that hot summer doesn't want to go away. >> it's getting hotter. normally it would be a good thing. in this case, not so much. hopefully people bought new clothes that are summerish. mother nature saying you may be going back to school, but i'm keeping summer around. heat risk, the orange is the bayshore, the coast and san francisco. that's where we have a heat advisory, starts at 11:00 and goes through 8:00 tomorrow evening. temperatures 95 to 105. solano and lake counties. that's an excessive heat warning that goes all the way, starts at te same time but goes through 10:00 friday. 100 to 110 degree temperatures possible. the sun has started to come up. 76 in the east bay hills. if you live in the valley, that's where it's coolest. mid 50s to mid 60s. in the hills, in the 70s already. noon we're already looking for ac. 82 to 94 away from the coast. alarmingly hot at 4:00.

90 to 102 away from the coast. here is frances. >> hi, mike. we have problems on several bridges that have been reported. one is westbound across the bay bridge as you head towards treasure island. you can see brake lights there on the incline section. that means things will back up at the bay bridge toll plaza as they start to slow down the metering lights. already backed up to the foot of the maze. also, a couple of problems on the other bridges. westbound 92, san mateo bridge, a crash reported near the toll plaza as well as westbound 84 on the dumbarton bridge, another accident reported blocking a lane. as we check out the drive times, it's still not horrible. westbound across the bay bridge, 11 minutes. 14 minutes across the san mateo bridge. of course, if you want to avoid all that, you may want to consider that. bart, no problems, a.c.e. train is running nine minutes late. it's back to school for gilroy unified school district two weeks after the shooting at

the garlic festival. >> the high school is right next to christmas hill park where three people, including two children, were shot and killed. abc 7 news reporter jobina fortson is live at the high school this morning with how that school is preparing for today. jobina. >> reporter: natasha and reggie. there's hope there will be a sense of healing in numbers at the start of the school year and also with the students get back with their friends and teachers, that that will allow for some sense of normal see as well. we're back in the classrooms on monday, specifically undergoing training on how to respond to children who may be upset by the garlic festival shooting. extra police will be on hand as the extra precaution. two additional counselors will be at its 15 schools today. the additional counseling services will be available throughout the week. >> once you're around all the people you love, you're distracted by what happened.

easier to move forward. >> the routine, it getsetsets back to normalcy. >> reporter: three people including a 13-year-old girl and 6-year-old boy were killed and at least a dozen others were hurt. live in gilroy this morning, jobina fortson, abc 7 news. in the east bay there was a show of support for the victims of our nation's recent mass shootings along with a call to action. congresswoman barbara lee led a night of healing at frank oh gag wah plaza. it mobilized people to stand up against white supremacy and gun violence. lee said when it comes to gun violence, they need to do more than just pass a bill for stronger background checks. >> we must also ban assault weapons and get these weapons of war off the streets of america! >> the rally was also an opportunity for people to stand

in solidarity with gilroy, el paso and dayton. developing news out of hong kong. flights have resumed at the city's airport following two days of chaos. you can see protest rs clash with police dressed in riot gear. the violence forced the cancellation of hundreds of flights. th the protest has grown into a pro democracy campaign. a live look at sfo, flights from san francisco to hong kong have departed on time this morning. president trump says he hopes the conflict in hong kong is resolved peacefully. he remains focused on trade talks with china. the president is delaying new tariffs on chinese goods. a 10% import tax was supposed to take effect next month. that has since been postponed until december. a terrifying situation for one woman in san francisco. she was attacked as she tried to get into her home. in this stunning video, you can

see she's trying to get through the front door of her building when a man believed to be homeless, grabs her, pulls her away from the door and onto the ground. she struggles to get away but eventually is able to crawl inside. >> this should never happen to anyone anywhere. i was trying to get into my own house. >> she says it took officers 30 minutes from the time of the first call. we asked sfpd. they say it was a lower priority because it was reported as a man standing outside. when things escalated they got an officer to her house in three minutes and the suspect was arrested. the building is right next to the embarcadero navigation center. she's concerned things might be worse when that is built. police say when the center opens there will be additional security measures in place. the group safe embarcadero for all is suing san francisco to block it. it is 6:05. vallejo police are asking for help identifying a man suspected

of having inappropriate contact with three young girls. this is surveillance video of the suspect. investigators say the victims are between 8 and 14 years old. on two occasions police say the suspect was chased away by the girls' guardians. in the north bay, petaluma police are trying to identify this man who robbed prescription medication from the cvs pharmacy on north mcdowell boulevard. last night investigators say he presented a note demanding the medication warning that no one would be hurt if the clerk complied. the clerk did give the man the medication and he left. he's described as a white man between 30 and 40 years old, six feet tall, weighing about 300 pounds and has a goatee. the jury is still out in the ghost ship trial. it may take jurors a few more days before they reach a decision. they sent a note to the judge . that request includes hearing derick almena's testimony word for word. the attorney for co-defendant

max harris says that may be good news for his client. >> it's no surprise to us that a majority of the questions and attention is focused on mr. almena. we've been saying the entire time max harris is innocent, should never have been prosecuted. now we're seeing deliberations that reflect more attention on mr. almena. that's consistent with what we thought all along. >> each man faces 36 counts of manslaughter for the deadly fire in 2016. all evacuation orders and warns have been lifted for this wildfire in mendocino county. the moose fire is burning about 45 miles of santa rosa. at last check it burned 225 acres. containment is at 35%. the cause is under investigation. new at 6:00, could iconic san francisco band timbuk2 be leaving the area? the adrenaline kicked in and off i went. >> this man chases a thief down in the street trying to get his stolen phones back. what he kept yelling over and

westbound 80 headed towards the cordelia junction. here is a live shot of the golden gate bridge where it's light, no problems out of the north bay at this point. and an accident has been reported at the san mateo bridge toll plaza. so once you get past the toll plaza, it's looking good here on the westbound side, on the right-hand side. traffic is slow westbound 92 out of hayward to the tolls. there was also a crash reported at the dumbarton bridge toll plaza. so far no major slowing there. here is a live shot heading to the richmond-san rafael bridge. westbound 580 backed up as you approach the tolls. across the span it's eight minutes. across the san mateo bridge, 17 minutes. across the dumbarton bridge, ten minutes at this point. the bay bridge toll plaza is backed up as well to the foot of the maesz with an earlier accident on the upper deck. san francisco-based timbuk2 may be moving to southern california. hate to hear this. the "san francisco business times" reports the bag maker has been sold to a custom furniture

cell phone theft, one of the biggest crimes in san francisco. a man decided he was not going to be the next victim. >> they don't recommend this. not one, but two of his cell phones were stolen. he went after that thief. mike huckman was in the city for business. yesterday morning he was grabbing a cup of coffee when someone snatched his phones and jetted off with him. he chased down the thief three blocks, yelling that the phones were locked, it's going to be useless to you. something must have registered. eventually the thief did something unexpected. >> i see him dart off that way and i can't see him anymore. then i peek around the bend here and i find the phones just like that. that's exactly how i found them. >> well, san francisco police say this is never a good idea. do not confront the suspect

because things could escalate very quickly. he's just glad things worked out in this case. he says he provided the opportunity for it to get stolen in the first place and learned his lesson. >> i hope the rest of his trip is all right. a revelation by former heavyweight champ mike tyson about marijuana use. legendary partner say he and his business partner smoke $40,000 worth of pot at home at his california marijuana ranch. the 53-year-old talked about it on his podcast saying they smoke about ten tons of weed a month. he says he plans to open a pot resort in thor in future in the palm springs area. it will reportedly include an indoor water park, sports arena and the world's largest and laziest river. >> uh-huh. >> that is funny. that is so unlike him. >> he's mellowed out. >> right, from being an

it appears the vehicle went through a fence and smashed into a minutes san jose police confirmed that someone died. officers shut down tully road in both directions from monterey to south 7th street. dozens of local school districts are back in tsession this morning. >> abc 7 news reporter amy hollyfield is live in the east bay. good morning, amy. >> reporter: good morning. we're at foothill middle school in walnut creek, one of many schools heading back to work. kids want to think hard about the first day of school outfit. a day for tank tops and shorts i'm afraid. some kids might not be that well rested. look at the temperatures overnight. this was in concord. tough to sleep if you don't have air conditioning. at least in most schools, there's air conditioning. for those at home, in the heat today, cooling stations are open in cities across the bay area.

different times, like no, it's not locked. my mind couldn't process it was actually happening. >> luckily in this case, the child was okay. so far this year 32 children have died in hot cars. that's according to kidsandcars.org. if you need to get out of the heat, several bay areas are opening cooling centers. find the closest to you by going to abc7news.com. the san francisco board of education has reversed course on this controversial mural at washington high school. last night the school board narrowly voted in favor of covering the mural with panels instead of painting over it which the school board previously voted to do in june. the compromise left both sides disappointed. >> it's being kofrtd, but when is the next time that they're going to uncover it? >> if they're that upset about images, about names, why don't they consider changing the name of the school.

the 13 frescoes painted in the '30s were meant to show george washington in a critical life as a slave owner and leader of a nation that killed native americans. a u. smt bankruptcy judge will consider a civil trial benz pg&e for the tubbs fire. the press democrat reports people in the county want to contest cal fire's findings that private power equipment is what sparked the tubbs fire, not pg&e. they believe state investigators disregarded key evidence. 6:36. developing news in the death of jeffrey epstein. "the new york times" reports that two guards who were supposed to be checking in on him fell asleep and then falsifi falsified records to cover up their mistake. the jail reassigned the warden and has suspended the two guards. surveillance video in the special unit where epstein was held shows the guards did not

check on him for about three hours. they were supposed to do it every 30 min nchts new details in the mass shooting in dayton. surveillance video shows the gunman left the bar, went to his car and changed clothes. you see him carrying a backpack. he ducks into an alley and puts on body armor. moments later he's merges and opens fire. investigators say the video indicates he acted alone. 26 people were shot in just 32 seconds and that includes his sister who is among the nine killed. investigators say it's not clear if he intentionally shot his sister. in tooeb, hayward police say a man shot by officers was carrying a replica weapon. officers responded to calls of a man waving a gun. two officers confronted the man in his 20s and opened fire. police haven't said if he threatened the officers. the investigation closed the intersection of mission boulevard and val vista for several hours. in the south bay santa clara county getting a new voting system for the 2020 elections.

cooler school district goings bang. 56 this morning, the biggest spread, look at that, 4 the degrees warmer. 98 at 3:00. then we head over towards gilroy, heading back to school. 62 this morning, but a very dangerous 101 this afternoon and even warmer in pittsburg unified school district. 72 this morning. this is one of the areas that will be in the 70s the next couple mornings. look where you end up. 103 during the afternoon hours. as amy was talking about, maybe this is as good a time to drive your kid to school if you can. have them take an umbrella to shelter them from the sunshine, that will make them feel 10 to 15 degrees warmer. make sure to dress them properly. counselors on hand as stuns return to classes in gilroy. it comes just two and a half weeks after a gunman killed three people at the garlic festival. >> gilroy high school is right next to christmas hill park where it all happened.

abc 7's jobina fortson is live at the school this morning. good morning, jobina. >> reporter: good morning, natasha and reggie. be going to see students enter the building here. faculty and staff are prepared for them to be asking questions and also some to maybe be upset. there will be two extra counselors at all 15 of the district schools. there will be extra officers at the school as well just as a precautionary measure. staff members were back in the classroom on monday preparing for their students' return and specifically received training on how to respond to children who may be upset by the garlic festival shooting. three people including a 13-year-old girl and 6-year-old boy were killed. at least a dozen others were hurt in the rampage. there's going to be questions, there's going to be tears, a lot of expression of sorrow. we're preparing our staff as much as we can for dealing with students while at the same time dealing with their own emotions.

traffic is slow northbound 87 approaching the scene. not too far away, a fatal accident has tully road closed between monterey road and 7th street as the investigation continues. detours are in place. that middle bar, southbound 680 slow dublin to mission boulevard south. that's 22 minutes because of an earlier crash. the ride westbound 80 highway 4 to the maze also had an accident near the san pablo area. that's 36 minutes. westbound across the bay bridge, 14 minutes. that's because we had an earlier accident and a stall. here is a live shot. you can see traffic is backed up right now through the maze. we're also seeing lots of slowing westbound heading towards the san mateo bridge across the toll plaza because ibigger, tastier strips spicy chof juicy chickenbo. with crunchy batter.
