news to build a better bay area. this is "abc7 mornings." good morning. it is saturday, august 10th. i'm kumasi aaron. we are getting started this morning with a quick look at our forecast. here is meteorologist frances dinglasan in for lisa this morning. good morning, frances. >> good morning, kumasi. good morning, everyone. we are starting the day with typical summertime weather. we have the low clouds and the fog at the coast. here is live doppler 7 and the satellite image. we see some high clouds passing through the north bay because of a system to our north. and this live shot from mount tam shows clearing as well through the north bay. mostly cloudy for everyone at

9:00 with temperatures in the 60s. a little bit of a muggy start. by lunchtime it still will be cloudy around the bay and at the coast, but then becoming mostly sunny by this afternoon. inland temperatures on the mild side, in the mid 80s. around the bay, mid 70s. at the coast with the breezy on-shore flow, in the mid 60s. a warm-up starts tomorrow. i will let you know how warm, kumasi. >> thanks. breaking news this morning, sources tell abc news that accused sex trafficker jeffrey epstein has died by suicide. he was awaiting trial in a new york city prison. here is abc reporter stephanie ramos. >> reporter: sources tell abc news that he took his own life. the mega millionaire is accused of exploiting dozens of underage girls. he had been on suicide watch in that new york facility. you will remember he was found unresponsive in his cell last month with marks on his neck. initially investigators thought he had tried to take his own life. they were then looking into whether he was assaulted by

another inmate or if he had even paid someone to beat him up. epstein's attorneys had been fighting to get him out on bail, but a judge refused. prosecutors argued the mega millionaire's lifestyle and wealth made him an extreme flight risk. now, this comes just a day after bombshell court documents were unsealed in a case connected to epstein. the thousands and page goes and deposition testimony revealing accusations against some famous names. i'm stephanie ramos, abc news, new york. in the south bay this weekend 40,000 people are expect at the san jose jazz summer fest. with the music there will be enhanced safety measures to match. "abc 7 news" reporter amanda del castillo has the details. >> reporter: if you have reached wrap-around fencing in downtown san jose you're in the right place. the san jose jazz sum esh fest is in its 30th year. beyond live music, enhanced security measures are taking center stage. >> we added additional layers of

perimeter security, some changes to bag checks and how people are entering the festival. it is kind of a big concern for folks this year. >> reporter: fewer entrances, extra emergency exits and additional help from private security companies, san jose police and fire. just as these agencies planned ahead, so have long-time festival goers. >> we kind of talked about it. we were thinking about if something happened how we were going to get out, where we were parking the car. >> reporter: questions greg price has never needed answered before. he's also the ambulatory support services director at valley medical center and saw firsthand the response needed after the gilroy garlic festival shooting. >> we have precautions we have taken at the hospital today, so everybody is prepared in case. we're not hoping for something to happen, but it is best to be prepared. >> reporter: san jose resident veronica giles is another festival goer. for now she is trusting security. >> i try not to have that affect me so much i can't come out to something like this and enjoy it. >> reporter: now, giles says she

wore flat shoes to the festival for two reasons. one, she wanted to be comfortable as she was walking around enjoying some of the booths. secondly, she says that if anything did happen she wanted to be able to run. in san jose, i'm amanda del wel the outside lands festival in san francisco's golden gate park. for the first time this year concert goers can purchase and consume cannabis in a designated area. increased security measures are also in place. today's headliners are childish gambino, flume and hoosier. latino organizations invited the concord community to come together for a vigil last night. organizers say after the mass shootings in gilroy, el paso and dayton, people needed to go somewhere, get together and heal. >> we are all brothers and sisters. it is one blood, one heart, one

love. hopefully, today we start again back on that path to get -- to come together. >> we are all one people and we all should be treated as such and treat each other with humanityeoe showed up for the event including some concord police officers who watched from a distance. we spoke with the gilroy foundation which has been raising money for the victims of the shooting and they say they've raised close to $700,000. if you would like to help out you can find a link to donate on our website, abc7news.com. soulcycle gymnastics in san francisco are not offering classes today. it comes amid a protest for stephen rose who held a fund-raiser for president trump's election campaign. well, this protest was at soulcycle's castro location last night. online you can see the location has no sessions listed for today. this is the same for the two other soulcycle locations in the city. the protest organizers say they have long-term goals.

>> what we envision is a day when lgbtq people can go to a gym and spend our money without fear that money will be used for ripping families apart at the border. >> now, we reached out to soulcycle for comment about the closures. we haven't heard anything back yet. ross's firm also owns equinox fitness. earlier this week equinox and soulcycle put out a joint statement saying ross is not involved in the management of either business. the man who heads the agency that oversees the oakland coliseum complex has resigned effective immediate live. it comes after the million dollar deal that gave ring central the naming rights to the coliseum. it is reported that he was possibly involved in a conflict of interest involving a $50,000 fee for negotiating the deal. he denies he took any money. developing news this morning, a partial solution to preserve the controversial murals at a san francisco high school. the school board president plans to introduce a measure next week

to cover the mural with panels. last night president steven clark told abc 7 the issue has become a distraction. critics say the 1936 fresco at washington high school depicts the oppression of native americans and african-americans. two months ago the school board voted to paint over the art. a massive fire tore through a warehouse used as an artists' collective in oakland's fruitville district. "abc 7 news" reporter luz peen kbrau spoke to an artist that lost her life's work but has found a way to help get neighbors become on their feet. >> some of the dresses like this snowfall dress that i built for a client, i'll never get that back again. >> reporter: a dress that took 130 hours to make, paintings, woodwork, metal work and memories of dozens of workers all gone with the flames. >> i turned on the news and saw the livestream and saw where it was burning. i'm incredibly sad because i lost 20 years of my work that i had saved. >> reporter: rachel watched as firefighters hosed down her studio along with her

colleagues' businesses. more than 50 firefighters battled the blaze for nearly three hours. >> no fatalities, no one was living here. a very clean, very well-maintained workspace where artists are able to create some very actual beautiful artwork. unfortunately it was lost. >> bays one and two, this area here including g-6 where the laser is, that's all still there. >> reporter: the three-alarm fire destroyed the front third of the warehouse. what it didn't destroy was rachel's passion. she is the executive director of ace monster toys, a maker's space stepping up to help artists like her after this warehouse fire. >> ace monster toys is offering scholarships so that people who need to use tools and access shops can do it and there's no out-of-pocket cost for them. we can only offer short-term scholarships for a couple of months while people get back on their feet, and then other spaces in the bay area are doing the same. >> reporter: the oakland fire battalion chief confirmed there were, in fact, several workers inside the warehouse during the

fire. no injuries or casualties have been reported. for e official cause of theok in thesrm, pabc mning firefighters are looking out for hot spots in dublin. that's where a grass fire roared to life yesterday afternoon, burning 248 acres near fallon road. firefighters aggressively attacked the fire from the air and the ground. they say it was remarkable they were able to get full containment in just an hour. >> the smoke was very thick when i was coming off the highway, and, of course, when you see black where there's usually these golden, rolling hills, that is always really worrisome. you also wonder how did it start. >> at least two homeowners were told to prepare to evacuate. so far there's no word on what started that fire. well, all evacuation orders have been lifted for the gulf fire in lake county. sky 7 flew blough lake county on thursday as flames burned dangerously close to homes. the fire has scorched 20 acres and now it is 80% contained. happening today, hundreds of

athletes will display swimming and running skills in san francisco. it is the 39th annual alcatraz esca from the rock race. the course features a 1 1/2 mile swim from alcatraz to aquat aquatic park. they will depart for alcatraz in about 30 minutes this morning and the race starts at 9:15. whew. >> so the water will be a little chilly but what about everything else? hopefully warm to balance that. >> we are starting to see sunshine in a few spots. the water is about 59 degrees, but right now we have gray skies over emeryville and the bay. temperatures will be mild today. much warmer though starting tomorrow. i'll let you know which neighborhoods may be near triple digits this week. >> oh, gosh. thanks, frances. >> or next week. also next, a dramatic rescue after a child tumbles down a cliff while riding a bike in san francisco. and this almost sound too good to be true. why a major bank cleared everyone's credit card debt.

a bomb squad gave the all-clear at a milpitas walmart last night. police were called to the store around 6:15 after a suspicious device was found. shoppers were forced to leave during peak shopping hours and investigators believe the package was fireworks.

the bomb sniffing dog did search the entire store to be safe. some chase credit card holders in canada got a huge surprise. the bank is forgiving all of their credit card debt. the stunning move comes after a decision last year by the bank to exit the canadian credit card market. one customer says he feels like the weight of the world has come off his shoulders. >> i don't believe that. so i actually checked several different sources beside the customer service rep i spoke with and, sure enough, they forgave the debt. i was amazed. >> he was like this can't be true. chase is not saying how much it is writing off or how many customers benefit. a child and father are expected to be okay after rescue from a cliff in aquatic park. the child fell down the cliff last night and then the father went down the cliff to help. after being rescued the boy was put on a backboard and boated to a lot in fort mason and then loaded into an ambulance. the commute into san francisco from the east bay will be different on monday.

you will really notice it downtown at the salesforce transit center though. ac transit buses will resume service tomorrow on the first anniversary of the original grand opening. it was shut down six weeks later after workers discovered cracks in steel beams. the beams were fixed and the center reopened on july 1st but without its main tenant, ac transit. some muni routes have been using the ground floor for a couple of weeks now. ac transit will be the first agency to run buses along the dedicated bus ramp to the center's third floor. a new exhibit is revealing a little-known side of one of the most famous poets in the history of the bay area. the photographs of lawrence ferlinghetti are on display at the harvey milk photo center in san francisco. but rather than the beatnik area he is often associated with, these are pictures ferlinghetti took while serving in the navy during world war ii, from the invai invasion of normandy and the pacific and the event that turned him into a leader in the

peace movement. >> six weeks after his arrival he and some ship mates asked for leave and took a train and saw nagasaki. it changed his perception of war, you know, the war where everybody went out and said, "oh, we're fighting the nazis," and then he saw what it looks like when a city has disappeared, when 70,000 people died. in that instant, that's when he became a passivist in so many different ways, as a poet, as a publisher, as a painter. all of his life to this day he really wants peace. >> the lawrence ferlinghetti photos will be on exhibit at the harvey milk photo center through september 14th. admission to see them is free. stargazers will want to head outdoors this weekend to watch the meteor shower. it will peak between tomorrow

and tuesday, but moonlight will make it harder to see it this year. so the best time to check it out will be tonight. the best place, somewhere dark as you can imagine, but you might have to leave the city if you want the best views. for more specific details on the best times, the best places to watch, visit abc7news.com or frances is here. we can just ask her. where should we go? >> yes, i would say head inland because, of course, we have the clouds at the coast and near san francisco as well. you can see it here with live doppler 7, with the satellite image overlaid on top. we have low coastal clouds. we also have high clouds passing through parts of the north bay and that's due to a system to our north. you can see it circulating with counterclockwise direction, bringing some lightning strikes to parts of northern california. because of the lightning, there's a threat of starting a fire, so red flag warning in effect for some areas through tonight, especially near the oregon border. for us it means lots of clouds, especially at the golden gate bridge. socked in right now, but temperatures have been on the mild side this morning.

san francisco is currently 61, but check out san jose. it is already 69 degrees. i want to show you another live shot, this one as we look from mount tam. you see some of the clouds breaking through right now, so we are seeing some clearing in the inland areas and parts of the south bay. temperatures are mostly in the 60s except for the north bay. in santa rosa we had temperatures drop down into the 50s, but look at that. concord, 68. livermore, 66. at 9:00 we are still seeing lots of extensive cloud cover over parts of the bay and you see the system possibly bringing the threat of light showers to our north, but for us we should be mostly dry. then by this afternoon, mostly clear. sunny except along the beaches, and then temperatures will be on the mild side. as the system kicks east, we have high pressure building tomorrow and that will really change our temperatures. highs today will be near normal in san jose, 80 degrees, with

some high clouds passing through for the san jose jazz festival. then there's the menlo horse show where temperatures will hit 75 this afternoon. breezy at the coast. if you are heading to the outside lands festival, 63 degrees, so i would still have a light jacket. downtown san francisco, 66, with more sunshine. lots of upper 70s through the north bay. petaluma and novato, san rafael at 78. near 80 in cloverdale and ukiah. you see the high clouds passing through as well throughout the day. in the east bay, look for mild numbers in the 70s. berkley, 74. oakland, 72. fremont, thecobl mild temperatures in the interior on because this is where we will see things really heat up over the next few days starting next week, and look for san ramon to hit 81. the warmest spot will be about brentwood, 85 degrees. now tomorrow as high pressure builds, we will see the low 90s inland. lots of upper 70s, near 80 around the bay.

with millions of us still on summer vacation it is hard to think about winter holiday plans, but not so for a los altos family. they were all set for a ski trip in utah for christmas but needed a little help from "7 on your side's" michael finney. >> mark allard found the perfect place for a christmas gathering in utah. >> we went last summer and it was just beautiful. we loved it but, of course, it is very well-known for wintertime skiing. >> it was a three bedroom townhouse right in the heart of park city. >> it was perfect because it is two families, close to downtown,

walking distance, close to the ski lifts. very nice on the inside. like our two families could hang out and cook dinner. >> the price on airbnb, just $49 a night. that's a bargain during the holidays, $449 a night. >> i contacted the host, is this the right rate. we immediately got a confirmation, you're book. >> great. mark paid the deposit, bought four airline tickets and their holiday plans were set. or were they? >> two months later i receive an e-mail saying basically your reservation has been cancelled. >> out of the blue the airbnb host cancelled the booking, refunded his money, no explanation. a mystery until mark checked the listing. >> more than double, far more than double. >> mark booked the place for $4,100. now the host was asking for $13,000 for that week, $9,000 more. >> i couldn't believe it. i mean i just thought if you have a reservation, that reservation means reservation. >> airbnb told mark it wasn't

it has already brought two families some holiday joy. i'm michael finney, "7 on your side". a bay area police force is counting on a new member to help keep officers and the public safe from gun violence. his name is tex. as you will see in the demonstration at the south san francisco police department, he is trained for a specific purpose. officers say tex can sniff out firearms even when they're well hidden inside of a home or aer ka. they believe his ability to locate unseen weapons could save lives in situations ranging from traffic stops to search warrants and even pursuits. >> so a lot of times if we do encounter an armed subject they will run, and a lot of times they will discard their firearm. so if we were to encounter that, you know, it would take officers an our or two to search a fielder, but it will take sex a third of the time to search that field for the gun. >> officers say tex is the first trained firearms dog to be deployed by a police department in san mateo county. still to come on "abc7 mornings," after weeks of

lots of fog at the coast. you can see it here with live doppler 7 and the satellite image, but we are seeing clearing in parts of the north bay as you see from the live camera shot in mount tam. temperatures are on the mild side at 9:00, still in the 60s. by lunchtime it still will be cloudy by the coast and at the bay, but then becoming mostly sunny for everyone this afternoon. inland temperatures in the mid 80s, around the bay mid 70s, and at the coast with that sea breeze in the mid 60s. sun sets at 8:08. should be a pleasant evening and get ready for the heat to start ramping up tomorrow. kumasi. >> thanks, frances. the fbi is investigating the suicide of disgraced finance year jeffrey epstein in a federal prison in manhattan. he was being held there pending trial on federal sex trafficking charges. he was on suicide watch since he was found last month in his cell

with bruises on his neck. he was set to stand trial next month for section sexually abusing girls as young as 14. sources say he hanged himself. congresswoman jackie spear is calling for an oversight investigation into epstein's plea deal. in a statement it reads in part, it is time for the committee on oversight and reform to conduct an investigation as to how this preferential plea deal happened in the first place. epstein's crimes were not contained to him. congress has a duty to ensure all of those who played a role in the travesty of justice answer to those crimes. the survivors of epstein's exploitation demand and deserve nothing less. the dmv's motor voter program has reportedly produced multiple errors and flaws. according to "the l.a. times" there were nearly 84,000 duplicate records and more than twice that number with political party mistakes. state officials released an audit of the program yesterday. it highlights some issues including a limited amount of

testing and inconsistent lines of communication between the state agencies involved in its creation. the dmv says it has implemented the changes proposed by that audit. in the wake of back-to-back deadly mass shootings gun control is a key focus on the campaign trail. democratic hopefuls are criticizing president trump and calling for change. abc news senior congressional correspondent mary bruce has more. >> reporter: overnight the 2020 democratic candidaes doing a round of political speed dating with iowa voters. >> hello, iowa democrats. >> reporter: making their pitches to a packed room. >> we will not defeat trump unless we have the courage to take on the powerful corporate interests. >> reporter: and taking on president trump. >> there is no national security when we don't have racial justice, let alone when we have a president who is coddling white nationalists. >> reporter: one after another the candidates sounding off against president trump's rhetoric. >> you know, donald trump offers

allppening today, this is t country's largest celebration of filipino culture in san francisco. the pistahan parade and festival is now in its 26th year. the festivities start at 11:00 this morning with the parade down market street, and then you can head over to yerba buena gardens for live entertainment, cultural exhibits, art, filipino food and, of course, a lot of filipino fun. it is free to get in and organizers expect 80,000 to attend the event in over two days. it looks like a lot of fun. i know you have been there before. >> it is a lot of fun. i even did some of the filipino dancing in college in the costume. you need a jacket today. it will be a bit breezy and on the cool side in san francisco. also, we have the low clouds over sfo causing flight arrival delays of 55 minutes. we have a warm-up starting

i'm larry beil. >> that slip and slide looked fun. what do you think, frances? >> yes, think we would enjoy some slipping and sliding, especially the early part of next week where temperatures will really warm up. that was my old alma mater, berkley. here is a look at live doppler 7, a satellite image. we have fog and low clouds at the coast. here your can see it here at the golden gate bridge, it is socked in. in fact, santa rosa has quite a bit of fog with visibility down to a mile right now. temperatures are mild around the bay. san francisco, 61. san jose, 69 degrees. half moon bay, 63. this time we are showing you a beautiful live shot from mount tam, so we have a mix of low clouds and high clouds as well. in santa rosa where we do see the fog right now, it is 59 degrees. but lots of 60s elsewhere. in fact, concord, 68. livermore, 66 degrees. in here is our forecast animation of how the clouds start to clear throughout the day. we have a system to our north

bringing us possibly some light showers near the sacramento area, north of that. but for us we are mostly drive, even though the model's picked up a few spots around the bay area. i don't think it is really going to hit the ground. by this afternoon, mostly clear except at the beaches with those high clouds passing through. mostly clear again this evening. temperatures will be on the milder side. and if you are headed to the pistahan festival today you will need a jacket. with the low clouds temperatures will stay in the 60s. the parade starts at 11:00 a.m. by this afternoon, more sunshine but with the breeze we will only warm up to 66 degrees. and then just a little cooler by 6:00 p.m. so temperatures will range from 60s at the coast to low and mid 80s inland. san francisco, 66. half moon bay, 66. that sea breeze keeps the clouds there. then we see lots of 70s around the bay. oakland, 72. san jose, 80 degrees today for the san jose jazz festival. 83 in antioch. fairfield, 84 degrees.

on the peninsula the bay area will be alive with the spirit of hawaii this weekend. check out the aloha festival in san mateo. it is a free event that celebrates polynesian culture with song and dance. there also will be arts and crafts, educational exhibits, workshops and food and drinks. admission is free but the parking costs $18. the festival runs today and tomorrow from 10:00 until 5:00 at the san mateo county event center. of course we have to check in with you because it seems there's so much going on this weekend, as always, but you have to know how to dress and plan ahead. >> and in san mateo it will be comfortable, in the low 70s. in fact, lots of comfy temps around the bay area. in the mid 70s, but still breezy and cool at the coast and in the 60s and interior areas get into the low 80s. tomorrow things start to warm up. check out monday and tuesday. we will be up by as much as 10 to 15 degrees in some areas, near triple digits for the inland areas. the heat starts to moderate wednesday and cooler for the end of the workweek. >> gosh. you have to get ready, whether

did you know that between 2017 and 2018 vaping has jumped by almost 80% among high-schoolers and by almost 50% among middle-school kids? today we're focusing the "california spotlight" on a very important topic -- the epidemic of teen vaping. joining me today to help give us more of an insight and information is dr. pam ling. thanks so much for joining us, dr. ling, and sitting down with me today. dr. ling, this is really alarming. after years of decline, teenage use of tobacco products has spiked. and in the last year, the u.s. surgeon general is saying that vaping is now a youth epidemic? >> that's right. the u.s. surgeon general has called the vaping increase an epidemic among youth and is really calling upon parents and teachers and health professionals and others who care about kids to really take action on this epidemic. >> wow. okay. so, help us understand the danger. what is an e-cigarette? what does it look like? and how are our kids getting their hands on them? >> yeah, so, e-cigarettes are

devices that heat a liquid that contains nicotine into an aerosol. and the aerosol is inhaled. so, they often contain a battery, a heat source, and then these days mostly a little pod that contains nicotine liquid. >> so, give the stats. >> well, tobacco use among youth has been going up, we think driven by the vaping epidemic. so, young people in 2018 -- about 4.9 million young people were using tobacco products, and that's up from 3.6 million in 2017. >> tell me more about the effects. >> teen brains are actually quite vulnerable to addiction because the brain is still developing until you're 25 years old. in addition to addiction, nicotine can increase other effects, like anxiety, irritability, mood swings, and learning difficulties. >> so, how did this become a youth epidemic? >> young people are really attracted to these products for a couple of reasons. first of all, the products look

cool. a lot of the new ones look like electronic devices or school supplies, so they spark curiosity. second, the products come in interesting flavors. so, four out of five teens say they started vaping because they were curious about the flavors. and then finally, the products contain a lot of nicotine. this contains the nicotine. >> how much nicotine is in that? >> this has the same nicotine as a pack of cigarettes. >> an entire pack. and how much -- how long will that last you if you're vaping? >> if you're vaping, it can last up to a day. >> okay. >> we do have some teens that use two of these a day. >> wow! >> that's like smoking two packs of cigarettes a day. so, while a teenager is just experimenting with the flavors, they may not realize they're actually being exposed to large amounts of nicotine and their brain is getting addicted. >> so, that leads me to my next question, then. why are kids at greater risk of nicotine's harm? >> yeah, well, nicotine is a neurotoxin that kind of hijacks the learning mechanisms in a teen's brain. so, every time you gain a new skill or learn a new fact --
