happening now in america this morning, severe summer storms to start the workweek. >> when the tree fell, everybody started screaming. >> a lightning strike sends a tree crashing onto a tent. children are among the victims as we hear from the man in this video just inches away from that bolt of lightning. the new storms today, and the extreme heat on the way. the nation on edge. authorities reveal at least three new mass shooting threats, including a plot targeting a jewish center in ohio while we're learning about the suspect's past. weight watchers under fire. the controversial new diet app for children. why some parents are calling for a boycott. plus, president trump speaks out for the first time on a potential deal to buy greenland even though it's not for sale. also, we hear from the mother who thought she had

kidney stones, but ended up delivering triplets. and the viral star from the little league world series. his unusual position at the plate now inspiring players in the big leagues. good monday morning, everybody. i'm trevor ault. >> i'm elizabeth hur. janai and kenneth are both off today. we begin with severe weather across the country, and conditions will be heating up again today. heat advisories will be issued across the northeast with temperatures from washington to boston expected to be in the 90s. it will feel even warmer thanks to the humidity. >> afternoon storms could produce heavy rain and lightning while millions begin cleaning up from this weekend's weather. >> reporter: this morning, severe storms leaving a trail of destruction fromheidsto the east coa. in pennsylvania, authorities say a tree hit by lightning crashed into a tent pavilion at a swim club injuring nine people,

including several children. >> when the tree fell, everybody started screaming. i couldn't look because it was really heavy rain. >> reporter: two adults and seven kids were triaged at the scene and then rushed to the hospital. heavy winds sent trees crashing down across north carolina this weekend. torrential rain is blamed for this 50-car pileup near durham. in kansas, winds topping 70 miles an hour derailed dozens of cars on this train. storms also put on this dazzling display of lightning. the danger posed by that lightning is evident in south carolina where a man was just inches away from being hit. he says he could feel the shock, and that he's shaken but otherwise okay. meanwhile in chicago, the weekend weather is blamed for more than 500 flight cancellations. pro golfer phil mickelson was staying sparking a fire, and blowing out the chimney. mickelson tweeting, i was on top floor. we were evacuated and the place is on fire.

the pga champ was able to make his tee time later telling reporters his time in illinois was electric. back in pennsylvania, three victims from that tent collapse suffered injuries described as severe. we'll take a closer look at today's forecast in less than five minutes. we turn now to several new alleged plots to carry out mass shootings with the nation on edge after the recent attacks in texas and ohio. authorities now say they have foiled three plots including a threat targeting a jewish center in ohio. new details are emerging about the suspect. abc's serena marshall is here with more. good morning, serena. >> reporter: elizabeth, good morning. these recent arrests were really the result of if you see something, say something. police arresting the suspect in ohio following a social media post. while the weekend arrest in florida after the suspect's girlfriend alerted police. another mass shooting averted. >> do you have any weapons we need to know about? >> no. >> reporter: police arrested 25-year-old tristan wix of daytona beach, florida, discovering a hunting rifle and

400 rounds of ammunition at his apartment. it came following a tip from his ex-girlfriend who he allegedly sent a series of disturbing messages like this one, writing, a school is a weak target. i would be more likely to open fire on a large crowd of people from over three miles away. >> he talks about how he wants to die in his text messages and he wants to kill 100 people. >> reporter: his arrest coming the same day as james reardon jr. in ohio. police say he posted this disturbing video online with the caption, police identify shooter in youngstown jewish family center as a local white nationalist. a friday raid led to a cache of weapons, a gas mask and bullet in front of armor seized from his home. >> with the hate crimes and everything else going on, we wanted to make sure we did our part. >> reporter: police claiming in their affidavit he attended the charlottesville unite the right rally. lately, the fbi has been seeking the public's help combatting domestic terrorism. >> what motivates mass shooters is power and control.

>> reporter: just last week, a connecticut man who police said showed an interest in committing a mass shooting arrested, and followed the arrests of two men with alleged ties to white supremacy, one in las vegas accused of plotting to blow up a synagogue or gay bar, and another in florida. the fbi has opened more cases into domestic terrorism saying they currently have 850 open cases. elizabeth? >> serena marshall, thank you. the u.s. envoy negotiating with the taliban is hoping to speed up peace talks after a deadly attack at a wedding in kabul. authorities say an isis suicide bomber set off an explosion in the middle of that celebration. it was packed with families and it killed more than 60 people. president trump is hoping the taliban will help stop isis from re-grouping in afghanistan after the terror group was pushed out of iraq and syria. he is still seeking to reduce u.s. troop levels, but says he doesn't want afghanistan to become a, quote, laboratory for terror. president trump is downplaying concerns that the

country is facing a recession after that steep drop on wall street last week. the president and his top economic advisers are painting a rosy picture. they're defending the trade war with china and insisting that the economy is doing well. >> i don't see a recession. i mean, the world is in a recession right now, and although that's too big a statement, but if you look at china, china is doing very, very poorly. i don't think we're having a recession. we're doing tremendously well. our consumers are rich. i gave a tremendous tax cut, and they're loaded up with money. >> even though the president insists the trade war is not harming americans, he is still delaying new tariffs on certain goods from china. he claims china is ready to make a deal, but he says he is not ready. hong kong is bracing for more street protests amid a looming threat of a military intervention by china. organizers claim 1.7 million pro-democracy protesters took over the streets sunday, defying police orders.

abc's ian pannell says the determination of these protesters is something china will have to deal with. >> reporter: the chinese have a dilemma. if they overcome sessions, they risk setting a dangerous precedent for a one-party commune and state that depends on authoritarianis watching and respond economically. >> these protests were sparked by an extradition bill with mainland china, but now protesters have demanded changes in hong kong's beijing-backed government. back in this country, two people are dead after a small plane crashed into a home north of new york city. the fiery crash in unionville, new york, killed the pilot as well as one person inside the house. two others in the home survived. no word yet on what caused the crash. meanwhile in delaware, both people on board this small plane were killed when they crashed just after taking off from the airport in wilmington. time now for a look at your weather forecast for this monday. >> good morning.

oh. >> yikes. >> we are back with this video with a professional motorcycle racer crashing during a practice in britain. that's luke mossey. he was thrown into the air at 110 miles per hour. >> he was nearly run over by another rider, but amazingly, he suffered only a hairline fracture of his leg. he says it's nothing serious and he expects to be back racing soon. >> unbelievable video. we turn to the jeffrey epstein investigation. there is a new denial from buckingham palace in response to allegations that prince andrew had contact with one of epstein's young accusers. the palace says prince andrew, is, quote, appalled alleged crimes and any suggestion he condoned or participated in such behavior is abhorrent. meanwhile epstein's attorneys are disputing the autopsy that determined he died by suicide. they're vowing to conduct their own investigation into his death.

family, friends and the coast guard are not giving up hope that two amateur fishermen missing off the coast of cape canaveral, florida will be found. both men are firefighters. justin walker and brian mccluney from jacksonville were expected back on friday. mccluney's wife says he learned how to survive at sea when he served in the navy. >> i understand that. i understand it is, like, a needle in a hay stack, but these two ref resourceful men. >> we're going to start walking the beach and looking for debris. all up and down the beach just looking for anything that may have drifted ashore. >> reporter: they did not find anything, but the coast guard was planning to search through the night. new york city is known for small apartments but then there is this. city officials say a man illegally divided his 630-square foot condo into 11 micro-apartments. reports say the ceilings were only 4 feet high and nine people were living in that space.

we turn now to a growing controversy involving weight watchers. the company has unveiled a special diet app, but it's for kids. >> some parents are calling the app dangerous and immoral. it's even prompted the #wakeupweightwatchers. >> reporter: this morning, weight watchers under fire for its new weight loss app for children. the app called curbo targets children ages 8 to 17, aiming to help them reach a healthier weight by keeping track of what they eat. it also features what the company calls a scientifically proven method called the traffic light system. green is for foods you can eat any time like fruits and vegetables. yellow is for foods that require portion control, and red is for things like soda and candy. the app is raising concerns with parents and nutritionists alike. >> my initial thought when i heard about the app was terrible idea. this is not the direction we need to be going with teaching children to feel better about themselves, and to live healthier lives. >> reporter: the app includes

so-called success stories that feature before and after photos of children as young as 8. highlighting how much weight they have lost and how they did it. and now, thousands have signed a change.org petition to take the app down calling it dangerous, immoral and irresponsible. >> it may seem that our language is really alarmist to call an app dangerous, immoral and irresponsible, but we don't think it's alarmist at all. 30 million people in the u.s. of all different ages and genders and races suffer from an eating disorder, which is a mental illness. >> reporter: in response, weight watchers said in a statement, curbo is about helping the whole family put healthier habits into place. weight watchers went on to say, this is about helping the whole family get healthy, and the aim is to help encourage young people to choose healthy foods and understand the importance of

physical activity. we're hearing this morning from a south carolina woman who thought she had kidney stones and ended up delivering triplets. she was rushed to the hospital with severe pains in her back and gut, and she left a few days later with her new babies. needless to say she and her husband were more than a little surprised. >> started getting pains, figured it was kidney stones because i went through them before. he's over there kind of, like, rocking and she's, like, well, we need another blanket. his reaction is, like, excuse me? put it back. no. i was told we have twins. i'm not doing triplets. she's, like, there's three babies in here. there's triplets. >> they may have their 10-year-old son to blame for all of this. he says he wished upon a shooting star for three more siblings for himself and his sister, and now he has got them. in sports, colin kaepernick is responding to suggestions that the controversial nfl kneeling protests are over.ootom call on suorrso stay strolssalud the players

who continue to kneel during the national anthem. last week, new league partner jay-z said he thinks protests have moved past kneeling. now to this dramatic five-car wreck in the first lap of an indy car race in pennsylvania. this crash involved 5 of the 22 drivers, including the defending champion. one driver was rushed to the hospital. he is expected to be okay. four others suffered minor injuries. the wreckage of dale earnhardt jr.'s airplane is now in georgia as federal experts investigate the cause of this fiery crash last week. earnhardt was on his way to broadcast the race in tennessee. everyone survived and nascar any giving them free race tickets. >> such a close call there. coming up next in "the pulse," a surprise from mariah carey. but first, president trump speaks out for the first time about possibly buying greenland even though it's not for sale. plus, the little league baseball player taking a very unusual position at the plate. plus, the little league

♪ it's time to check "the pulse," and we begin with president trump confirming that he is exploring the idea of buying greenland. >> that's right. speaking sunday afternoon, the president cited this strategic benefit to owning the world's largest island which already houses a u.s. military base. greenland is a semiautonomous part of the kingdom of denmark, but the president seems to think it's just a big piece of real estate. >> essentially it's a large real estate deal. a lot of things could be done. it's hurting denmark very badly because they're losing almost $700 million a year carrying it. so they carry at a great loss, and strategically for the united states, it would be nice. >> i mean, it is gorgeous.

officials in greenland say the island is not for sale. the danish prime minister called trump's idea, absurd. now to an act of kindness captured on video in new york. >> a jogger spotted a homeless man who was sitting on the sidewalk. he took off his sneakers and socks, and he gave them to the man. the runner then walked away barefoot. the video was shot by a woman in an uber. she says she regrets not getting out of the car to give that man a hug. no word yet on the identities of those two men. >> i love the good deeds that are caught on camera, not by the person doing them. that was just a guy doing it to help out somebody else. pretty impressive. the little league world series has produced the most unique batting stance of the year. a venezuelan player nicknamed chicken little uses this low to the ground look to strike zone, to try to make the pitcher throw a

we continue to follow the legal case and community reaction to a man police say attacked a woman at a condo building. >> the suspect is back in court this morning and tomorrow in the community are racking up calls to cancel the homeless shelter in san francisco. >> reporter: good morning. austin james is expected to be back in court for a compliance hearing. according to his public defender, vincent is responding well to treatments. he released a photo to us of vincent. the photo on the opposite side is a mugshot. a judge was criticized for releasing vincent following the attack of a video of the incident and the judge ordered vincent to wear an ankle monitor. the fallout is continuing to grow after residents held a
