news to build a better bay area. this is "abc7 mornings." good morning. i' kumasi aaron.august 24. let's start with a quick look at the weather. here is meteorologist lisa argen. good morning. >> good morning, kumasi. we have low clouds and fog, live doppler 7 confirming that. it is already clearing in the east bay. the south bay, we have clear sky, but in the city here the clouds and temperatures are in the upper 50s from san francisco. 65 in san jose with that sun. at the airport, we will have a sunny afternoon with 70s in san mateo. 80, redwood city. right now it is 64 in livermore, and it will be a typically warm day for you. here is the airport in san jose. today temperatures will be seasonal for late august readings with numbers climbing

through the 80s inland. by the afternoon we will be in the 70s around the bay, 60s at the coast. ideal out there. the heat returns tomorrow. i will tell you how long in a few minutes. kumasi. >> thanks, lisa. many of the democratic presidential candidates are making their way through san francisco this weekend. the dwindling pool of candidates is down to 21. abc news reporter liziziziziz spoke with some of them. >> reporter: the halls were alive with presidential candidates. corey bookie, kamala harris, tom steyer, an drew yang, some of the hopefuls moving from caucus meeting to caucus meeting, making their pitch to democratic members. >> what do you need to win over voters? >> work, work, work. >> we can afford to make public colleges and universities

tuition free. >> reporter: bernie sanders addressed supporters at a town hall on college affordability. has anybody not made up their mind? you? what are you looking for? >> to be inspired. >> reporter: that feeling shared by many. >> i got to hear senator harris speak. the one thing that's come out is everyone is super excited. senator harris was able to rally the crowd. >> reporter: the biggest surprise was andrew yang. we have so many talented and capable folks it is hard to pick between them. >> another common theme, climate change. young activists want the party to allow for a climate debate. it was voted down, but candidates told us they support it. >> i'm ready for a climate debate if it comes up, and i think it is probably one of the most pressing issues facing up and probably one of the most urgent reasons we need a new president. >> reporter: one front-runner candidate noticeably missing. that was vice president joe biden. he decided to skip this event to

campaign in new hampshire. one dnc member said they thought it was a strategic error, another said it is a long campaign, we have plenty of time to hear his pitch. abc news. yesterday a san francisco federal court ruled president trump cannot with hold federal funding because of sanctuary laws that protect undocumented immigrants from i.c.e. raise. president trump issued the order after taking office in january 2017. santa clara county stood to lose $1.7 billion in federal funding. the court later issued a preliminary injunction and that order never took effect. yesterday the court issued its final ruling, creating permanent protections for sanctuary counties. the mother and stepfather of a 15-year-old girl are in jail after allegedly assaulting and kidnapping a teenage boy they found in their daughter's bedroom. san bruno police say the 17-year-old victim was physically abused for 30 minutes before the suspects let him go. police say it was a hate crime.

"abc 7 news" reporter luz pena spoke to the daughter of one of the suspects who was in the house and said it was self-d inside her 15-year-old sister's bedroom she says her mom, haydee arguello and her sanchez found someone hiding in the bedroom closet. >> they jumped because everyone was sleeping. >> her sister came out of the bedroom when she heard the commotion, alleging he hit her mom. >> he punched her. my stepdad is not going to let anyone hit his wife. so they tried to stop him and he was acting very violent so they grabbed a rope to try to tie him down and calm him down and ask why he was at the house. >> reporter: according to san bruno police, wilfredo amaya and haydee arguello and the 15-year-old's biological dad, luisandor sanchez, who showed up later physically abused the

17-year-old african-american for 30 minutes and threatened to kill him. >> the victim reported throughout the attack they yesterday at him using racial epomcrmi? ye reporteha was ,e in pain. that's what i remember. >> reporter: friday morning the three suspects were arrested with charges relating to a hate crime, kidnapping, assault with a deadly weapon and deadly threats. child protective services took the 15-year-old girl from the home and some of the crimes they are accused of can carry, quote, land mother life sentences. luz pena, "abc 7 news." if your plans include hiking, avoid the rancho san antonio preserve. it is closed this weekend. amanda del castillo has more on what is being done. >> reporter: a family of cougars

was recently caught on camera walking along a trail at the rancho san antonio open space preserve in santa clara county. >> we believe there's a mother lion with three adolescent cubs who live in or knee the preserve. >> reporter: the district initially shut down a few trails to s dis between pumas and people. after addition allal encountere they expanded the closure. drivers were redirected friday, including sung wu kim who says he runs this place five days a week. >> it is busy. it surprises me. i come here and the parking lot is full even at 7:00. >> they say it is the busiest of the open spaces they manage, and visitors say wildlife adds to the activity. >> i have seen bob cats, deer, rabbits, snakes, tarantulas but never a mountain lion and i

would be good never to see one. >> mid pen is working on it hoping to restore balance in the preserve. >> fish and wildlife has put a few deer carcasses in the preserve, hoping that the mother and cubs will come to that, to draw them deeper into the preserve. >> reporter: fish and wildlife will then follow up with humane measures to make sure the mountain lions don't continue to come close to humans. we don't yet know when the park will reopen to the public, but we know it will be closed the entire weekend. in los altos, i'm amanda del castillo, "abc 7 news". new details in the college admissions scandal. a father charged with using bribery to get his daughter into usc is now going after the school with a massive subpoena request. the court filing shows a request for all records showing how many students got into the school after their families donated $50,000 or more. usc is calling this a fishing expedition. the organizers of a straight pride parade is refusing to take

no for an answer. don grubman says it is happening today despite being denied a permit by the city of modesto. he said he is looking forward to exercising his right to free speech and assembly at an undisclosed public location. opponents say they're planning a counter proceed test. a community nearly wiped off the map last year is getting back together. paradise high school hosted the first football game of the season after the deadliest wildfire in state history. the school estimates about 5,000 people showed up for last night's game, and that's more than double the amount of the regular home game attendance. it wasn't just those who stayed after the camp fire who came to the game. people who have been displaced across the country came out for the occasion. >> our comment has been lost and so our communityst all over the united states. so for one night, and especially today, we can all be together. >> when you are here and you are on campus or at a football game, you don't really feel any different. it feels like it didme 42-0.

in the north bay right now sonoma county is holding its first full-scale evacuation drill as part of a larger effort to prepare for wildfires. it started a few minutes ago at 8:00. it goes until 10:00 this morning in the cavedale/trinity neighborhood. residents who signed up for alert can practice evacuating their homes and drive through the evacuation routes on of to the hanna boys center on arnold drive. the red is the primary route and the blue routes are alternatives. all great things to keep in mind because you never know. >> that's right. certainly dry out there. we are getting to the driest time of year, of course, september and october when the fog leaves us. the temperatures will increase over the weekend. not today though. a good dose of clouds and fog increasing relative humid right now. 59 in the city. 64, concord. 65, san jose. the fog has made its way over to fremont and into the north bay but we will see less in the days ahead and numbers approaching the century mark inland.

"abc 7 news" i-team. this is about a woman who calls herself a virtual travel counsellor, but clients tell the i-team she took their money and never booked the vacations. now her parents say she owes them money too. abc 7 i news reporter melanie woodrow has the latest. >> reporter: some clients say house of aloha hawaii ruined more than their family vacation. for one couple their upcoming october wedding. i have uncovered new information about who is else working with wen wendy wong. as love sometimes going, they took their time. >> it took me a year to ask for her number. >> reporter: describing their eight-year romance as slow and steady. >> what i love the most is his patience. >> reporter: similarly, after mikey proposed at christmas in 2017 they decided on a long engagement with plenty of time to plan and their family to save up. the destination, a no brainer,

hawaii, where mikey took rachel on their first vacation together as a couple and she discovered the aloha life. >> a hospitable culture without strings attached. >> reporter: a friend recommended hiring wendy wong, who goes by wen of house of aloha wedding. >> a to z, everything. >> reporter: three months before the wedding they say there were no confirmed bookings, no flight itineraries and also an excuse. >> it was almost like we were still almost a year and a half out. >> reporter: rachel says far from the aloha life. >> it is the exact opposite. >> reporter: on august 6, an e-mail from wen. >> everything is under water, everything. it is so bad right now with what happened and having to deal with the issues. >> reporter: though issues, including a lawsuit out of new york filed july 23rd by cash flow funding, which bought house of aloha hawaii and wen's future receivables for $50,000. less than 24 hours after wen received that money, cash flow funding's attorney, michael

samuel, says wen defaulted on her first payment of $600. >> my client was just bewildered because in transactions like this it is extremely uncommon. >> reporter: cash flow funding is suing wen for more than $100,000 and attorney's fees. meantime, the milpitas police department says they've interviewed 13 victims who said they paid wen but discovered their vacations were never booked. their cases were referred to the da's office. many have contacted me, many mentioning jamie rodriguez, wen assistant. rachel says jamie continues to down play the situation. >> it sounded like she was trying to cover for wen as well. >> reporter: i learned she works in the civil rec the santa clara county court. >> i did not know that. >> reporter: a policy says employees are to disclose outside work but it is not clear

if jamie did. the same spokesperson said they do not comment on employment issues. with two months until the big day, they're out 27,000 dollars and need a place to say the night before their wedding. >> i wish they never crossed paths with her. >> reporter: seen seven so they their love is stronger than ever. jamie rodriguez would not give me a comment. wen's mother and father say she owes them $20,000 and her family closer to $200,000. in an e-mail statement her father writes in part, quote, your investigative journalism will provide relief for some of the victims and perhaps more importantly prevent future victims. the family grieves over the losses to so many, including several of them. the house of aloha is nothing more than a house of cards, house of deceit and lies.

standing by with the forecast. >> good morning to you. live doppler 7 is showing the fog. it is sunny in parts of the east bay. it is clearing as we gets towards the 9:00, even 10:00 we should be mostly sunny out there. a wider view, you will see it all the way down the coast. as we look at what was tropical storm ivo, pretty soon it will be a tropical depression, still a tropical storm. it is about 400 miles from cabo and i'm showing you this because it continues to move to the north. it will be sheared apart by the colder weather and it will bring clouds into the area. it will raise our relative humidity and it will feel like an east coast summertime thing tuesday and wednesday. here in san jose where it is nice and sunny out there, a few scattered clouds, temperatures in the low 60s on the peninsula. 65, san jose. 68, gilroy, and 59 in san

francisco. this is our sutro camera where you can see up above the sun there and the low cloud deck, below 5,300. 63 by the delta. the southwest wind up to 20 miles per hour. today it will be comfortable. low 90s out there. a seasonal afternoon with mid 60s in concord and livermore is warming up. wait until you see the forecast for tomorrow. we will get into a lot of heat for the next couple of days, especially for the inland valleys. it is cooler this morning, two to five degrees cooler. looking at the afternoon with numbers with that 35-degree spread from the coast to the inland valleys. here is vollmer peak with some of the fog floating through the mountains and lower valleys here. looking at clouds around parts of the bay. it is heating up tomorrow, and then as we get into the middle of the week the system off the coast will allow for some extra cloud cover and extra humidity here. here is santa cruz where it is gray to start, a sunny finish at 75. 72 down in monterey. notice with the mid and upper of

60s you know it will be nice along the coast. as we jump ahead to monday, the heat arrives tomorrow. it is with us for your monday afternoon. near 100 in antioch. how about 97 in concord? of course, the fire danger increases around the bay, even though we have the comfortable 70s in the city. this is tuesday. it is still above average. and then into wednesday we have the relative humidity climbing and that extra cloud cover around perhaps from the system offshore. 90 today in concord. 72, richmond. 76 for you in the east bay. san mateo, also. 76 in santa rosa. 60s coast. upper 70s around the bay, and then the warmer pattern takes shape tomorrow. it is hot enlainland on monday. it is sticky on monday and tuesday and we have to wait until the end of the week to get cooler around the bay. it should be interesting

upper 80s, upper 70s around the bay. by the 7:00 hour we have temperatures still warm, summer-like, but a couple of days ahead into the weekend and early next week the heat is coming back into play. kumasi. >> thanks, lisa. president trump is in france this weekend to meet with global leaders as part of the group of seven summit. the president joined his french counterpart, emmanuel macron, for lunch today. he will be in talks that include the quickly-developing trade war between the u.s. and china. he has been vocal about wanting to bring russia back to the summit. the country was kicked out in 2014 after annexing crimea. president trump will have his first face-to-face meeting with boris johnson since he became britain's new prime minister. yesterday markets closed sharply lower after the latest escalation of the u.s./china trade dispute. the dow plummeted more than 600 points ending at 25,628. he nasdaq closed 240 points

dropping, and the s&p lost 75. now, china's new tariffs could spell trouble for some california businesses. higher prices on american goods could lead chinese consumers to buy cheaper products from other countries and cut into the bottom line. "abc 7 news" anchor eric thomas has more. >> reporter: china slapped new tariffs on $75 billion in u.s. goods including cars, oil, rice, even whiskey. most economists hate trade wars and prefer free trade. >> it is the best thing. it is going to lead to the fastest growth. it is going to allow the economy to be as productive as it can be. it is going to lead to the most high-paying jobs. >> reporter: instead, china will add the equivalent of 5% to 10% tax on goods shipped from america to china, one batch in september and another in december. >> in economics there's a principal that taxes are always paid by both sides, by the producers and the consumers. >> reporter: president trump has been using tariffs on chinese goods sold in the u.s. to

pressure china into ending what he has called unfair trade practices dating back decades. in retaliation, well, china slapped tariffs on california's agriculture industry, especially farmers who grow pistachios worth $$663 million in 2017, almonds accounting for $500 million in sales and california wines with more than $185 million in sales. whatever the product, grains, spirits or automobiles, chances are they will have to go through the port of oakland to get to china. >> this can't go on indefinitely. how do you run a business? >> reporter: zampa says shipments to china may slow but exports to other asian countries like south korea and japan have more than made up the slack for now. >> that's why the port of oakland and other leading industries in the u.s. are looking for an end to the trade war. >> reporter: instead, the opposite is happening. president trump announced the u.s. will raise tariffs on

another $250 billion in chinese goods. in oakland, eric thomas, "abc 7 news". in the east bay a rally today in support of an 87-year-old holocaust survivor who is facing eviction over a jump in rent at his alameda apartment. it will be held in front of the do you kn dune apartments on shoreline drive at 3:00 this afternoon. that's where he has lived more than 20 years. he survived the nazi invasion into the soviet union. his section eight status is not protecting him from the rise in cost of living and his landlord wants to raise the rent by $700 a month. he has filed a com the state, accusing his landlord of discrimination. one day a week, that's all you have to get your hands on the hottest chicken sandwich in san francisco, and it is creating some crazy wait times. ♪ >> the hot is pretty hot. the extra hot is ridiculous, and the burning is insane. ♪

well, if you are looking for something to do this weekend, how about listening to piano concerts in a civil war era fort underneath the golden gate bridge. it places pianos in unexpected locations across the city, and this weekend there's a piano at fort point that's open for the public to play. there will be concerts from local musicians from 1:30 to 3:30 today and tomorrow. also happening today, a trans and friends rally will kick off the 44th annual silicon valley pride weekend at 4:00 p.m. at chavez park in san jose. yesterday san jose's police department became one of the first in the nation to fly the pride flag.
