the body from heat exhaustion to heat stroke. it's for that fact the weather service issued a heat advisory for much of the entire bay area. this lasts till 8:00 tomorrow. areas in orange triple digits. lake county and solano county, the hottiest temperatures will be recell over 100 degrees. it's important to know the difference between heat stroke and exhaustion. exhaustion, move insided to ac and drink cool water. when your body stops sweat, that is dangerous. that is heat stroke. call 911 immediately. that means your body has a high temperature and is shutting down under those conditions. also look before you lock. never leave children inside cars because in just 30 minutes with temperatures in the mid-90s, the inside of your car can be 130

having school till monday because the air isn't working yet. >> jose flores missed his message and brought his kids to school anyway. >> i walked in and the teacher let us know personally that the ac was not working. > pittsburg unified superintendent sent out an e mail to parents yesterday saying "i'm hoping we can start school on monday but i cannot give you a firm date till we have confidence that the work is completes and the air is functioning." pittsburgh unified is spending $1.9 million to update the air conditioning. dr. schultz promises to keep parents infoed miserable it was by looking at people working outside like these landscapers. we got complaints about the heat on b.a.r.t. cars during the morning rush. >> very hot. i had to take this off. the ac never works. >> reporter: but other people we talked to didn't seem to have a problem with the temperature on the b.a.r.t. cars themselves.

so we decided to do a little experiment. we got our own handheld thermometer and i took a ride on the b.a.r.t. trains. coming up at 6:00, i'll tell you what i found. let me say it this way. temperature difference is pretty vast between being in a crowd t. car during rush hour and a fairly empty b.a.r.t. car midmorning. >> live in walnut creek, eric thomas, abc7 news. spilly heat. that happened in the south bay. >> this is a mess. several lanes of southbound 101 north of shoreline boulevard were closed after a sanitation truck turned over on the center divide. chris nguyen live with the details there. chris? >> reporter: larry, traffic has been an absolute mess on the 101 the entire afternoon. we are just south of san antonio road sheer the palo alto tote mountain view border. you can see caltrans crews right

now working to clean up the mess, the southbound side where three lanes are currently closed. let's show you rid video from earlier. the chp telling us a sanitation truck was traveling northbound on 101 when a black sedan trying to exit at san antonio road cut the truck off. truck veered right, hit the barriers on the right shoulder losing control and veered across all the lanes. it struck a white sedan, hit the center median and overturned landing on the center divide.k gallons of human waste. the chp telling us a small portion ended up on the roadway. as we looking from sky 7, the traffic has been building up throughout the afternoon. the chp reopening the northbound lanes and said it's it's absolutely miracle no one was hurt in this incident. it is unclear how long it will take for the southbound lanes to reopen to track but back here live, your alternate routes are

85 and 280. instead of taking 101. as for that black sedan, the chp telling me they have not been able to be locate the driver and asking the public to step forward if they have any rmatn . a chp motorcycle officer suffered major injuries in a collision near the bay bridge that ended crippling the morning commute. a driver interviewed into the hov lane just past the fellow toll plaza and lit the officer. the crash closes the two carpool lanes for several hours. the officer was taken to a local hospital and expected to survive. the driver has been identified as 23-year-old melik lockhart of brentwood. he was not charged for anything involve oth accident but arrested for a weapon violation because of a gun he had with him. >> developing news now in philadelphia. several police officers have been hurt amid an ongoing standoff with a man barricaded

inside a home. the scene from overhead, massive police presence there. officers appear to be rushing one person to a patrol car. at least six officers were struck by gunfire. their current conditions unknown. two sources also tell abc news this all started during a narcotics operation. >> dozens of inmates injured today in a riot at the correctional training facility in soledad. the riot involved around 200 inmates on the yord yard. it ended shortly after guards fired warning shots. eight inmates were taken to outside hospitals. 50 treated at the prison for minor injuries. >> counselors were on hand today as classes resume in gilroy 2 1/2 weeks after a gunman killed three people at the garlic festival. >> stephen romero, caila sal la dar, trevor irbe were all killed. jobina fortson was at the high

school this monk. >> reporter: the first day of school is often filled with excitement and nervous jitters. in this case, it's a day where you'll find foopd additional security and counselors. >> we've been preparing for today since the shooting. >> reporter: gilroy was already a close knit community but now bond by tragedy. just over two weeks ago, a gunman opened fire at the gilroy garlic festival killing three including a 6 and 13-year-old and injuring at least a dozen others. the festival is a popular spot for school fund raisers >> when the shooting occurred, we had -- we're estimating 500 students and family members at the park when the shooting occurred. so it's just incredibly that they got out safely. >>. >> reporter: and since then, superintendent dr. debra nor rez said they'ving had hundreds of students use the available counseling services. two additional counsel irs would

>> today was one of the worst days for the stocks of the year. the dow fell more than 800 points dropping 3%. the plunge happened after the ten-year treasury bond yield dropped to levels not seen since 2007. abc news reporter meghan tevrizian has a look at the factors behind today's drop. >> reporter: stocks falling sharply today after the bond market raised another warning flag on the economy. the dow riding a roller coaster all day before closing down more than 800 points at the end of trading. the second biggest drop this year. the ten-year treasury briefly dropping before the two-year treasury's yield the first time since 2007 striking fear of looming recession. rebecca jarvis saying a couple things are rattling wall street right now. >> first of all, you have what's called the inversion in the yield curve. think about it like this, what it's telling wall street is that a recession could be coming in the next six to 18 months.

>> another issue, the trade war with china. >> from a wall street standpoint, the issue is now where do the talks go from here. is there even potential for any kind of resolution before the 2020 elections. goldman sachs believes that no, that's not going to happen. >> meghan tevrizian, abc news, new york. >> if you have driven in san francisco no doubt you've seen them, those red transit only lanes that line some major streets in the city like market street and mission. now more and more are popping up. that is the problem for some as you can see. it's these here where you're not supposed to cross the solid line into the lane and businesses say that is affecting them. if you're not supposed to be in that lane, how can you then make a right-hand turn into the drive away of a business. one group of business owners who fought back have won a temporary victory. abc7 news reporter wayne freedman is live on guerry street with their story. >> there is an interesting

101 gilroy, 72 half moon bay. a blue sky over the golden gate. 102 in met petaluma, 103 concord and livermore. it's extremely hot. santa cruz, intense heat inland continues for two more days wit a much cooler pattern this weekend and warming up again early next week. overnight, almost a cloudless overnight period. mabe high clouds near the coast. lows range from mid 50s at the coast to about 60 near the bay shoreline to mid and upper 60s in inland east bay locations. highest tomorrow, once again numerous 100 degree plus readings will be found. north bay to east bay to south bay. lots of 90s around the bay shoreline tomorrow. it will be slightly cooler near the coast and bay on friday. but we'll continue to see triple digits inland on friday. saturday, there will be general cooling across the entire region

remember that grizzly murder in san francisco last year? the torso of a man just a torso no, head, no hands found in a fish tank in his home south of market? >> what's happened in that case on the one-year anniversary of that story. ac7 news reporter vic lee is live in the newsroom with the follow-up. vic? >> reporter: larry, that is the $60,000 question. brian egg's neighbors and friends are asking what's happened to this case? has anyone been arrested? anyone charged? one thing's for sure. it's a murder that's hard to forget. >> it was quite a grizzly murder number one. it's like a memorable one. >> reporter: simon lives on

clara street south of market. the same ally wherer-old brian egg lived till he went missing. scot-free was also a neighbor and good friend. he now cleans up the alliway like egg did regularly. he waters the plants he cultivated with lobbing care. >> when he suddenly disappeared i knew there had to be something amiss there. >> reporter: that was back in june of last year. the message on egg's phone said he was away on vacation. suspicious because he never used voice mail and the voice was not his. neighbors also saw strange in other words his home. free asked police to do a welfare check on egg. they did, but it was only cursory. >> no response to the door. saw no suspicious circumstances. >> reporter: in mid-august, a big break. scott looked out his window. >> a big white crime scene clean-up crew. >> reporter: this time responding officers found someone in the house and a

strange odor wafting through a locked room. police found a body without head or hands in a large fish tank. they arrested lance silva and another transient living in the house, both charged with i.d. theft, financial crimes and homicide. through dna, the mutilated body was identified that as that of brian egg. he was murdered and died from blunt trauma. one year later, still no arrests. >> it appears they've gotten away with murder because nobody is in jail currently. >> reporter: silva and his friend were released. the da with drew charges saying more investigation was needed. neighbors are frustrated at the lack of feedback from police. >> nothing's happened as far as i know. >> i just wish that the police were being more active with the investigation. maybe they say that they are but it certainly doesn't appear that way to me. >> reporter: the da's office says there are no charges because police have yet to present a case. the sfpd says it's still under

investigation. now, sources tell us that the two men initially arrested could be charged with lesser crimes like i.d. and financial theft. possibly mutilation of a body. but authorities want to be sure first of all they're not the killers. so the investigation continues. vic lee, abc7 news. >> thank you. a fresno man's cause of dath is under investigation after he collapsed during a talk coeating contest at a minor league baseball game. 41-year-old dana hutchings died shortly after arrival at the hospital. an autopsy is scheduled for tomorrow. the fresno grizzlies released a statement say sag the team is devastated to learn of his passing and extends condolences and prayers to his family. >> the active director of citizen this and immigration services is under fire. the poem on the statue of liberty, says give me your poor,

would be surprised they opted into. this is one of those things. >> according to a new report from the bloomberg, people hired to listen to the conversations said although the messages were anonymous, they were troubled by their work calling it unethical. >> critics are saying this is an invasion of privacy that the rules are not crystal clear to the users and in particular, this is troubling coming from facebook which just paid a record $5 billion fine to the ftc because of privacy issues. >> big tech companies including amazon and am faced scrutiny recently for collecting audio from consumers. facebook says it has ended the practice and that much like apple and google, we pause human review of audio more than a week ago. >> experts say this is another reminder to check your privacy settings and to avoid sharing anything you consider personal via social media. marci gonzalez, abc news, los angeles. >> the trump administration is a step closer to relaxing federal regulations governing the amount of time truck drivers can spend

life. right? mitch is going home with his heart-shaped pillow. he used it during his recovery to put pressure on his chest in case he had to sneeze or cough. it was signed by cpmc medical staff. >> americans are taking a lot of prescription drugs. according to the centers for disease control, most adults aged 40 to 79 took at least one prescription drug in the past month. one in five took at least five. the study says most older adults are taking cholesterol lowering drugs but also anti-diabetic medications as well as bate blockers. younger adults mostly taking antidepressants along with cholesterol lowering drugs and ace inhibitors which lower blood pressure and treat migraines. women take more drugs than men. illinois is now the first state in the country where insurance companies must cover the cost of epipens for kids. democratic governor j. b. pritzker signed a bill into law

hailing it as a big step forward in protecting kids and families. they cost families about $600 apiece. the price has gone up drastically in the last second. it will take effect january 1st. >> many of us own a laptop or desktop computer. would it be devastating if we lost the data. >> some tips to save and retrieve your commutputer information. >> reporter: many of us have important information and photos stored on our home computer. what happens if there's a crash. bay area consumers checkbook, what happens? it happens all the time. a big problem is the device fails. either they drop something and it breaks or a lot of these cards these days don't last very long. people don't know that some of these memory drives only last

four or five years. they dee grade over time. but the biggest problem people have in terms of losing data it's not backed up. so the first step is really start a backup regimen. you do have to have a backup plan. i think. >> where in. >> there's lots of ogss. you can have a dedicated drive, an external drive you plug your devices into and back up to. that's kinds of a hassel. you have to do something. there are a lot of different cloud backup services available these days that will do things automatically and maybe even for free. so if you have an apple phone, for example, they give you up to five gigabytes for free to back up your stuff. amazon prime, you can back up your photos and videos to it for free. it has unlimited backup capabilities for you. there are lots of options. you need to pick the best strategy that works for you and stick with it. but one thing to know if you're using one of these backup drives that's an external drive, it has

a life span, too. it also -- it may not last more than four or five years. you need to replace that every now and then and again, you have to make sure you're plugging it in really so it is backing up your stuff. >> if you're not putting it up in the cloud. >> right. >> and you have a crash, is there a way to get it back? >> there is. we were surprised. we talked to a lot of different kind of people who rescue data for others. and found that usually even if the thing has crashed even if you've dunked in water or spilled something on it, they can get your data back. the first step is take it to a really good computer repair shop. we have ratings of shops. the next stop is you might have to go to a data recovery specialist. they take these drives and recover data for you. the thing to know is it can be really expensive to use one of those services. >> like what. >> physical damage to the drive it would cost hundreds, sometimes a thousand dollars or
