bursting into flames. >> in fact, take a look at the aftermath. the plane completely scorched. everyone lucky to have escaped without serious injury. steve osunsami is there on the scene in elizabethton, tennessee with the very latest. what a scene behind you, steve. >> reporter: it is. good morning to you. you know, the investigators are on the scene this morning trying to figure out how and why this plane slid off the runway. people who live in the area say they could see the fireball for miles. they have the roads blocked off here, and when you look at this, it's amazing that anyone walked away from this alive. >> they just pulled a baby out of there. >> it's a private jet. >> reporter: this is the dramatic video this morning of the ball of smoke and fire that nascar legend dale earnhardt jr. and his family managed to escape without anyone seriously hurt. people on the ground were shocked as the young family and the pilots ran for their lives from the burning jet. >> the way they hit with impact, on the bank there and

everything, came up on the road, they were very lucky. >> reporter: in a statement, his spokesman says, i know i speak for everyone here when we say we are so grateful for the outpouring of support. everyone is doing well enough. lots of hugs. lots of prayers to the good lord. the plane took off thursday afternoon from statesville, north carolina, and rolled off the runway and caught fire after landing at the small elizabethton airport. authorities tell us that five people and a dog were on the jet including earnhardt, his wife amy and their 15-month-old daughter. it was earnhardt's own jet. >> they were all alert and oriented but the ems personnel did put dale on a cot and take him to the hospital. i think that was just for precaution. >> reporter: the racing legend stepped away from the driver's seat in 2017 after a decade behind the wheel. he was traveling to tennessee for saturday night's cup series event. he is now a racing analyst. earnhardt's family knows very well how short life can be. in 2001, his famous father was killed in a wreck during the final lap of the daytona 500.

earnhardt jr. is expected to be back on the air next month. here's what's left of this plane sitting along the highway. it skidded quite a bit of distan distance. i want you to look at something coming up on your picture. this is a fence that is wrapped around the bod plane. the plane had to tear through the fence to get to this point. authorities say the reason why the fireball was so large is because the plane was carrying more than 1,000 gallons of fuel. cecilia? >> just an absolutely incredible scene behind you there, steve. okay, thank you. we are now going to turn to politics. president trump in new hampshire overnight telling a packed rally you have no choice but to vote for me. this of course after that unprecedented move, the president pressuring israel not to allow two democratic rivals into that country. abc's terry moran is in manchester with the latest. just this morning, news that israel might be reversing course.

give us a reality check here. >> reporter: not reversing course there, cecilia. good morning. they are, however, opening the door a little bit and we'll get to that. president trump lost this state of new hampshire by a razor thin margin in 2016, just 2700 votes, so he's taking aim at it in 2020, and he was road testing some of his themes last night on a day where as you said he made big news of his presidential clout on the world stage. overnight, president trump taking the stage in manchester for a raucous stump speech. at one point, hurling insults at a protester. >> that guy's got a serious weight problem. go home, start exercising. >> reporter: he also tried out a message of positivity. >> our movement is built on love. >> reporter: the president talking gun rights. >> we will always uphold the second amendment. >> reporter: but he also seemed open to the possibility of background checks for some gun purchasers. >> it's not the gun that pulls the trigger. it's the person holding the gun.

>> reporter: but the president did not directly address how he used his presidential powers to pressure israel into barring two of his political enemies from entering the country. prime minister benjamin netanyahu denying congresswomen ilhan omar and rashida tlaib entry into the country after trump tweeted it would show weakness if they were allowed in. >> they've said some of the worst things i've ever heard about israel so how can israel say, oh, welcome. >> reporter: omar and tlaib, the first muslim women elected to congress, boycotters of that country, have been targets of trump and his supporters. this morning, israel announcing that tlaib would be allowed into the country only for a humanitarian visit to see her grandmother, but still denying access to omar. omar saying in a statement, trump's muslim ban is what israel is implementing.

this time, against two dually elected members of congress. so as for congresswoman tlaib, israel now she has she can enter israel only on humanitarian grounds. she's a palestinian-american. she can visit her grandmother, but israel says she has to keep her mouth shut, and she can't speak her mind on israel or the palestinian territories. >> a lot of restrictions on that one, terry. there is another big headline this morning that seems to have a lot of people scratching their heads. the president might be interested in buying greenland? tell us more. >> reporter: yeah. this is a thing. the president has inquired to aides, even his counsel, what are the possibilities of the u.s. purchasing or acquiring the island of greenland? it has come up before with previous presidents. dwight eisenhower thought this. denmark which governs the foreign policy of greenland and

no go. they say, i hope it's a joke. >> terry moran, thank you very much. whit? now to new developments in the jeffrey epstein case. the jail guards on duty the night of his apparent suicide questioned for the first time, and the woman accused of recruiting underaged girls for him reportedly surfacing in los angeles. abc's linsey davis is here with that story. good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you, whit. speculation has abounded as to the whereabouts of ghislaine maxwell, epstein's former associate and friend who's now listed in at least one lawsuit as a co-spear tore. pictures show as of earlier this week she was in los angeles at an in-n-out burger. for the first time investigators are now questioning the two guards tasked with watching jeffrey epstein in the hours before his death. this as we're now seeing ghislaine maxwell, accused of being one of epstein's co-conspirators. a source tells abc news the autopsy of epstein revealed a

broken hyoid bone in his neck which can be associated with strangulation or suicide. according to "the new york post," maxwell was spotted at a local in-and-out restaurant in california and reading a book about cia operatives. maxwell has been accused by one of epstein's alleged victims of recruiting underaged girls to act as sex slaves for epstein and other men. maxwell has denied those allegations and has never been criminally charged. the british socialite named as a coconspirator of jennifer araoz, who claims epstein assaulted her when she was just 15 years old, and that maxwell and three other employees helped facilitate his crimes. although she says she never met maxwell. >> jeffrey epstein and his network of enablers stole from me. they ropd bbed me of my youth,

calling it beautiful and positive and said kim offered a small apology for the continued launches, but as you said, this is the sixth time within three weeks that kim has launched short range ballistic missiles, and while these are not missiles that could reach the u.s., they could potentially be a threat to u.s. troops in south korea. but kim also tied the launches to joint u.s. and south korean military exercises which are ongoing, but largely computer-based. trump said kim called the exercises ridiculous and expensive and told them that when they ended, he would stop the launches, but since that very brief meeting between kim and trump on the border, between north and south korea, there have been no meetings between the two sides even at a working level and no progress on de-nuclearization. whit? >> all right, martha. thank you. now to the very latest on that russian nuclear mystery. norway says it has detected

radioactive material days after the deadly blast. james longman is in russia as close as he can safely get to that scene. james, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, whit. that's right. we are in the far reaches of northern russia where there's still so much secrecy around that nuclear missile blast. we got as close as we got to the site. let's take a look for ourselves. this morning, looking for answers in northern russia over that nuclear missile explosion which caused a radiation leak more than a week ago. we traveled as close as we were allowed to the blast site. this spot saw a brief radiation spike between 4 and 16 times the normal level. not life-threatening but concerning. i've got a geiger counter here. it shows levels are back to normal. the potentials for far-reaching consequences is clear. the nuclear watchdog saying tiny amounts of radiation have been detected in northern norway over 500 miles away. authorities stressed the level

detected though is very low and poses no harm to people or the environment. when word spread about the incident, people rushed out to buy iodine. we tried to buy some here, but they have totally run out. the explosion killed five scientists and two defense personnel. authorities initially denying any rise in radiation. the u.s. officials say russia was likely testing a new type of cruise missile dubbed skyfall. the the missile is touted by vladimir putin as being able to hit any target in the world. this secrecy reminiscent of the far more serious disaster, chernobyl in 1986. a new hbo miniseries has prompted renewed interest in russian nuclear technology and the very real danger it poses. now the radiation we're talking about here isn't life-threatening, but people are concerned that if or when there's an accident, they may not find out until it's too late. amy? >> that is concerning indeed. james longman, thank you. now to the chaos in hong kong. protests expected to ratchet up again this morning, and

you. scientology of course has been known for its celebrity followers. now the church and one of its stars, danny masterson, are both being sued. four women claim masterson sexually assaulted them, and he conspired with the church to allegedly cover up the assaults and stalk and harass them. this morning, a lawsuit against the church of scientology and one of its high profile members, the actor, danny masterson. the complaint which the plaintiffs' attorney says the actor known for "that '70s show." >> the teachers like him, counsellors like him. i hate him. >> reporter: when they reported masterson's crimes, he and the church systematically stalked, harassed and invaded their families' privacy and intensely caused them emotional distress to silence and intimidate them. one of the women named in the suit, marie babbett, says she

started dating masterson in 2002 and believes that on numerous occasions he would drug her drinks so that he could sexual assault her while she slept. she reported the alleged assault to authorities in 2017. another named plaintiff, claimed masterson was controlling and violent when they lived together as a couple in the mid '90s claiming he once dragged her naked across the bedroom floor while berating her appearance after she refused to have sex with him. she alleges several years later on one occasion, masterson drugged and sexually assaulted her while she was unconscious. she says when she told the church about the assault, she was led to believe that if she went to law enforcement, she would be subjected to the harsh treatment of enemies against scientology. but in 2016, bixler did just that. the lawsuit claims that after going to authorities, bixler and the other plaintiffs were subjected to years of harassment by the church, abuse bixler says

continues to this day. >> it includes everything from flashing lights in your windows in the middle of the night to breaking windows even of a child's room. it is unsettling. it's disturbing, and it's just not limited to the home. >> reporter: overnight, the church of scientology emphatically denying these accusations, telling us, this baseless lawsuit will go nowhere because the claims are ludicrous and a sham. it's a dishonest and hallucinatory publicity stunt. masterson was fired from "the ranch" after it was confirmed assault allegations were filed against him. masterson has previously said all sexual encounters with his accusers were consensual and he's never been charged of a crime, let alone convicted of one. in a statement from his lawyer, masterson called the lawsuit, quote, beyond ridiculous. he went on to say, once her lawsuit is thrown out, i intend to sue her and the others who jumped on the bandwagon for the

damage they caused me and my family. guys, back to you. >> dan, i'm sure this isn't going anywhere too fast. >> right. >> more to come. now to an abc news exclusive, the better business bureau set to issue a warning today about a scam involving those electronic personal assistants. gio benitez is here with more. we're talking about siri and alexa, things like that. >> reporter: those personal devices, you've got google and sir rhys a se siri and alexa. they have simplified the lives of millions of people, but the better business bureau is warning there is one thing we should be doing the old fashioned way, finding phone numbers for businesses and dialing them ourselves. the scammers have worked their way up the search results with phony numbers for real companies and it may be difficult for your smart device to recognize it. the bbc says to recognize a

scammer, they ask you to pay by wire transfer or prepaid debit card. >> i miss the days of the phone book, i guess. what can people do to avoid falling victim to this? >> they say, be careful when searching for numbers. be aware of fake ads, and always get information from the website directly and always ma /* make payments with a credit card because a wire transfer or prepaid debit card is like paying cash. once it's gone, it's gone. when reached for comment, google said it works hard to protect people from scammers and removes fake numbers when they're reported. apple declined to comment, and we did not hear back from amazon. >> good warning, gio, thanks. >> thank you, gio. now to a baby who had the need, the need for speed. a father racing to the hospital while his wife was in labor, but not fast enough. that baby just couldn't wait. stephanie ramos is here with that story. stephanie, good morning. >> reporter: whit, good morning. this family had their birth plan all planned out. dad was on military leave from the navy so he could be there for the induction of his fourth child but this baby said, i'm ready now.

an investigation is now under way after a 16-year-old high school basketball player died following an outdoor run in temperatures that felt more like 100 degrees. our chief national correspondent, matt gutman joins us and has the details for us. good morning, matt. >> reporter: hey, good morning, amy. it actually felt like 106 degrees during that workout in which the 16-year-old died. now her tragic death should serve as a reminder to parents and coaches to stay vigilant, especially because there is no national law regulating the number of breaks or access to water during high school athletic events. the parents of 16-year-old imani bell are heartbroken their daughter is not coming home. >> they said she's in cardiac arrest. >> reporter: they say the 11th grade basketball player was practicing outside, running up bleachers on a hot georgia day when the heat index was 106. >> her skin was just hot, like, a stove and her body was stiff. they had ice packs on her.

>> reporter: bell was overcome by heat, rushed to the hospital and later died. while an autopsy is pending, her parents speaking to our affiliate, wsb in atlanta, say they want answers. >> why were they outside? the temperature was above 100. >> to imagine my child running in that, and that was the first day of conditioning. >> reporter: the clayton county school district is releasing little information, saying, we are very saddened by the loss of one of our students. our team is working diligently to determine more details relative to this matter. it's just the latest heat-related death in what has been a scorcher of a summer. on monday a 74-year-old mississippi woman died of heat-induced heart attack while mowing her lawn. the heat index peaked at a sweltering 112. on average, extreme heat kills 600 people in the u.s. every year. heat exhaustion and heatstroke are medical emergencies. heat exhaustion may cause people to feel nauseated, lightheaded

and dizzy. if that's left untreated, it can become heatstroke which is a life-threatening condition in which one's body temperature can rise to 103 degrees and cause people to black out. >> they have to get into that cool environment, and if they're having severe symptoms, especially if there is any confusion, disorientation, dizziness, 911 needs to be activated. >> reporter: here at birmingham community charter high, when the temperature is between 95 and 99 degrees, they enforce more water breaks and when the mercury tops 100 degrees, all athletic activity is suspended. now, a couple of tips from our experts. they say if you're doing athletics, anything outside in the heat, have electrolytes on hand. these can be useful, and they like to use ice packs. you put them around your neck. something we like here, and we wet these towels. you put it around here, and it can cool you faster.

cherishing every moment with their 6-month-old baby girl rose. this is also bittersweet because jen is battling cancer. >> oh, hello. it's chemo day. >> reporter: during her second trimester, her blood pressure was high and her o.b. detected a high amount of protein in her urine. she was quickly diagnosed with the pregnancy complication pre-eclamplsia. she was put on bed rest. >> my reaction was let me stay relaxed because of this baby. i definitely put it out of my mind. >> reporter: two months after the baby's safe arrival, her blood pressure was back to normal. but the specialist observed her protein level was even higher than it had been during pregnancy. the doctor's prescription, lose weight. >> it was like a slap across the face because as someone who has been overweight for on and off most of my life, it hasn't been a health issue for me. i didn't feel like i should argue with her. >> reporter: she wanted to follow doctor's orders, but her instinct told her this wasn't a problem that could be solved in the kitchen. she wanted a second opinion. she wanted answers, but she

wasn't prepared for what they would find. >> shocking, completely shocking. i have this memory of him telling me that i have bone marrow cancer, but i don't feel like i'm in the same room with him. >> if you have some intuitive feeling that something isn't right, definitely get a second opinion. >> reporter: now jen is speaking out on twitter to encourage others to be their own advocate too, writing, lose weight if you want to but if you think something is seriously wrong with your body, go get a second opinion. jen says the shock has worn off. the feeling of empowerment now settling in. >> so many of us are so afraid to stick our neck on the line, question authority. when it's our kids, when it's for our kids, we'll much more readily do it, but do it for yourself because your kids need you around. ure family needs you around, and women are so brilliant and intuitive. women know their bodies. >> reporter: do you feel like your gut saved your life? >> yes, i do.
