there outside the jail with new details. good morning, tom. >> reporter: robin, good morning urces at theeptment of justice tell us right now the focus of investigators is on the 24 hours leading up to epstein's suicide, that attorney general william barr wants to be updated every three hours on any developments and there are numerous agents working on this case. this morning, abc news is learning new details about the security breakdown surrounding accused sex trafficker jeffrey epstein's apparent suicide inside of a manhattan jail cell. his death by hanging now being investigated by the fbi and the inspector general. a source telling abc news the metropolitan correctional center has been understaffed, leading to low morale among guards. another source tells us that the two guards in the special housing unit where epstein was being held were both on overtime. one of the guards on his fifth overtime shift of the week, and

that those guards were supposed to check on epstein every 30 minutes, but did not in the hours before he was discovered saturday morning. attorney bruce barkett represtsps fmemate who rood wit epstein was found unresponsive with marks on his neck. at the time epstein was put on suicide watch, but only for six days. >> one has to wonder how it is that this man who just tried to take his own life by hanging himself a few weeks ago was in a position to successfully hang himself. >> reporter: epstein's death coming less than 24 hours after 2,000 pages of new court documents, including depositions and police reports, were made public. >> you're screaming on the inside, and you don't know how to let it come out. all you do is obey. that's it. >> reporter: in those unsealed documents, virginia roberts guiffre's 2015 defamation suit against ghislaine maxwell, a british socialite and longtime epstein associate who epstein's accusers described as his madam. in deposition testimony she says

that maxwell recruited her to be a teenage sex slave to epstein and that epstein directed her to have sex with powerful men including former new mexico governor bill richardson, former maine senator george mitchell and prince andrew. all of the men deny those allegations. >> give jeffrey what he wants. a lot of this training came from ghislane herself. >> reporter: maxwell has consistently denied the allegations and so far has not been charged but prosecutors pledging to take down anyone who conspired with epstein to commit his years of alleged sexual assault on underaged girls. and epstein still able to torment some of his accusers even in death. >> i really wanted justice. i really wanted him to take up for what he did and to be put in jail or prison and have to sit there and think about what it is he exactly did to so many people. >> reporter: now, following epstein's suicide, president

trump retweeted two conspiracy theories that were completely baseless, suggesting bill clinton was somehow behind the suicide because he had a past association with epstein. again, no proof, completely baseless. we should also mention that president trump himself had a past relationship with jeffrey epstein. both presidents say they knew nothing about these terrible crimes. david? >> tom llamas covering this all weekend long, thanks. let's bring in our chief legal analyst dan abrams this morning. we know the department of justice as tom just reported is looking into this. they're getting updates every three hours or so. but what do you make of what could happen for somebody in the jail or administrators inside the jail? >> heads are going to roll in one way or another. the question is going to be, is it going to be administrative, is it going to be people getting fired or are there going to be charges? for there to be criminal charges you're going to need intentional acts, not just negligence, not just they should have done something more, but it's going to have to have been literally a bribe or a payoff or someone instructing someone to do something else.

so something intentional for criminal charges. >> people really scratching their heads this weekend when they heard this headline because this is a guy who tried to kill himself a couple weeks ago, supposed to be on suicide watch. how does this happen? >> in a place where it should never happen. that's the point. it should never happen in this particular jail. there are going to be questions. the problem is there's no evidence at this point to support any of the theories about some very well connected person ordering epstein to be killed. and so that puts you back to the more likely scenarios which is some combination of negligence with good luck on the part of epstein. now, is it possible that he engaged in some activity? did he pay someone off? we'll see. there's again nothing to indicate that happened, but if it wasn't just negligence, unfortunately for a lot of people who want answers, that may be the next most likely answer. >> in the meantime everyone's got a theory on what really happened. >> yeah. >> what about the prosecution? they say the prosecution continues, prosecutors will move

forward on this and his associates who tom reported on there, they shouldn't be breathing a sigh of relief yet. >> absolutely not. the southern district of new york has made it clear they're continuing to investigate a conspiracy. number two, there were employees mentioned in the epstein indictment. there were three employees mentioned there. they can all be investigated. then you also have the possibility of civil lawsuits as well. so i don't think anyone is breathing a sigh of relief in particular because people want accountability and if epstein's not around to get it, someone else may have to. >> dan abrams, great to have you this morning. thanks. robin, michael? >> all right. thank you, david. now to a scare at a mall in houston sending panicked crowds running into the streets. people are especially on edge in the wake of those mass shootings last week and linsey davis is here with more. police are searching for the suspect who caused this. >> that's right. they certainly are. good morning to you, michael. houston police say this time the suspect has not been located, but they have numerous witnesses

the recent mass shootings in el paso and dayton committing their own acts of terror. late last week 20-year-old was arrested at a walmart after entering the store wearing a military style rifle and body armor. police say he wanted to test the boundaries of his second amendment rights. police say a 16-year-old boy and his mother both suffered minor injuries in that mall scare. the mother was reportedly stepped on several times on her back as she was trying to help her son. authorities say the suspect is described as a white male in his teens or early 20s. >> creates a dangerous situation all the way around. >> for sure. so many people being nervous when they hear this noise. first they thought it was gunfire, then fireworks. really scary. >> a lot of people on edge. >> yep. now we have a new severe weather threat. the midwest to northeast bracing for possible twisters and flash flooding while the south faces triple digit heat. ginger of course tracking the latest. good morning, ginger. >> good morning, robin. there were ten reported tornadoes, more than 180 severe

missile program. the explosion happened at a missile test site off the coast of russia on thursday. the government initially saying there had been no change in radiation levels but now local officials saying levels had briefly spiked. residents nearby reportedly stocking up on iodine, which is used to reduce the effects of radiation. officials are saying a small rea reactor had exploded during a training session. it's suspected this was part of a program to develop a new nuclear powered missile that russian president putin has claimed is able to reach anywhere in the world. russia of course, has a history of see kre secrecy over accidents of course including chernobyl in 1986. david? >> thanks to you. to an attack at a mosque in norway being investigated as an act of terror. a gunman opening fire leaving one person injured before the shooter was taken down. officials say the suspect may have been motivated by extremist anti-immigrant views and james longman has the latest for us. good morning, james. >> reporter: good morning, robin. yeah. that shooting at a norway mosque is being investigated as an attempted terror attack.

a gunman opened re afternoon inside the center right outside the capital of oslo. he was brought down by a or shipper worshipper, a very brave man indeed. police describe the suspect as a white norwegian citizen, 20 years old. he's now in custody. the investigation so far has uncovered he expressed extreme right wing views and hostile attitudes toward immigrants. when authorities visited his home, they found his 17-year-old step-sister dead. police are also charging him with her murder. david? >> james longman, thank you. to this massive protests in hong kong bringing one of the busiest airports to a standstill this morning. outbound flights canceled after thousands of demonstrators swarming the main terminal. this comes after a week of violent clashes. hong kong police are defending their use of force including g station and firing pepper spray pellets at close range. look at these images, extremely tense situation and we'll follow it throughout the day here.

this morning, an alarming incident involving a tesla, this time on a packed highway in russia. a tesla model 3 electric car became engulfed in flames after it crashed into a parked tow truck along the highway at more than 60 miles per hour. this video which aired on russian state tv shows just moments after the crash when the tesla erupts. the driver of the car reportedly said he was using driver assistance holding the steering wheel and says he did not see the truck. the driver escaped before the flames erupted along with his two children who were rushed to the hospital, grateful to be alive. the vehicle was reportedly in auto pilot mode which is not a self-driving system and requires driver supervision.

it's touted by tesla as an advanced driver assistance system that enhances safety and convenience behind the wheel. questions remain about the general safety of automation in vehicles. earlier this month tesla was hit with a lawsuit after a 50-year-old man died allegedly after his model x crashed into an off-ramp divider at nearly 70 miles an hour. autopilot had been turned on ten seconds before that crash, according to the ntsb. and in december, an ow that his tesla model s caught fire twice in one day, six hours apart, in northern california. no one was injured in that incident. tesla says they investigated. this, however, was a battery issue, not an automation issue. now, we reached out to tesla. they are not commenting but in regards to that fatal incident, they say that drivers supported by autopilot are safer than those operating without assistance. in this instance, the metal frame is all that remains of this vehicle.

sending letters like this, "i watch and i wait for the day the young blood will be mine again," and "i pass by many times a day and you know i'll be watching." >> i've lived here my whole life. yeah, it was a pretty big shocker. >> reporter: five years later, the family selling the property they've never lived in, that has haunted them for years, taking a loss, selling it for $400,000 less than they paid for it. we spoke with their attorney in the midst of their ordeal. >> it's a great house. this is a total tragedy and nightmare for my climates. >> reporter: the watcher's letters describing anger about renovations to the home and detailing the movements of the family and their kids. one letter saying, all of the windows and doors allow me to watch you and track you as you move through the house. >> from day one they've been trying to solve this case, they linguist to look at the letters and see we any any patterns. they scoured the internet looking for clues. >> reporter: but despite years of investigations and while authorities did discover some

back now on a monday morning with that frightening incident at the beach. a 13-year-old hit by a flying umbrella in massachusetts, struck in the arm. will reeve is at rockaway beach right here in new york with the story. will, i know you've got a warning from experts on how to keep us safe. hey, will. >> reporter: hey, david. this incident is just the latest in a series of thousands according to one consumer group. it sounds surreal, umbrellas turning into flying projectiles, but the reality exists on any beach on any day but there are simple ways you can stay prepared and safe.

>> they need somebody to go to good harbor beach. we have somebody impaled with an umbrella. >> reporter: this morning a 13-year-old boy is recovering after being pierced in the arm by a flying umbrella at a massachusetts beach. >> impaled by a flying umbrella. sounds like an injury to the left arm. >> the kid was just walking along and all of a sudden the umbrella just stabbed him. >> reporter: witnesses say he immediately fell to the ground. bystanders including a nurse who happened to be nearby rushing to his side to stop the bleeding. >> i was trying to talk to the kid and someone was tying a tourniquet and a couple people were trying to call the paramedics. >> he was, like, just yelling how it hurt. >> reporter: emergency response teams racing him to the hospital. >> when we heard it come over the radio, it was -- we kind of did a double take. >> reporter: according to the u.s. consumer product safety commission, improperly installed beach umbrellas have sent more than 30,000 people to hospitals across the u.s. over the last decade. >> no one's calling for a ban on beach umbrellas, but something is wrong when any consumer

product can so easily take off and kill someone. >> reporter: there's more and more footage of umbrellas wreaking havoc like this close call earlier this year, a gust of wind launching an umbrella into the air, narrowly missing a toddler. in 2015 a bystander capturing this wild scene, winds whipping umbrellas across a maryland beach. last summer in new jersey a 67-year-old woman was pierced in the ankle by a flying umbrella. >> could we have fire to the eesothg sayshe w strk a hecked it raight up in the air and shot it right back down and it went right into my thigh. >> reporter: experts say the problem starts when beachgoers don't properly secure their umbrellas. by the time they realize something's wrong, it's too late. to truly secure an umbrella in the sand, experts say it needs to be buried a minimum of 16 inches down. >> you can either use a shovel to dig the hole deep enough to set the stake and set it in, or

once you drive the stake into the sand, rock it back and forth. that typically gets it deeper into the sand. >> reporter: the massachusetts teen was released from the hospital but these events have been fatal in the past. there are many ways to secure your umbrella. there are sand bags. there are umbrellas that actually have bags built into them. there 16 inches is the minimum depth of your hole. so we dug one of those holes. we're going to measure it out. that's a good 16 inches in there. then you've got your umbrella. you cover it up with the sand and you enjoy a day at the beach. personally on a day like today, i'd keep the umbrella down and get that tan, guys. >> yeah, that's you, will. thank you. i was telling you guys that years ago in florida -- you think it's secure and the wind shifted directions and the umbrella went up. >> fast. >> it happens like that. it happens like that. >> be safe out there. >> 16 inches is a lot to dig. >> it is. >> the bag was a good idea too i thought. >> better to be safe than sorry. >> absolutely. >> i don't think will's coming back.

ago epstein was put on a suicide watch list. now, that's the question that attorney general william barr wants answered. he's launched two investigations into this matter. so right now investigators are working around the clock to figure out exactly how this happened. now, we can't forget the accusers here. they had hoped and waited for so long that jeffrey epstein would finally see justice, that they would see justice, that they would see him behind bars. you can argue he's now tormenting them in his death. many of them outraged over all of this but there may be hope. prosecutors say they are looking into the conspiracy aspect because a lot of these accusers say there was a network around jeffrey epstein that helped him commit these crimes. prosecutors may go after those co-conspirators in the future. we'll have to wait and see on that. right after epstein died on that saturday, president trump retweeting conspiracy theories linking bill clinton to the attempted suicide because clinton had a past relationship with epstein. again, completely baseless, no proof. we should also mention president trump himself had a past association with epstein.

when we were in the hospital and just holding him and just, like, i can't believe that actually just happened. >> what is the overriding thought inside of you to keep you focused and centered and calm? >> i think it was just like i can do this, you know. it was like -- like i said, it was a surrendering like i can do this, i can do this. >> reporter: their story is one that gives hope because like so many couples their journey includes a miscarriage. >> i think it just makes you so thankful when your baby is okay. you know, that's what was so scary. >> mm-hmm. >> and to hear that first cry. the paramedics were great. they let me put him on my chest and do skin to skin and everything that i wanted as a mother. i received so many messages from other women and men and just that there is hope. >> one more question for you. do you have any advice for any of the contestants on "bachelor in paradise" moving forward? because you did find love, instant chemistry, and had

success and now you have a growing family. so what would you tell them? >> make sure you pick the right one because life comes at you fast. luckily i did. we turn to new hope this morning for the 10 million people living with parkinson's disease around the world. science is making major new advances to treat and make living with the disease at least a it great news, but first, take a look at this. >> reporter: this morning, researchers are closer than ever to treatments that may some day stop the progression of parkinson's disease. that next generation of treatments on the horizon, new technologies, gene therapy, stem cell transplants, even service dogs. >> patients are living longer. we have better treatments now than we ever did before to treat them. >> reporter: all these advancements bringing hope to people like 40-year-old aother oo. >> i was 32 when i started getting a tiny twitch in my finger. i thought it was kind of weird. then it progressed more into my hand. >> reporter: she spent her career as an e.r. nurse and was devastated when she was

diagnosed with early onset parkinson's at just 34. >> i was like, i'm not going to be able to be a nurse. i worked so hard to get there and now i can't get there. >> reporter: but she stayed at her job two more years with help from supportive co-workers until simple tasks like writing became difficult for her. dicati i literally can't even get dressed. i can't even wash my hair by myself. i can barely pull up my pants. >> it's an unpredictable roller coaster. patients with parkinson's have a lot of difficulty with regular daily tasks that you and i don't really think of including turning on a light switch or shutting a door or being able to open up a jar. >> reporter: through it all, staying positive, finding a new job as a lactation consultant and keeping her spirits high. >> the key right now is living well with parkinson's disease. we know so much more about the life-style measures, particularly the exercise aspects, overall wellness and well-being and the socialization aspects. >> wow, she's a champion. >> yes, she is. >> dr. jen ashton is with us here now and you're really encouraged by all this. >> there's a lot of exciting research going on right now in

the treatment of neurodegenerative diseases. there's gene therapy, dietary therapy when you talk about parkinson's. there's work being done on the space station because of the microgravity environment. will that off some clues to the proteins that cause parkinson's? they're even investigating service pet therapy so it's an exciting time, a lot of options for people living with this condition. >> speaking of the later, service dogs joining us now is jeannette from 4e kennels. what do you look for in choosing a service dog? >> i carefully evaluate our puppies looking for those that show an aptitude to service dog work, puppies that display traits lieks confidence, determination, perseverance and the ability to work for and with their human. when we identify these puppies, they're matched with a special

i love that you're doing that. the magic ingredient is soy sauce. >> that's all you added to the ground beef? >> that's all i added. i see you got hungry there. for something unusual we're doing buns that are made out of the eggplant we got. >> you're making a -- i was wondering how you're going to make a bun out of eggplant. >> this was surprising because we didn't have buns from the people we bought things from. here she is getting so inventive. >> i know you have tomatoes and scallions. >> usually you put them up top. you're doing something a little different. >> i'm doing a scallion gem, a mix of caramelized onions, ketchup, brown sugar and vinegar and you get this delicious -- you can see you've got your burger, eggplant bun. you've got to cook the eggplant through in the same pan where you cooked the meat and put this sort of salsa on top. >> ginger is ahead. curve here.

she's already eating. >> then it's kind of like a ketchup and caramelized -- >> chutney. >> ginger, were you surprised you were able to cook for a family of four for 23 bucks? >> incredibly surprised because that is not how i shop usually. you showed me so many things. we took the food that day because this is different food obviously, took the food and cooked ourselves and made a beautiful meal but it was nothing like this so there's so many things you can do with the same ingredients. teachable moment for me. >> when you have the beef and then you have pasta, we're just doing onions with -- >> this is another meal for just 23 bucks. >> from the same stuff we bought. all these mushrooms in here, a little marsala. >> let me do my part here. >> drop that in, the marsala with the onions. >> it's all about the way you drizzle. >> next time you're coming to the supermarket with us. >> i have to say we had money left over but we also got enough

for the two full meals. i can't emphasize enough that right here we are making a second meal with the same stuff that we got. >> pasta is the most versatile thing that you can get. >> you can do anything. people never say, oh, we're having pasta for dinner? they say i'm so excited, we're carbing out. >> my kids is saying, please, more pasta. >> so if you think about it, it didn't have carbs, the eggplant burger, more unusual. then we go homey with the pasta and mushrooms and it's kind of meaty and you can throw in the leftover burgers and pasta and everybody thinks you have all these great meals. >> if it's meatless monday, you're set. if it's not, you're set >> i know we are all talking about it but i see a plate over there. thank you. >> this is all part of the idea that when you go to the supermarket there's always a story that you tell and your groceries tell a story. >> and we found a woman with chickens. she has chickens and she was making -- >> quiches. >> she had tons of mushrooms that we bought off her. >> this is delicious. oh man, alex, thank you.
