4:02 am
trump says that negotiations are back on with china after china reached out last night to resume talks making this the latest turn in a complicated trade war. this morning, the trade war between the u.s. and china setting off ripples of uncertainty and sending stock markets around the globe tumbling. tensions escalated sharply between beijing and washington friday. ahead of the weekend's group of seven summit, surrounded by world leaders in france, president trump insisting he's not facing pressure from u.s. allies over the trade war. >> no, not at all. i haven't heard anything. i think they respect the trade war. it has to happen. >> reporter: but then trump making a rare admission signaling regret over his latest actions. >> president, any second thoughts on escalating the trade war with china? >> yeah, sure, why not. >> second thoughts? >> might as quickly pushing back insisting the president's remarks were misunderstood. >> again, he doesn't have second thoughts about what he's done.

if anything, he wanted to clarify if he had second thoughts, it would be to raise the tariffs. >> reporter: trump appears to be striking a more conciliatory tone towards the chinese dropping for now his threat on declaring an economic emergency to force u.s. companies out of china. >> i have great respect for the fact that china called. they want to make a deal. i have great respect. and i have great respect for president xi, and i think we're going to have a deal because now we're dealing on proper terms. they understand it and we understand it. >> reporter: the trade war with china is already hitting u.s. consumers even before the new tariffs were announced friday. jpmorgan estimated american families would pay an average of $1,000 a year more because of the higher tariffs on china. and earlier today chinese officials called for calm negotiations to resolve the trad tpossibly de-escalate the tit for tat tariff hikes. janai and kenneth. >> and, mona, the president saying it's a very positive development for the world in regards to those chinese trade talks.

mona, thank you. well, president trump is facing new competition in the race for president. former congressman turned radio host joe walsh has announced he's running against trump for the republican nomination in 2020. he called the president, quote, erratic, incompetent and nuts. walsh was elected to the house in the tea party election of 2010 but lost his seat two years later. now to what's being called a global crisis, the massive fire sweeping across the amazon. warplanes are now being used in the firefight as international pressure grows to protect the rain forest. this morning the amazon rain forest is on fire. 44,000 brazilian troops have now been deployed to fight the fires which cover an area the size of the u.s. from detroit to los angeles. this video showing military planes dumping water out of two giant jets. neighboring bolivia is now using this american 747 supertanker which carries 19,000 gallons of water.

meanwhile, thousands of brazilians are now protesting their government's response to the fire blaming president bolsonaro for gutting environmental laws encouraging the clearing of the land in the amazon. at the g7 summit in france, global leaders are standing together vowing to help brazil confront this crisis. and, unfortunately, forecasters warn the worst may be yet to come. the dry season in the rain forest lasts through november. a 12-year-old is among dozens of people arrested after protests took a violent turn in hong kong sunday. police used live ammunition and water cannons for the first time against the pro-democracy demonstrators. officers also launched tear gas as protesters threw sticks, bricks and umbrellas. abc's ian pannell is there. he says china is ready to move in if hong kong police lose control. >> reporter: there's more tear gas canisters being brought forward as some of the protesters are literally picking them up and trying to throw them back. this is certainly the worst
