it's hot now looking at temperature readings of 106 fairfield, 103 concord and brentwood 101 and livermore and numerous other locations are still in the mid to upper 90s. let's go to abc 7 meteorologist drew tuma on the roof for a further look at the heat. >> reporter: this heat can be taxing on the body especially several days in a row of it. some tips again, drink plenty of clear fluids like water even before you get thirsty. really want to limit that alcohol intake, as well. that can dehydrate you quickly. seek out a.c. if you can. if you're outside for a long time, seek out shade. wear lightweight clothing to keep your body heat down and don't leave kids or pets inside cars because the inside of your car can heat up very quickly. we still have a heat advisory in effect this lasting for another day until tomorrow night at 8:00 for all areas shaded in orange. a majority of the region for increased risk of heat-related illness. the hottest temperatures will be

>> reporter: dan, ama, it's hot all over and here in pacific park where there are usually parents and kids running all around here, well, there are very few and they don't stay long, maybe five or ten minutes. as you mentioned for many students here in contra costa county, this was the first day back at school but at high land school in pittsburgh, not so much. jose flores didn't check his email yesterday so he missed the one saying don't bring your kids to high lands elementary in pittsburgh for the first day of school today. >> i just walked in and the teachers talked to us. they let us know personally the ac was not working. >> reporter: they loaded up and went home with thoughts of heading to the pool. penny luke did get a phone call yesterday about her 5-year-old niece. >> they said they are to not having school until monday because the air conditioner is not working yet. >> reporter: pittsburgh unified set aside $1.9 million to replace the air conditioning

units with hopes of having them ready today but inne an email, e superintendent cancelled classes until monday at the earliest. her statement said i hope we can start school on monday but i cannot give you a firm date until we have confidence the work is completed and air is functioning. she promised to keep parents informed. we didn't see much work going on during the hottest part of the day, just landscapers in walnut creek but heard from bart riders about the heat on the trains this morning. >> very hot. i had to take this off. the a.c. never works. >> reporter: we decided to check for ourselves armed with a hand held thermometer. i rode the train. the temperature on the platform reached almost 91 but inside the train with the air conditioner going, the thermometer read 88.7. it actually felt cooler than that in an almost empty car. so here is eric's totally

following the release of the man shown in this surveillance video as he tries to enter her apartment building over the weakened. she falls to the ground as she struggles with him. he continues to grab her. she finally crawls inside. it ends as she and the person at the front desk try to keep him out. the man identified by police as austin james vincent was arrested and charged with battery, false imprisonment and second degree robbery. he appeared in court for the first time yesterday. the d.a. said prosecutors expressed concerns about his release. ultimately, the court released him on assertive case management. vincent walked away even after the judge read the police report the public safety assessment and yes, watched the video. >> the judge has seen the video. she still thinks that this man is okay to be on the streets. >> reporter: instead, the judge ordered vincent enrolled in a program with assertive case

year later. you may remember the torso of a man without his head and hands was found in a fish tank in his home south of market. i said it was grizzly. vic lee has been looking into what happened in the investigation in the months since and he's in the newsroom with the latest. vic? >> reporter: dan, it's a murder hard to forget. one year later friends and neighbors are still wondering what's happened to this high-profile case. unfortunately, many questions are still unresolved. >> it was quite a grizzly murder. >> reporter: he lives on a small ally south of market, the same valley 65-year-old brian ag lived until he went missing. scott free was a neighbor and good friend. >> when he suddenly disappeared, i knew there had to be something a miss there. >> reporter: there was back in june last year. neighbors say strangers in his home. free asked police to do a welfare check. they did.

it was only cursory. >> no response to the door. and saw no suspicious circumstances. >> reporter: in mid august, a big break. scott looked out his window. >> a big white crime scene cleanup crew arrived. >> reporter: another frantic call to police. this time responding officers found someone in the house and a strange odor through a locked room. police found a body without a head or hands in a large fish tank. they arrested lance silva and another transient living in the house charged with i.d. theft, financial crimes and homicide. through dna the mutilated body was identified as brian egg. he was murdered and died from blunt force trama. one year later no arrests. the two men were released and the d.a. with drew charges saying more investigation is needed. neighbors are frustrated at the lack of feedback from police. >> as far as i know, nothing has happened. >> i wish that the police were

being more active with the investigation. >> reporter: well, the d.a.'s office says there is no charges because police have yet to present a case and the sfpd says it's still under investigation. but one police official tells me they are following and i'm quoting him some good leads. he says they are confident they will make an arrest. vic lee, abc 7 news. >> thank you. today the jury deliberating in the ghost ship trial got what they requested yesterday in a note to the judge. a chance to hear testimony read back to them by the court reporter. abc 7 news leslie brinkley joins us outside the courthouse with the latest, leslie? >> reporter: that's right. it's day eight of deliberations and defense attorneys thought things looked promising but the jury did a pivot this afternoon and now they fear that a verdict could be close at hand that may not favor them. the jury requested testimony be reread from three people, two prosecution witnesses and one of

the defendants derick almena but abruptly this afternoon after hearing the testimony reread from those prosecution witnesses, they decided they didn't need to hear al mmena's testimony after all. suck que say questered in a room, jurors heard the may 6th testimony of prosecution witness nickelous bouchard read back to them. they co-signed the lease with defendant derick almena. he moved into the warehouse but later alarmed he said at changes that were made. he said he wanted sprinklers and electrical upgrades and described almena's reaction. he scoffed and laughed at us. he said it was too main stream. derrick liked to do things not by the books. next, the jury heard the testimony of prosecution witness ryan o'keefe read back to them. o'keefe worked the door the night of the fire. and described how he heard popping sounds under cutting the

defense's arson theory. the jury was expected to hear the testimony of defendant derriick almena read back to th. >> it's a good sign they want my client's words. >> reporter: but the jury sent a note to the judge this afternoon saying they didn't need the testimony suggests to me they poised to make a decision without consideration of my client's testimony, which, you know, anguishes me. >> reporter: it's a very strict process. the court reporter comes into the jury room and rereads what the jury requests and then the jury communicates with the judge via handwritten notes. now, if the defense is right as you heard there, we could have a verdict potentially as early as tomorrow afternoon but they are going to get a late start on deliberations tomorrow. one juror asked they be allowed to come in late to take their

in san francisco's red carpet lanes, public transit only but these lanes are the reason a group of small business owners have taken on the metro transportation commission. wayne freedman has the story. >> reporter: it has been a pretty good living owning one of the few car washes in san francisco for corey and his brother, it's been a squeaky clean money machine siphoning business without major hassles for three decades. now not so much. >> i have my life savings and 28 years of time working here. >> reporter: an issue with san francisco's municipal transportation commission when it restriped the white line for taxis and buses only with plans to paint it red. merchants around here including joseph lama say the lanes hurt

business by 30%. look at the lunchtime crowd. >> it won't make a difference two or three minutes, one minute the bus. it's not going to make a big difference putting the red lane. >> reporter: no doubt you seen these red zones, 14 miles of them and transit lanes designed to ease traffic flow. 43 miles after lanes in all but after doing a public record search, core rir ay and his bro realized they didn't follow protocol. they shouldn't even be here he says. >> they put in the red lane and removed bus stops and reported two minutes faster transit times but what they didn't tell the public is they removed bus stops in each direction. >> reporter: he says they created a confusing traffic hazard or to be blunt about it. >> 100% data rigging. >> they have extra money they want to spend. >> reporter: the sfmta acknowledges making a mistake but not how the merchants typify it. >> how can that happen? it. >> it's something that did happen. i don't have all the details of

what happen in this case but did happen. it's a misunderstanding and we apologize for that in for that a >> reporter: the merchants talking legal action. today lawyers for victims of tubs fire in the north bay asked a bankruptcy judge to lift a stay to pursue a state court trial to determine if pg&e was responsible for the deadly fire. pg&e said private equipment started that fire but victims believe it was pg&e equipment that started it. we are keeping an eye on the biggest pg&e power outage happening now in danville down to about 600 customers from the peak of 3500 scene in orange. you see in the middle. pg&e blames the outage on the heat. >> the heat puts on extra strain on the power grid and adds to the risk of wildfire. how much longer will it last? >> spencer? >> we have at least one more day

you have been warned, these signs are appearing in one oakland neighborhood. >> they got our attention because we've made a commitment and safety is one issue that makes a big difference to your quality of life. >> of course. we went to oakland to find out what neighbors and police think. >> reporter: we saw these signs posted all across this neighborhood. it says warning, muggings occur in this neighborhood. oakland effected officials do not care you're on your own and we spoke with people who live in this area and they are concerned because they think these signs may do more harm than good.

at sacred heart church. in. now we want to hear your ideas about building a better bay area. share them by joining our better bay area group on facebook. in philadelphia several police officers have been hurt after a shootout with a man barricaded inside a home. the standoff has been going on for close to five hours. officers are trying to communicate with the shooter. police say at least six officers were shot. their injuries are non-life threatening. this started when officers tried to serve a narcotics warrant. today a large showing of law enforcement turned out to pay their final respects to chp officer andrew moy junior shot and killed monday. he was on a traffic stop in riverside doing paperwork to impound the pickup truck he had pulled over when the driver grabbed a rifle and opened fire. turned into a gun battle that ended with the officer and suspect dead and two other officers wounded. the chp says his death is the

2311st in the history of the highway patrol.st in the histor highway patrol. san jose house fire claimed two lives. the fire started august 5th at her home on green moore drive. her 11-year-old granddaughter sure come to smoke inhalation. a 22-year-old man jumped out of a window and survived. the cause still under investigation. a taco eating challenge turned deadline for one contestant. corn hoggard has the story. >> reporter: dana came to the park with an appetite tuesday night. he told a fellow grizzlies fan he starved himself all day to win an armature taco eating contest between innings. >> he mentioned he was, you know, he was diabetic and he had some beer and it was hot outside.

>> reporter: he offered him some food but he was saving himself for tacos and then he popped up on the jumbo tron video screen winning the competition. >> he ate about half the sheet of tacos, and then he stopped because you could tell he was -- there was too much food in him and then i think he kind of chewed a little more and then started on another one and the screen blacked out. >> reporter: investigatiors say he choked during the contest. emergency medical personnel at the stadium rushed in to help and got him to a nearby hospital. >> once he got to the emergency room, staff was having to clear food out of his airway and then complications continued in a little less than 30 minutes later he passed away. >> reporter: corners say he had other medical issues and will conduct an autopsy to see if anything other than choking contributed to his death. >> what an awful story. well today students started school in gilroy, two and a half weeks after a gunman killed

three people at the garlic festival. for the first week of classes two additional counselors will be on hand at all 15 district schools and extra security. teachers are trained how to handle students grieving. the superintendent said the attack hit very close to home. >> we're estimating at least 500 students and family members at the park when the shooting occurred, so it's a very -- it's just incredible that they got out safely. >> at the end of every school day, administrators plan to hold a meeting to discuss the resources and when or if they should stop them. new at 6:0 oc0, spirited reaction to a decision not to paint over a controversial mural at george washington high school in san francisco. this time it's not about politics but the money. sports radio personality joe has been running a go fund me campaign to raise money to upgrade the school's locker room. his goal is to raise $7,000 to replace the lockers and make other repairs to that ageing facility. when he heard the price tag to

lyft. his goal is to take home $200 in fairs. these are three of four tickets he says he received in the last month. >> one ticket can mess up that whole day's worth of work. because at that point you're driving for the city. >> reporter: he says men are taking photos and sending the registered vehicle owners tickets. he took this video and chased drivers away before they could get ticketed. >> you can film all you want. >> i know i can. >> as soon as you interfere with our job we'll make a phone call. >> reporter: we spoke to six other ride share drivers with similar experiences with tickets declined to go on camera. the san francisco municipal transportation agency declined to go on camera and said it tickets all violators and not just the ride share drivers. in fact, the shuttle driver also said he received a ticket for picking up in a taxi zone. >> there is no signs or a sign

conditions and clear skies just about everywhere except for a little fog. just a spot or two. overnight lows will be in the 50s to mid 60s, which is pretty warm for overnight and tomorrow we'll be just as hot as today in many locations. especially inland where we expect about a dozen or more locations to top out at 100 degrees or higher. we'll see mid-90s around the bay shoreline, 82 here in san francisco, 73 at half moon bay and another spare the air day, the poorest air quality is inland east bay and santa clara valley. here is the seven-day forecast. the heat will ease on friday. mainly near the coast and bay we may see couple triple digit readings on friday but cooling and a lot of it on saturday and sunday and monday and finally on tuesday, wednesday, we'll see temperatures rising again not to the triple digit level but will warm up next midweek next week. >> we're okay with those triple digits. >> yes. i'm okay with doubledefinitely.
