meeting. >> reporter: really contentious meeting here at the hilton union square which centered on climate change and the call for a single debate on the issue democratic candidates running for president made stops at the summer meetin in san francisco this week, climate change a top issue on most platforms. but many green activists are pushing for a presidential debate devoted exclusively to climate change. >> there is plenty of voters that are really disengaged not paying attention and climate change is a central issue to all of us young people. >> east bay congresswoman barbara lee supports the idea. >> we also have to have the climate change debate because it cuts across every single issue. >> reporter: party chairman tom perez initially shot down the move arguing it would only allow other single issue debates. >> we want to make sure we don't change the rules in the middle of the process. >> reporter: but under pressure from activist, perez allowed a vote and called on members for

comment. >> we need to take this issue seriously. we need to get a bunch of candidates who have all asked for a climate debate on stage together to have a conversation. >> reporter: others said there are too many other important issues to discuss. >> i don't need a specific focus climate debate in -- at the expense of a debate that i would also want on immigration. >> reporter: in the end, party members rejected a resolution to hold the climate change debate. >> reporter: activists stormed out of the room and onto the street. >> failure of leadership! failure of leadership! >> reporter: the same proposal was voted down earlier this week. many say they will keep trying. now republicans have been watching the meeting from afar this week, and they issued this statement. it's only appropriate the democrats chose san francisco as the home to some of the most destructive progresive policies in the nation. this is the perfect opportunity for voters to see what they would be getting into with a kamala harris, bernie sanders or

elizabeth warren presidency. we're live in san francisco, cornell barnard, abc 7 news. thank you very much. overseas now to the g-7 in france. president trump and world leaders are meeting this weekend in the wake of an unstable world economy. abc news reporter rachel scott has the latest. >> it's a meeting between the u.s. and our most important allies, world leaders arriving in france preparing to tackle a number of key issues including brexit and global trade at this year's g-7 summit. >> i'm very worried about the way it's going, the growth of o protections. >> newly elected british prime minister boris johnson's first visit to the summit. this pullout expected to have a big impact on an already teetering global economy. stock markets have been on edge since president trump and chinese president xi upped the ante in the trade war. >> if you look at november 9th the day after the election,

lake golf club during the 2019 pga tour championship. all were hit by falling debris after lightning struck a tree. medics responded quickly and rushed them to local hospitals. play was suspended halfway through the round for the rest of the day. it will restart tomorrow. developing news on a wildfire burning near redding in shasta county. officials say the mountain fire is now 60% contained. progress from the last report yesterday of 40% containment. the fire has destroyed 14 buildings and charred 600 acres since it started thursday morning. two people were injured. the shasta college campus is closed and there is an evacuation center at cross point community church. in the north bay they are preparing for wildfires like that one. sonoma county held its first full scale evacuation drill this morning. neighbors in santa rosa who signed up for an alert practiced evacuating their homes and

driving through evacuation routes. the american red cross handed out information and answered questions on disaster preparedness. sonoma county is identifying other high priority areas and plans to work on those community on more evacuation exercises. for the second time in less than a week a person died in a hit and run incident in san jose. the latest happened just after 3:30 this morning on santa theresa boulevard and st. ignace owe avenue. a man in a dodge ram laramie pickup truck hit a car at the intersection. that driver died. the driver of the pickup ran from the scene, and police are continuing to search for him. they're also looking for the driver who hit and killed a man in downtown san jose this past thursday morning. he died at the intersection of east san fernando and 4th streets just outside a library on the san jose state campus. in developing news, nearly 13,000 santa clara county workers have voted ahoke. our media partner the mercury news reports votes were counted last night. the union has not yet called for a strike. members was a 12.5% pay raise

over five years. people rallied this afternoon in support of an 87-year-old man who escaped the holocaust and is now facing eviction. abc 7 news was in alameda michael rishen held the hands of supporters and neighbors at the rally on shoreline drive. he's lived there since 2002 and says his section 8 status is this not protecting him from the rising cost of living, and his landlord wants to raise the rent by $700 a month. housing advocates plan to fight the rent hike on rishen's behalf. >> the fact is they get 31,000 a year for mr. rishen's apartment. they are not going broke. they are not given free rent to somebody who is sick. >> rishen recently lost his son to cancer. ma . one of the issues abc 7 news focuses on in the effort to built a better bay area is the housing crisis. today teams of volunteers built

a hiking spot is off limits this week because of mountain lion sightings. the family of cougars were recently caught on camera walking along a trail at the rancho san antonio open space preserve in santa clara county. fish and wildlife says they are trying to lure the cougars further into the preserve and use humane measures to keep mountain lions from coming close to people. the open space preserve is south

of las altos hills. donors have increased the reward to $5,000 in the case of animal abuse out of salinas. the spca of monterey county says someone attached a clip through the skin of a husky and chained the animal to chunks of concrete. it's a metal loop connector commonly used to hooking onto harnesses. the clip had likely been attached to the young dog for more than ten days. the dog named neil is expected to make a full recovery. b.a.r.t. riders in contra costa county are facing delays. b.a.r.t. says that is causing 30-minute delays. tomorrow riders can expect delays in san francisco because trains will be single tracking between the embarcadero and 24th street mission station. crews are performing equipment upgrades. san francisco welcomed an historic yacht with an all woman crew to its ports today. the yacht named the maiden is traveling around the world to raise money and awareness for girls' education. they stopped at the st. francis

laundering and identify theft. many of the victims are elderly women. investigators announced the arrest thursday and say there are 32 victims from all across the world. the u.s. attorney says 11 of the suspects were arrested in los angeles. >> at the center of the indictment our operatives here in los angeles who facilitated the fraud schemes by opening u.s. bank accounts where victims were directed to deposit their money. >> among the cases detailed in the indictment, an 81-year-old woman who thought she met an oil rig worker in belgium on facebook. in reality, she was a scammer who bilked her out of in the east bay, a delightful combination of colorful chalk art and chocolate made for a fun day. abc 7 news was in berkeley's gourmet ghetto for the 21st annual chocolate and chalk art festival. the event brought together

pablo sandoval hasn't played in a game for the giants since august 9th and unfortunately his last game was on that day. sandoval will undergo tommy johns century surgery in septem. he was placed on the injury list august 15th with right elbow inflammati inflammation. >> it is tough for me because i want to keep playing. i want to help this team, and especially right now we're in this race, and you know, i don't want to get out, but at the same time things happen for a reason. >> the giants are coming off a three-game sweep of the chicago cubs. they lost that is, and they lost four in a row. the a a's are 6-1 in this huge home stand. they're back to the bay bridge series. >> when it gets to this time of the year, you know, you can see the -- kind of the end in sight
