hurricane dorian, slowly moving through bahamas on its way close to the united states. we'll have the latest track on the storm and the latest wind speeds in the accuweather forecast ahead. i'm in florida here along the coast where hurricane warnings are now in effect. and everyone just nervously waiting for dorian's arrival. i'll have the latest coming up. authorities are searching for a man who fled from police and went through a gate at oakland international airport. everybody. >> utter devastation in the bahamas as hurricane dorian continues to pound the country. the eye of the storm made its first landfall this afternoon. reporters on the island hardest hit saying it will no doubt be a deadly event. good evening. thanks for joining us. hurricane dorian is expected to be over the bahamas for several more hours as it crawls its way towards the u.s. mainland. in three states, florida, south carolina, and georgia, people are facing evacuation orders. elizabeth hur has the latest. >> reporter: when officials here in florida said hurricane dorian will be dangerous and residents need to be prepared. i can tell you no one here is taking any chances. hurricane dorian making history as the strongest storm ever to strike the northern part of the bahamas. >> we need help. someone please come help us.

>> reporter: dorian leading a path of destruction, ripping roofs off buildings, shredding homes into pieces and the latest storm surge flooding streets with feet of water. the eye passing through the islands, where marcus martin took cover. >> look at that. those are the wind gusts that we have seen and that officials have warned about. >> reporter: the monster storm marching towards the u.s., threatening millions along the east coast from florida to georgia and the carolinas. >> north carolina has to take this seriously. be ready. >> reporter: some authorities already announcing voluntary and mandatory evacuations beginning monday in parts of south carolina and florida where hurricane warnings are also now in effect. >> that's why we've got to prepare for the worst. >> reporter: in florida, most business owners and residents heeding that warning from officials, spending the day boarding up their windows.

>> we have four cases of water at home. 11 gallons of gas for the generators. >> you learn to respect mother nature. >> reporter: there you have it, the people they talk to know how to prepare for hurricanes and say they know to leave when those evacuation orders go into effect. i'm elizabeth hur for "abc7 news." >> meteorologist drew tuma is tracking the hurricane. >> we just got the latest info within the past three minutes on dorian. it is still a major category 5 storm. winds 175 miles per hour. that is constant winds. the gusts even higher than that, over 200 miles an hour. look at that eye. just an indication of a really strong storm right now, moving to the west at 5 miles per hour. so take a look at the latest track of the storm with dorian.

what you will notice is the storm will continue to move to the west through the next 12 hours or so. the critical time from time to time will be tomorrow afternoon into early tuesday morning when dorian will likely make that turn, first to the northeast, and then to thenohwest. but it's important to remember dorian is not just a point on a map. the winds extend out 140 miles from the center of the storm. so dorian does not have to make landfall to create problems along the florida coast. we could see some strong winds and heavy rain. so it's for that fact that a hurricane warning is in effect up to titusville. now we have a hurricane watch. this just issued, from daytona beach up to jacksonville, florida. we still have 24 hours to see when this storm will make that turn to the north, but we're looking at issues with wind, rain, and storm surge along the florida coastline. >> drew, thank you very much. bay area emergency responders are helping in the

hurricane response. the multiagency task force three sponsored by the fire protection district, has two people in florida. these are task force members on an earlier mission. they also have a response team on standdy. air travel in and out of florida will grind to a halt tomorrow. airlines have canceled 600 flights tomorrow. the ft. lauderdale, hollywood, orlando, melbourne and palm beach airports plan to coach. other airports including miami have not announced plans to close, but flyers are being asked to check with airlines before heading to the airport. keep track of the hurricane and the storm's impact with the "abc7 news" app. download the app to get breaking news updates as they happen. tonight, new details about a man authorities say rammed his car through a gate and drove on to the tarmac at oakland

international airport this afternoon. deputies are still searching for the man. he was last seen jumping into san francisco bay. luc pena is live with more. >> that's right. the search continues for a man deputies say they believe is in the water. the search continues for a suspect. the sheriff says he yield to deputies after failing to stop for a traffic sign. >> he made his way to the airport tarmac. >> reporter: once on the tarmac, the suspect drove at a high speed, from the south to the north end of the airport, for almost two miles, while being chased by deputies who later saw him jump in the san francisco bay. >> at this point, we can't draw a nexus to a tricerrorist event.

it's just highly suspicious. >> reporter: the suspect was spotted driving around the terminals minutes prior. what did you find in his vehicle? >> assault rifles and paraphernalia with hoods and masks. upon further look at those weapons, they turned out to be air soft weapons. >> reporter: a following this incident, travelers raised concerns about safety. >> that's a serious problem. i would hope that all airports, whether they're small or regional airports, better security measures. >> reporter: oakland international airport said they're investigating and added all details are referred to law enforcement. the airport will not discuss details regardng its security program. they will be working with the fbi to investigate what his intentions were and what he was doing in the area.

luz pena, "abc7 news." >> luz, thank you very much. ♪ amazing grace how sweet the sound ♪ tonight in texas, an emotional vigil for the seven people killed in a mass shooting saturday. the gunman fired at random as he drove around the city of odessa. tonight, we're learning more about the shooter. >> reporter: fear and chaos in odessa, texas on tuesday as families run for cover after an active shooter shows up at the synergy movie complex armed. 36-year-old seth atar went on a rampage. it started when a state trooper tried to pull him over for failure to signal. the gunman fired shots at random, then hijacked this air carrier minivan, killing the

29-year-old postal worker. there are 15 different crime scenes. there are also stories of courage. this e.r. doctor running across a field to help a young mother gunned down. >> he had been shot in the right arm and had a really huge exit wound and looked like the bullet may have gone in her torso. >> reporter: three bullet holes on the side of her suv. the doctor ran back and forth to help keep the woman alive. >> i ran out and had to r back to get the iv supplies, and then back across the field again. >> reporter: she was rushed to the hospital in the back of a police car. the youngest of the injured, a 17-month-old anderson davis, who was hit with shrapnel in her mouth and chest. her mother says she's doing well. >> she's up and smiling and stable. >> reporter: seven innocent victims lost their lives, the youngest a 15-year-old who attends odessa high school. and today, a team of fbi agents

"abc7 news" was there as a larger group that called itself as being against fascism and racism marched to the uc berkeley campus. th there were a few brief confrontations, but a heavy place presence kept things in order. we spoke to organizers of the no to marxism rally. >> this is now a communist hearing taking place. if you're pro american, you're likely to be attacked. >> my idea was to not only educate her and inform her and help her to realize why there was a turnout against her today. >> we ve not heard of any arrests. there was a huge sideshow in antioch last night. authorities arrested 71 people and impounded 26 vehicles. police say there were up to 100 cars involved, and the crowd was

estimated at 200 people. six law enforcement agencies were called to help, with two helicopters and the antioch police drone. san francisco firefighters and the coast guard rescued eight people who became stranded on the bay when their sailboat became disabled near treasure island. it happened before 6:00 this evening. the captain radioed for help saying the crew was notble to navigate the boat in the high wind and waves. everyone hopped off and on to rescue boats. the boat was towed to san francisco. new at 11:00, they've been standing tall for generations, but now a stand of dying pine trees is set to be cut down this week. kate larson has the story from the prisidio. >> reporter: planted by the u.s. army in the 19th century, these pines have been standing for 130 years in san francisco, rooted in an army major's plan to build

a forest. their end is about returning to roots. >> i'm all for restoring it back to its natural has been bat. >> reporter: michelle supports cutting down the trees, which are at the end of their life stan and are vulnerable to breaking or falling. >> we have concerns on high, windy days. i tell people stay away from the forest because we don't know if there's a safety issue. >> reporter: the pine stand is along the trail behind the apartments where residents are acutely aware of the tenuous timber. >> the tree made this huge sound, nobody knew what it was. people came looking and calling the office. >> reporter: last month, one of the pines crashed into a metal gate. >> i'm not for taking frees down, but if it's for safety, go ahead. >> reporter: the process will

>> good evening. in tonight's headlines, hurricane dorian has made history as the strongest storm aefr to strike the northern part of the bahamas. millions are now in the path of the hurricane as it marches towards the u.s. mainland. evacuation orders have been issued in the carolinas, georgia, and florida. there's still no sign of a man who led deputies on a bizarre chase on the oakland airport field this afternoon. the man ran through a gate and then drove along taxi ways and service roads. investigators believed he jumped in the san francisco bay has not been seen since. a vigil was held in texas saturday after a gunman fired at random. he was later killed by police. 22 police were injured, including a 17-month-old girl. in the south bay, a deadly haz/mat accident that led to an evacuation remains you believed

we introduce you to one woman setting an example. >> we're always on the lookout for real people doing great things. this is the mayor of east palo alto, who is setting an example showing it's never too late to achieve your academic goals. >> i keep thinking, i know it's real, but it hasn't set up. >> reporter: surrounded by family and friends, receiving a college degree still feels like a dream to lisa. >> the diploma hasn't come to me yet. once that is in the mail, i'll look at it like, this is really real. >> reporter: her journey to the stage took longer than expected. this east palo alto native and single mom of three didn't put herself first. >> i knew i had limited education dollars. what i had to do, what i decided to do was give my children the best opportunity that they could have. >> reporter: her way of people,work ethic and deep roots made her a strong candidate for mayor. but without that degree, she had her doubts.

"abc7 news"s with in santa clara where the amusement park held a job hair looking to hire up to 500 people. positions include monsters and live show performers. it starts september 27 through november 2. tsa is reversing its ban ban "star wars" themed bottles that resemble a droid or detonator. the tsa said they look like replica explosives. now the agency says the bottles can be put in carry-on beings but have to be empty. one last check on the weather right now. let's see what drew tuma has to tell us. >> as we continue to track what is a major hurricane still over the bahamas right now, dorian has winds of 175 miles per hour, crawling to the west right now at 5 miles per hour.

a scary moment last night for jibl s -- giants right-hanr who went down in a world of pain. we learned it was aer to labrum. the team is looking into options and surgery could be one of those options. pablo sandoval set to have tommy john's surgery, but the fans gave him a standing ovation before and after his final at-bat of the year. it was a groundout right here, but a special moment for the player and the manager. >> it's good to see the ovation from the fans. this is a moment i'll never forget.
