turning to a consumer alert about amazon. "the wall street journal" is reporting the online giant is struggling to stay on top of recalled items. >> here's becky worley. >> reporter: when you buy from amazon, it feels like buying from a big box retailer, a brand you trust. but now an investigation from "the wall street journal" found over 4,000 items for sale on the site that federal agencies have declared unsafe, that are labeled deceptively or banned by regulators. things you wouldn't find on big store shelves. >> compared to a traditional retail store, there's very little vetting that goes on. >> reporter: the fda warned this infant sleeping mat could suffocate babies but "the journal" found it on amazon. motorcycle helmets that failed federal safety tests. cosmetic items falsely labeled as fda approved, like eyelash serum that was never tested. electronics that claimed safety certifications that the "journal" says were either false

what could be a more uplifting message on this #goodnewstues than the pretenders "i'll stand by you." >> that's the message students in a school outside scranton, pennsylvania, will get. here's courtney harrison from our affiliate there. >> reporter: it was the first day of school for students in the blue ridge school district. the halls were full of students ready to begin another year, and there was something new about the girls' bathroom for middle school students. positive messages now decorate the stall doors and mirrors. >> we're really focusing on building positive relationships with our students and our teachers. just supporting one another. and the teachers came to me with this idea and i think it's a great idea to support one another and to let the kids really understand and see, visually see, that people do care about them. >> reporter: the teachers acquired the funds for the project from a private grant. they wanted to show their support and remind the students they aren't alone. >> i think it will make a lot of people feel much better about themselves.

two of the three units of the urban search and rescue task force have been alerted. >> overnight dorian is passing 3 near barbados and moving at about 13 miles per hour. accuweather's adam del rosso is tracking the storm. >> we're continuing to track tropical storm dorian as it passes through the lesser antilles. it's going to continue on this track as we head throughout the day, strengthening into a category 1 hurricane as we head into early tomorrow. then pass close to puerto rico, bringing the threat for flash flooding and hurricane-force wind gusts that extend into hispaniola as well. we have tropical depression 6 tting off the southeast coast. this is strengthening into tropical storm erin as we head through the morning, eventually passing into nova scotia at the moment. bringing rough seas and gusty winds to that part of north america later this week. >> our thanks to adam. and one big weather concern on the west coast is increased

fire danger. this blaze you see here started as a grass fire in portland, oregon, but quickly spread. so far at least one home has been destroyed along with about 50 cars. people who live nearby have been told to stay indoors and shut their windows due to heavy smoke and strong winds. no injuries have been reported. officials don't know how that fire started. johnson & johnson says it will appeal a landmark ruling in an opioid liability lawsuit. >> an oklahoma judge ruled the company was largely responsible for the opioid crisis. the state had sought $17 billion. the judge ordered johnson & johnson to pay $572 million. the company has built a reputation as a responsible and family friendly maker of health products. oklahoma's attorney general says that's not so. >> we have proven that johnson & johnson built its billion-dollar brand out of greed and on the backs of pain and suffering. >> more than 2,000 other opioid lawsuits against johnson & johnson are pending across the country. the oklahoma suit was the first to go to trial.

a close aide to brazil's president says his country will reject the tens of millions of dollars pledged at the g7 summit to fight the amazon wildfires. >> he says europe should use the money on its own forests and made fun of france for the notre dame fire. meanwhile hundreds of new fires have flared up in the past few days. abc's matt gutman is on the front lines at the brazil/bolivia border. >> reporter: this fire was not here about ten minutes ago. it swept through here with enormous ferocity. you can see all that dry brush that's being completely chewed up by that fire. those palm trees, they light up like matchsticks, there's so much oil, especially at the top, incendiary. this is just one of thousands of fires that are burning right now in brazil and bolivia and ecuador along the entire amazon area. it's shocking how fast we've seen this fire march. it's moved about 200 yards in the past five minutes alone

fueled by this wind. we're going to try to get -- move in a little bit faster to get out of its way. keep going, keep going! you can see that it's chewing up not only all that dry brush but those palm trees are acting like kindling. a lot of -- whoo, there's a lot of oil inside them and they are just exploding. this is the kind of fire that we saw across this entire valley from the plane and this is what it looks like on the ground. firefighters no match for flames this ferocious. a few minutes ago this was beautiful, lush jungle. there were toucans flying out when we pulled in. now it's a hellscape. we're told no matter how much international assistance comes in here, it won't be able to do much to stop these fires, there are simply too many of them. the experts tell us there's only one thing that can stop them, that's mother nature. matt gutman, abc news, along the bolivian/brazilian border. >> those were incredible images. >> the rainy season still a long time away. you see those images. matt right there on the front

injuring several others last october. he has pleaded not guilty to muiple charges including hate crimes. harvey weinstein's sexual assault trial has been delayed until january. on monday he pleaded not guilty to a new indictment of predatory sexual assault. actress annabella sciorra will testify against weinstein. she says he raped her in 1993. the alleged incident took place too long ago to be prosecuted but her testimony could help prosecutors prove a pattern of predatory behavior. actress lori loughlin and her fashion designer husband are due in court today for a hearing in the college admissions scandal. they're expected to waive their rights to separate attorneys. they reportedly want to be represented by attorneys from the same law firm to represent a quote united front. how is this for a headline this morning? posting lots of selfies makes people like you less. >> that's a result of a new study out of washington state university. researchers studied reactions to selfies on instagram. >> they found people who post

driver from a different accident. the tow truck driver was taken to the hospital after his cab ended up pinned against the side wall. two people in the semi were also hurt. though everyone is expected to recover. the driver of the semi received two citations. so scary. now to an alarming hit-and-run case out of denver. >> policing searching for a driver who was caught on camera plowing into a crowd of people. here's abc's clayton sandell. >> reporter: police looking for the driver of this car seen plowing through a downtown crowd, slamming into two people. it happened early sunday morning as officers were breaking up a rowdy gathering outside a denver nightclub. investigators now reviewing these videos posted to social media. another view taken seconds before shows men prying open the car door appearing to attack the driver.

the nation's drugmakers on alert. this oklahoma judge has decided that corporate giant johnson & johnson helped fuel opioid addictions in his state, and he's ordering them to cough up more than $500 million to help residents struggling with addiction. >> the opioid crisis is an imminent danger and menace to oklahomans. >> reporter: craig box is one of the parents who testified at trial. his son austin was a linebacker at the university of oklahoma who started taking painkillers after a back injury. the young man was hooked quickly and then died of an overdose in 2011. >> i'm just pleased that the court found that johnson & johnson was responsible for this epidemic and the cause of so

much pain to oklahoma. >> reporter: opioids are blamed for more than 6,000 deaths in oklahoma since the year 2000. the state blamed johnson & johnson for misleading marketing to doctors examine patients but the state says downplayed the risks. 48 states and more than 2,000 local and tribal governments have sued drugmakers. >> but johnson & johnson did not cause the opioid abuse crisis here in oklahoma or anywhere in this country. >> reporter: in a statement johnson & johnson points out that the fda-approved labels of these medicines provide clear information about their risks and benefits. johnson & johnson is vowing to sue and saying this could stretch the process out for at least another couple of years. we should point out that there are at least two other pharmaceutical companies that have settled with the state of oklahoma for millions upon millions of dollars. all of them face multiple lawsuits across the country. steve osunsami, abc news, atlanta. >> thank you, steve. this morning's other big story, puerto ricans are getting ready for possibly the first hurricane of the season. >> right now tropical storm dorian is passing close to

barbados and moving west-northwest at 13 miles per hour. sustained winds are about 50 miles per hour with higher gusts. and the tropical storm is only expected to get stronger and become a hurricane. >> a number of airlines are offering a travel waiver to passengers because of dorian, including american, delta, jet blue, and caribbean airlines. several cruise lines are also rerouting ships. >> puerto rico's new governor says the island is much better prepared for dorian than it was two years ago for hurricane maria. fema is already on the island ready to assist. shelters will open to house tens of thousands of people and schools will close this afternoon. >> so let's get more on the storm's track from accuweather's adam del rosso. good morning, adam. >> we're continuing to track tropical storm dorian as it passes through the lesser antilles bringing heavy rainfall and powerful wind gusts. it's going to continue on that track, strengthening to potentially a category 1 hurricane early tomorrow, pass very close to puerto rico, and potentially impact the bahamas as we head into the weekend.

but as we head through the middle part of the week, flash flooding, hurricane-force wind gusts through parts of puerto rico into hispaniola. we have tropical depression 6 off the southeast u.s. coast strengthening. and tropical storm eris we head through the morning it's going to continue moving northward, staying generally off the u.s. coast, but there could be some heavy rain, rough seas, and gusty winds heading into nova scotia later this week. the midwest is experiencing more gusty winds and storms including this possible tornado north of minneapolis. it knocked down trees but no other damage has been reported. the worst of the storms are now over lake michigan. now to that story in brazil, more than 1,000 new fires have sprung up in the amazon rain forest in the past few days. >> firefighters are struggling to contain the blazes but making little headway. the g7 countries agreed to provide more than $22 million in aid to brazil. brazil's president says the g7 countries are treating his country like a colony and an aide says his country won't accept. the amazon fires were just one of the items addressed before the g7 summit in france wrapped up but president trump

did not show up for the discussion about climate. his chair was empty though some of his aides did attend. during a summit closing news conference with french president emmanuel macron, trump talked about next year's g7 summit, which will be in the u.s. the president wants to host it at his miami golf resort. the president said he's open to meeting with iran's president within a matter of weeks to begin negotiations on a new nuclear agreement. iran has consistently rejected such an idea, so the prospects for a meeting aren't clear. u.s. and iranian leaders have not met since the iran hostage crisis. so the president's press secretary scrambled to make it clear there has been no secret meeting between the first lady and kim jong-un. during that news conference the president said his wife quote has gotten to know the north korean leader, and there was some confusion over that statement and what it meant because melania trump did not attend either of the president's meetings with kim. press secretary stephanie grisham issued a clarification saying the trumps have discussed
