>> reporter: just last month, 15-year-old coco gauff became the youngest qualifier in history to make the main draw at wimbledon and the youngest woman to win a wimbledon match in nearly 30 years. >> she can't believe it. >> reporter: acing her first match in a grand slam tournament, defeating five-time wimbledon champ venus williams in the first round. making it all the way to the fourth round before being knocked out by the eventual champion. >> the glorious adventures of coco gauff at wimbledon. >> have you had time now to kind of reflect on what you accomplished? >> um, not really. i feel like it's harder to kind of wrap my head around it because i just looked up to her for so long. sometimes i'll tell my dad, i got to play venus, can you believe it? for me it's crazy. >> stands were full, people were cheering your name, everyone wanted a picture with you, wanted your autograph. what was that experience like. >> for me it was crazy. because growing up, i just thought about winning

tournaments and playing wimbledon grand slams. i never thought about all that would come with it. so i guess i kind of didn't really prepare myself for it, i guess. and i'm still getting used to . but to me it's just -- i mean, it's crazy how many people actually know my name. >> reporter: back home in delray beach, coco is preparing for the u.s. open. do you remember the first time you picked up a tennis racket? >> i do. i think i was, yeah, 6. and i was at home when we lived in atlanta. and earliest tennis memory i remember is me hitting against a garage. i guess that's how it started. >> when did it all sink in that, hey, i'm pretty good at this? >> always like try to push myself. i know that i'm doing well, but i don't tell myself, oh, i'm pretty good, i think, because i think i can always improve. >> you don't enter a tournament unless you want to win it, is that right? >> yeah, because i won't step on the court unless i think i can win. i think it's silly to go into a match thinking i'm going to lose or thinking that i'm lucky to be here because it took a lot of work to be here.

>> reporter: years of hard work and dedication, which in many ways is a true family affair. her parents both former college athletes. mother candi, who ran track and field at florida state, manages not only coco's schedule but those of younger brothers codey and cameron. father corey, college basketball star at georgia state, is one of coco's coaches. they always fight over who gave me the gifts, i guess. so like my dad says i got the height from him, my mom says i got the legs from her and the speed from her, then he argues that the speed is from him. >> as former athletes, you look at things you could have did better if maybe you do it, so it gives you a chance when you have children to say, okay, these are some of the things i probably wouldn't have done so make sure you don't do those things. i think that's why she's able to be successful because we always tried to give her the very best we can afford.

if she decided not to play again, fine, we'd be satisfied we did our very best to give her opportunities to be successful. >> what advice do you have to give to parents who have children participating in sports, whether at the level of coco or little league? >> my biggest thing with her is, be grateful that you have the opportunity to play. my biggest advice to parents is, be appreciative that you are able to cheer your child on to victory, or in defeat, and be able to hug them if they lose. one of the biggest things with coco is that you're going to act accordingly on the court. make your country proud. you're representing people, and you're representing yourself, more importantly. >> reporter: for coco's proud grandparents, watching her rise has been a thrill and a joy. has it been surreal for you all as well? >> oh, i can't believe it. i was teasing coco, look, g-ma can live off just the crumbs from your table. >> how does everybody chip in and help out in this regard? >> where i'm concerned, the mom and the dad have made some

really good decisions and i know that. whatever they ask me to do, i'm willing to do it. they really put their time in coco. so she can achieve a dream. >> what are your dreams? >> my tennis dream i guess is to be the greatest of all time. my dad always told me that ever since i was a little girl, that one day i would change the world with my racket. so i hope that i can do that, and i'm already thinking of ideas on how i can. >> what kind of ideas come to your mind? >> i think a big focus for me is mental health. i think i want to push that more, i guess, especially now, on social media it's a little bit, i guess, toxic, i guess. so i think that, especially being young, that it's important that people kind of recognize it, that it's an issue. >> when people are watching you play, what do you want them to feel? >> for me i want them to feel that anything's possible. and honestly the sky is the

by two officers for allegedly threatening to shoot up his school. authorities reading that threat aloud to the teen and his mother. >> i avow to bri my father's m-15 to school and kill seven people. >> he didn't do anything wrong. he's still a little boy. he's not one of the crazy people out there doing stuff. >> reporter: police releasing the 15-year-old's mugshot, which we've blurred. his comment was reported to the fbi. a written threat is a second degree felony in florida. across the country, police say they potentially thwarted several mass shooting threats. in indianapolis, 38-year-old truck driver thomas matthew mcvicar was arrested. authorities say they stopped him less than a week before he planned on attacking a church in memphis. police say mcvicar said, i was thinking about shooting a church up but i'm afraid how it will affect my family in the flesh after i'm gone. and in seattle, 35-year-old eric lin arrested for allegedly writing on facebook that he would kill all hispanics in miami and other places. these three arrests make at least six mass shooting threats in the last few days. including 20-year-old james

reardon from ohio who police say threatened to shoot up a jewish community center and posted this disturbing video on his instagram. and this dramatic police body cam video. tristan wicks in daytona beach shores after he allegedly texted his girlfriend his intentions to shoot as many as he could, writing, a good 100 kills would be nice. while the fbi warned of potential copycats after el paso and dayton, no motives have been revealed in any of these six cases, authorities questioning them all and continue to urge the public to be on the lookout. victor oquendo, abc news, miami beach. >> our thanks to victor. also this morning we're learning about the arrest of a new jersey man prosecutors say had a cache of weapons in his home. >> state police say they found a stockpile of assault weapons and ammunition in joseph urbino's van after it crashed last month. we want to get to the severe

and business and government leaders in early september. trump had openly acknowledged his interest in acquiring greenland but white house officials have been downplaying the seriousness of the consideration. denmark has said the territory is not for sale. an urgent manhunt continues for the person who fatally stabbed a cal state fullerton administrator. police released surveillance video and this sketch of the alleged suspect. investigators say the suspect may be injured because of that attack. we have more now from abc's adrienne bankert. >> reporter: police releasing this surveillance video of who they say is a killer on the loose. the first images of the suspect in a violent homicide on the cal state fullerton campus. authorities say this video shows the suspect running from the parking lot where 57-year-old steven chan, a retired college administrator who was working as a consultant on campus, was found on monday bleeding to death from multiple stab wounds. police releasing this sketch of the suspect, an asian man in his mid 20s with black hair, wearing dark clothing. he was seen driving off in this

giant giant holes are opening up in the ground north of tampa, florida. at least 16, one of them 20 feet wide, have appeared since last wednesday in pascoe county. officials say some of them are growing. no one knows what's causing them, but there have been sinkhole repairs in the area over the past decade. most in 2010. >> pretty bizarre. meantime, off florida's east coast, a desperate search is intensifying for two lost firefighters lost at sea. >> family and friends of brian mccluney and justin walker hosted a vigil last night. abc's steve osunsami has the latest on the intensifying search. >> reporter: more than 200 volunteers and 75 boats are in the atlantic ocean looking for any trace of the missing firefighters. many of the searchers are firefighters themselves. some from the same firehouse in jacksonville, florida where

brian mccluney was a six year veteran. >> he would be right out here searching for anybody that was missing as well. >> reporter: mccluney and his friend, justin walker, went fishing friday and are last seen here. >> you're holding hope? >> absolutely. absolutely. this is a rescue mission. >> reporter: walker's wife is seen here getting on a search plane. >> i need to be up there, feel like i'm searching too. >> reporter: the search area is beyond massive. the two men left from port canaveral, hours south of jacksonville. authorities are searching as far as 100 miles north of this area and another 70 miles east into the ocean. on monday a volunteer found this tackle bag that belongs to one of the missing firefighters, but it was more than 100 miles from where the men went missing. stephanie mccluney hopes that her husband put the bag in the water on purpose, like a bread crumb to his location. >> he strategically took out heavy items. he only had things that he knew

later -- >> payroll tax is something that we think about and a lot of people would like to see that. and that very much affects the working -- the workers of our country, and we have a lot of workers. >> reporter: still, the president insists there will not be a tax cut any time soon. he's promised tax cuts before for the middle class. ahead of last year's midterms. only to abandon the idea after election day. but passing a payroll tax cut may prove difficult on capitol hill. republicans have long been opposed to the idea of a payroll tax cut after his massive one two years ago. cecilia vega, abc news, the white house. >> thank you, cecilia. also trump is again backing away from more thorough background checks for gun buyers. >> instead he told reporters gun violence is a mental health problem, and the u.s. already has very strong background checks. abc news has also confirmed president trump had a lengthy conversation with nra chief wayne lapierre. that's what the president told lapierre, he did not support universal background checks.

but that does not mean background check legislation is off the table. and in talking with reporters, the president also mocked congresswoman rashida tlaib's grief over not visiting her grandmother in the west bank. >> tlaib got tearful after she spoke about how she and her family have been treated by israel. president trump said tlaib was, quote, grandstanding. >> notice for the first time, tlaib with the tears. all of a sudden she starts with tears, tears. and i don't buy it. i don't buy it. i don't buy it for a second. i see this person who's crying because she can't see her grandmother. she could see her grandmother, they gave her permission to see her grandmother, but she grandstanded and she didn't want to do it. >> the michigan democrat has been a vocal supporter of boycotting israel over its treatment of palestinians. israel said tlaib could only visit her grandmother if she promised not to talk about that.

she would not accept the restriction. let's move to the severe storm threat across the center of the country and the northeast. >> at least three tornados were confirmed in iowa as severe storms, some packing 60-mile-per-hour winds, battered the state. at one point some 20,000 people were without power. >> take a look at this, these arm clouds hovering over northern missouri. meanwhile heavy rains and strong winds hit washington, d.c. commuters with winds so powerful people were unable to hold on to their umbrellas. >> more severe storms are possible for the midwest and northeast corridor, including hail and flash flooding. authorities have stopped another series of mass shooting plots in three separate states. police arrested a 15-year-old boy for allegedly threatening to bring his father's m-15 to his daytona beach high school and kill at least seven people. police say he made the threat in an online gaming chat room. in indianapolis a 38-year-old truck driver was arrested. police say they stopped him less than a week before he planned to attack a church in memphis, tennessee. in seattle an alleged neo-nazi

was alleged for threatening a woman. prosecutors say the 35-year-old planned to kill the woman and all hispanics in miami and other places. we're learning new details about the sex abuse accusations against jeffrey epstein. three new lawsuits have been filed against his estate. one victim alleges that epstein arranged for her to marry another woman so she could gain permanent u.s. residence. two other victims claim they were recruited and sexually abused while epstein was on house arrest. abc's linsey davis has more. >> reporter: three new accusers are taking aim at the estate of jeffrey epstein, including two women who claim they were coerced into sex with epstein during his work release back in 2009. the alleged incidents took place at his office and his home, whilstein s even wearing an ankle monitor. >> he was having office visitors, some who were flown to him from new york, and continuing to engage in similar conduct literally while he was in quote/unquote jail. >> reporter: one accuser claims

she was 17 when she was first groomed by epstein in new york back in 2007. during the same time he was under federal investigation for alleged sex crimes against more than 30 minor girls. it comes as we're learning new details about epstein's will, signed two days before his suicide. $578 million, including $56 million in cash, and $18 million in planes, cars, and boats. the value of his collection of artwork and antiques still subject to appraisal. epstein's sole surviving relative is his brother, mark. by filing these lawsuits, many of their attorneys are now going after those assets. linsey davis, abc news, new york. a scandal involving racial and gender discrimination and sexual harassment has cost philadelphia's police commissioner his job. >> richard ross jr. stepped down yesterday. this move came as he and the department face a federal lawsuit. charges include that ross didn't respond to sexual harassment complaints from a female officer with whom he allegedly had an affair.
