this man attacked his own lawyer in court. amusement park horror. we hear from the men on this slingshot ride when the cable snapped. the one tip to make sure your ride is safe. and visiting the "titanic" for the first time in more than a decade. the underwater discovery scientists call shocking. good thursday morning, everyone. thanks for joining us. we begin with growing concerns about the safety of private jets after a fiery crash in northern california. >> it comes just one week after the crash involving racing star dale earnhardt jr. this time it's a cessna loaded with fuel about to take off. it crashed bursting into flamesa by passengers at yet another small airport. this morning the second fiery crash in two weeks involving a private jet is raising questions and concerns. >> plane crash, vegetation fire

at airport entrance. plane is engulfed. >> reporter: the cessna citation bursting into flames moments after an aborted takeoff running off the end of a runway at oroville airport in california. >> one plane fully involved off the runway approximately a half acre of grass burning. >> the nose and the tail were all intact. everything but the center section was just starting to burn. >> reporter: all ten people on board escaping uninjured with only a shell of the two-engine jet remaining after the fire was extinguished. >> i'm amazed that somebody got out of that alive. it was fully engulfed in flames and pure black smoke but a jet is the amazing thing around here. >> reporter: investigators say the trouble started almost immediately taking off on a flight for portland, oregon, when the pilot decided to abort unable to stop in time. the reasoning behind the pilot's decision is still unclear. >> i mean obviously the pilot, i was next to him for a little bit. he was pretty shook up. >> reporter: just last week another cessna citation crashed off a runway, that jet

that owned by dale earnhardt jr. bursting into flames after crashing in tennessee. earnhardt jr. with his family and the two pilots seen running from the burning jet. investigators say earnhardt's plane was landing when the landing gear failed. the jet hit the runway at least twice before becoming engulfed in flames. the faa and national transportation safety board will investigate. it can take the ntsb a year or more to determine a probable cause of an accident. and we're following a developing story in southern california where authorities have been searching for a sniper who shot a sheriff's deputy walking to his car. the deputy was leaving the sheriff station in lancaster north of l.a. when he was shot in the chest. the sniper apparently fired from an apartment building overlooking the station near a mental health facility. that deputy is okay thanks to his bulletproof vest which deflected the bullet into his shoulder. the mayor says just before the shooting, the deputy was getting ready to take off his vest, which could have been a fatal decision. and police say they foiled a

mass shooting plot at a california hotel. a disgrunted hotel cook allegedly told a co-worker that he planned to come to work and shoot everybody he saw at the long beach marriott. the suspect was apparently upset over a human resource issue. police say they found a stockpile of guns and ammunition in his home. now to washington where president trump appears to be embracing the chaos he's created around several important issues from guns to taxes to our relationship with nato ally denmark and this morning, abc news has learned all this chaos could prompt two republicans to jump into the race for president giving trump some unexpected competition in the gop primary. abc's serena marshall has the new details. serena, good morning. >> reporter: trevor, good morning. amid all of these controversies there's also a new one, the president again suggesting an end to birthright citizenship even though that's a guarantee enshrined in the constitution. mixed messages, confusion and what some might call chaos at the white house from further

considering using an executive order to do it. now two former gop congressmen former south carolina governor and congressman mark sanford and illinois congressman turned radio host joe walsh are moving closer to mounting a long shot primary bid against trump. though neither expects to win, they hope to offer the party an alternate vision for the future. the president again distanced himself from guns and background checks saying we already have very strong background checks and any potential legislation a slippery slope. trevor, janai. >> serena marshall in washington, serena, thank you. meanwhile in the race for the presidency, jay inslee has dropped out. he says it's become clear he wasn't going to win the democratic nomination. he was hoping to make climate change the driving issue in his campaign. the cdc is reporting an increase in lung illnesses linked to vaping. more than 150 cases have been reported in these 16 states from coast to coast. many of them are teens and young adults.

17-year-old tristan zoefield of texas ended up with a blockage in his lungs. he to be placed in a medically induced coma. that's when his parents found out he had been vaping since eighth grade. >> i woke up just throwing up everywhere. my heart was just pounding out of my chest going 100 miles an hour. >> you don't want your child to have to go through to what he went through. >> it is a big deal. it's not something to look over. >> a utah man also had to be put into a coma because of a vaping-related lung disease. the cdc is investigating but has not linked any particular device or chemical to these cases. new video shows just how quickly the wildfires in the amazon rain forest are spreading. officials in brazil report the number of fires has nearly doubled since last year. that thick haze has spread thousands of miles turning day into night. the rain forest produces 20% of the world's oxygen. environmentalists say some of the fires have been caused by people clearing the land. they blame the brazilian government for encouraging

development. well, time now for a look at your weather for this thursday morning. heavy winds from a thunderstorm flipped over this small plane in college park, maryland, wednesday. no one was inside the plane at the time. meanwhile, in indiana this driver -- look at this -- suffered minor injuries when that tree fell on her suv as she drove during a storm near indianapolis. luckily nobody was in the passenger seat. looking at today's weather, more storms later today from d.c. to boston and storms are possible from the southern plains into the tennessee valley. most of the south will be in the 90s. coming up, the man who tried to fix his flat tire with band-aids and ended up in big trouble. >> no kidding. but first, another scandal in olympic sports. why a world famous coach is now banned for life. and the terrifying moment at this amusement park when the cable on a slingshot ride snaps. hear from th

new video shows an illegal drag race ending in a spectacular crash right there in england. the driver rolled his mercedes after hitting another vehicle at 90 miles per hour as police chased him. he had to be cut free from the car. he is serving a two-year prison sentence. well, two men are speaking out about a scary failure at an amusement park in florida. they were set to take on this slingshot ride in panama city. the workers promised ty ul be aho. instead that cable on the right snapped, left them on the ground and they were stunned when they thought about what could have happened. >> i was totally in shock at the moment the cable snapped, and i was kind of freaked out with my hands still stuck in the air not knowing what happened.

house was destroyed. a neighbor reported smelling gas. we turn now to that deadly parking lot shooting caught on camera in florida. the man who opened fire, michael drejka, is now on trial. >> the case has put the spotlight on florida's controversial stand your ground law. at the center of the case this surveillance video showing michael drejka shooting markeis mcglockton. drejka is seen approaching mcglockton's girlfriend berating her for parking in a handicapped spot and that's when mcglockton shoves drejka to the ground and takes aim and opens fire. the father of three stumbles back into the store where he would later die. drejka was silent in court wednesday as both sides laid out their arguments. >> mr. mcglockton backs up as far as he can go, all the way he can go, he can't go back any further and watch that video. he starts to turn away from the confrontation, and he's shot at that time.

>> mr. drejka reasonably, reasonably believed that that force was necessary. >> reporter: drejka is claiming self-defense. he was originally not charged in the case because of the state's controversial stand your ground law which gives floridians the right to protect themselves if they consider their lives to be in imminent jeopardy. the same law was used to defend george zimmerman in the 2012 killing of trayvon martin but the state's attorney later decided to bring manslaughter charges arguing drejka had 11 seconds to make that decision to pull the trigger. drejka's history is also coming into play. one witness for the prosecution says drejka threatened him five months earlier for parking in the same handicapped spot. >> he said i should shoot you, kill you. >> never saw a gun? >> never saw a gun. >> the trial is expected to wrap up by the end of the week. beachgoers are on the lookout after two more shark attacks in hawaii and florida. 11-year-old christian mariani was playing in knee-deep water in ft. lauderdale when he was bitten on his foot. he escaped but had to get 17 stitches.

from san tre traceee slows to the pass. looking good as you make your way through. developing news concerns over possible arson in the south bay. >> a string of fires has caused damage in neighborhoods across downtown san jose. we go live there this morning. >> reporter: good morning. the san jose fire department said one person was detained for possibly setting fires yesterday on purpose and that's bringing some relief to residents but there's still some concern as well. we talked with one resident yesterday who says they've seen within the last few weeks five fires in the neighborhood.
