clearing but the fog is close to the ground. so we have some dense pockets. 74 already by the delta. the disappearing act going on in the city today, a warmer day for everyone. details and how long it lasts coming up. >> nks thanks lisa. breaking news out of the maryland. a gas explosion damaged several businesses caused power outages in columbia southwest of baltimore. check out these images. officials say firefighters responded to multiple reports of hissing sounds coming from a crack in the shopping center's parking lot. everybody got out okay. they are trying to determine the cause of the explosion. in developing news this morning, it turns out the los angeles county sheriff's deputy who claimed a sniper shot him in the sheriff's parking lot lied. he said he had been shot in the shoulder of his bulletproof vest while walking to his car on wednesday. parts of the area went on lockdown. helicopters were searching for a

gunman. late last night, officials say the 21-year-old officer made the entire story up and admitted he wasn't shot. >> he also told investigators that he had caused the holes in his uniform shirt by cutting it with a knife. there was no sniper, no shots fires and no gun shot injuries sustained to his shoulder. completely fabricated. >> reynoso didn't say why he made up the false claim. officials say he will be fired. the district attorney's office will be responsible for filing charges against him. this morning we are learning more about a crash in san francisco that blocked geary boulevard for hours. an unmarked police car hit an officer and a suspect. luiz pena has the details. >> reporter: in this video shot by a witness a man can be seen lying on the ground behind an

undercover police vehicle. according to witnesses, the man was being chased earlier. police confirmed this information. >> they were chasing two auto burglary suspects. during that time they called for additional units. at that time, an unmarked police car arrived on the scene. >> reporter: according to sfpd a plain clothed officer was chasing the suspect on foot before they were struck by an unmarked police vehicle on geary boulevard. >> those two were taken to the hospital. the suspect was in life threatening condition. and the officer is in non-life threatening condition. >> reporter: hours later the unmarked police car was removed from the scene with a smashed hood. geary boulevard is a well-known area for car break-ins in knn where the suspect was caught in the act before the

chase. authorities say a gun shot went through the outside of a victim's car as he drove along the free near deer valley road. neither he nor his passenger was hurt. the driver shared what he saw when the gunman began chasing him. >> he is driving one handed with a gun. i could see the gun aimed at me. i sped up and weaved and i heard the shot. >> it was a newer model silver mercedes sedan with two young men inside. the victim says the man looked like he wanted to take another shot at him before he sped away and called 911. the latest pedestrian hit and run happened yesterday. a man in a pickup truck hit a

car at an intersection and the passenger died. the driver of the pickup truck fled the scene. police are searching for him. they are also looking for the man whostan at et fernando ivty eeting as officially wrapped up in san francisco. the pool of candidates is now down to 21. many of them made an appearance this weekend. yesterday's hot topic was a debate that won't be happening. here's abc7 news reporter cornell barnard. >> reporter: democrats candidates running for president made stops at the dnc's summer meeting in san francisco, climate change a top issue on most platforms. >> the whole world is watching! >> reporter: many green activists are pushing for a presidential didn't devoted exclusively to climate change. >> there are plenty of voters

room and onto the street. cornell barnard, abc7 news. the republican national committee had this response to the dnc meeting, quote, it is only appropriate the democrats chose san francisco as a home to some of the most destructive progressive policies in the nation including higher taxes and government overregulation. this is the perfect opportunity for voters to see what they would be debting with the kamala harris, bernie sanders, or elizabeth warren presidency. new this morning, former illinois congressman joe walsh says he will challenge president trump for the 2020 republican nomination. >> i am running because he's unfit. somebody needs to step up. and there needs to be an alternative. the country is sick of this guy's tantrum. he's -- he's a child. >> walsh made the announcement in an exclusive interview on" this week with george stephanopoulos" in response to

walsh jumping into the race the communications director for the trump campaign told abc news, quote, whatever. walsh who was once a trump supporter has become a fierce critic of the president. he is just the second republican to jump into the primary behind former massachusetts governor bill weld. in the south bay the annual silicon valley pride festival and parade, in its 44th year dozens of groups are taking part inra. it starts at 10:00 at market and julian street and ends at see czar dechavez park. there will be two singers. macy gray is the headliner tonight. the festival runs until 5:00 and it is only $5 to get in. >> you were talking about a warmup. >> upper elevations at 1900 feet in the our east bay hills, a temperature reading of 87 degrees. yes. and it is just after 9:00. right now you can see the fog in the city.

neighbors helping neighbors. that's the message the city of santa rosa is stressing after the devastating north bay fires.

there is a new program that is pushing people toward each other in the case of an emergency. abc news has the story. >> reporter: they share smiles, stories, and experiences at neighbor fest in santa rosa's ridgewood historic neighborhood. >> hi. >> hi. >> reporter: many are meeting for the first time. a new pram is pushing them to get to know one another, for their own safety. >> the tubbs fire was a disaster in it is self. an event no one ever wanted to go through. but something like that really showed the importance of neighbors helping neighbors. >> reporter: the north bay fire swept through the area in october 2017. many lessons were learned and now they are teaching them in the neighborhoods. >> teaching them there are means ways out. >> reporter: evacuation routes are top of mine. >> the church has supplies. >> reporter: still, neighbors becoming friends is what really matters and makes the life

saving program work. chris coursey was mayor during the north bay fires. >> neighbors helping neighbors, neighbors helping strangers. what we are trying to do is to -- is to create a community where people think about that all the time not just after a disaster. >> i am your block captain. >> okay. >> reporter: people listen to music, eat, and play together. to. >> to me it feels great inside my heart to know i have neighbors look out for each other. >> reporter: that can only happen once neighbors stop being strangers n. santa rosa, abc7 news. >> ahead of the event sonoma county held its first full scale evacuation drill. neighbors who signed up practiced evacuating their homes and driving out of the down. american red cross handed out information on disaster prep. santa rosa plans to work with

communities on more evacuation exercises. in the east bay the city of baerkly is holding its third annual fire evacuation drill. it started at 9:00 this morning. alerts were being sent out. field teams are going door to door. and police are sounding an evacuation siren over a loud speaker. if you want to take part in future drills, sign up for the city's ac alert and they will send you over the directions. for the fifth straight year, oakland school kids who love video games are learning how to design their own. it is the annual gameheads training program that teaches kids video game design and development. abc7 news anchor eric thomas has more. >> reporter: born and raised in oakland. she's going to win. >> reporter: this year's gameheads participants are especially excited about the born in oakland part. 60 kids trained in the fundamentals from january to june. >> from june to august, they

looking nice and bright with 61 in san francisco. 67 in san jose. 68 in gilroy. 57 on the coast with mid 60s in redwood city. looking hazy here as we have the higher relative humidity but a nice looking view as we look at numbers in the upper 50s from santa rosa. 70s already in concord, livermore. 74xthe delta. 64 in petaluma. the visibility it has been near nothing along the coast. it is getting a bit better and you notice oakland at three miles. as the clouds get closer to the ground we have the more dense fog and shallow deck of clouds. we are seeing numbers climbing. three to five degrees warmer as we are underneath high pressure compressing the low cloud deck and allowing for the warmth to stay with us today and tomorrow. a beautiful view here from the city, where the fog is just dissipating. minute by minute here. it will be sunny pretty soon. temperatures climbing w. the sunshine we are looking at above normal temperatures today. tomorrow, and then looking at extra cloud cover, extra

humidity, and maybe even some precip headed our way as we head into tuesday. as we look at our numbers tuesday. it is warm inland n the upper 90s. but we are getting a better sea breeze. the heat is today and tomorrow. locally, the sea breeze saves us for tuesday around the bay into wednesday. we are cooler. and thursday notice that shade of yellow spreading into our inland valleys. as we look at the cloud cover throughout our monday forecast notice we have high clouds moving in throughout the afternoon, the evening. then we get into tuesday. not much strat us, the low clouds. but look at that, maybe even a little precip as the cloud cover moves up, that subtropical moisture could bring out a few areas of drizzle, mist, maybe a incumbent hundredths out there. that's for the middle of the week. inland. mid 90s in livermore. 72 downtown. lower 80s in palo alto.

you. like a watercolor out there from our east bay hills camera, this view with some moisture in the atmosphere. you can tell it is a little hazy there. we have sorm warmth already. 62 in san francisco. upper 60s in san jose. it has been sunny for a while. only 52 and fog in hmm bay. the peninsula mainly in the 80s today as the warmup takes hold today and tomorrow. in the 70s in the east bay hills. 74 in the delta. the wind is, abouting off. look at the golden gate, socked in. 60s, partly cloudy at the coast. in the middle of the afternoon we are in the 80s and in the 90s inland. and we are going to have about a two, two and a half day event of our inland heat above normal temperatures. i will explain when we come back and look at the last full week in august. spectators and professional goal offers were forced to take shelter in atlanta after an

44,000 troops have been deployed along with military water-dropping aircraft. the move by the government follows an international outcry. fires have been burn forth weeks now. they have been widespread and out of control. it is unclear whether those troops will be doing fire fighting duties on the front lines. in the east bay police spent the day teaching people about the dangers of drinking and driving. yesterday abc7 news was in concord for the know your limit program. officers spent time at taco fest showing people how little alcohol it takes to reach the legal limit. they invited volunteers to take a breathalizer test to see if they could guess their blood alcohol content. in california the limit is .08%. a percent's limit varies drastically based on weight, time, and the type of drink. >> they can see where they would rate in in a scale. >> the average cost of a dui,

happening today, volunteers will pick up trash at baker beach if san francisco. the surfrider foundation is celebrating its 35th birthday. it organizes clean ups and educational events throughout the year. its mission is to find creative ways to prevent plastic pollution from entering the beach and ocean.
