overnight even slowing down as it takes aim at the east coast of the united states. the bahamas' press tweeted that the grand bahama international airport is under five feet of water. >> and look at this. the storm's projected path. mandatory evacuations ordered for areas of florida, georgia and south carolina including parts of jacksonville, florida disaster in the bahamas. this morning, scenes of utter devastation after a direct hit from dorian. >> please pray for us. please pray for us, everyone. please pray for us. >> new video from the bahamas showing widespread destruction. homes surrounded by water. trees ripped apart. boats capsized. >> we need assistance fast. >> reporter: hurricane dorian making history as the strongest storm ever to hit the chain of islands and tying for the strongest atlantic hurricane landfall on record. this woman taking to social media pleading for help after winds up to 185 miles per hour ripped the roof off her apartment building.

>> everyone that's staying in the apartment building, we stuck right here. please pray for us. >> reporter: in the two-minute video she describes being trapped with her baby as the water rushes in quickly rising. >> the whole apartment building we stay in, the whole roof came off. please pray for us. pray for abaco, please, i'm begging you. my baby is with us. so please pray for us. i'm begging you pray for us. >> reporter: the eye passing through the abaco aisles the storm in the northern bahamas where abc's marcus moore and his team took cover in their hotel. >> i have seen utter devastation here in marsh harbour, we are surrounded by water with no way out. the storm surge taking over the terrain. i have seen trees that have been snapped and boats destroyed and roofs ripped off buildings. absolute devastation. there really are no words. it is pure hell. >> jenise fernandez with wplg at the same hotel.

the hardest. states of emergency have been declared up through the carolinas. meanwhile, hundreds of utility trucks are already in place lined up and ready to respond. abc's serena marshall continues our coverage now. she is in new smyrna beach, florida. serena, good morning. >> reporter: kenneth, janai, good morning to both of you. more mandatory evacuations are set to get under way here in florida in just a few hours, and residents are bracing for this storm and hoping that eye stays off the coast. this morning, millions of americans scrambling to escape dorian's path. >> there's nothing set in stone here. that's why we're trying to prepare for the worst. >> reporter: after battering the bahamas, the hurricane is now marching towards the u.s. threatening millions along the east coast. >> north carolina has to take this seriously. be ready. >> reporter: evacuation orders have been given to more than 800,000 people on south carolina's coast including all of charleston as well as

six other counties in georgia. some barrier islands along florida's east coast. >> when the water gets high, there's not a whole lot you can do about that, and given the uncertainty of the storm, it's better to err on the side of safety. >> reporter: just as the labor day holiday weekend wraps up, the hurricane is forcing four airports to close in florida including daytona beach, orlando melbourne, palm beach and ft. lauderdale/hollywood airport. authorities have already cleared the beaches up and down the coast. abc's victor oquendo is in delray. >> barrier islands like this one in delray are under a mandatory evacuation and here's why. take a look from above. these are very narrow strips of land. they're surrounded by water on both sides. the storm surge could easily flood the entire area. >> reporter: in daytona beach most business owners and residents are heeding the warnings from officials. boarding up windows and stocking up on more supplies. >> we got nine sheets of plywood here and then we got i think four cases of water at home, 11

gallons of gas and a generator. >> once you live through a few of them, you learn to respect mother nature. >> reporter: florida has already activated nearly 5,000 national guardsmen to respond to this storm. we saw those power trucks lining up, hundreds of them, at daytona international airport also pre-positioning to respond. i spoke to some of those guys and they came all the way from illinois and maryland to help out after the storm hits. kenneth, janai. >> a storm that's going to be impacting the eastern seaboard throughout the week. serena marshall there in florida, thank you. let's take a closer look now at where hurricane dorian is headed.oronrns stor sue. facing the biggest threat. you see that area from melbourne all the way up to savannah, georgia, facing a possible seven-foot storm surge. accuweather's adam del rosso has been tracking the storm all night. adam, good morning. janai and kenneth, good morning. major hurricane dorian still at category 5 with sustained winds of 180 miles per hour as it

inches its way westward across the grand bahama islands. now we're going to be watching this gradually take a turn to the north as we head through early parts of the week. very slowly weakening. still a category 4 by tuesday morning then a category 3 as we head toward wednesday evening. still creating many problems along the southeast coast of the united states in terms of heavy rainfall, damaging wind gusts even though the eye wall is currently forecasted to stay off the coast. there's still going to be hurricane-force wind gusts across the carolinas at the coast as we head into the middle and tail end of the week. we're also talking about widespread flooding along the carolina coast and along the florida coast as well as we head through the week. this storm is going to create a mess and cause many problems and lots of cleanup as we head throughout the coming weeks. >> our coverage continues later this half hour with a look inside the eye of hurricane dorian, and we'll be live in the bahamas for "good morning america."

come to grips with a deadly shooting rampage. mourners gathered in odessa, texas, last night to remember seven lives cut short. a gunman opened fire on police during a routine traffic stop then took aim at random bystanders from behind the wheel. >> the 36-year-old shooter had reportedly been fired from his trucking job earlier in the day but police have not revealed a motive. the seven people killed include a teenager shopping with her

family and a 40-year-old father who was shot at a red light with his wife and two kids in the car. meanwhile, we're learning more about the baby who survived the attack. abc's andrea fujii is here with more. andrea, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, kenneth and janai. it was about an hour of terror for many people driving in texas this weekend with at least 15 different crime scenes. this morning police are still trying to figure out why it all happened. ♪ amazing grace >> reporter: solemn more than 20 wounded in another mass shooting. one of the victims, mary granados, a 29-year-old postal worker who police say was killed when her mail truck was hijacked by the shooter. her twin sister speaking out. >> when everything happened, i was talking to her on the phone. i could hear her screaming, and after that i just -- i just couldn't help her. you know, i always try to help her, and i couldn't help her.

>> reporter: it all started saturday afternoon. authorities say police pulled over 36-year-old seth ator for a traffic stop. he allegedly blasted rifle fire out his rear window hitting an officer. >> the shooter's in a toyota headed westbound towards odessa. >> reporter: police say the shooter armed with an assault-style weapon then started shooting as he was driving. reports of shootings and victims >> we ven tive shooter on thintetate. >> reporter: among the victims, 15-year-old layla hernandez shot and killed outside a car dealership and a 17-month-old baby said to be hit by shrapnel but is expected to survive. >> she is up and she's smiling and she's stable. >> reporter: police say the terd jumped into the postal truck continuing on his rampage and ended outside a movie theater in nearby midland after the shooter rammed police cars. police were then able to kill him. authorities swarmed the suspected gunman's home

investigating a motive. the second mass shooting to traumatize the state in a month. and this morning "the new york times" is reporting the suspect lost his job on the day of the attack, but it's still not clear if that contributed to his rampage. again, police are still investigating a motive, kenneth. >> andrea, thank you. and this staggering fact, at least 53 souls taken in mass shootings in august alone. just incredible. >> two of those shootings in texas, so that state hit particularly hard. well, coming up, the breaking news overnight from the crisis in hong kong. also ahead, a serious car crash involving comedian kevin hart. what police are now saying. and later, a sweet surprise from the jonas brothers for one special fan. llas. ♪ hello, are you the locksmith? yes i am. come on in. i think we were able to salvage the lock. grand bahama island has been getting hit the hardest. the storm slowed down overnight about 130 miles from west palm beach, florida. look at this video from inside the eye of the storm sunday showing the so-called stadium effect that makes the hurricane's eye look like the bowl of a sports stadium. more of our coverage coming up shortly. now we turn to the crisis in hong kong taking a new and disruptive turn. pro-democracy demonstrators blocked the road to hong kong's airport tying up traffic and forcing passengers to walk to terminals you see there with their luggage. violent clashes also broke out on the subway where police beat protesters, and violence erupted in the streets as protesters threw firebombs and bricks at security forces. abc's ian pannell watched as authorities took action. >> reporter: multiple rounds of tear gas. they're using percussion grenades. we've now got hundreds of riot police. you see the water cannon now pushing forward. >> a pro

today. and there was another subway disruption this morning. china's state media has issued a warning to protesters saying, quote, the end is coming but it did not elaborate. a new round of tariffs is taking effect as the trade war between the u.s. and china escalates. this time the u.s. is slapping 15% tax penalties on $100 billion worth of chinese goods including clothes, shoes, phones and some tvs. president trump says trade talks are still scheduled for this month. a recent study predicted the tariffs will cost the typical american family $1,000 this year. comedian kevin hart has been injured in a serious car crash. police say hart was a passenger in his own vintage muscle car when the driver lost control and rolled down an embankment in the hills above malibu, california. you can see the damage. hart suffered major back police say the driver was not under the influence. at the u.s. open defending men's champion novak djokovic is out.

he gave up in the third set of his match last night because of a left shoulder injury. some fans booed the tournament's defending champ as he left the court. meanwhile, serena williams survived a scare when she awkwardly turned her ankle. her coach said it caused an acceptable level of pain. serena won the match and advanced to the quarterfinals. sticking with sports, the houston astros' justin verlander has joined an elite club of his wife model katie upton tweeted her congrats from the venice film festival. it's the picture of two of them with a message, forever your number one fan, congrats on your third no-hitter. all right. big weekend for college football. and here's probably the most bizarre play of the season so far. jackson state scoring a touchdown, and their mascot runs up two players fighting for the ball. the team was penalized for,

heat that's going away coming up in the forecast. of course, dorian, too. >> thank you so much, mike. lots to cover and a live look at traffic conditions. it is so light outside. we love the toll plaza looking like this and a live look at the san mateo bridge. we'll breeze through it. at 4:28, new this morning, san jose police investigating a vehicle that crashed into several parked vehicles. two suvs and a truck were also ma this happened at hillsdale and orlando way. the driver approached him after the crash, provided the surveillance video. he said he asked the man if he was involved in the crash and handed him a towel. police have not yet said what led to this crash. hurricane dorian hitting the bahamas right now. >> it's already sub mirjed homes and left massive destruction in its wake. this is a live look from lake worth pier in florida from a camera provided by surf line.
