bay area. from abc 7. jeffrey epstein, the billionaire accused of sexually abusing young girls has been found dead in his in the federal detention center in manhattan. authorities are calling it a death by suicide. epstein was awaiting trial on charges of conspiracy and sex trafficking. he was facing 45 years if convicted. abc news reporter megan devrezian has the latest. >> reporter: the federal bureau of prisons say epstein was found unresponsive in his cell, dying from an apparent suicide. his death coming a little more than two weeks after the new york financier charged with

conspiracy and sex trafficking was found on the floor of his cell with bruises on his neck. he was temporarily placed on suicide watch after that incident. lawmakers today questioning why that status changed. william barr saying he is appalled and that the death raises serious questions that must be answers. senator ben sasse writing he should have been in a padded room under 24-hour constant surveillance. heads must roll. >> i want this investigation to continue. i don't think this suicide should be used to say this is over now, the bad guy died. i think there were other bad people involved this this. >> reporter: his alleged victims also weighing in, epstein's death comes one day after 2,000 pages of documents were unsealed in federal court,

relating to a 2015 defamation case against an epste epste epse associate. that accuser says she was directed to have sex with many powerful men, including numerous american politicians, powerful business executives, foreign presidents and other world leaders. those allegations not proven. the fbi and inspector general will now investigate the circumstances of jeffrey epstein's death. abc news, new york. congresswoman jackie speier weighed in on the apparent suicide. abc news was in redwood city where the democratic represent testify hosted a town hall titled "a conversation about america, justice for all." >> he was a despicable human being. he has spent his life being able to use money and power to not

play by the rules. and, in the end, when he was finally jailed, he didn't want to play by the rules >> spiers is one of several who have requested a hearing for victims to come forward and tell their stories. san francisco firefighters rescued a man this afternoon stuck halfway down a cliff. someone on the beach spotted two men having trouble getting up the cliff and called for help. one of the two got up on his own before rescue teams arrived. the other happen was strap nope into a harness and pulled to safety. the two men got two adventurous and ignored signs to stay away from the edge. swimmers are urged to use caution after a great white shark was spotted in the half moon bay area, it came about 1:15 about a quarter mile of pillar point harbor.

an image of the man found hiding on campus after a gun scare has been released. joshua castro was arrested after a search that lasted hours. someone reported a man had brandished a gun a few blocks from campus. the campus was put on lockdown and officers searched the spartan complex floor by floor, room by room, eventually finding him hiding in the ceiling ductwork. only on 7, the head of san francisco's school board has ofered a r offered a proposal on a mural. the mural is called life of washington and has been in place for more than 80 years. some activists want it destroyed because of how it portrays african-americans and native-americans. but community leaders have called for keeping the mural. now there's a call for covering the mural with panels. >> there had be a variety of

opinions about what should happen, but if this passes, actually destroying the art won't be on the table. our hope is that this does pass and that this board can get back to the work of making policy on behalf of every young person in the city. >> the school board could vote the mural's future on tuesday. in an effort to build a better bay area, abc news is committed to finding solutions to the challenges of buying a home. tonight we're looking at how some people are buying and living in vans. in this case, they're called glamper vans. we checked out out and liz joins us live. >> reporter: it is illegal to sleep overnight in your car in san francisco, but that isn't stopping people from doing it. a bay area company is finding that people are interested in using the slavans for more than just camping.

he started glam per van as a way to renovate upscale campers, but he's getting calls from people looking for a place to live. >> a woman is spending $5,000 for a two-bedroom apartment and she actually has all the parking spots all throughout the city worked out already, like this one's a thursda and this one's a wednesday. >> reporter: as the cost of living goes up in the bay area so does the number of people looking for alternative housing options. and with that comes the rise of a through market. upscale, livable vans. did you think of it as a housing need at first? or is that something that came after? >> i think it came after. >> reporter: inside these vans, they're outfitted with a queen sized bed, a desk, a refrigerator, and even inside here in some of them, a portable bathroom. >> a fireplace. >> reporter: what? >> oven, fridge, shower, skylight to the roof deck and got a lot of fun features.

the u.s. coast guard is sharing dramatic images of a dramatic rescue. they were boarding a fishing vessel more than 900 moiles off the mexico coast when it began to tip. the crew rescued all 25 crew members and 12 coast guardsmen. the ship eventually capsized and sank. democratic candidates are calling for tougher gun laws. trevor alt has more. >> reporter: in the wake of those deadly mass shootings in el paso and dayton, gun safety advocates coming together at a
