minor. it was back injuries and two head injuries. >> reporter: this summer sunday coming after a weekend of wild weather across the country. north of pittsburgh, these patrons taking cover after a microburst tore through this outdoor brewery. trees and powerlines swinging violently. firefighters working around the clock. >> this is one of the worst i've ever seen. we're just glad there were no casualties. >> reporter: the storms leaving thousands without power. in kansas, a lightning-packed storm. a strike causing this house fire in overland park. winds of more than 70 miles per hour to blame for derailing dozens of cars on this train in walton. in south carolina, this man nearly struck by lightning, and speaking out this morning about his close call. >> all of a sudden, i hear this loud boom and crack. i seen, like, a little flashing. umbrella jumped out my hand and it scared the heck out of me. >> reporter: tree after tree captured on camera toppling over. this one on a car.

this is noon to 4:00ish, and then 4:00 on. quite a bit to watch for, and in case you're wanting cooler weather, that's the front that will bring it down to the 70s by the end of the week. >> that sounds good. thanks very much. we go to the white house where the president is trying to tamp down talk of a recession after a volatile week on wall street, and an escalating trade war with china. the democrats trying to take down trump seizing the moment. abc's terry moran is tracking it from the white house. good morning, terry. >> reporter: good morning, george. as you know, the presidents get the credit when the economy is good, and the blame when the economy is bad, and right now with some signs of economic weakness and the markets growing anxious, president trump is playing defense. president trump wrapping up his new jersey vacation return to the white house facing a stark question. is his trade war with china tanking the u.s. economy? >> i don't see a recession. i mean, the world is in a recession right now, and -- although that's too big a statement, but if you look at china, china is doing very, very poorly.

>> reporter: but this is a critical moment for the president. last week, markets reeled. the dow plunging 800 points in one day, then rallied. all the turbulence linked in part to trump's trade war. he keeps insisting the u.s. is winning. >> china is paying for the tariffs, for the 100th time, and i understand tariffs very well. other countries, it may be that if i do things with other countries, but in the case of china, china is eating the tariffs. >> reporter: but most economists disagree. arguing that americans are taking most of the hit from president trump's tariffs. so the white house strategy now, shift the blame for any slowdown to the fed. >> the federal reserve interest rate hikes actually cost us a full point of growth. >> reporter: the stakes couldn't be higher. president trump's campaign argunt how well managed the economy. >> you have no choice but to vote for me because your 401ks, down the tubes.

everything will be down the tubes. >> reporter: but with more signs pointing to economic weakness, democrats now sense the president may be vulnerable on his signature issue. >> we have got to replace him in office if we're going to get this economy back on track. >> pretty much nothing in the trump administration says turns out to be true. if they say the economy is in great shape, i would be very worried. >> reporter: it's important to note there is still plenty of good news on the economy. it's still growing and producing jobs and consumers are spending. politically for president trump, this is the whole ball game, and so any clouds on the horizon are worrisome for him and his campaign. >> no question about that. in the meantime, the president continues to push this curious idea he might want to buy on behalf of the united states, greenland, but that massive island clearly not for sale. >> reporter: that's right, as one of the new york headlines said. greenland to president trump, drop dead. it's not going to happen. he's not the first one to try it. president truman and eisenhower sought to buy greenland.

it's crucial strategically. it has a lot of important minerals up there, and it's for president trump, as he said, just another big real estate deal. george? >> terry moran, thanks very much. amy? george, now to those two new arrests raising concerns about mass shootings. a 20-year-old in ohio, and a 25-year-old in florida now both in custody, accused of plotting separate attacks. alex perez has the very latest. good morning, alex. >> reporter: hey. good morning, amy. authorities are crediting a social media post with helping them track down that suspect in ohio. they said he had semiautomatic rifles and bullet proof armor ready to go. this morning, james reardon jr. seen grinning in his mug shot, arrested for allegedly threatening a mass shooting at this ohio jewish community center. police say the 20-year-old posted this disturbing video online. firing a semiautomatic weapon, sirens blaring in the background with the caption reading, police

identified the youngstown jewish family community shooter as local white nationalist. >> that kicked off an intense investigation. a very rapidly evolving investigation. >> reporter: police also claiming he attended the deadly 2017 charlottesville unite the right rally. he's seen here on national geographic. the fbi raiding his house where they said they found a large collection of semi-automatic andet proof armor., a gas mask he was taken into custody soon after on local harassment and aggravated menacing charges. his arrest coming the same day as this dramatic arrest in florida, recorded on bodycam video. >> do you have any weapons we need to know about? >> no. >> reporter: tristan wix of daytona beach, florida, taken into custody after he allegedly sent a series of text messages threatening a mass shooting. >> he talks about how he wants to die in his text messages and when he dies, he wants to kill

war, now nearly 18 years long. and now turning to the massive pro-democracy demonstrations in hong kong, organizers say at least 1.7 million people came out in force on sunday as tensions there rise with china. ian pannell is on the ground there in hong kong with the very latest. good morning, ian. >> reporter: yeah, good morning, cecilia. extraordinary scenes here as hundreds of thousands defied the torrential rains, threats from china, and police marching on the streets. we saw young and old, rich and poor, umbrellas that have long been a symbol of protests here, held high. organizers say there were over 1.5 million on the streets. if that's true, that's a quarter of the city's entire population. even more remarkable, it was entirely peaceful. no repeats of the violence we have seen. riot police who have attacked crowds before mostly stayed in their stations. also the chinese who released this ominous video over the weekend, never left their positions despite threats from beijing. >> ian, you have been on the

tried to get her out of the wheelchair because at the same time the wheelchair was sinking down. >> reporter: hamilton then jumping in to help. >> i was swinging to him, and i said, i can't swim to him. i can't go no more. >> once i saw that look in his can' go no more, i had to jump in. >> reporter: the two men being hailed as heroes. the commissioner for the u.s. virgin islands tourism saying, a life was saved. we're proud of you. well done. the girl was not injured by the ordeal. they provided her with a complimentary replacement wheelchair for the rest of her trip. >> thank goodness for those heroes. absolutely. >> thanks, kaylee. buckingham palace is responding to accusations involving prince andrew and jeffrey epstein as we see new video about the involvement with the accused sex offender.

involvement with epstein. linsey davis is here. good morning, linsey. >> good morning to you. prince andrew is reportedly appalled by jeffrey epstein's behavior, and he's being scrutinized after footage and recently unsealed documents connect the two. >> reporter: overnight a blistering statement from buckingham palace depending prince andrew after new video surfaced purportedly showing the prince at jeffrey epstein's manhattan mansion in 2010. the palace telling abc news, the duke of york has been appalled by recent reports of jeffrey epstein's alleged crimes. the suggestion he would condone, participate in or encourage any such behavior is abhorrent. this video which has not been independently verified by abc news reportedly shows the duke of york at epstein's home in december of 2010, waving to an unknown young woman. at that point, epstein had already served time and registered as a sex offender in both florida and new york. the prince was reportedly

introduced to epstein through his long-term associate ghislaine maxwell. maxwell has never been charged, and denies any wrong doing. according to giuffre, this photo was taken of her in maxwell's london in 2001 when giuffre was just 17. according to deposition testimony from recently unsealed documents, giuffre says she was told to have sex with prince andrew and several other powerful men which the prince and the other men deny. last week the palace making a statement. andrew accompanying his mother to church on sunday. now the prince appears to be laying low, spotted last week in these photos obtained by "the sun" with ex-wife sarah ferguson stepping off a jet in spain. this after the investigation into epstein's death intensifies. the millionaire's attorneys are considering legal action after his apparent suicide. his lawyers telling abc news,

the defense team fully intends to conduct its own independent and complete investigation into the circumstances and cause of mr. epstein's death. this as a new report in "the new york times" details his final weeks behind bars. according to "the times," epstein reportedly paid his lawyers to visit him for up to 12 hours a day, where they would regularly empty the vending machines of drinks and snacks and he allegedly deposited money in other inmate's commissary accounts to avoid being preyed upon. "the times" suggests that in his final days that epstein had started to realize the limits of his ability to deploy his wealth and privilege in the legal system. investigations into epstein's death are already under way by the fbi, the bureau of prisons, the justice department's inspector general, and now his attorneys are saying they're doing an independent investigation of their own. buckingham palace released two statements, one saying that any suggestion that andrew ever engaged in sex with underage minors is categorically untrue.

george? >> let's bring in a dan abrams. any legal vulnerability for him at all? >> they're trying to get him to answer questions in a previous civil lawsuit, and it hadn't worked. you have to separate it out into criminal and civil. on the criminal side, if there was going to be any allegation about things that had happened, let's say, 17 or 18 years ago, probably the statute of limitations would have kicked in there. that's for anything on the state side. if you are looking at any federal crimes -- and this applies to him or anybody else, who they are looking at. on the federal side, the statute of limitations would not apply if they can show that somehow someone was involved in the trafficking of minors or enticing minors to cross state lines. if you can show sex trafficking, then the statute of limitations. then you have the possibility for federal crimes. as of today, no indication of that. >> that could be why epstein's

former friend ghislaine maxwell could be in jeopardy. we know an investigation is coming there. >> that's the big investigation here. that's what the feds are investigating. they are investigating basically, were there other people who were part of a conspiracy with epstein? was he not working alone as part of this? and they would be charged with very similar crimes as epstein was charged. that's the -- that's the real question now moving forward. >> the other question i have is i can't understand why epstein's -- they were epstein's attorneys. now they're attorneys for the estate. why are they pursuing this investigation of his death? >> epstein has died, right? i think all they're trying to do is sully up anybody else except for epstein. the jail did this wrong, and that wrong. they're going to be accurate. there are problems with the jail, but that doesn't change the fact that it seems all indications point to a suicide. i don't understand why, well, you know, we don't necessarily buy this. what are they suggesting? that he was murdered, and therefore what? the question at some point is going to be, what is their role now? they're fighting certain legal

paula faris is here with more on that story. good morning, paula. >> not surprising, you guys, there's a lot of outrage about this. the app targets kids as young as 8 years old. they enter their height, weight, and health goals. they log what they eat. >> reporter: this morning this new app from weight watchers for children is receiving backlash. the app called curbo is aimed at children aged 8 through 17 in part to help reach a healthier weight with food logging and a method called the traffic light system focusing on green, yellow and red foods. >> green foods are foods that the usda dietary guidelines say children and families should eat more of. yellow foods, in moderation, and red foods should be eaten fewer times per day. >> reporter: curbo raising concerns to some parents and nutritionists alike.

>> i feel like the way this app was built is so similar to weight watchers and just geared completely towards weight loss, weight loss, weight loss. >> reporter: thousands have signed a change.org petition to take the app down, even calling it dangerous, immoral and irresponsible. >> 30 million people in the u.s. of all different ages and genders and races suffer from an eating disorder which is a mental illness. >> reporter: holly who started the petition, is in recovery from an eating disorder. >> if we had had this app in our hands to literally log every bite of food to eat that we know that some of us would have actually died from our diseases because it would have so enabled our unhealthy mentally ill thinking. >> reporter: but weight watchers now known as ww saying comprehensive behavioral family-based programs like curbo don't cause eating disorders, adding that the goal of the app is not weight loss. >> it's improving your overall

health profile by changing behaviors around nutrition, activity and mindset. >> reporter: it also offers breathing exercises and showcases success stories. some showing before and after photos of children as young as 8 years old, and how much weight they have lost, but this also raising some concerns. >> looking at before and after pictures of kids who have lost weight is absolutely something that could lead to children feeling horrible about themselves. you're not meant to be deprived of food to try to be skinny. you're meant to nourish yourself to be happier and healthier and feel good, and food is positive. >> yes. 1 in 5 kids in the u.s. are deemed overweight, but the american academy of pediatrics advised when we talk about health and wellness with our kids that we don't talk about

weight. and for a company that dropped the word weight from its name, because they wanted to move away from the scale, this new product isn't sitting well, george. we should mention the app is free, but you can pay for coaching, george. >> thank you very much. we have a new "gma" health alert. concerns about vaping. the cdc is investigating as many as 94 possible lung illnesses related to e-cigarettes and many hospitalizing teens with lung damage. i'm here with someone from johns hopkins who specializes in pediatric lung illnesses. what are we seeing here? >> we have seen cases of acute lung injury, leading to hospitalizations in teens and young adults linked with e-cigarettes or vaping. cases have been confirmed in eight statements and counting and some of the people are quite sick. they start out with symptoms like cough, fever, chest tightness, shortness of breath, and some progressed to needing the intensive care unit and a ventilator to breathe. we're concerned about that because youth e-cigarette use or vaping has reached epic

proportions. >> what is it about vaping that's causing these illnesses? >> it's a great question, george. a common misconception is it's just harmless water vapor. that's not true. in addition to nicotine, these products emit nickel, tin and lady, harmful chemicals, and flavorings which can do damage to the lungs when they're inhaled and also ultra fine particles which are damaging to the heart and lungs. bottom line, anyone who is using these is placing themselves at risk, and we don't even know the medium and long-term health effects. >> so much risk, but you use the word epidemic. 1 in 4 teens have tried these. what can we do to bring this risk down? >> the most important thing is to just educate people. so parents and teens, teachers, everyone needs to be aware of what's going on, and, you know, teens who use these need to understand that they are placing themselves at risk for lifelong tobacco addiction, and potentially serious lung damage. we encourage all parents to talk

with it? how did you deal with all of that adversity and all of those nos? >> well, you know, i think that for us as black and latin and afro-latin people, and lgbtq people, we have to be persistent. we live in a culture, particularly right now with an administration that is often telling us that our lives and our stories don't matter, and i knew that this show was important, and that it was relevant, that our audience, young lgbtq people needed to know that their lives and their stories have value. >> this is such a universal show also. at the heart of the show, it's all about family, and indya, that just seems sweet. we met a lot of your fellow cast members, and that seems real on and off the screen. >> yeah. i just -- it's so incredible to see a show that's about family, analyze what family looks like

amongst the group of people who have been told their whole lives that they don't deserve family, you know? that so many people believe that we're incapable of being loved and loving. so it's really beautiful that steven created a show that's centered around this group, about family, and yeah. you know, we -- we love each other everywhere, you know? we love each other onset. we love each other offset, you know, we protect each other. you know, if we're not protecting and looking out for each other and making stories, you know, for one another, who's going to do it, you know? >> dominique, you're the big protector. you're the house mother in the show, and thanks for bringing along a sneak preview of the finale. we're going to show everybody right now. >> now the trick here is balance. shift your weight on your foot, walking heel, toe, heel, toe. see? ♪ now it's your turn. jack? jack, you look like you're about to topple over.
