sue. good morning on this august 22nd. a warm and muggy day. >> you feel it? you feel that on thursday morning. a live look at the golden gate bridge. you can't see the tower there's. you're never more than seven minutes away from your weather forecast. >> looks like it should abnormal summer day with fog take over and bringing us cool but kind of damp conditions. no. it is muggy. look at our muggy meter. our dew points amount of moisture in the air in the 50s. 55 degrees. we're well into the low and upper 60s. so we're feeling kind of what it would be like if you lived in the southeast or northeast. here's a look. 63 degrees right now at the exploatorium. increasing sunshine, it is going to be warm to hot this afternoon

mid-80s to mid-90s away from the coast. the mugginess will taper a little bit as we head through the day. >> a motorcycle injury crash in berkeley on westbound 80. it's supposed to be on the gilman on or off-ramp. we took our berkeley camera and tightened it in on this university or rather gilman street area and i'm definitely seeing some flashing lights. some in the eastbound direction. i see some possibly in the westbound direction. so we're going to keep an eye on this for you and find exactly where this motorcycle crash s-and if it's slowing traffic down. so that westbound 80 stretch right now highway 4 to the maze is 19 minutes. little bit slow now across the bay bridge, a 15 minute ride. >> abc 7 news is trying to help better of build a better bay area. this morning fierce disagreement with panned hahandling on b.a.r.

>> some groups same a ban like that is unconstitutional. >> reporter: good morning. some passengers said they would be okay with banning panhandling on b.a.r.t.. they just don't like. there's one member of the board of directors who is kicking acrowned the idea of banning panhandling on trains and playing music and asking for money. president of the board says he would not support this calling it polarizing. the aclu also has concerns but the first passenger we talked to this morning is all for it. he worries about the dancers and the riders and those who are asking for money. >> a woman walks up and down the train constantly. i feel bad for the lady or baby if she trips and falls.

it's a safety issue. they should ban it. >> reporter: san francisco examiner reports that the aclu would fight it saying it is likely unconstitutional. the aclu is currently fighting a similar proposal in sacramento. the b.a.r.t. board member who is considering this points to passengers who say they feel trapped on the train and that they can't escape the panhandler. reporting live in dublin, abc 7 news. >> abc 7 news devoted a week to covering b.a.r.t. as part of our mittment to building a better bay area. you can see those stories on our website, abc7news.com. a disturbing find at an oakland elementary school. a rope hanging from a fence which some parents say resembled a noose. abc 7 news reporter has the school district's response. >> reporter: it was a rope but it was a rope in the form of a noose.

period. >> that's what this parent saw in this picture taken wednesday morning. a rope hanging on a fence. >> reporter: for me it was extremely triggering. very hurtful. i was nervous and scared. >> the school removed the rope before student arrived. officials don't know what the motivation was but it made people uncomfortable. >> it's shame. >> the principal emailed parent about the incident which said in part the way it was placed could have been a coincidence but could have been indicative of something more disturbing. it was easy to see the rope as a message that harkens back to our nation's darker history. the school district contacted police. >> whether this was intentional or an accident we're going to be there to show a united friend. >> courtney jones plans to have a talk with her kids, one she never imagined having. >> i'm thinking wow in 2019 here i have to have a conversation with my childose. that's hurtful. > school officials plan to

discuss the incident with parents at a meeting next week at the school. in the east bay, abc 7 news. happening today in san jose police and businesses will launch a program to help victims of hate crimes. special safe place decals where indicate where someone can go when they need help. people at that business will call 911 for them and let them wait for officers to arrive there. this follows to south bay elected officials launching a program to fight hate krams. they are asking for a task force. >> there's a lot of fear in our communities of color, in our immigrant communities, in our lgbtq communities. >> the task force would focus on efforts to protect women, children and minorities especially members of the latino community. it would make recommendations on investments in law enforcement intelligence combat the illegal gun trade. >> a mass shooting may have been prevented in southern

california. police arrested a marriott hotel cook who threatened his co-workers and guests. he worked at the airport marriott in long h anou several hundreds of rounds of ammunition, high capacity magazines and assault rifle. the anti-gun violence group march for our lives is proposing sweeping new gun control measures in the wake of the mass shootings in dayton and pa so. the activist group founded by the survivors of the parkland, florida high school shooting called on 2020 presidential candidates to endorse its peace plan. that plan calls for raising the minimum age to buy a gun from 18 to 21. create a national lie sensing and gun registry. banning assault weapons and high capacity magazines as well as implementing a mandatory gun buy back program. >> the democratic national committee begins its three day meeting. 13 presidential hopefuls are expected to try to lure delegates. inform vt e

through this muggy air mass because it has so much moisture. it's mist that clings to your car and you have to run your windshield wipers. breezy at the beaches. most humid air is this morning. then warm and hot this afternoon. out on the bay no small craft advisories. let's go through the peninsula starting at 7:00. in the upper 60s. same thing at 9:00. jump to 80 at 1:00 and hang out in the low to mid-80s this afternoon. south bay 69 at 7:00. nearing 80 at lunch and then mid-to-upper 80s this afternoon with 80 at 7:00. here you go the eastbound valleys in the 70s through 9:00. 80s through 1:00 and throw mid-90s this afternoon. heat is on. >> we might have a hot spot for traffic. a motorcycle injury crash. a live 8 may be gilman on-ramp to westbound 80 and you see some emergency crews there. it looks like it's off the

really a frizzy morning with the need for windshield wipers because there's so much moisture hanging in the air. number two in the south bay a string of fires near downtown san jose is creating arson concerns for neighbors. the fire department says a suspect was detained for possibly starting multiple fires yesterday. number three the b.a.r.t. board is expected to consider a plan to ban panhandlers on the trains as well as people performing music and dance and then asking for money. aclu is expected to fight that proposal. >> independent experts hired by the family of former san francisco public defender jeff adachi believe he died from a heart attack in february and not from a drug and alcohol overdose. two candidates for the white house will not be there when democratic delegates begin meeting in san francisco today. formeridtid south bend mayor, mayor event.

>> john hickenlooper announced he'll run for senate and challenge corey gardner foris n lots of slow traffic on westbound 80 through berkeley because of a motorcycle crash at gilman. you can see it here. looks like fog is moving in as well. wildfires are burning out of control in the amazon rain forest prompting a warning from scientists. brazil's national institute for space research said there's been more than 75,000 fires in the amazon so far this year. it is up 84% compared to the same time period in 2018. the amazon produces about 20% of the oxygen in our earth's atmosphere. scientists warn that fires are devastating blow in the fight against climate change. birth right citizenship where you have a baby in our land, you walk over the border, have a baby, congratulation, the baby is now a u.s. citizen. it's ridiculous. >> president trump now

reigniting another controversy saying he's seriously looking at ending birth right citizenship which guarantees citizenship to babies born in the u.s. under the 14th amendment. he made the comments while speaking to reporters outside of the white house yesterday. this is not the first time president trump talked about this during his campaign and again last year. democrats immediately called that idea unconstitutional. >> the cdc recommends people get their flu shots before the end of orange county and three children have died from flu related death this year at the border. u.s. immigration officials do not plan on giving flu shots to migrants. customs and border protection told the "huffington post" it does not vaccinate migrants because of the short time they are in u.s. custody. by the time the flu shots become effective the migrants would be released. >> in the north bay thirst for wine has reached a milestone. a billion dollars in agricultural goods sold. wine grapes make up 40% of

88 at san jose. 87 in redwood city. 66 to 68 degrees along the peninsula coast with increasing sunshine this afternoon. 75 in downtown, south san francisco and sausalito. more sunshine up in the north bay. get to you sooner but still in the the upper 60s. upper 80s to low 90s through the north bay valleys. 79 in richmond. 83 in oakland. 84 in fremont. this is going to be refreshing after this morning. look at those mid-50s to mid-60s with humidity levels back where they should be. my seven day forecast if you're looking for stability in your life, there it is. >> new crash in san jose northbound 101 at oakland road. heads up there. we'll check it out in my next report. here's a live shot at interstate 80 berkeley where we had an earlier motorcycle crash. on gilman street on-ramp. some activity is still there.

may be causing a little bit of slowing in the area. bay bridge toll plaza metering lights on. and here's a live shot of the san mateo bridge. traffic is flowing well despite a crash at the toll plaza off to the right-hand side. we check out that drive time for you westbound 80 from highway 4 to the maze, 20 minutes april and westbound across the bay bridge 12 minutes. 5:20. in the south bay, building a superhighway for bicyclists. the transit agency will begin conducting a study on think it fall. the proposed 10 mile off street superhighway will connect the berryessa b.a.r.t. station and several trails. the public will have plenty of opportunity to get their feedback. >> federal government is looking to see if apple's iphone meat safety standard. apple's iphone 7 emits more

westbound 80 and gilman. on the on-ramp but it slowed traffic down on that westbound 80 ride because it was visible from the freeway. traffic slows there. some orange as you head towards the bay bridge. also an accident on northbound 101 in san jose at oakland road. you can see traffic is heavy from 680 up towards 101 and 880 interchange. also we have san fernando street closed right now between 3rd and 5th street right near the san jose state university so heads up for students there. our reporter is heading to the scene where a body was found but san fernando street closed in both directions. santa clara may be an alternate for you. >> we are following that breaking news in the south bay where a police investigation is under way after a body has been found in the road. >> this is happening at 4th and

san fernando right next to san jose state. what's happening right now? >> reporter: good morning. i just spoke with the supervisor on the scene here. he tells me around 2:45 this morning they got a call of a fatal collision. when they got here they found a male's body in the roadway and we're hesitant to show you too much of the scene because there are investigators surrounding that body and working to get it moved. i asked some other questions. was anyone else on the scene at the time when they arrived here. there was a car, a vehicle description, because they are calling this a fatal hit-and-run now. and they were not able to answer those questions for me at this time. he referred me back to the police spokesperson which we're hoping to hear from with some more details as we get later on in the morning. i'll continue to update on the air and our social media platforms. reporting live in san jose, abc 7 news. developing news in southern

california where there's a manhunt for the sniper who opened fire on a sheriff's deputy. it happened yesterday afternoon. the deputy is okay because the bullet proof vest he was wearing stopped the bullets. police stevened for a suspect until 11:00 last night. san francisco city leaders plan to increase foot patrols and social services indefinitiny after a series of attacks. there's been a recent rise in violent altercations in the area including that woman being attacked as she was trying to enter her condo building earlier this month. >> a white supremacist group claims it was behind racist and anti-immigrant posters put up around the san jose state campus. our media partner reports that the group tweeted photos claimed were taken at san jose state. that group is the same one that helped organize the white

nationalist rally in charlottesville, virginia two years ago. a woman protesting that died after the man drove into the crowd. >> a pilot crashed off of the coast of half moon bay. david leash is a well-known professional skiier and social media figure from denver and he has a reputation for provocative stunt and promotion of his clothing company. he denies this crash was a stunt. >> our videos are provocative and edgy but if you think i crashed my brand-new airplane into the pacific as a publicity stunt you need your head kmiend. >> he claims fuel tanks have clean fuel. ntsb will be investigating two other plane crashes in northern california. a private jet crashed and burned yesterday as it took off from the or vile municipal airport. the plane was carrying ten people heading to portland, oregon. the pilot aborted takeoff.

the plane slid off the runway and caught fire. no one was hurt. this is actually the same type of plane that crashed last week in north carolina carrying dale earnhardt jr. and his family and all of them escaped. >> another small plane near the lir more airport. the plane went down shortly after takeoff. pilot was alert and talking when taken to the hospital. first on abc 7 news independent experts hired by the family of former san francisco public defender jeff adachi say he died from a heart attack in february, not from a dug and alcohol overdose. it's a finding that contradicts the medical examiner's upautops. that autopsy said he died from a mix of cocaine andth knoll. dylan miller found adachi's death was from natural causes. adachi's family is surprised by the medical examiner's

conclusions. >> it basically said that jeff died of cocaine and alcohci. tt they were detected were too low to be quantified. >> the family want to clear his name. the man arrested on sexual assault charges involving young boys is facing new accusations this morning. more possible victims now coming forward. randolph holdman faces 20 counts. the reported incidents happened from 1987 to 2015. the boys ages 6 to 16. investigators say the assaults all took place at his home in menlo park. police have arrested a young man for an arson. the fires atwood stock park on july 13th. the replacement cost for the play structure is estimated at more than $200,000. a go fund me account has raised 23,000.
