i'm in san francisco where gearing has been taped off for hours. it was a nice start to the weekend. but high pressure is building off our coast line, and we are tracking a warmer afternoon for your sunday. we'll have the details coming up with the forecast. i'm in santa rosa where there is a new program in place designed to help neighbors after the devastating wildfires. abc7 news starts right now. >> now news to build a better bay area from abc7. >> tonight we're learning new details about a collision that blocked geary boulevard for hours in san francisco. according to police an unmarked police car hit an officer and a burglary suspect. good evening. thanks for joining us. i'm eric thomas. >> and i'm deanne limb. that happened at the intersection of geary boulevard

and webster streak. luz pena was there. >> reporter: that's right. we are still learning more details. according to san francisco police, all started around 5:20 p.m. when one suspect was arrested and another fled the area. plain closes officers called for additional backup, and that's when the chase began down geary boulevard. a man can be seen laying on the ground behind an undercover police vehicle. according to the witness a man was being chased by two other police officers moments earlier. san francisco police confirmed this information. >> they were chasing two auto burglary suspects. during that time they called for additional units. at that time an unmarked police reporter: according to sfpd, a plain closes officer was chasing the suspect on foot before they were both struck by an unmarked vehicle on geary

boulevard. >> that vehicle struck a police officer and the suspect. those two were taken to the hospital. the suspect was in life-threatening condition. and the officer is in nonlife-threatening condition. collision, the unmarked police car was removed from the scene with a smashed hood. >> now geary boulevard is a well-known area for car break-ins in san francisco. but it's still unknown if the suspect was caught committing a crime prior to the chase. in the newsroom, abc7 news. neighbors helping neighbors. that's the message the city of santa rosa is stressing tonight after the devastating north b fires, a new program pushes people towards each other in case of an emergency. here's abc7 news reporter lisa. >> reporter: they share smiles, stories, and experiences at neighbor fest in santa rosa's historic ridgway neighborhood. many are meeting for the first

time. a new program is pushing them to get to know one another for their own safety. >> the tubbs fire was a disaster in itself. it was an event that no one ever wanted to go through. but something like that really showed the porimportance of neighbors helping neighbors. >> reporter: it swept through the area in october 2017. many lessons were learned and now they are being taught in the neighborhoods. >> and teaching them that there are multiple ways out of their neighborhoods. >> reporter: evacuation routes and emergency preparedness are also top of mind here. >> mostly we bank on the church here. because we have supplies there already. >> reporter: still neighbors becoming friends is what really matters and makes this life-saving program work. chris corsi was mayor during the north bay fires. >> neighboring helps neighbors, neighbors helping strangers. what we're trying to do is to create a community where people think about that all the time. not just after a disaster. >> reporter: and so people

listened to music. ♪ eat and play together. >> to me it feels really great inside my heart to know that i have neighbors looking out for each other. >> reporter: that can only happen once neighbors stop being strangers. in santa rosa, lisa. now head of tonight's event, sonoma county held its first full scale evacuation drill this morning. neighbors who signed up for an alert practiced evacuating their homes. the american red cross handed out information and answered questions on disaster preparedness. sonoma county is identifying other high-priority areas and plans to work with those communies evacuation exercises. the search is on for whoever shot a motorist along highway 4 in antioch. this could be a case of road rage. the gunshot went outside of the victim's car. neither he nor his passenger was

hurt. the driver wants to stay anonymous, but shared a terrifying account of what he saw when the gunman began chasing him on highway 4. >> first thing i see is he's driving one-handed with a gun. i can see the gun aimed at me. and i just sped up and weaved and i heard the shot. >> he says the suspect's car was a newer model silver mercedes sedan with two young men inside. he said the gunman looked like he wanted to take another shot at him before he sped away and called 9-1-1. for the second time in less than a week, a person died in a hit-and-run incident in san jose. it happened this morning at 3:30. a man in a dodge ram laramie pickup truck hit a car at the intersection and that driver died. the driver of the pickup truck ran from the scene. police continue to search for him. they are also looking for the driver who hit and killed a man in downtown san jose this past thursday morning. he died at the intersection of east san fernando and fourth

streets just outside a library on san jose saint university's campus. the democratic national committee's summer meeting has officially wrapped up in san francisco. >> the pool of candidates is now down to 21, many of them made an appearance this weekend. but today's hot topic was a debate that won't be happening. here's abc7 news reporter cornell bernard. >> reporter: democratic candidates running for president made stops at the dnc's summer meeting in san francisco this week. climate change a top issue on most platforms. >> the whole world is watching! >> reporter: but many green activists are pushing for a presidential debate devoted exhusively to climate change. >> there is plenty of voters that are really disengaged not paying attention, and climate change is a central issue to all of us young people. >> reporter: barbara lee supports the idea. >> we also have to have the pcuts across every single issue. >> reporter: tom perez arguing

the home to some of the most destructive progressive policies in the nation including higher taxes and government over-regulation. this is the perfect opportunity for voters to see what they would be getting into with a kamala harris, bernie sanders, or elizabeth warren presidency. people rallied this afternoon in support of an 87-year-old man who escaped the holocaust and is now facing eviction. abc7 news was in alameda where michael rishen held the hands of supporters and neighbors in front of the dune apartments. he's lived there since 2002, and he says his section 8 status is not protecting him from the rising cost of living. and his landlord wants to raise the rent by $700 a month. housing advocates plan to fight the rent hike on his behalf. >> the fact is they get 31,000 a year for his apartment. they are not going broke. they are not giving free rent to somebody who's sick. >> he recently lost his son to

for the fifth straight year, oakland school kids who love video games are learning how to design their own. it's the annual game heads training program that teaches the teens video game design and

development. the kids are building a better bay area with their games, shining a light on the issues that matter most to them. >> born and raised in oakland. >> this year's participants are especially excited about that born in oakland part. 60 kids train in the fundamentals from january to june. >> from june to august, they have about 13 weeks to get into development teams and build a video game from scratch. >> this summer, participants designed and created 11 games with their own graphics, animation, and sound. these young men designed a drifting game based on real life automobile side shows with that special oakland flavor. >> so we wanted to show all the asthesices of oakland. >> this all-female team took a decidedly different tac moving their game from the road into the home. >> it really means thank you, mom, which is kind of what the game is about. a love letter to all our mothers. >> well, the ultimate love

letter to mom may be the game design and critical thinking skills to help these kids into and graduate from college. as part of building a better bay area, we are also focused on homelessness and possible solutions to the housing crisis. today people built moveable tiny homes for homeless young people. volunteers are spending this weekend building 8 x 10 foot tiny homes. they are easy to move so they can be set up wherever the need. >> these may end up in a village of 26 in a church parking lot in oakland or berkeley. they may end up on a developer's land that is waiting to be developed in a two to three-year cycle. or they may be put on a piece of property that the city of oakland owns. >> volunteers will spend another weekend next month finishing these tiny homes. th goal is to have a dozen ready by next month. and we do want to hear your idas about building a better bay area. you can share them by joining our building a better bay area

group on facebook. san francisco welcomed an historic yacht with an all-woman crew to its ports today. the yacht named the maiden is traveling around the world to raise money and awareness for girls' education. they stopped at the st. francis yacht club to share their message. the first club was faced in 1989 and faced a lot of resistance from other sailors. this crew travels abroad in egypt, sri lanka, australia, and hawaii. the trip will take three years to complete. ♪ over in east bay, a delightful combination of colorful chalk art and chocolate made for a fun day. abc7 new what's in berkeley's gourmet ghetto for the 21st annual chocolate and chalk art festival. it brought together artists and chocolateiers for a very unique combination. >> you could see blue skies, you could also see fog depending on

where you were in the bay area. >> things are heating up for tomorrow. >> we are going to find warmer temperatures tomorrow afternoon. but tonight some of that fog is turning dense in spots. live doppler is showing you that fog is slowly creeping in from the coast. right now we'll zoom on into half moon bay. you are looking at visibility. when the numbers drop below one mile, that's when you have dense fog. and that's what we have in half moon bay. visibility down to three-quarters of a mile right now. you will likely encounter pockets of dense fog tomorrow morning close to the coast. this is a very foggy shot right now across parts of the east bay as some of that low cloud cover begins to move into your neighborhood. so as you take a look, over the next couple of days what we are tracking first in the near term is those areas of dense fog close to the coast and along with some coastal drizzle. however, our marine layer, it is shrinking. it's getting compressed by high pressure. that will lead to a quicker

clearing of the cloud cover first thing tomorrow morning and a warmer afternoon tomorrow as well. mid-week we'll increase the hmidity. we felt it last week. remember that humid air? it's coming back again next week. we will show you when in just one second. numbers now are down to 57. but where that marine influence has yet to move in like livermore and brentwood right now, we are still pretty mild holding in the 70s. overnight tonight we will continue to track that cloud cover close to the coast. numbers overnight dropping into the mid-50s close to the water, mid-60s in our warmest spots overnight tonight. so live doppler 7, the story we are tracking, there is this big ridge of high pressure right off our coast line. this strengthening over the next 24 hours. and that will supply the warmer weather to finish out the weekend. but it'll also compress our marine layer. 7:00 in the morning tomorrow, patchy fog. but watch how quickly it gets out of here. we will pull that cloud cover back to the coast before

live where you live, this is abc7 news. >> good evening. thanks for joining us. i'm eric thomas. >> in tonight's headlines now, abc7 news is learning new details about a collision that blocked traffic for hours in san francisco today. police tell us an unmarked police car hit an officer and auto burglary subject at about 5:20 tonight. at last check the suspect was in life-threatening condition. the officer is expected to be okay. neighbors in santa rosa's ridgway historic neighborhood held a block party for fire preparedness today. they gathered to take part in a new program where neighbors learned about evacuation plans and other emergency practices. the program was inspired by the north bay fires. the final day of the dnc's summer meeting in san francisco

got heated over climate change. the dnc rejected a move today to allow the party's presidential candidates to hold a debate exclusively on climate change. party members said there were too many other important issues. spectators and professional golfers were forced to take cover in atlanta today when an intense line of thunderstorms developed over a golf course. >> in the midst of the chaos, lightning struck a tree and six people were hurt. here's abc7's karina mitchell. >> felt a little bit of little structure and then lightning struck. it was probably about 200 yards away. >> reporter: a terrifying scene east of downtown atlanta in the middle of the pga tour finale. lightning striking a 60-foot pine tree just off the 16th tee during a rain delay. six people including a child were hurt, hit by flying debris all expected to be okay. witnesses described the

frightening moments. >> everyone just basically dropped to the floor because it was the closest lightning i've ever heard in my entire life. people started rushing but the stairs were aluminum, so you didn't want to stand on there too long. >> reporter: ambulances immediately responded to the private club where 30 pga golfers are competing for the fedex cup and its $15 million prize. the athletes already inside the clubhouse when the lightning hit. >> the players thought they were going to get back out onto the golf course at some point, but eventually the pga tour decided we're done for the day. >> reporter: the pga suspended play for the rest of the day. it'll pick back up on sunday followed by the final round. this is the second lightning strike in two weeks connected to the world of professional golf. last week at the bmw championship outside of chicago, phil mickelson was delayed when lightning struck the top of his hotel. >> that's some scary stuff. >> it is, but don't worry,

nothing like that around here. you might have to worry about a little heat headed our way though. here's drew tuma with the weather. >> thunderstorms in georgia very common this time of the year. however, when those lightning storms move through, nowhere outside is safe. if you do find yourself in one of those storms, your best bet, get inside a structure. if you can't find a building to get indoors into, your car is your next best bet. however, you never want to be under a tree or in a ball field. sports this time of the year, if you hear thunder you want to go indoors. you don't have to be close to the storm. it can strike 15 miles away. nowhere outside of state and you want to wait 30 minutes after the storm moves through because 27 deaths a year are associated with lightning strikes here in the u.s. we'll take a closer look at our w we'll hear about the heat tomorrow in just a few minutes, guys. president trump and the first lady are in france this weekend for a major meeting of world leaders, the g-7 summit. the meeting is taking place against a backdrop of intensifying economic and

political turbulence. the president is escalating his trade war with china threatening new tariffs. that sent the stock market tumbling. in france the president also threatened new tariffs on the french as well. >> i don't want france going out and taxing our companies. it's very unfair. if they do that, we will be taxing their wine or doing something else. >> this year's summit is the first for new british prime minister boris johnson. with the u.k. just two month as way from pulling out of the european union. world leaders are also being tasked on the environmental amazon raging out of control. tonight a texas community is t loss of a newlywed couple killed in a crash just minutes after tying the knot. 19-year-old harley morgan and 20-year-old r anon lost their lives friday afternoon. they were leaving the justice of the peace when they pulled onto highway 87 and collided with a pickup truck towing a tractor. harley's mother was less than 100 feet away when she watched

her son and new daughter-in-law die. i watched my baby die. i was trying my best to rip him and her out of the car. >> it is hard to listen to. the justice of the peace who performed the wedding also served as the coroner. police are investigating. brazil's military is joining the fight against fires sweeping across parts of the amazon. 44,000 troops have been deployed along with military water-dropping aircraft. the move by the brazilian government follows an international outcry. the fires have been burning for weeks, widespread and out of control. it's not clear whether those troops will be doing fire-fighting duties on the front lines. in the east bay, police spent the day teaching people about the dangers of drinking and driving. >> abc7 news was in concord for the know your limit program. officers spent time at taco fest showing people how little alcohol it takes to reach the legal limit. they invited volunteers to take

a breathalyzer test to see if they can guess their blood alcohol content. in california the legal limit is .08%. a person's limit varies drastically based on weight, time, and the type of drink. >> we were just offering this so that people can see if they consume some alcohol where they would rate in that scale. >> the average cost of a dui is around $13,500. that includes impound fees, fines, attorneys' fees and insurance hikes. california wildlife officials are asking people not to keep neutria as pets. the orange-toothed rodents may soon be added to the list of prohibited pets in the state. their burrowing causes damage to waterways, the semi aquatic animals can also birth up to 12 in a litter. they were imported from south america in the early 1900s for the fur trade before that market collapsed. disney is dropping all sorts of teasers for upcoming movies at its d-23 convention this

evaluated for heat-related symptoms. that fire started yesterday afternoon and flames spread to a garage and property next door. fire fighters say the mobile home along with vehicles, boats, and other items were badly damaged. donors have increased the reward to $5,000 in the case of animal abuse out of salinas. the spca from monterey county said someone attached a caribener to an animal. it is a metal loop connecter commonly used for connecting to harnesses. the dog now named neal is expected to make a full recovery. san mateo's ban on policy t phones up all day. one weekend, and the feedback from teachers and even some students seems to be positive. we are told bathroom breaks have dropped from 20 minutes to two

least one wild animal a week. >> he's come back with some pretty big wounds from fighting something, we're not sure. i've taken him to the vet several times. he does not back down. i know that. >> the family says gray kitty does not meow. he growls, and that could be what's scaring the coyotes away. >> i am scared of gray kitty. in the south bay a hiking spot is off limits this weekend because of mountain lion sightings. the family of cougars were recently caught on camera walking along a trail at the rancho san antonio open space preserve in santa clanta county. fish and wildlife says they are trying to lure the cougars further into the preserves and use humane measures to keep them from coming close to people. the preserve is south of los altos hills. it is unknown when the recreation area will reopen. >> piece of advice, mountain lions, stay out of gray kitty's backyard. we're watching our fog tonight thicken, especially close to the coast where we do

have some dense spots right now. live doppler along with satellite we'll go down to half moon bay, visibility right now is down to half a mile. so that is some dense cloud cover close to the coast. some coastal drizzle, mid-50s to mid-60s overnight tonight. then as we get into your sunday, we will see any cloud cover move back to the coast pretty quick in the morning. that means it's a warmer afternoon. you see our hottest spots in the mid-90s. 80 in oakland, 72 in san francisco. and napa up to about 90 degrees. just a quick check on the tropics. we still have tropical storm iva. winds right now 40 miles per hour. this storm is really going to fall apart. but as it moves north, we are going to get some of its moisture in the form of increased humidity coming mid-week. warmer tomorrow, hot on monday. then we will start to see that humidity on the rise before drier air moves in here to finish out theor what else to say, but it's hot and humid. >> there you go.
