help from their best friends. >> announcer: from abc news in new york, this is "america this morning." good friday morning, everyone. thank you for joining us. we begin with the aftermath of that fiery plane crash involving nascar legend dale earnhardt jr. and his family. >> and investigators are getting to work at the crash scene in northeastern tennessee today. this is what they'll be working with. look at this image of that burned-out remains of the private jet, which rolled off the runway and burst into flames. >> earnhardt, his wife, their daughter and the two pilots all made it out alive. this morning the investigation just beginning into why this jet carrying dale earnhardt jr. and his family erupted into flames just after landing in tennessee. >> it's a private jet. >> they just pulled a baby out of there. >> reporter: that baby was the earnhardts' 15-month-old daughter. with everyone safely out it took just moments for the plane carrying 1,000 gallons of fuel

to be fully engulfed. >> the first thing when you look at that i think this is just not going to be good. we're very fortunate and blessed that no one was hurt. >> they were all alert and oriented, but the ems personnel did put dale on a cot and took him to the hospital. >> reporter: earnhardt owns the ten-seat cessna citation. this is what it looked like before the crash. he was the only person on board who had to be hospitalized. he's been released after being treated for cuts and abrasions. a family spokesman tweeting "i know i speak for everyone here in saying we are so grateful for the outpouring of concern and support. everyone is doing well enough. lots of hugs. lots of prayers to the good lord." >> the way they hit the impact on the bank there and everything came up on the road they're very lucky. >> reporter: attention turns now to what caused the crash. the local mayor says the plane touched down about halfway down the runway, leaving very little room to stop. the mayor also says the pilot has flown in and out of that airport many times. the ntsb is now sending two investigators to the scene.

>> dale jr. gets away. >> reporter: earnhardt retired from nascar two years ago. he won 26 races during his career and was one of his sport's most popular drivers. he's been working as a tv analyst and was scheduled to work tomorrow night's nascar race in bristol, tennessee. but his bosses at nbc tweeting last night, "we're all in agreement that he should take this weekend off to be with his family." and authorities say it's amazing everyone escaped the crash with only cuts and bruises. >> absolutely amazing. we turn to the debate over guns in america. after the recent mass shootings and attack on police in philadelphia president trump now says more mental institutions should be opened to deal with mass shooters. he says after they closed in the 1960s and '70s too many dangerous people were allowed back on the streets. he addressed the issue in new hampshire last night. >> there is a mental illness problem that has to be dealt with. it's not the gun that pulls the trigger.

it's the person holding the gun. >> critics say the link between mental health and violence is unproven and they say new facilities would not address the gun problem without tighter background checks. the president last night did not mention expanding background checks although he has said he'd support them. meanwhile, the u.s. attorney in philadelphia is blasting local officials in the wake of that shootout with police. investigators say the man who shot six police officers was a career criminal who should not have been on the streets. the u.s. attorney says the local d.a. needs to "stop making excuses for criminals." the d.a. did not immediately respond. now to the firestorm over israel's decision to ban two u.s. congresswomen who are muslim from visiting the country. israel is citing a law that bans anyone supporting a boycott of the country. but the decision is being seen as purely political because it came just after president trump tweeted on the issue. and just as israel's prime minister faces an election. abc's elizabeth hur has more.

elizabeth, good morning. >> rep and those two congresswomen had planned to visit jerusalem and the west bank this weekend. but now that is not happening. and the white house says in a statement the israeli government can do what it wants. >> reporter: president trump campaigning for votes at a rally in new hampshire. but making no mention of the global news he addressed hours earlier reacting to the unprecedented move by israel denying entry to two of president trump's political enemies, congresswoman ilhan omar of minnesota and rashida tlaib of michigan. >> i did speak to people over there. yeah. they've said some of the worst things i've ever heard said about israel. so how can israel say oh, welcome? >> reporter: the announcement from israel did come shortly after the president tweeted this, saying "allowing the two congresswomen to visit would show great weakness." in a statement israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu, who is up for re-election next

month, declared their intent is to hurt israel. israeli officials citing an israeli law giving them the authority to deny entry to people who support movements to boycott the country. omar and tlaib the first two muslim women elected to congress have backed movements to boycott israel and criticized the country's treatment of palestinians. overnight, tlaib vowed she will keep fighting. >> i don't know what to tell you. this is a country that has made a huge error i believe. >> reporter: omar also condemned the move, writing "trump's muslim ban is what israel is implementing. this time against two duly elected members of congress." and now house speaker nancy pelosi is among the democrats defending omar and tlaib, calling israel's decision "beneath the dignity of that country." kenneth? >> elizabeth hur, thank you. turning now to new details about the suspected nuclear missile explosion in russia.

norway has now detected small amounts of radioactive iodine near the russian border. it comes one week after at least five nuclear scientists died during an explosion at a russian test site. the explosion remains shrouded in secrecy with no comment from president putin. russia has reported a spike in radiation levels in that area. officials in norway say the amounts they're seeing are not harmful. the ex-girlfriend of accused child molester jeffrey epstein has reportedly been spotted in public for the first time since epstein's death. "the new york post" says ghislaine maxwell was seen monday at this burger restaurant in los angeles. she's accused of recruiting underage girls as sex slaves for epstein and she's been named as a co-conspirator in a lawsuit. maxwell has denied the allegations and has not been charged. tense moments on the runway at jfk airport in new york. a delta flight to miami was delayed for nearly seven hours and a fight broke out among passengers. police had to be called. delta says everyone was offered

a chance to take a bus back to the terminal. it blames weather for the delay. and from there we'll take time now to look at your weather this friday morning. a wind-driven wildfire near denver is spreading quickly this morning. flames and plumes of smoke are visible for miles. more than 300 homes have been evacuated. south florida is under a flood watch until tonight after more than seven inches of rain swamped the area. one storm watcher says the flooding was shin deep. excessive heat warnings continued today for california, nevada, and arizona. parts of the south will hit above normal temperatures. but the northeast will see below normal temps and pleasant conditions. coming up, the gas station that started selling gas for 30 cents a gallon. what happened next. your privacy on vacation. how more people are finding cameras in the bedrooms of their airbnb.

this is what happens when gas starts selling for 30 cents a gallon in california. streets were packed in santa monica. amazon came up with the idea to highlight its series "the marvelous mrs. maisel" by rolling back prices at some businesses to 1959, the year the show takes place. but police had to shut down the gas promotion when lines got too long. general electric's stock has been plunging amid allegations of a massive accounting fraud bigger than the enron scandal. a whistleblower claims ge is using accounting tricks to hide its losses, amounting to $38 billion.

>> wow, we are back with video of a kayaking trip in alaska. and a glacier starts to break apart. suddenly the whole thing gives way, sending a blast of ice and water right at them and creating a huge wave. that video is unbelievable. kayakers admit they were way too close. >> very close. now to wisconsin and the fascinating story of how a fugitive was finally tracked down in the woods after three years. >> he was living in a well-appointed bunker equipped with the latest technology until a hunter made the shocking discovery. the bunker is down a trail deep in the woods about 150 miles north of madison, wisconsin. the entrance covered by a log door and carved into the side of a hill hidden from view. >> i've been doing this for over 20 years and i've never seen anything like it. >> reporter: inside fugitive jeremiah button had a radio and a makeshift stove. authorities say he also had l.e.d. lights, cooling fans and

electronic equipment, all of it powered by solar panels on the bunker's roof. and if it was cloudy, they say button would make his own electricity by spinning a bicycle wheel to power a generator. >> i'd seen some pictures prior to coming out here and the pictures alone were extraordinary. i couldn't believe that something like that was out in the woods and somebody had been living in there. >> reporter: the bunker was stocked with non-perishable food and button tells police he made frequent trips to a local landfill for supplies. he had been on the run since early 2016 when he was scheduled to go on trial for sex crimes. button was found in his bunker last friday by a hunter who alerted police. >> a call like this, it's extraordinarily dangerous for the deputies to go to because you don't know the demeanor or the capability of what could happen. >> reporter: button surrendered after a short standoff. he's due back in court next month.

and when he was arrested authorities say button seemed almost relieved. it was his first human contact in more than three years. new details are emerging about a camping nightmare for a new jersey family visiting canada. a wolf attacked the family while they were sleeping in their tent. lisa rispoli says her husband matt tried to stop the animal. she wrote on facebook "matt literally threw his body in front of me and the boys and fought the wolf as it ripped apart our tent and his arms and hands. we were screaming for help as he was fighting it and trying to save us for what felt like an eternity. that's when a camper staying nearby jumped in to help." >> i was able to pick up a rock and sort of lobbed rocks at it for a while. that seemed to push it back. i was just trying to assess how much trouble i was in. i wasn't too sure if it was going to come at me or not. it wasn't snarling. it wasn't growling at me at all. >> matt rispoli there is recovering from puncture wounds and scratches. the rispolis says if they ever go back to the site they'll be staying in a camper van next time. the government of nepal

wants to tighten the rules for people who climb mt. everest after 11 people died during the last climbing season. the proposal includes requiring would-be climbers to prove they have experience climbing tall peaks and prove they have good health and rescue insurance. in medical news the fda wants to add graphic new images on cigarette packs to discourage americans from lighting up. the proposal includes images of cancerous neck tumors, diseased lungs and feet with amputated toes. if the plan is adopted, it would be the first change to u.s. cigarette warnings in 35 years. two triathletes trying to qualify for the olympics have been disqualified from a race because of their finish. they crossed the line in japan holding hands. and that's illegal. the rules say competitors cannot finish, quote, in a contrived situation. although disappointing the two british women will get another shot at making next summer's games. the two teenagers have pulled off a shot that would make nba stars jealous.

101. problem in milpitas on 680. we'll touch on that in a few minutes. the power is finally back on for thousands in the south bay. >> at one point more than 50,000 customers affected by this outage. abc 7 news reporter jobina fortson live in sausalito. good morning, jobina. >> reporter: good morning, natasha and reggie. as of 11:30 last night, the out panel map showed about 20,000 customers were without power in marin county. about an hour later, they bumped that number up to 54,000 customers without power. earlier this morning around 1:30 the utility company tweeted all the power had been restored. look at this video from overnight. it was completely dark in sausalito, larkspur and several other places. police rushed out to put out stop signs at intersections. others managed to have a little fun during the outage.
