frustrated and looking for answers. >> cornell bernard is live for us on union street with a story you'll see only on abc7 news. cornell? >> dion, eric, it's been a tough summer for business owners on union street who fear break-ins are only getting worse here. >> it shouldn't happen. not in city. enough. eleanor carpenter says she has had it. a toy dog is good for a laugh outside her long-time union street store just jewels because needs more protection from steeves. >> it's out of control. >> she now has metal bars on the new ones. >> they got over there and they ran at the front door and threw their bodies and the alarm went off and scared them. >> thieves made another attempt to break in through her front window, but only cracked it. frustrating? >> maddening. not frustrating. maddening. the city has to do something besides:00 the garbage. >> merchants say there has been eight to nine break-ins in the

last several months, all of them happening during overnight hours. just in the last week, someone smashed the window of this clothes store, stealing cash and a few items. the pink bunny lingerie store was also hit. they came in. they stole the cash from the register. >> it's got more intense the last couple of weeks. >> farizan aman believes transients could be the cause. he shows this video clip of woman who throws a cup of coffee and knocks items off shelves. >> we were hoping the mayor can clean up the streets, but we're still waiting to see what happens. >> police tell merchants no suspects have been identified. but many want to see more patrols on union street overnight. >> you definitely do need some more patrolling around here. >> so far no response from sfpd, but merchants say they plan to increase patrols, especially at

night. we'll see what happens. cornell bernard, abc7 news. >> we'll keep following. thanks. new at 6:00, break-ins are not just a problem for businesses, but car owners as well. we often report on windows being smashed, but trend we saw a few years ago may be coming back. abc7 news reporter liz kreutz joins us from san francisco where she just spoke to a prius owner who says her car battery was stolen. litz? >> hi, dion. as a prius owner myself, this is something i hadn't thought about happening and neither had the owner of this prius. the break-in happened right here. the car has since been towed. we're on webster street near california. a pretty quiet residential street in pacific heights. take a look at these photos. this is what the car looked like after the break-in. totally disassembled. the battery cut out of the back seat. cut out of the car beneath the back seat. we met up with the owner marjorie who told us about it.

take a listen. just to get a sense of what it looked like when you walked out here. >> well, you know, you go looking for your car and you know what your car looks like. it didn't look like my car. it looked like a jalopy car. it looked different. it looked dishevelled. they took the seat out, cut all the wires, and removed the battery. which i understand weighs 180 pounds. >> yeah, it's not the easiest process to remove a prius battery. back in 2015 abc7 news news did some reports on this that this was quite a popular trend to steal prius batteries. they can be resold for up to a thousand dollars or more. marjorie did file a police report, but doesn't believe any of the surveillance cameras on the street got video of the break-in. so she isn't expecting much to come of it. her prius is currently in the shop, but she tells uses she is most likely going to get rid of it and start taking public

transportation instead. live here in san francisco, liz kreutz, abc7 news news. >> what an experience, liz. we appreciate it. thanks. the highway patrol is investigating a fatal head of on crash this morning on a two-lane road in eastern contra costa county. it all happened just before nine on balfour road near american avenue outside of brentwood. the driver of a silver nissan sedan slammed into a white van traveling in the opposite direction. another driver in a mini cooper was also struck by the nissan. >> the silver nissan was going eastbound behind me. at a high rate of speed, tried to pass me, hit me. swerved into the other lane and hit the toyota van head-on. >> the chp is investigating whether drugs or alcohol were factors in the crash. the driver of the white van was taken to the hospital with serious injuries. fairfield police busted a series of illegal sideshows that took part -- that happened in their city on friday night.

they did so with the help of a highway patrol helicopter. it was in the air capturing video of the donuts being spun near huntington drive and stanford court. police moved in to tow a couple of the cars involved. one person was arrested two. others were cited and officers administered field sobriety tests to the drivers. developing news here. a search is on for a missing man in indian slough. the coast guard got a report of a person missing in the water. they say the small inflatable crash cruz was in deflated. new developments with a wildfire burning north of redding in shasta county. all evacuation orders for the mountain fire have been lifted as of this morning. cal fire says containment is now at 80%, and it has kept the fire from growing since thursday. the flames acre, destroying a total of 14 buildings, seven of them homes. two people have minor injuries, and the cause of the fire is under investigation. man has been arrested for

sexual assault at the burning man site days before the popular counterculture event got under way. the chronicle reports the arrest happened on thursday. burning man officially opens today. the suspect is being held in the pershing county jail. investigators say the accuser gave a highly detailed description of what happened including the man's location. while today is the first official day, burning man participants tend to arrive weeks ahead to set up tents and to find camps. on the peninsula, a security boost at the port of redwood city. the port is receiving $1.8 million from the federal emergency management agency. the grant is the largest in northern california and fourth largest in the u.s. fema provides about $100 million in funding every year through their grant program. the port says the money will go toward upgrading cameras, lights, fencing, and other infrastructure. i ey, some lucky kids are ringing in the school year with brand-new backpacks. this is the 14th year bay area

violence that they'll hurt us. we aren't going to be intimidated. >> modesto police came prepared for the worst with protesters on both sides stayed peaceful. the straight pride parade was originally denied a permanent because organizers failed to secure insurance for the event. a downtown los angeles bar says they fired their security company and will put staff through training after a controversial incident where a group of trans women and a gay man were forcibly removed. take a look. the group says they were verbally threatened by a straight couple. when the staff at la perlas asked everyone to leave, security forcibly ejected the transgender woman and gay man. were not woman and they were going to come back and kill us and shoot us, it makes me fear for my life and for the rest of my coworkers. >> l.a. police are investigating the incident as a possible hate

crime. a group of coworkers who were at the bar celebrating the lgbtq community at the downtown festival. san francisco's ban on vaping products is getting heated and has led to a lawsuit. jul has backed a measure on the november ballot that would overturn the ban. supporters have filed a lawsuit challenging the language drafted by the city attorney. they say it's misleading. the city attorney's office is rejecting the claims. prop c would legalize the sale of vaping and e-cigarette products and introduce a way to reglate them. well, folks in livermore spent the day out at the park for a good purpose. >> we will head to an event that helps sends children with special needs to camp. and drew tuma is coming up next with your accuweather forecast. >> coming up in sports, giants and a's finish the bay bridge series. another close game in oakland, plus, the a's honor one of the
