scene and spoke with police. prt of market street will remain closed for at least a few more hours while police search for evidence. good evening, i'm eric thomas. dion is off tonight. investigations are underway after accused sex trafficker and multi-millionaire jeffrey epstein was found dead in prison. >> reporter: jeffrey epstein's body in that van seen leaving the medical examiner's office today. abc news first to report the disgraced financier's death by hanging. staff at the metropolitan center discovering him at 6:39 this morning. they say they tried to revive him. paramedics later rushing him to the hospital where he was pronounced dead. less than three weeks ago he was put on suicide watch after being found unresponsive in his cell with marks on his neck. but abc news learning more some reason he was taken off suicide watch nearly two weeks before his death. tonight some of his accusers

like michelle say they are outraged. >> there were so many people that were looking forward to seeing him put behind bars for the rest of his life. >> reporter: and it's not only his accusers who are furious. attorney general william barr demanding an explanation. barr saying mr. epstein's death raises serious questions that must be answered. his death coming one day after thousands of pages of documents were unsealed in federal court related to a 2015 defamation case against an epstein associate ghislaine maxwell. virginia giuffre says she was an underage sex slave and directed to have, quote, sex with many powerful men, including numerous prominent american politics, powerful business executives and other world leaders. those allegations have not been proven. tonight that accuser's lawyer who represents other alleged victims writes in a statement, quote, the fact that epstein

took his own life 24 hours of the unsealing of detailed and devastating documents and exhibits in virginia giuffre's lawsuit against ghislaine maxwell is no coincidence. >> there will now be two federal investigations into jeffrey epstein's apparent suicide, one by the fbi and another by the inspector general. law enforcement sources tell abc news the criminal case against epstein will not end with his death. the fbi and the u.s. attorney's office in manhattan will continue to evaluate the evidence and hear from his accusers. prosecutors point out epstein was facing a conspiracy charge indicating that others could be indicted. the head of san francisco's school board is offering a proposal to deal with the fight over a mural that has put georgia high school in the national spotlight. tonight he's talking only to abc7. the mural is called "life

april apr washington." some want it destroyed. but some say painting over the mural is a step too far and erases history. now school board president stephon clark wants to cover the mural with panels. >> there's still going to be a variety of opinions about what should happen. but if this passes, actually destroying the art won't be on the table. our hope is that this does pass and that this board can give back to the work of making policy on behalf of every young person in the city. >> the school board could vote on the mural's future on tuesday. abc7 news reporter has been on top of this story. she tweeted today that she's been told actor danny clofr, a san francisco native is in favor of keeping the mural at the high school. he and civil rights leader amos brown are sure to announce their support. today at least 80,000 people

attended outside lands music festival at golden gate park in light of recent shootings in gilroy, el paso, and dayton, security was tight. police say they're keeping a close eye on everything, and attendees seem to notice. >> reporter: it's the 12th annual outside lands music festival. >> the music, the vibe and everything is kind of just like a good time. >> reporter: more than 210,000 people are expected to attend. childish gambino, the show is sold out. >> it's just a really fun experience to come and listen to awesome music and people watch. >> reporter: but kelly is not the only one people watching. law enforcement have eyes throughout golden gate park. >> we have a robust lineup of officers that we're working closely with the event coordinator and their security staff. >> reporter: during our time with the festival, we saw police officers on bikes, members of the s.w.a.t. team, park ranges

and even event security. even vendors notice a different in security compared to last year. >> we have people checking underneath our vehicles with mirrors. >> reporter: after the gilroy shooting where police say the suspect cut part of the fence to enter the garlic festival, sfpd say they are covering the perimeter. >> i can't speak to specifics, but the fencing is one of the lines of defense. >> reporter: restrictions and bags were also implemented this year. larger bags are prohibited. clear bags are recommended. even with all these changes, safety is still top of mind for many. >> you can't go to church. you can't go to a shopping mall. you can't go to college these days without worrying there is some sort of threat wherever there is a large populous of humz. but it's also one of those things that i can't just live my life in fear. >> reporter: in san francisco, lus pena, abc7 news. new details tonight. we are now learning a discarded

cigarette is being blamed for sparking this fire in lake county. flames have burned about 20 acres since the gulf fire broke out. cal fire tells us it's about 90% contained. at one point the fire threatened about 40 buildings. firefighters you can properly dispose of cigarettes and cigars by dowsing them in water. a great white shark was spotted in the water at the half moon bay area around 1:5. the shark was seen about a quarter mile south of pillar point harbor. the village stationers first opened its doors back in 1966. today they said good-bye. the owners of one of the last remaining mom and pop stationary stores in the bay area says they can't compete with their online competitors. abc7 news reporter has more from los altos. >> reporter: the signs at the front of the store tell the whole story. >> would you like a small bag? >> reporter: for 53 years, three

to solutions to the future. you can find all of those online at abc7news.com/bay area. you'll really notice a difference downtown near the sales force transit center. ac transit centers will resume service. it was shut down just six weeks later after workers discovered cracks in some steel beams. those beams were fixed and the center reopened july 1st. but without its main tenant ac transit. they have been using the ground floor for a couple of weeks. they will be the first agency to run buses along the dedicated bus ramp to the center's third floor. san francisco firefighters rescued a man this afternoon stuck halfway down a cliff at fort funson. someone on the beach spotted two men having trouble getting up the cliff and called for help. firefighters say one of the two got up on his own before rescue teams arrived. the other man was trapped into a harness and pulled to safety. neither were hurt. officials say the men got too

east bay communities. it's also going to feel less humid than it did today. it felt muggy. turning hotter monday and tuesday, 90s in our hottest spots. but we've fallen back into the 50s and the 60s. 63 in oakland. we're at 64 in san jose, 59 in santa rosa and brentwood right now. current temperature of 67 degrees. here's live doppler. the story we are tracking over the past 24 hours. there's this area of low pressure that was centered across northern california. brought some showers to the california/oregon border. it brought us those cooler than average temperatures today and also gave us that muggy feeling in our atmosphere. that is now pushing off to the east. it's going to bring drier air. it's also going to allow us to warm up back to where we should be for this time of the year. we have that cloud cover building along the coast. overnight lows mainly in the mid- and upper 50s. your starting temperatures tomorrow morning. the day planner on your sunday. sun up here at 6:# 2 in the

trafficking and molesting underage girls. he had recently been removed from a suicide watch. two days down, one to go. san francisco's outside lands music festival has attracted tens of thousands of people to golden gate park. this follows recent mass shootings including the one with the gilroy garlic festival. democratic presidential candidates are calling for tougher gun laws in the wake of two mass shootings. 31 people were killed. dozens more injured last weekend on the heels of that shooting in gilroy that left three people dead. abc news reporter trevor alt has more. >> reporter: in the wake of those deadly mass shootings in el paso and dayton, gun safety advocates coming together. >> activists like you are seeing to it that these issues will not be ignored in this presidential election. >> reporter: america is with us andmosefety. >> reporter: 18 candidates

mcconnell in the senate and to every politician out there to stand up against the nra. >> reporter: in washington new signs republican leadership may be reconsidering long health stances on gun control. >> background checks and red flags will probably lead the discussion. those are two items that for sure will be front and center. >> reporter: the house passed two background check bills back in february, but so far mcconnell has refused to bring them up for a vote. trevor alt, abc news. lady gaga is pitching in to help the communities of gilroy, el paso and taton. she posted on facebook yesterday that her "born this way" foundation will fully fund 162 classroom projects in the cities. out of those projects 23 are for classrooms in gilroy. she says she identified the projects in partnership with donors choose a site where teachers support classroom project requests that donors can help out.

the gilroy foundation has established a special fund. we have a link on our website at abc7news.com. amid the current gun violence debate, universal pictures has canceled the release of its movie "the hunt." the thriller is about people who hunt other people for sport. it was set to open in theaters september 27th. in a statement today universal said in part, quote, we understand that now is not the right time to release this film. the studio did not say if that decision was directly related to the recent mass shootings. paradise unified school district is back nearly a year after the camp fire destroyed or damaged many of its school sites. nearly 100 people showed up to celebrate the re-opening of the district's offices. officials say as students pepare to head back to the classroom, they are looking at different ways to help them cope with memories of last year's devastation. >> it's fantastic to know that we can go ahead and accomplish all these things that we've been trying to do so our kids can learn here in their own schools.

marine lacquer. it measures how much moisture is in the atmosphere. and when those numbers hover around 60 degrees even exceeding that like it is in san jose, that's when it feels muggy out there. we will see drier air move in tomorrow. tonight we'll see temperatures in the mid- and upper 50s under cloudy skies along the coast and patchy fog, around the bay shoreline. so we'll timeout that fog. tomorrow morning first thing, you can see it's centered across san francisco through oakland. then it quickly pulls back to the coast, much quicker than it did today. so by 10:00 in the morning we're seeing a lot of sunshine across the region. drier air. it'll feel less humid out there tomorrow. 91 in concord and 85 in santa rosa. plan on the next seven days on it being sunny and less humid. summer is back in a big way, especially inland in the upper 90s before cooler weather and breezier conditions move in by thursday and friday.
