on this tuesday morning -- or what is it wednesday morning? >> it's wednesday. >> wednesday morning. i'm really excited. >> it's not friday. >> you know why i'm thinking tuesday? that's when i watched rob gronkowski's presser. we're excited to get to that with him. >> that presser was quite emotional. sort of surprising. he revealed something not a lot of us knew, that serious injury that led to him retiring at just 29 years old. an injury that happened in the super bowl. >> yeah. a lot of questions for him so we'll be talking to him. but first, we begin with tropical storm dorian on the move, and those new fears this morning that it could hit the u.s. as a hurricane. >> it's already caused damage in the caribbean and heading towards puerto rico right now. and overnight president trump approved an emergency declaration for the island. rob marciano starts us off with the very latest. good morning, rob. >> good morning, michael. this is what it did to martinique when it was a smaller, weaker storm. look at the flooding there. a passenger bus. hopefully everybody got out of there okay. that is just 4 inches of rainfall so got a lot of rain, it will have a lot of wind and getting into prime time for hurricane season so we got not

one but two storms to speak of. we'll deal with erin later. more concerning is dorian right now, still 80 miles from st. croix, the u.s. virgin islands will be impacted. tropical storm warnings for the british virgin islands and all of puerto rico for 70-mile-an-hour winds especially on the east side. once it goes past puerto rico later on tonight and tomorrow in through friday. by saturday it's a category 1 in the southwestern waters of the atlantic where it's very warm, category 2 by saturday night/sunday and sometime sunday night into monday anywhere from miami up towards savannah, maybe even the carolinas. i want to show you the spaghetti models and give you an idea of what the computer models are saying. they're not in good agreement. once we get out into the later periods here. a lot of uncertainty as it goes towards the u.s. coastline but likely to be at least a hurricane as it gets closer. first things first though, let's go to puerto rico live where victor oquendo is with us. you were with me during hurricane maria two years ago. what is going on today? >> reporter: good morning, rob. we are on the southern part of the island. we wanted to see how people outside san juan were preparing

for the storm. we found neighborhoods full of homes not ready to withstand whatever dorian brings. overnight, heavy winds and rai touching down on martinique leaving washed out roads throughout the island. this morning the people of puerto rico on edge. still dealing with the aftermath of hurricane maria which struck the island nearly two years ago. packing 155-mile-per-hour winds killing nearly 3,000 people. >> the whole island has been traumatized. so you have to take that into consideration. >> reporter: 26,000 puerto ricans still living under blue tarp roofs. we were invited inside this home. you can actually see what the original roof looked like in this home. part of that blue tarp is peeking in. fema says they are far more prepared than 2017 stocking warehouses around the island like this one with vital supplies at the ready. >> fema took ay aggr stance for dorian. it's the first system of the year and we understand that the island is still very fragile. >> reporter: last night the

governor said officials were 90% ready for dorian and would make their final preparations today. time is quickly running out. tom? >> and those blue tarp homes so dangerous. victor, thanks for that. the storm is hitting travel hard as we head to a holiday weekend. airlines canceling flights and cruise lines rerouting their ships. alex perez is in punta cana. they're bracing for dorian's effects. alex, good morning. >> reporter: hey, good morning, tom. thanks to dorian already some major problems for travelers trying to get in and out of the caribbean. take a look behind me here. you can see the airport here in punta cana is still open. some travelers trying to get out of here this morning, but all of the airlines already issuing waivers for those travelers who are being forced to reschedule their flights, and it's not just in the air. royal caribbean rerouting a number of its cruise ships. those ships now taking a more western caribbean route to avoid any impact from the storm. cecilia? >> okay, alex, thank you.

overnight president trump approved that emergency declaration just as we are about to hit the peak of hurricane season, we are now learning the president wants to take more than $155 million from fema and use that money in his fight against illegal immigration. our senior national correspondent terry moran has more from the white house. terry, the outcry was swift on this one. democrats say this is going to drain funding for disaster relief. >> reporter: that's right. they say it's a bad tradeoff. it came as a surprise. it's $155 million from fema and $271 million from the department of homeland security altogether going down to the border. that's a lot of money and the administration says it's necessary, it's needed to deal with the huge influx of people coming to the southern border. it's going to be used to provide detention beds and hearing facilities and transportation costs in a situation where those facilities are already overcrowded and resources are strained right through. but democrats say this trade-off could have deadly consequences. >> yeah, there's going to be definitely a fight over this

one. terry, one more immigration headline before we go this morning. this is from "the washington po" reporting that president trump is in a real race to finish his border wall before the 2020 election. there's even talk that he could possibly seize some private land to make this happen? >> reporter: well, that's always been in the cards, cecilia. the government has the power of imminent domain. but there's no question president trump is bringing it bright to the edge. this is, of course, his central campaign promise. it is still a rallying cry, as you know, at all his rallies and wants it done and wants 500 miles of border wall by election day. right now there's only about 60 done, and he's pushing hard. he has even said he will pardon federal officials who break the law in order to get it done. his aides say he's joking but he's not joking about getting it done. they also confirm one other thing, he wants the wall painted black and wants it to be spiky on top. black so that it's hot to the touch in the sun along the border. cecilia? >> he's very concerned about that aesthetic. thank you very much.

now to a possible blockbuster deal in the works. a source telling abc news purdue pharma is offering a massive package to end the lawsuits against the company over its role in the opioid epidemic. steve osunsami joins us from atlanta with the details. good morning, steve. >> reporter: good morning to you, michael. this is getting expensive for the drugmakers. if this deal goes through, it would cover treatments for addicted americans. this morning, the drug manufacturer who according to the government makes one of the most common painkillers involved in prescription opioid deaths is offering a potential deal, purdue pharma makers of oxycontin is willing to settle more than 2,000 lawsuits that the drugmaker is currently facing related to opioid addictions. a source tells abc news purdue offered a package that could be worth up to $10 billion to $12 billion. in a statement the company explains that while purdue pharma is prepared to defend itself vigorously in the opioid litigation, it sees little good coming from years of wasteful litigation and appeals.

"the new york times" is reporting that as part of the proposed settlement, that members of the sackler family who own the drugmaker would give up their stake in the company and pay $3 billion of their own money. >> do you believe purdue's marketing was overly aggressive? >> no. >> reporter: this is all coming out after the release of this 2015 video testimony from former chairman and president dr. richard sackler. >> do you know whether oxycontin is more powerful or less powerful a drug than morphine? >> depends what you mean by powerful. if powerful means potency, absolutely. it is twice as potent as morphine. >> reporter: the members of the sackler family who own the company made billions developing and selling oxycontin. purdue pharma says it is working actively with top state officials and plaintiffs across multiple states to get a deal

done. tom? >> again, more than 2,000 cases. all right, steve, thanks very much. now to the fight to save the amazon. this morning, concern is growing over how the fires and smoke can affect people's lungs, including children as more residents report respiratory problems. this as the battle rages on over funding to fight the flames. matt gutman is on the front lines with the very latest. matt, good morning. >> reporter: tom, good morning. it rained here a little overnight yet you can still smell the smoke in the air. that has increased a sense of urgency with brazil's president seeming to argue with european leaders because he's unhappy about how donations have been offered here. this morning as fires continue to rip through the amazon, world leaders are butting heads. after rejecting a pledge of $22 million in aid by france's president, emmanuel macron, and g7 nations, the brazilian president insisting his government will find a solution to give the world satisfaction.

brazilian officials said perhaps the money would be better served reforesting europe. this as president trump tweeted his support for bolsonaro known as the trump of bolsonaro chiming in, accusing the, quote, fake news media of distorting brazil's fire control efforts including its deployment of troops to the fire lines. new drone video showing miles of torched forest, a once lush landscape now eerie and smothered in ash. satellite images capturing thousands of acres of scorched earth. and on the ground, we saw those fires' terrifying speed outside of this ranch on the border of brazil and bolivia. you can see it's chewing up not only the dry brush but those palm trees are acting like kindling. the smoke and flame swallowing that. we doubled back to check on the rancher and through the haze there he was. but this morning, concern in parts of brazil over smoke inhalation. in some places reported

respiratory issues among children more than doubling. it's really only the massive deluges of the rainy season that will be able to put down fires like this but that is still a couple of months away. now, scientists here are concerned that these fires will put parts of brazil past the tipping point making dry season last longer and permanently turning forest into savannah. cecilia? >> indeed a global threat. okay, matt gutman, thank you. we turn to new testimony in the case of jeffrey epstein. more than a dozen accusers getting their day in court demanding justice despite epstein's death. diane macedo is here with more on this. good morning, diane. >> cecelia, good morning. it was an emotional and unusual day in court. the purpose was to drop the criminal case against jeffrey epstein. usually a routine matter after a death. but the judge in this case decided to have this hearing so that despite his death epstein's accusers could be heard. >> reporter: a dramatic day in court, more than a dozen women,

accusers of multi-millionairemu- sex offender jeffrey epstein speaking out. their message clear, epstein's dead but they still want justice. >> do i feel his death was an appropriate punishment? absolutely not. it gives nobody justice and it leaves a lot of unanswered questions. >> reporter: among epstein's accusers, chauntae davies. >> all i could say was, please, no, stop, but that seemed to excite him more. >> reporter: she said she kept years of sexual abuse by epstein bottled up. >> it definitely is so empowering to have had that day today, but it still doesn't change the fact that he's not here to, you know, face the music. >> reporter: davies tells abc news she first met epstein after being recruited by his longtime friend ghislaine maxwell for a job as a masseuse. maxwell has not been charged and has denied all wrongdoing. >> it's not how jeffrey died, but how he lived and we need to get to the bottom of everybody who was involved with that starting with ghislaine maxwell.

>> reporter: virginia giuffre said maxwell recruited her as a teenager to be a sex slave to epstein and claimed epstein ordered her to have sex with some of his powerful friends, including prince andrew, something the prince has denied. he admitted his friendship with epstein but said, at no stage during the limited time i spent with him did i see, witness or suspect any behavior of the sort that subsequently led to his arrest and conviction. outside of court, giuffre fired back. >> he knows exactly what he has done, and i hope he comes clean about it. >> reporter: prosecutors yesterday said a grand jury is already investigating epstein's death and assured the judge the government will pursue others who may have aided mr. epstein. as for his accusers, many have already filed civil suits against his estate. many more say they plan to. so this case overall is far from over. >> so much more to come. >> diane, thanks. we want to take a turn overseas to some new video showing a terrifying rhino attack, and this video is incredible.

in his career, the super bowl, just last february. >> in the super bowl about a couple minutes into the second quarter, i caught a pass on the left side, cut over and the linebacker took me right out, right here in my quad. i flipped in the air and i knew my quad was done. it was right there and then i was like last game, super bowl game, just give it all you have. >> reporter: then just 29 years old he knew he had to walk away announcing his retirement in march. >> i could barely walk. i slept for five minutes that night. i was in tears in my bed after a super bowl victory. >> reporter: it's a sentiment 29-year-old indianapolis colts quarterback andrew luck shares. this weekend making shock waves announcing he too was walking away from his $140 million contract saying that years of battling injuries had taken a physical and mental toll. >> i felt stuck in it and the only way i see out is to no longer play football. it's taken my joy of this game away.

the icing on the cake was definitely the hit in the super bowl. you know, i had to stay in the game for sure. you know, it's the last game of the year. >> it's the super bowl. >>t's thsuper bowl, man. but that hit was brutal. i've had a couple actually quad contusions before and i missed like a game or two and i was back within two weeks. so when that hit happened actually i was -- you just shrug it off in your mind like whatever, a week or two, i'll be good. but literally like this one was for real, like it was deep and it literally put a hole in my quad. like for like four weeks you can rub it and, like, it would indent. >> you had fluid drained out of your quad for quite a while after that. >> yes. >> it didn't look -- most people at home don't see. the big hits are the ones that probably don't hurt as much. the little ones that people really can't see that hurt like that one did. and you retired but you could tell you still even though you said the game took joy, you still got emotional talking about it.

>> yes, because, you know, i love the game of football and i have so much respect for the game of football and i understand what i signed up for. so football to me has brought me to this fire. football as made me a stronger person 100%, and i'm so thankful for it and played in one of the greatest organizations in all of sports and i'm so thankful for that opportunity and i played with the greatest player of all time, the greatest coach of all time, one of the greatest owners of all time. i'm so thankful for that and it can help me go to the next chapter of my life taking things from there, seeing what i learned from guys like that and going on in my life and learning what i've learned and the circumstances i went through, i look at it now and i am thankful for it definitely. that hit in the super bowl but guess what, i kept playing and i ended up helping the team with that big catch to score a touchdown on a running play the

next play. so, you know, you got to do what you got to do and just going out there is just an amazing feeling too. you know that feeling you get running out of that tunnel. >> oh, yeah. >> you can't beat that feeling. that's why even when you do get hit you want to go back out next week because that feeling, that rush being out there with your teammates, giving it all you have -- where else can you find that feeling, you know? >> you don't want to let the guys down. >> yes, you can't let the guys down. so you got to give it all you have. i'm so thankful for the opportunities that i was presented and to take advantage of and give it my all, but -- and it's just made me so much more stronger and brought me to this point now and i found ways to recover from everything too, you know, finding the right treatments, finding techniques on how to heal. finding different workouts and everything and it's going to lead me to my next path in life, i feel like. >> i'm curious, though. when you went to your teammates and you said, i'm going to retire, how did they react to that because i'm sure they want you to play. you're one of the best players in the league, one of the best

ever at your position. and so how did they react when you said, i'm going to retire? >> when i retired actually, i'll tell you the truth, i didn't even tell any of my teammates. you know, i called up, you know, the -- a couple guys in the organization that took me. so i wanted to pay my respects and let them know before it happened, but, you know, i just knew the decision was clear. i knew what i wanted. and when i did retire too i didn't even have that passion, that, like, energy to, like, call up everyone because i just needed to get it out of the way. so i just did it. >> you were over it. you were done. >> i was over it. i didn't even want to negotiate at all with anyone like, oh, rob -- but i have talked about it before with teammates and stuff but they all understood totally. i would say and now that i have talked to teammates since they're 100% supportive. they all know what the game is

like and to walk away on my own terms is just a great way to leave. >> you hit on something. guys who play the game know what it's like. for fans they see somebody who looks able bodied, great player, going out on top. andrew luck, great player, comeback player of the year, decides to retire at 29 like you did. fans weren't so happy with his retirement. but for you, what advice do you have for him? >> you know, since i've been retired for five months i had a game plan, though, and i know that you can basically fix like any injury that you sustain in football. i mean, like there's ways out there to recover. there's ways out there to get better and then when you get better you can get stronger from there. so that's what i knew too and i knew i had to step away from the game of football in order to accomplish that, in order to accomplish -- let my body heal,

appearing before a judge waiving their right to separate counsel. they have pleaded not guilty to conspiracy charges in the largest college admissions scandal in history accused of paying $500,000 in bribes to get their two daughters accepted to usc as recruits for the crew team. >> he may have embellished, lied a bit on our application. >> reporter: in court, their lawyers arguing the couple didn't pay off individuals, instead giving money directly to the university, its athletic department as well as the charity once run by rick singer, the alleged mastermind of the admission scheme. the judge saying, things are brewing in this case involving usc warning the couple their lawyer's previous involvement with the university could be an issue for their case in the future. >> do you guys have any comment? >> reporter: meanwhile nearly 20 usc students caught up in the scandal in limbo returning to

up to 1215 confirmed cases, there is no sign this outbreak is slowing down. they largely think it is attributed to the fact we have a very mobile, global society. we have people coming in from other parts of the world, philippines, ukraine where there are big-time measles outbreak and come into the country with measles and then they are entrenched in unvaccinated communities where this virus spreads like wildfire so paige concern. >> and with school coming up, you're a parent and getting ready to send your kids off what can you do to protect them? >> the key is vaccination. by the time children are 4 years old they should have at least one dose of the measles vaccine giving them 9 % coverage, 97% by the time they're 6. they should wash their hands and stay home if possible when sick. that's not just for measles but as we go into flu season, norovirus, just basic good sense. wash the hands. >> good advice. >> well, you'll need to wash

eat. it's a story we first saw in "the washington post," and t.j. holmes is back here with more. you have little kids like i do. this is crazy because it takes them so long to eat. >> they are not supposed to be eating a barbecued chicken pizzadilla thing but there are nutrition standards, federal standards for kids in this country for school. there is no standard for how long they get to eat that lunch. so what's the point, tom? if you have a nutritious meal in front of you and no time to eat it, there's growing concern now that this is having a short-term but even long-term impact on this country's kids. >> hey, guys, come on. we got to get ready. >> reporter: deb shell would always pack lumps for her three kids. >> here, honey. >> reporter: but when they came back from school she noticed the bags were often still full. >> every single day they kept coming home and nothing was touched. >> mariana saw a similar pattern at her house. >> when i picked up my children

they came out and said, i'm starving. >> reporter: the two moms decided to get to the bottom of this. >> we found out that our kids had 15 minutes and we also found out that there were 18 children that day standing in the lunch line when the bell rang which was the end of lunch. >> i knew that there was a limited amount of time for lunch but last year it just got worse. >> reporter: shell created a change.org petition to address this time concern which has now garnered over 1400 signatures. experts say these short lunch times exist all over the country. >> in a recent national survey about 20% of schools reported that they had 0 minutes or less for their school lunch period. >> the negative effects of this short time to eat a balanced peel can be wild widespread including reduced ability to focus, lower energy levels and less impulse control. >> they think they'll improve test scores with this but making

20 months. abc's rebecca jarvis is here with more on this. hey. >> hey, cecilia, great to see you. i'm sure this is one a lot of people watching can relate to. graduating, thousands of dollars in debt. i know i did. i know you did, cecilia. but the woman you're about to meet found a way to pay it all off in just under two years. here's how she did it. like many 20 something, sarah mcgowan graduated college with a degree and also deep in debt. >> when i was applying to colleges i was looking at the costs, and i narrowed it down to three universities but ended up choosing the university of minnesota in the twin cities because it was the most affordable. >> reporter: to minimize that debt sarah even finished in just three years but still found herself with $36,000 in student loans at graduation so she took action. >> looked at the total cost that i owed and then they give you the number, what it will be at the end of your ten-year payoff. i remember it was about a

$20,000 difference. i thought, there's so much more i can do with that extra 20,000. >> reporter: sarah committed to a time line and found a conspiracy system. >> my friends and i were so great about helping each other achieve our financial goals. we'll try to stay in on nights or go canoeing instead of going out and spending money. >> reporter: she kept living costs low by having roommates and earned extra money from a side hustle. >> i continued to keep my baby-sitting job i had throughout college and then my finances trying to keep them as close as they were in college as possible. so all this extra income i could put towards debt. >> reporter: and after just 20 months, sarah was debt-free. >> i think the key to that is keeping a grateful mind-set. not comparing yourself to others and reminded myself every single day i have everything that i need to live a great life. >> all right this, is such a great story. we have gathered a group of twentysomethings here and will put you to the test.

how on top of your financial future are you with true or false questions. you have the answers, you have the paddles. if you have student loans you should pay them off before you contribute to a 401(k). true or false? >> the answer is false. i'm sorry. the one person. one of you got it -- the answer is false. here's why. for the most part student loans carry a low interest rate. make sure you're putting money into that 401(k), first of all, to get the employer match especially if the employer is matching but second of all, over time that 401(k) should return more than the cost of the interest on your student loan. >> where were you when i was in my 20s? okay, one more for you guys, ready. true or false, having debt on too many credit cards and having student loans can negatively affect your credit score? true or false? >> false. unanimous. you guys, so, here's the thinking here. first of all, yes, it's true that you shouldn't have too many

mean, my mind-set is clear. when you're done, you're done and i had that mind-set and that's why i walked away because i knew it was timend i knew i was done but sometimes, you know, you wake up and i know that there's practice going on now and everything, but, you know, i've always had that mentality i got to get up and do something. i got to get up so i'm still bringing that mentality to the next chapter of my life. like i'm waking up and walking back and forth and run a couple sprints and saying let's go, robment i'm confident today. i'm energy today. i'll bring it. i am joy today. i am going to bring what i need to the table. >> our vision of you sitting at home in the bathrobe isn't going to happen. >> speaking of next chapter since you're not on the football field anymore, what are you up to now. >> i'm up to a lot of things. the last couple of months i relaxed. you know, you need that down time. i played football for 14 years basically. [ applause ]

just nonstop. so i've been relaxing, letting my body heal. i still love to be active. and now it's time to go out there and venture off and i'm getting into a lot of business opportunities now. my family has always been in business. it's my turn to step up. i want to get into things that revolve around my life that have helped me and i believe football has brought me t a place and thankful for it, brought me to a place where i am now where i'm stronger and i'm revolving myself and i'm contributing and i'm actually venturing into a product, a company, abacus health and they ventured off and started cbdmedic. a topical cream and it helps relieve pain and i just love it. and it's helped me through my experiences. [ applause ] i want to get involved in things that have helped moo he recover

we're going to go to orlando to the highly anticipated "star wars" galaxy's edge at walt disney world open to the public tomorrow and abc's will reeve and a few lucky military families got a once in a lifetime sneak peek at this galaxy far, far away. hey, will. >> reporter: hey, michael. i am outside the hottest experience in the galaxy, the millennium falcon smugglers run. we absolutely dominated that yesterday and did everything else there is to do here. we built lightsabers and assembled droids. had the absolute best day with some families who really deserve it. ♪ these five military families sacrifice so much to help serve our country, so this morning, disney is serving them surprising them with something out of this galaxy. ♪ a preview of the new "star wars" galaxy's edge at walt disney world in orlando before it opens to the public tomorrow. ♪
