the bay area swelters. a live look at oakland set a heat record today. >> brace yourself. we are not done yet. we have live team coverage tonight on the dangerously hot temperatures. abc7 news reporter cornell bernard is live in walnut creek for you. >> let's begin with sandhya patel. >> it was definitely a sweltering day. take a look at the temperatures inland compared to the coast. and you will notice everything shaded in yellow is a record for today. 101 santa rosa, 90 oakland, 99 redwood city. 98 san jose. it was plenty hot in firefield, 107, 4 san francisco, 67 in half moon bay. excessive heat warning continues for lake and solano counties till 10:00 p.m. friday. heat stroke and exhaustion probable. all areas in orange under a heat advisory till 8:00 p.m. tomorrow. first thing tomorrow morning it, 60s, 70s. quickly heats up.

by lunch hour, we're already in the 90s. today's heat was definitely excessive and dangerous. now we'll go to cornell bernard in walnut creek to find out how people are coping. cornell? >> reporter: no mercy for the east bay. it was so hot today. this fountain here in the downtown walnut creek keeping cool today. for firefighters it was a really tough day. >> because of the heat and the amount a two-alarm fire. fire. >> reporter: contra costa firefighters battled a fire. the fire fight happening just as temperatures reached a scorching 104 degrees. the chief taking no chances with his crew. >> we're watching to make sure that our people are not having signs of heat stress and we'll pull them aside and have them sit down longer than we normally would. >> firefighters keeping cool

with lots of water. investigators say the fire started in the kitchen, luckily no one was hurt. in dan vi this barber shop lost power wednesday afternoon along with several thousand customers. pg&e says the outage was heat related. the utility working to restore power. for many, it was just toot hot. >> i don't like it. i should have been inside with the air conditioning. >> in pittsburg, the first day of school was a bummer for students at highlands elementary. school was canceled because installation of new ac units wasn't finished. >> they said they had are not having school until monday because the air-conditioner is not working yet. >> ice cream a must have for folks in wall net creek and for rizzo, the dog, ice was a must have to cool down. >> i have t give a shoutout to starbucks for letting me buy a cup of ice to give him a break from the heat, too. because otherwise, poor guy's panting. i feel sorry for all the animals in this heat. >> reporter: yeah, and speaking

one was more seriously hurt. our sister station in philadelphia, sources tell them it the suspect is maurice hill who has a long record of drug offenses. >> we explain the standoff began with a drug warrant. >> the situation unfolded around 4:30 in the afternoon as officers tried to be a narcotics warrant. they were already entering the premises when gunfire rang out. the alleged gunman barricading himself inside the home in a res street in north philadelphia. police returning fire, some escaping through windows and doors. >> officer shot and they're still being shot at. >> the gunfire can be heard as officers call for backup. >> send additional car immediately. >> bullets ricocheting off nearby homes as officers take cover behind cars. a commissioner describing the scene. >> trying to talk to this male. he continues to fire rounds out of the window. >> two police officers trapped inside the home. >> s.w.a.t. was able to be

successfully extract the two police officers that were trapped upstairs as well as three prisoners. they were all taken out safely. >> reporter: the entire neighborhood on lockdown. philadelphia's elite strike force moved in with an armored vehicle. at least nine officers injury odd, six with gunshot wounds. one seen limping to a patrol car after being shot in the leg. >> i'm thankful. a little angry about someone having all that weaponry and all that firepower. we'll get to that another day. it's all about the officers and their families right now. >> reporter: all the injuries are considered to be nonlife-threatening. darria ol vinger, abc news, new york. >> hundreds of people from across the country are expected to attend the funeral of a woman killed in the el paso shooting. antonio says he and his late wife margie have no other family so he invited the public to the service. the funeral director said they're expecting more than 1,000 people to an rbi. >> i didn't think people really

cared about me or about her or about anybody but he said i'm just overwhelmed with all of the support i'm so overwhelmed with all of the well-wishers. >> and the funeral home is taking care of all expenses. el paso's mayor and other elected officials are attending. funeral director says strangers as far as california have also said they are comi. >> right now, dow futures are stabilizing in overnight trading. that comes after today's big nose dive. the dow plummeted 800 points. instead, investors poured money into the bond market. that triggered what's called an inverted yield cuff when the ten-year treasury drops below the two-year treasury. the last time that happeneded in 2007 right before the great recession. it signals to wall street a recession could be coming in the next six to 1 months. >> new developments.

a santa rosa doctor previously in trouble for prescriptions is now facing murder charges for allegedly killing patients by overdescribing opioids and narcotics. it's an unprecedented move by the state attorney general. the charges against dr. thomas keller include second degree murder in release to four students and felony elder abuse in connected with one patient. several of his patients took their own lives. >> new details in this terrifying attack on a woman outside her san francisco home on saturday. watch this. the man police say was involved is now back out on the streets. he reportedly is hopeless. police identified him as austin james vincent. there's his picture. the d.a.'s office expressed concern about his release despite this, a judge decided to release him and enroll him in a case management program. he's been ordered to stay away from that victim. a close call on the water. a cliff collapses on kayakers on the great lakes.

building a better bay area and part of that is looking for solutions to homelessness. >> in fremont, city leaders law enforcement and residents met to discuss how a temporary howing navigation center would help the city's holess population. we're laerk the big question isn't how but where with two locations on the table. >> news reporter amanda del castillo is live with the story tonight. amanda? >> reporter: dan, ama, the city of fremont is looking at two possible locations including a back lot at fremont city hall and another lot on dakota road. after tonight's meeting it's clear the community is divided. hundreds met for the first of athlete community workshops focused on the temporary housing navigation center. the goal get the facility up and running by mid 2020. >> we never had homelessness in the suburbs. it's increased 27% in the past two years. >> two locations are being considered. this lot at city haw and you

laesd property on dakota road. hundreds spoek spoke openly about their opposition or support. colors made it clear where residents stand. those in red say no to city hall, those in blue no to dakota. this man says his triplets attend school a short distance from that location. >> it will have a dramatic impact on their life. so that's a concern basically. >> a third group wore hearts with the simple message yes. regardless of location, they say the 60 homeless people counted in fremont need comprehensive services nearby. >> they need resources. i don't care where they are as long as they're here. >> eventually those 18 years or older will be able to stay on site up to six months getting job training, health support and access to hygiene facilities and more all while working toward permanent housing. where it will go. to decide >> we want everybody to be taken

care of and take care of the most an poor and people that are suffering. >> reporter: site selection is expected by september of this year. we have links and we do have the dates and locations for next community workshops. they are scheduled for august 2th and 26th. of course, here in fremont. amanda del castillo, abc7 news. >> across the bay, a panel discussion tonight in san francisco about homelessness as a health crisis. news reporter kate larson has the story from the newsroom. >> reporter: well, ama, lieutenant governor of hawaii josh green who is also as er doctor was on the panel and said he views homelessness as a medical condition and housing as health care. hawaii declared a state of emergency because of their homeless crisis and it was suggested tonight that california do the same. >> a year ago for every one person that becomes housed two people fall into homelessness. now with the new data, it's for

every one person house, three people fall into homelessness. >> that was jami, executive director of bay area community services. those numbers are alarming but the panel was really about solutions. according to dr. margot with ucsf, half of san francisco's hopeless people are 50 and older. the event was sponsored by kaiser permanente. i spoke to the ceo about a project to help homeless seniors in oakland. >> we've adopted 515 individuals who are homeless. 50 and above with at least one chronic disease and we're working with the city and other organizations to get to ultimately permanent housing. >> as much good work as we're doing in california, as many people who are being helped, the numbers are growing. and until we commit as a matter of public policy to bringing people indoors first and then providing them the services they need and permanent housing, the problem is going to get worse. >> reporter: that was darrell steinberg, currently the mayor of sacramento but was the state

senate president. he and mark ridley thomas, a supervisor in l.a. are cochairs of governor newsom's new hopelessness commission. one within bit of news, jami said five years ago she couldn't raise money for her homeless programs and now she has corporations, foundations and politicians who want to help contribute and solve this problem. in the newsroom, kate larson, abc7 news. >> thanks. take a look at this. a sandstone cliff falling just 50 feet from a group of kayakers. this happened at lake superior. the group of 1 was with a tour group from michigan. the collapse happened just as a nature photographer was overhead. experts say the bottom of the slope had been pounded in by the waves making it too steep. so gravity took over and the top started to fall. very close call. glad to say no one was hurt but they got the scare and thrill of a lifetime. >> absolutely. that's incrediblives.
