good morning, it's sunday august 25th. i'm kumasi aaron. let's start with the weather. here is meteorologist lisa argen. >> good morning, mist and drizzle at the coast, clear inland. live doppler 7 shows you half mile visibility at the shoreline. as you cross the bay, it's a little bit better but not totally as you get over into oakland and emeryville. temperatures are ranging from the cool 50s to the north, to the 60s to the east. goitsing it a it's going to be a warmer day except at beaches.

walnut creek nice and sunny. numbers are climbing through the 60s and 70s by the mid-morning hours. by about noontime we're already in the mid-80s around danville, walnut creek and around fremont we're in the mid-70s. by the afternoon, though, by 3:00, 4:00 when we reach our highs, we'll be well into the 90s. this heat stays around for monday. we'll talk about cloud cover, humidity and a cooldown in the seven-day outlook. kumasi. >> thanks, lisa. developing news this morning, it turns out los angeles county sheriff's deputy who claimed a nighter shop him in the parking lot lied about the i want. police say the deputy in training at the lancaster station said he had been shot in the shoulder of his vest. but 20-year-old angel reynosa made this whole thing up. he admitted he wasn't shot. >> he told investigators

had caused the holes in the uniform shirt by cutting it with a knife. there was no sniper, no shots fired and no gunshot injuries to the shoulder. completely fabricated. attory' be responsible for filing charges against him. this morning we're learning about a crash in san francisco that blocked geary boulevard for hours. police say an unmarked police car hit an officer and burglary suspect near japantown. abc news reporter liz pena has the details. >> reporter: in this video shot by a witness, a man can be seen lying on the ground underneath a police vehicle. according to witnesses a man was chased by two other police officers earlier. san francisco police confirmed this information. >> they were facing two auto burglary suspects. during that time, they called for additional units. at that time an unmarked police

car arrived on the scene. >> reporter: korld to sffd a plain clothed officer was chasing him on foot. >> that vehicle struck a police officer and the suspect. those two were taken to the hospital. the suspect was in life threatening condition and the officer is nonlife threatening condition. >> hours after the collision the unmarked police car was removed from the scene with a smashed hood. >> now geary boulevard is a well-known area for came break-ins in san francisco. it's still not know if the suspect was committing a crime before the chase. in the newsroom, liz pena, abc 7 news. the search is on for whoever shot at a motor along highway 4 in antioch yesterday afternoon. authorities say it could be a case of road rage. ceer valley . neither he nor his passenger was hurt. the driver wanted to stay

anonymous but shared a terrifying account of what he saw when the gunman began chasing him on highway 4. >> first thing i could say was he was driving one-handed with a gun. i could see the gun aiming at me. i sped up and weaved and heard a shot. >> he said the suspect's car was a newer model silver mercedes sedan with two young men. it looked like he wanted to take take another shot at him before he sped away and called 911. for the second time in less than a week, a person died in a hit-and-run incident in san jose. the latest at 3:30 on santa teresa boulevard and san inacio. a man hit a car at the intersection. that driver died. the driver of the pickup truck rap from the scene and police are still searching for driver who h andilled a man in downtown san jo dd he intersectn san feron 4o

jose's university campus. the democratic natficially u san francisco. the pool of candidates is now down to 21. many of them made an appearance this weekend but yesterday's hot topic was a debate that won't be happening. here is abc 7 news reporter cornell barnard. >> democratic candidates running for president made stops at the dnc summer meeting in san francisco. climate change a top issue on most platforms. many green activists pushing for a presidential debate devoted exclusively to climbed change. >> there are plenty of voters disengaged, not paying attention. climate change is a central issue to young people. >> barbara lee supports the idea. >> we have to have the climate debate because it cuts across every single issue. >> party chairman tom perez arguing it would only allow

neighbors helping neighbors. that's the message of the city of santa rosa is stressing. there is a program pushing people towards each other in case of an emergency. lisa amin gulezian has the story. >> they share smiles, stories, and experiences at neighborfest at santa rosa's historic ridge land neighborhood. many are meeting for the first time. a new program is pushing them to get to know one another for their own safety. >> t t in itself. it was an event no one ever wanted to go through. something like that really showed the importance of neighbors helping neighbors. >> the north bay fire swept through the area in october 2017. many lessons were learned and now they are being taught in the neighborhoods. >> teaching them there's multiple ways out of the neighborhood and what run streets are. >> reporter: evacuation routes and emergency preparedness are top of mind here.

american red cross answered questions on disaster prep. sonoma county is identifying high priority areas and plans to work with those communities on more evacuation kperps. exercises. in the east bay the city of berkeley will hold its third wildfire evacuation drill today. the hour long trill will start at 9:00 near uc berkeley and the berkeley contra costa border area. alerts will be sent out, field teams will go door to door and police will sound an evacuation siren over a loud speaker. you can take part in the drill, you just have to sign up for the city's ac alert for directions. for the fifth straight year oakland school kids who love video games are learning how to design their own. it's the annual game heads program that teaches the kids video game design and development. the kids are building a better bay area with games shining a light on the issues that matter most to them. abc 7 news anchor eric thomas has more. >> born and raised in oakley. >> this year's game participants are especially excited about that born in oakland part.

60 kids train in fundamentals from january to june. >> from june to august they have about 13 weeks to get development teams and build a video game from scratch. >> this summer they designed and created 11 games with their own graphics, animation and sound. these young men designed on drifted games based on real life automobile side shows with that special oakland flavor. >> we wanted to show all the aesthetics of oakland as far as the smoke, fireworks of side shows. >> this all female team took a decidedly different tack moving their game from the road into the home. >> it really means -- it's what the game is about, a love letter to all our mothers. >> eric thomas, abc 7 news. the ultimate love letter to mom may be the game design and critical thinking that game heads will provide to help these kids sbet into aget into and gr

college. as part of building a better bay area, we're focused on homelessness and possible solutions to the housing crisis. yesterday people built movable tiny homes for homeless young people. the volunteers are spending this weekend building 8 x 10 foot tiny homes. they are easy to move so they can be set up wherever they are needed. >> these may end up in a village of 26 in a church parking lot in oakland or berkeley. they may end up on a developer's land that's waiting to be developed in a two- or three-year cycle or put on a piece of property that the city of oakland owns. >> volunteers will spend another weekend next month finishing the tiny homes. the goal is to have a dozen of them ready by next month. we want to hear your ideas about building a better bay area. you can share them by joining our building a better bay area group on facebook. the high school just implemented a new policy to lock students phones up all day long. one weekend and the feedback

from teachers and even students seems to be positive. we're told bathroom breaks have dropped from 20 minutes to 2 or 3 minutes. while the policy does prevent students from getting distracted in class, it let's students be themselves because they are not afraid of being recorded. this may be the most powerful, social, emotional health kind of thing we do as a district, right, is to get kids off their phone. >> the phones and e-mails have been buzzing all week. we're trying to be as timely as we can to support other schools that might be interested in doing something like this. >> now, the only downside, if you want to call it that, is there's more noise in the hallways now. that's because students say they are actually talking to each other instead of just staring at their phones. happening today, thousands of people will hit the streets of san francisco for america's moth beautiful run. this is the annual bridge to bridge run. both the 5k and 12k start at 8:00 this morning in front of the ferry building. the runners will pass through fisherman's wharf and ghirardelli square.

certainly a view of the day where it is just a gorgeous shot out there with the low cloud deck allowing for that shallower deck of clouds to bring dense fog at the coast. notice it's not call, compressed due to the high pressure built in overnight. that's what's allowing for such a gorgeous view. 65 petaluma, 64, westerlily wind and sea breeze. look at the visibility anywhere from a mile to 3 miles in santa rosa. napa getting better but this is where the edge of the fog is right around here encompassing oakland but it retreats quickly. our exploratorium camera, you can see how gray it is here. certainly a cool view for you. looking at coastal fog and meigs. warmer temperatures above average today and tomorrow and with some clouds building throughout the afternoon we'll look for partly cloudy conditions andum b the en of the week but by the middle of the week we could see more of that mist and drizzle

and humidity from the 50% dew point range to 60s. so you're going to feel the difference. we're warm the next 48 hours. here we are on tuesday still kind of warm inland but we've got the sea breeze back. that's allowing for comfortable readings, although it should be a little bit stickier around here come tuesday. here is wednesday, just around 90 in concord. that's average. the numbers keep continuing to slide a bit. notice the yellow almost across the entire bay so that's why we're looking at the cooler weather. as we go through the next 24 hours, notice the clouds by the afternoon tomorrow. the heat index will continue into the evening hours. this is from that system that right now is all the way down parallel to baja and adding mist and drizzle into the mix as well. we're looking at numbers today warmer. how much warmer, at least 5 degrees inland, concord, 95 livermore, san jose 90 as well as napa, san rafael, 80 in

closer to the coast. it is 62 redwood city, 63 in san jose with upper 50s. about one mile visibility at the shoreline. here is san jose 101, a few clouds around mid-50s santa rosa, 60s concord, livermore. while we have some mild readings inland, look at this, the golden gate bridge, that dense fog and wipers are needed. as we go through the morning hours, we're clearing out 60s coast side noontime mid-70s to mid-80s around the bay and inland. will be about 5 to 7 degrees warmer, inland valleys. maybe 4 degrees warmer around the bay. lasts through monday. kumasi. >> thanks, lisa. suspects and professional golfers forced to take cover in atlanta when an intense line of thunderstorms over the course. in the midst of the chaos, lightning struck a tree and six people got hurt. abc's corina mitchell has more.

>> felt pressure, lightning struck, probably about 100 miles away. >> a terrifying scene in the middle of atlanta in the middle of the pga tour finale. lightning striking a 60 foot pine tree oft 16th tee during the third round of the championship. 16 people, including a child, were hurt hit by flying debris. all expected to be okay. witnesses described the frightening moments. >> everyone dropped to the floor because it was the closest lightning i had ever seen in my life. at that point people started rushing into the fan shop but the stairs were aluminum so you didn't want to stand on there too long. >> reporter: ambulances immediately responded where 30 pga golfers were dpeegt for the cup and it's $15 million prize. the athletes already inside the clubhouse when the lightning hit. >> the players thought they were going to get back out onto the golf course at some point. eventually pga tour decided, no, done for the day. too much dangerous weather in

the area. >> pga suspended play for the rest of the day. it will pick up sunday followed by the final round. this the second lightning strike in two weeks connected to the world of professional golf. last week at the bmw championship outside of chicago phil mickelson was delayed when lightning struck the top of his hotel. corina mitchell, abc 7 news new york city. president trump says he's not facing pressure from his allies over the trade war in china. at the grand prix -- group of 7 in france, he held the first face-to-face meeting with boris johns as the new prime minister. johnson says his country wants to see free trade and doesn't like tariffs. the president says he has a right to declare a national emergency to force u.s. businesses to leave china but doesn't have plans at the moment. >> when they steal, intellectual property theft, anywhere from $3 we have a total loss of almost a trillion dollars a year.

for many years this has been going on. we're getting along very well with china right now. we're talking. >> the president says he has no concerns about the market's reactions to his tariffs on china. brazil's miller joining the fight against the fire sweeping across the amazon. 40,000 troops deployed along with military water dropping aircraft. the move by the brazilian government follows an international outcry. fires have been burning widespread and out of control. it's unclear whether troops will be doing firefighting duties on the front lines. in the east bay police spent day teaching people about dangers of drinking and driving. yesterday abc 7 news was in concord with know your limit program. officers spent time at tacofest showing people how little alcohol it takes to reach the limit. they invited volunteers to take a breathalyzer to see if they can guess their blood alcohol content. in california the limit is .8%.

a person's limit can vary drastically based on weight, time, the type of drink. >> we're just offering this so people can see if they consumed some alcohol where they would rate in that scale. the average cost of a dui is around $13,500. that accounts for impound fees, fines, attorneys fees and insurance hikes. california wildlife officials are asking people not to keep nutria as pets. these orange tooth rodents may soon be added to the list of prohibited pets in the state. burrowing causes damage to waterways and the semiaquatic animals can birth up to 12 in a litter. they were imported from south america in the early 1900s for fur trade before that market collapsed. a cat in suburban l.a. is getting a reputation for scaring off predators. check it out. this is gray kitty. he make look cute and cuddly but look at this video. we see a whole other side of

gray kitty. so security cameras captured this confidentation between gray kitty and a coyote last week. he was adopted by a family but clearly prefers being outdoors. his family says he fights off at least one animal a week. >> he's come back with some pretty big wounds from fighting something. we're not sure. i've taken him to the vet several times. he does not back down, i know that. >> right? the family says gray kitty doesn't meow, he growls. that could be -- i'm reading slow because i want to see this video again. that could be what's scaring the coyotes away. they are like what in the world is that. a new landmark at the san franciso presidio. for the time being you might be forgiven if you mistook it for a massive mountain of dirt. what will it become? a world-class experience. abc anchor dan ashley has the details.

>> reporter: crews were moving mountains in san francisco's presidio. 50,000 cubic yards of soil that will be the foothold for one of the most unique destinations anywhere in the bay area. half park, half freeway, and this incredible new park, panoramic views of the downtown skyline, golden gate bridge, places you can bring your family to have picnics. development director for the presidio trust. several weeks ago he showed abc 7 news the planned path of a new wildlife watershed and boardwalk trail that will run under doyle drive. that was only the bottom half of the plan. the top part, 14 acres of park perched on top of doyle drive tunnels, the same tunnels thousands of commuters pass through every day from marin county and western san francisco. >> for 75 years doyle drive broke the presidio in two, cut
