many of our hilly bay area communities have these narrow winding streets and you see the no parking signs, right, on summit drive in corte madera. abc7 news reporter laura anthony is live and they think the no parking solution in corte madera will work for them. >> reporter: hi, the no parking on heather ridge way hasn't gone into effect now, but residents have been noticed it will sometime soon. this is all part of a fire safety program launched a couple of years ago. oakland is earmarked more than two dozen roads like this one for parking restrictions. the department says this road from pine haven to thorn hill is simply too narrow for any street parking, but some residents say a complete ban is a total over reaction. like many streets in oakland, heather ridge way can be a tight squeeze for a car, much less a fire engine. that's why last month the city

of oakland sent notices to residents that soon there will be no street parking allowed on either side of heather ridge. >> it's not just oakland. this is the greater bay area, marin county, sonoma county. when things start moving quickly in relation to fire, people can't get out in a timely manner and we can't get in when they're trying to get out. >> reporter: a typical fire engine needs 14 feet plus another 6 feet if a car is paukd 07b9 street. a recent survey at heather ridge found some spots is barely 14 feet wide and less than 20 feet in most places. >> it's too much. >> reporter: still some es are dejts sabaning street parking entirely is overkill. >> you see that there's areas where i think a fire truck can pass it's kind of going a nuclear option is kind of a middle ground. >> around here there's lots of streets with similar parking difficulties, and maybe this is just a start. they're going to go through parking everywhere.

i don't know where the cars wind up. >> reporter: another site disastrous, oakland hills fire in 1991 where fire equipment had a hard time getting in. and more recent infernos in places like paradise where people had a hard time getting out. in some cases abandoning their cars to run for their lives. >> clearly the paradise fire has made it very important that we have the ability to get out from where we are. >> reporter: now, complicating the issue here on heather ridge, many of these homes date back to the 1930s. some don't have driveways, some don't have garages. they have nowhere else to park but here on the street. i've seen residents out today with measuring tapes. they tell me that in this area it's at least 20 feet, maybe a little bit more, so they're hoping the city can negotiate with them and at least allow some street parking on these wider sections. it's an ongoing discussion. live in oakland, laura anthony, abc7 news. >> thank you, laura. >> right now san joe police are

looking for a hit and run driver. >> a pedestrian was hit and killed this afternoon at story road and jackson avenue. >> let's go right to the scene for you and abc7 news reporter kris reyes with the very latest. kris. >> reporter: good evening. i am on jackson avenue and this stretch of street has been shutdown from story road and cinderella causing quite a of traffic in the area. you can see there is an active scene. the vehicles involved in the crash, they're starting to be cleared out. the coroner's office arrived about half an hour ago. we are still waiting for the press information officer from san jose police department to arrive with a fresh update. but take a look at shots from sky 7 from earlier this afternoon. ns what we know so far. a pedestrian was killed by a hit and run driver in east san jose thursday afternoon. the crash was reported at story road and south jackson avenue at 3:45 p.m. the suspect left the area on foot and the intersection will be closed to traffic until 7:00 p.m. police are asking anybody who may have seen anything to please

call 911 and for drivers, of course, to avoid the area. now, we have been talking to residents around the crash. none of them want to go on camera, but one person told me she is not surprised at all about this fatality. she told me on the daily they see cars speeding on the street and not only that, but running red lights and doing doughnuts. we'll give you fresh updates. we'll put it on our website as we get them. now back to the newsroom. >> kris, thank you. another crash to tell you about. a 12-year-old girl from brentwood had to be air lifted from the hospital after she was critically hit by a hit and run driver. it happened around 7:00 this morning on sunrise road and trail side drive. the young girl was walking to edna hill middle school when the driver of an suv hit her and kept on driving. the superintendent of brentwood union school district said students who had class with the young victim were told about the incident and offered counseling. >> i think that it's unfathomable that somebody would

leave the scene after injuring a child. it's not really representative of the family and the community we have here in brentwood. >> the young victim was taken to u.c. davis medical center where she is now in stable condition. the female driver was found at a nearby parking lot on elkins way. she was booked into contra costa county jail on charges of dui and felony hit and run. >> a busy street in san francisco's chinatown is now being monitored by new security cameras after local merchants complained about crime driving away customers. city officials and neighborhood leaders hoped to stop crimes like this. you're looking at pictures taken by a business owner when thieves broke into an suv parked outside his store. 18 new high-definition cameras are now recording what happened along stockton street between sacramento and washington. police will be age to use the footage obviously, they hope, to solve crimes. >> new developments today in a case that has sparked a debate over the safety around san francisco's embarcadero. a judge denied bail for the man

accused of attacking a resident of a condo building in the neighborhood. austin vincent's attorneys were denied the request to release vincent from jail, and that ended with an expletive-filled response from vincent. that story now from abc7 news reporter vic lee. >> reporter: in court, judge ross moody reviewed the security video which showed her being attacked august 11th. allegedly by austin james vincent. as she tried to enter the lobby of her condo building near the embarcadero. this mugshot of vincent was released after he was arrested that night. a judge later ordered vincent to wear a gps ankle monitor and enroll in a substance abuse program. in the days that followed, another woman identified him as the man who attacked her with a knife south of market in february. this time the judge put him in jail. today in court, prosecutors dropped the most recent charge saying the woman had misidentified vincent as her knife wielding attacker.

but they asked the judge to deny bail, saying he was still a public threat. d.a. spokesman alex bastian. >> we feel strongly detaining him at this juncture while we figure out what the right outcome of this case is is the right approach. >> reporter: vincent's attorney asked the judge to let him out with a gps monitor and enroll him in a rehab program. >> i think this case provides us with a powerful opportunity to decide what we want to do and how we want to help people like mr. vincent. >> reporter: the prosecutor read a statement from kosarian. in part, i'm unable to sleep at night without having nightmares of mr. vincent finding me and attacking me again. the judge ended up denying bail saying jail in this case guaranteed public safety. reid represents the group safe embarcadero to all. >> everyone knows he is a danger to the public and the judge sees

ocean boulevard and pacifica. >> homelessness presents our community with a wide range of problems. >> reporter: pastor jonathan markham volunteered to be part of a citizens advisory board to address sewage spills and blight in neighborhoods. they held their first meeting in this room of the pacifica police department of all 7. a closed session so the 11 members could get to know each other. >> suddenly there was a loud knocking on the door. >> reporter: like a bang? >> real loud bang. and like somebody wanted to get in and get in urgently. >> reporter: police tell me the 46-year-old pacifica resident and san francisco police sergeant maria danadi objected to being kept out of the meeting and the surveillance video shows after she banged on the door and confronted the pacifica police chief, she pulled this fire alarm in the lobby and left. >> i think we hold our police officers to higher standard. i know we hold our officers to a higher standard. we would expect them to behave a little bit better than that.

at one point the bakery had five locations throughout the bay area. they are now down to two. one of them behind me here in sunnyvale, take a look. this is the good-bye letter that they posted on the window here. both locations will close on saturday, so customers are now scrambling to get their hands on a cake. for many in the south bay, the taste of these iconic cakes will soon become a distant memory. >> the fudge on the chocolate chocolate is to die for. >> reporter: the prolific oven bakery store will close its doors on saturday after four decades in business. >> i ordered three chocolate chocolates and one of the carrot cakes and we're just going to end up freezing them. >> reporter: a family-owned business that has helped this community celebrate in so many ways. >> birthdays almost always. so five grandchildren now. i had two girls that i raised here and they always wanted a carrot cake from prolific.

much better than i could bake. >> reporter: co-owner regina chan loves hearing the stories but says it's been tough to fill her open positions because many candidates are choosing to work for in-house catering departments at nearby tech companies that can pay a higher wage. >> everything is done by hand. all the weighing, mixing, putting the batter in the pans, decorating the cake. so it's very, very labor intensive. >> reporter: combine the labor and rising cost in silicon valley and it's easy to see why this became a recipe for disappointment, leaving chan no choice but to close. despite that she said she has no regrets. >> i was eight years old when my parents took over the prolific oven. i wasn't tall enough to look over the counter. >> reporter: as customers stopped by for a final time to savor their good-byes, a chance to express their gratitude. >> the carrot cake was my favorite. i'm a chocolate guy. the napoleons, cookies they would give to us for free. >> reporter: the bay area a sweert place thanks in part to

this time of the evening. these are our forecast features. we will see some fog developing near the coast and bay overnight. it will be mainly sunny and mild tomorrow. it will be warming up for labor day weekend. nice warm up as a matter of fact. here's our forecast animation, taking us into the late overnight hours. we'll see fog developing. 5:00 tomorrow morning as the commute gets underway there will being a bit of fog not only at the coast locally out over the bay and inland to greet morning commuters. but the fog will burn back quickly to the coast line giving us mainly sunny day as we approach the weekend. overnight lowes will be mainly in the upper 50s to low 60s, so a pretty mild overnight period once again. it's been that way pretty much all week long. the highs will range from up ore 60s at the coast to mid and upper 70s at the bay to 80s inland. farther north might see 91 at cloverdale and yu kye ka. generally high to mid to upper 80s. it gets warm on saturday with many locations inland reaching to the low to mid 90s on

police in indiana are following the lead of officers in fremont by patrolling their city in an all electric tesla. the indianapolis suburb unveiled a model 3com pleat with emergency lights and other features of a police car. fremont police began patrolling in a tesla back in january. officers are evaluating and providing their feedback on how it's been working. >> a date is now set for apple's

next big product release. apple sent invitations out today confirming the date in place, tuesday, september 10, at apple's cupertino campus. the center of the event is to be the iphone 11. according to tech crunch, rumors are there will be three new models that will include a triple camera array with an ultra wide-angle lens. >> well, one company is hoping to frankie frat parties and tailgates more eco friendly. drink wear brand ball is making reusable beer pong cups. the aluminum cups are shaped like the infamous red cups used for the drinking game. the cups go on sale next month. there is a good look at them. ball says they will cost 25 cents each compared to a package of 50 cups. but they're reusable. they will be replacing plastic cups with these new aluminum ones. >> hurricane dorian is set to make history and not in a good way. the storm is set to hit the

>> announcer: now news to build a better bay area from abc7. >> good evening again. we'll begin with this half hour with hurricane dorian, and did has the potential to become a category 4 storm when it approaches the east coast of florida. >> it's expected to make landfall monday morning and could be the strongest hurricane florida has seen in decades. >> abc7 news reporter megan tevrisian has more from hurricane beach. >> reporter: hurricane dorian gaining strength at the coast. it has the potential to become catastrophic hurricane 4. it's gaining momentum as it moves to eastern florida. the governor declaring a state of emergency in 26 counties. >> the message now is all floridians really need to

monitor hurricane dorian and make the necessary preparations. >> reporter: most hurricane tested floridians know the drill. >> i'm loading up. >> reporter: people stocking up on water, supplies, and fuel. some store shelves already empty. gas lines long. >> hurricanes are very unpredictable, so it can go south, it can go north or it can go on a track they think it's going to go. >> reporter: even the palm beach zoo taking measures to secure the animals. >> nice and secure so they won't hear a lot of banging. >> reporter: if dorian makes landfall with winds of 125 miles per hour, it would be the strongest hurricane to hit the florida east coast since andrew in 1992, which killed dozens of people and cost nearly $27 billion in damage. miami's mayor cautioning residents not to panic. >> we're much better prepared today for a major storm than we were back in 1992. >> reporter: since we got here today almost every store is out

of water. three airports in florida are now in the process of tying down their equipment and 15 cruise ships have had to change course due to the storm. megan, abc news, daytona beach, florida. >> this one looks very, very serious and we're tracking it closely. >> indeed. let's get the time line now from spencer christian. >> okay, dan and kristen, we're taking a closer look now at the storm. you can see it's a very powerful storm. a category 1 now, but intensifying even as we speak. it's got maximum sustained winds of 85 miles an hour. it's out in the open warm waters of the south atlantic. it's not moving over land areas at the moment. because it is not going to encount or land the next couple of days, it will be able to intensify and not move over areas that would cause it to lose power. so it will become a category 3 hurricane sometime tomorrow, expected to sustain that strength through saturday. and then as it crosses over the bahamas, it is expected to reach category 4 strength and that's the level at which we expect the storm to be when it makes landfall somewhere on the east

running track at the middle school. school officials decided to keep all students indoors at chaboya and tom matsumoto elementary school. they kept them in certain parts of the campus as a precaution. >> couples with distracted driving could be the blame for an increase in people being killed by red light runners. that is according to a new study out tonight. aaa found fatal red light accidents increased for five straight years from 2012 to 2017. and someone is more likely to die if they're not in the red light runner's car. just last month a central valley man and wife suffered life-threatening injuries when a woman sped through a red light and hit them in a crosswalk. >> another reminder to be safe around schools and buses. a houston mother captured the moment, scary moment her daughter was almost hit by a car getting off the school bus. >> lela, lela, come here -- no, wait, wait, wait.
