat up. upper 90s for the inland areas. near 80 around the bay. high pressure continues through tuesday, and here is the accuweather seven-day forecast. so we've got a chance of a few drops possible. again, very unlikely. inland temperatures, mid 80s around the bay. mid 80s and at the coast -- around the bay mid 70s. at the coast, mid 60s. brighter and warmer tomorrow. high pressure builds and then we have really warm weather monday into tuesday. >> come on over. >> you caught me coming in,

news to build a better bay area. this is "abc7 mornings." good morning, everyone. we are starting this half hour with a look at the weather. meteorologist frances dinglasan is in for lisa this morning. good morning, frances. >> good morning, kumasi. we are starting with a lot of cloud cover once again with live doppler 7 and the satellite image but there are parts we are getting partly cloudy conditions like the north bay. from mount tam we saw a beautiful s beautiful sunrise at 6:20. it feels a little muggy with all of the moisture in the air, cloudy at the bay and around the coast by lunchtime. but this afternoon it becomes mostly sunny except for the low clouds at the coast.

inland temperatures, in the mid 80s. around the bay, mid 70s. at the coast, the on shore flow and sea breeze keeps things in the mid 60s. then sunset tonight at 8:08. it still will be pleasant with lots of 70s around the bay and inland areas. tomorrow things will start to warm up and we could see temperatures about 15 degrees warmer for the beginning of the workweek. i will tell you about that coming up in the seven-day forecast. >> all right. thanks, frances. breaking news this morning, law enforcement officials tell abc news disgraced finance year jeffrey epstein committed suicide overnight at a federal prison in manhattan. he was being held there pending trial on federal sex trafficking charges. epstein had been on suicide watch since last month when he was found unresponsive in his cell with neck bruises. he was set to stand trial next year for allegedly sexually abusing dozens of minor girls as young as 14. he pleaded not guilty. sources say epstein hanged himself. the exact timing and circumstances surrounding his death are not clear. the dmv's motor voter

program has reportedly produced multiple errors and flaws. according to ""the l.a. times"" there were nearly 84,000 duplicate records and twice that number with political party mistakes. state officials released an audit with the program yesterday. it highlighted issues including a limited amount of testing and inconsistent lines of communication between the state agencies involved in its creation. the dmv says it has implemented the changes proposed by the audit. this morning 18 democratic candidates are scheduled to take part in a gun safety forum in des moines, iowa. it was quickly organized in the wake of the mass shootings in el paso and dayton last weekend. meanwhile, president trump is expressing optimism last night that he can achieve gun reform, specifically what he calls meaningful background checks. abc news reporter mary bruce has more. >> reporter: leaving the white house under growing pressure, president trump publicly pushing for stricter background checks. >> there's been no president that feels more strongly about

the second amendment than i do. however, we need meaningful background checks so that sick people don't getnd even the gun lobby on board. >> i have a lot of respect for the people at the nra and i have already spoken to them on numerous occasions, numerous occasions, and, frankly, we need intelligent background checks. >> reporter: here in iowa the democratic candidates quick to respond. >> he wants to say, "oh, yes, i could support changes on gun safety" and then say, "but let's all be sure to bow to the nra." look, that just doesn't work. >> reporter: do you give him credit for trying to push for action on this. >> i will give the president credit when i actually see him sign legislation that enacts common sense gun safety legislation. what we need is for him to actually push mitch mcconnell and the senate to enact common

sense gun safety legislation. i'm not holding my breath though. >> reporter: meanwhile, the trump campaign is hitting joe biden for this comment. >> we have this notion that somehow if you are poor you cannot do it. poor kids are just as bright and just as talented as white kids, wealthy kids, black kids, asian kids. >> reporter: biden's campaign says the former vice president misspoke but the president piling on. >> joe biden is not playing with a full deck. this is not somebody you can have as your president, but if he got the nomination i would be thrilled. >> reporter: mary bruce, abc news, washington. new developments about a proposed straigt pride parade in modesto. the city has denied a permit for this controversial event. after weeks of debate, the city council says the organizers didn't get the event insured and also cited safety concerns. the parade was advertised on social media as celebrating heterosexuality, masculinity and more. organizers can reapply for a permit in a nonresidential area,

but it isn't likely they will be able to find a carrier to provide insurance. this weekend you can watch a special showing of "harry potter" with live music. the audience will see it on the silv silver screen while a symphony orchestra performs live. it will be composed of some of the best musicians in our area and there will be a 65-piece choir. the premiere conductor of the orchestra spoke with abc 7's kristen sze on abc live yesterday. he wants to show the next generation how important the orchestra is to the film experience. >> in this case for the thousands of people that are there, if not all most are seeing it for the second, third time, the 20th time, but the shared experience is that everyone i think realizes file many music plays an incredibly important role in film, in a heightened way when you are there experiencing it in its live environment. >> freer has conducted for the "harry potter" movies as well as

the next one, and who else are we related to and who else needs their headstone cleaned. his grandpa helps him with the financing. he will be cleaning a headstone for him in return for the logo. >> we have a water sprayer, two bottles of d2. we have three soft bristle brushes and some jugs of water. it is very fun seeing the dirty become clean. i get to learn history about my family tree. my nana doesn't want me to do every headstone, just like ones that i get called for. >> people want their headstones liened and maybe can cleaned ant can cleaned and can't do it, maybe don't have the time or the

days in unbearable heat. now at cal, you got slip and slide day. 75 feet of sliding and sloshing. old school coaches like bill parcells have to be looking at this wondering, what is going on in the sport these days. good times at cal. good times during your weekend. that's a wrap on morning sports. enjoy your weekend, everybody. i'm larry beil. all right. time now, it is 6:48. frances is here with a look at our forecast. good morning, frances. >> good morning, kumasi. good morning, everyone. once again the live doppler 7 and the satellite image, clouds at the coast, but clearing in the north bay right now. there's a system to our north and as it circulates counterclockwise, you see it brought lightning strikes to the areas east of redding. because of the lightning there's a concern it could start some fires, so a red flag warning in effect through today for some of the areas near the oregon border. for us, we are just dealing with the low clouds.

a live shot from emeryville. you can see a gray start right now over san francisco and parts of the bay, and temperatures are mild, in the 60s. san francisco, 61. oakland, 66. san jose, 68 degrees right now. as we look at sfo, you will see the low cloud ceilings. that's why we have flight arrival delays of about 55 minutes. santa rosa and napa in the upper 50s and we see lots of low to mid 60s in fairfield, concord and livermore. here is a look at the animation. we will see the system to our north move east. you will see the model animation shows a little bit of green. that's where we could see a few drops. it is actually unlikely, but it is out there so the chance, i'll let you know, is in the forecast. but by this afternoon and this evening that system moves east. we have lots of clearing around the bay, but the clouds still at the coast tonight and into tomorrow. temperatures will be on the milder side. we will see breezy conditions at the coast.

san francisco, downtown getting up to 66 degrees. san jose, 80 degrees. lots of 70s around the bay. oakland, 72. inland areas only in the low 80s today, like antioch at 83 and livermore at 81. santa rosa, up to 79. so high clouds passing through through parts of the north bay as well. and then overnight lows will be in the 50s tonight, so mild, especially in the interior areas where we could see near 60 degrees in antioch. but get ready for the warm-up because the system moves east and then high pressure builds, and we will see an offshore flow. we will even get more of a land breeze. tomorrow we will start to see some low 90s. enjoy the cool temperatures for the inland areas while you can. you will need the air conditioning starting tomorrow. some low 90s through concord, antioch. santa rosa up to 88, but still cooler at the coast, in the 60s. by monday, upper 90s for fairfield and antioch, even near 80 degrees around the bay.
