performance. it is now the top trend right now on twitter and itunes. there was a lot of anticipation. people right now are calling this her most personal album yet and she's always very personal. so i can't wait to hear more. >> looking forward to hearing that. she was so great yesterday. it looks like you had a lot of fun. first though we have a lot of news to get to, and we'll begin with that wild weather coast to coast. severe storms right here in the east and out west, triple-digit temperatures are fueling dangerous wildfires. one of them in northern california called the mountain fire already scorching 600 acres in just one day. rob is here tracking it all. hey, rob. >> hi, good morning, cecilia. it's been a relatively quiet fire season so far. we're hoping it stays that way but, we had this fire broke out in shasta county. this is not far from where the car fire burned a thousand homes last year. this year, a thousand homes threatened. 3,800 people have been evacuated.

they only have 20% containment. a lot of erratic winds. mentioned high levels of temperatures and low humidity, that's not a good combination. we're heading in peak fire season, and also getting into peak hurricane season. we're watching this off the coast of florida. the national hurricane center has flagged this for probable development here over the next five days, 60% of becoming a tropical cyclone, that means a depression or named storm as it rolls up the coastline, south carolina, north carolina by monday. more of an intense swirl and some intense rain bands there expected for the coastlines of the carolinas and also for florida. locally four inches for melbourne down to miami where they've seen over a foot above average from rainfall, so it was very wet there, and we'll talk more about those storms later. george. >> rob, thanks very much. now to breaking news overnight, dozens injured in a train derailment in california. at least 13 people taken to the hospital. abc's adrienne bankert is there in sacramento. good morning, adrienne. >> reporter: good morning to you, george. that derailment because a

regional transit plane collided with a maintenance train on the track. 27 people were injured. we know that passengers described being jolted around on that train, one passenger describes being thrown. his legs split open. now, sacramento city officials say there were three employees on that maintenance train, none of them were injured. good news, no critical injuries and no fatalities involved in this derailment. they'll be investigating exactly what happened. amy. >> adrienne bankert, thank you so much. now to that massive bust, the fbi charging 80 people with trying to scam at least $46 million out of their victims by using fake online romance schemes or hacking businesses. abc's clayton sandell has more on the story. good morning, clayton. >> reporter: and good morning to you, amy. we have all gotten those bogus e-mails from a certain nigerian

prince who promises to share his vast fortune as long as you give him your bank account number. now, investigators say these schemes are becoming more sophisticated and expensive costing victims in this case millions of dollars. this morning, 14 people accused of financial fraud are in real handcuffs busted by federal agents. this takedown in los angeles part of what investigators say is an international organized crime ring targeting everyday people and corporations stealing $6 million trying to get away with $40 million more. >> we believe this is one of the largest cases of its kind in u.s. history. >> reporter: here's how authorities say it worked. investigators say the alleged conmen went online targeting the brokenhearted and elderly. one using a romance scheme to convince a 48-year-old florida widow he was a military doctor stationed overseas. she wired him $87,000 telling the fbi, she considered suicide when she learned the truth. >> the nigerians are famous in variations of that scam.

whether it be romance, whether it be targeting the elderly, getting them to send money, to send, you know, bank information so they can ultimately steal money from a bank account. >> reporter: 32 victims in all including an 87-year-old woman suffering from dementia tricked out of more than $500,000. other schemes stole from dozens of businesses. >> the fraudsters will often hack a company's e-mail system and impersonate company personnel and direct payments to bank accounts that funnel money back to the fraudsters in nigeria. >> reporter: and officials say those 14 people arrested are just the tip of the iceberg. there are 80 suspects in all, investigators say most of them are overseas in nigeria. but six suspects, though, are still on the run here in the u.s., amy.

>> all right, clayton sandell, thank you so much. this morning, there are new developments in the effort to protect consumers against those annoying robocalls. major phone companies are now working with the attorneys general from all 50 states and d.c. to crack down. the companies will offer free call blocking tools for cell phone customers. no timeline yet about when it will happen. by the way, in case you were wondering americans get about 5 billion robocalls each month. >> half of them on my cell phone, i think. we're going to turn now to an emergency landing in hawaii that sent seven people in the hospital. a plane leaving california with 177 passengers on board filled with smoke. the passengers and crew members using an evacuation slide to escape. our senior transportation correspondent david kerley has the story. david, wow, this was really a terrifying final 20 minutes of this flight for these guys. >> reporter: very scary, cecilia. the first warning for the pilots was ominous and passengers knew immediately something was wrong when the cabin filled with acrid smoke. just 20 minutes before landing in hawaii, this jet suddenly fills with smoke. >> it was a very, very

terrifying moment and i thought i was going to die. >> reporter: nearly 200 passengers on board the flight from oakland. >> they came by with some wet cloths for everyone to breathe through with the smoke because it was really getting thick. >> reporter: the initial warning, smoke in the cargo hold, the pilots declare an emergency. >> hawaiian 47, visual four right emergency aircraft. we will be evacuating on the runway. >> emergency personnel are standing by. >> everybody on board was very very nervous. babies and children were crying and screaming. >> reporter: as soon as the jet stops, the pilots deploy the slides to quickly evacuate. five adults and two children taken to the hospital because of smoke inhalation. hawaiian airlines says an engine seal failed allowing hot oil to burn and bleed into the cabin air system. now, some airlines use an oil preservative that contains a carcinogen. hawaiian airlines has not responded to our inquire to whether or not they use that chemical in their oil. george? >> david kerley, thanks.

to the white house now where president trump is set to depart for europe today and a tense summit with america's closest allies at the g7 summit. the last two summits were steeped in controversy. that seems likely this time too. let's bring in our chief white house correspondent, jon karl, and jon, the president's already shaking up the schedule with his call for a special meeting on the global economy. >> reporter: a meeting that will happen sunday morning, george. and it's likely to be a contentious one. our european allies are especially concerned with the president's actions on trade, the tariffs he has already imposed and his threat to impose more. he has threatened to impose tariffs on everything from cars to cheese to french wine. the president set the tone yesterday when i asked about warning signs about the u.s. economy and he said that the u.s. is doing great economically. it's the rest of the world that's the problem. >> that's what the president told you yesterday but there is some concern behind the scenes at the white house about a potential slowdown, a recession, as we head into the election next year, and we have seen the president and his team this week

all over the map on what to do about it. >> reporter: there's no question about that, george. the u.s. economy continues to grow and publicly you hear from the president's closest advisers that they think that the economic indicators are all still strong. but you can see the back and forth about whether or not there needs to be an economic boost, the back and forth about doing a payroll tax cut. yesterday, the president's top economic adviser said that there will be no temporary tax cut put in place. but that the president may campaign on a new tax cut in the upcoming election. >> the president also backed off those calls for background checks on guns earlier in the week, but a top democrat and top gun control advocate in the senate is not giving up hope. >> reporter: this is really interesting. the president says that he had a meeting about gun issues last night at the white house. he's looking into bipartisan measures and chris murphy, one of the top democrats in the senate on the gun issue, said that he talked to the white house yesterday and look at this. he says they have not walked away from improving background checks. i am skeptical we can reach a consensus but i'm willing to stay at the table over the next few weeks.

so it seems like there is some movement on this, george, but i have to tell you on this issue the president has been all over the map. >> yep, he sure has. jon karl, thanks very much. amy. george, as the president faces the crisis over mass shootings new threats are raising concerns. two high schoolers both in florida arrested for reportedly threatening to shoot up their schools. abc's stephanie ramos has more. >> reporter: this morning, a florida high schooler is in custody after authorities received a tip about a threat he allegedly posted on a social media app. according to police, the boy posted he wanted to shoot up his school. >> our principal announced it on the loudspeaker talking about it and it's really nothing to joke about. >> reporter: according to the police report the boy wrote, this is a genuine feeling. i want people to suffer. this is just the latest in a string of arrests since the mass shootings in el paso, texas, targeting latinos and dayton, ohio, less than three weeks ago. just this week, these florida

deputies arrested a 15-year-old boy with his mom by his side for allegedly threatening to shoot up his school. >> kids say stuff like that all the time. it is a joke to them. it's a game. >> do you own a gun? >> i have a gun, yeah. >> okay, so he has hands and feet and can grab your gun and do something. >> reporter: the teen's arrest came on the same day as this dramatic arresve any weapons we need to know about? >> reporter: 25-year-old tristan wix seen here in body cam footage after he allegedly texted his girlfriend his intentions to shoot as many people as he could. police and federal authorities say at least 14 people have been arrested this month. all of them plotting or expressing interest in carrying out mass attacks. the fbi acknowledges the concern that previous high-profile attacks could inspire more

domestic terrorists and they also say they're taking a more, quote, aggressive stance addressing online threats and tips, but what that means in tactics and what's different now is not clear. but, guys, police are emphasizing the importance of notifying them if you see any suspicious posts or anything threatening online. >> the effectiveness of see something, hear something, say something. >> exactly. >> all right, stephanie. thank you. >> can't say that enough. now to the investigation into an elevator accident that killed a man right here in new york. the elevator plunged as he tried to exit. linsey davis is outside that apartment building and, linsey, this building has been cited for elevator problems in the past? >> reporter: yes, just three months ago, in fact, they were fined for a second elevator inside this building and, cecilia, i have to tell you, i saw the surveillance video. not sure that i've ever used the word atrocious, but that's exactly how i would describe the video, in fact, it's way too graphic for us to show you this morning. and many of the witnesses who were walking by went like this immediately blocking their eyes to avoid seeing the scene that was playing out in front of them. this morning, an investigation is under way to determine how a routine elevator ride turned deadly.

>> report of an elevator drop. the person is possibly trapped. >> reporter: investigators say six people were on board an manhattan apartment building when 30-year-old samuel waisbren tried to exit. the elevator suddenly dropped crushing him to death. hours later the victim's heartbroken father speaking out claiming the building's elevators have long been problematic. >> one of the elevators, one of other elevators was always out of service, and he was frustrated by it, and i know the other tenants were frustrated by it. we thought it was ridiculous. >> reporter: the building had been fined nearly $1,300 in may for unsafe elevator conditions of their second elevator. inspectors stating the door zone restrictor has been tampered and rendered inoperable. >> super scary. they always jump between floors. it's like that halloween horror night thing when you're in that scary elevator that hops up and down. it's really bad. >> reporter: the department of buildings along with the police are now investigating that surveillance video.

yeah, that baby survived thank goodness, but surveillance video indicates the mother was in the store for nearly 30 minutes. as temperatures outside hit triple digits. first responders were shocked that the baby was alive. >> i honestly don't know how it happened. >> reporter: this is the stressful scene after mother stacey holly realizes she left her 5-month-old in a hot car. >> i'm not a bad mom. >> reporter: the dramatic scene unfolding in a target parking lot in june outside a phoenix, arizona. the temperature outside, more than 100 degrees that day. >> the child was sweating. the child was red. >> reporter: holly was charged with child abuse and endangerment for leaving the baby in the car. she pleaded not guilty to these charges. >> we didn't do it on purpose obviously. we are just stupid and forgot that we had a baby with us. >> reporter: holly telling police she went into target with her sister and her 6-year-old and forgot the baby was in the car. the temperature in the car reaching 130 degrees. >> we left a baby in the car. >> reporter: rushing to the car, holly's sister calling 911 for assistance, holly able to take her baby out of the vehicle. >> how long was the baby in the

vehicle? >> about 30 minutes. >> reporter: the 37-year-old mother was taken to the police station and interrogated. >> i think that these people who do it who you see on tv, how stupid are they to leave their kids in the car and then it happened. >> she was arrested. we took her back to the police station and conducted an interview with her and she admits they totally forgot, this is 100% preventable. it was just negligent that the child was left in the car. >> reporter: in 2018, 53 babies died after being left in a hot vehicle. experts say there can be a reason some parents may forget they have kids in the car. >> that person gets sent to this autopilot mode in which we have a brain area that enables us to drive from point a to point b largely without thinking about it. >> reporter: in 2015, i got in a hot car to see exactly how hot it can get. i'm wired up. it's about 90 degrees outside. let's go. in a matter of 29 minutes, i started to have irregular heartbeats. >> 105. >> wow. >> at this point most children would not be sustaining. >> reporter: my body temperature

of 105 proven to be deadly for children. so we play it safe and call it. >> here we go. opening the door. >> thank god. >> it's so dangerous. and so far this year at least 35 children have died in hot cars. experts remind us it can happen to absolutely anyone. in fact, that mother in arizona really thought that it would never happen to her, and that's why we do these stories over and over again. we just need to keep reminding people. >> thanks, gio. now to the latest on that american businessman charged with the death of a hotel worker in the caribbean. the suspect back on the island for a court hearing. victor oquendo is there in anguilla with an interview with a witness to the deadly struggle. good morning, victor. >> reporter: good morning, cecilia. as he left the courthouse, he said he was at the wrong place at the wrong time, and that the tragedy happened in an instant, but we spoke with that hotel bellman who saw the end of the struggle and told us there was plenty of time to prevent kenny mitchell from dying.

what do you expect to happen today? tense moments outside the small courthouse as the connecticut father facing a manslaughter charge returned to the caribbean island for his preliminary hearing. >> we all want the same thing. justice. for me that means proving my innocence. >> reporter: scott hapgood was on vacation with his family, and insists he was acting in self-defense when handyman kenny mitchel came to the family's hotel room saying he needed to fix a sink before pulling a knife and trying to rob him. the two fought. hapgood said he was stabbed and bitten. when it was over mitchel was dead. the coroner says from asphyxiation and blunt force trauma. a hotel bellman says he was called to the room as hapgood pinned mitchel down. >> i said you need to ease off of him. just back up a little bit so you could allow breathing for him. he told me, like, he's not going to move or he's not going to do anything about police arrive. >> reporter: clarke who also has

medical training said he could tell mitchel wasn't breathing properly and hapgood refused to move for nearly 30 minutes. >> do you think that if scott hapgood had let go of kenny mitchel when you got there he would be alive today? >> i believe so. >> reporter: clarke believes mitchel died before getting to the hospital. >> i put a mask on him. i even turned on the oxygen tank but then when looking at kenny, you know how the mask fogs up from the carbon dioxide. you could tell -- i did not see any signs of that. >> reporter: an unconfirmed toxicology report states mitchel had high levels of alcohol and cocaine in his system, but mitchel's family and friends outside the courthouse saying that's one-sided. they're convinced that hapgood is at fault. >> i wish him good luck. it's one thing, i wish him good luck with his life. with his life. >> reporter: hapgood is out on bond. he's due back in court on september 9th. that hearing expected to last a week, guys. >> a loft questions there. thank you. now to a beverly hills real estate robbery. two men are now facing charges accused of stealing from celebrity homes using open

brentwood and the hollywood hills. according to the criminal complaint from december 2016 through august 2018, yaselli encouraged his alleged accomplice benjamin eitan ackerman to steal luxury items from 14 homes and sell them in order to repay yaselli's credit cards. ackerman's attorneys say they arrested the wrong person. >> mr. ackerman, i want to say and want to emphasize is not just presumed innocent. he's actually innocent. he didn't do it. >> reporter: this coming just months after lapd deemed ackerman the hollywood burglar saying he committed at least a dozen heists allegedly posing as a realtor rolling up to open houses in a coming back to wipe them out. >> when he showed up, he was dressed to the nines. he acted the part. he was very slick. >> reporter: no charges were filed then. ackerman now arrested on the same alleged conduct. in september 2018 on ackerman's home and storage unit, police say they found thousands of

$6 million and trying to get away with $40 million more. one fraudster using something called a romance scheme to convince a 48-year-old florida widow he was a military doctor overseas. sh $87,000 before realizing she had been duped, and there are dozens more victims just like that. other schemes stole from businesses by hacking into company email systems, tricking them into wiring money to fake businesses. in all, 14 people were arrested. there are 80 suspects in all, including six here in the u.s. unfortunately, officials say most of these victims will never get any of that stolen money back. george. >> okay, clayton, thanks very much. we turn to that close call in the sky. take a look at this video. an army parachutist survived this plummet after losing control of his chute during an exhibition jump. the skydiver, you could see, spiraled thousands of feet toward southern england and thankfully he landed with only a

[ laughter ] but he was tough as nails. i mean, you see a lot of running in this movie and me dragging him and throwing him in places so that was three days of running and that's -- you know, these are like 14-hour days and after a while surely he's going to say, you know what, guys, enough, enough, you got what you need but he never did and then we threw him in the water and then i kept pushing him under water as far as -- i kept thinking he's going to say enough but he never did.
