story. >> chris nguyen spoke with them. >> reporter: tonight a family grieves the loss of two of their own. >> they were the best men, the best family, the best cousins that you could have. >> reporter: san jose police say an apparent street race saturday night turned deadly after a black jeep lost control. the impact so severe, it split the jeep in half. two cousins were pronounced dead at the scene 33-year-old miguel rodriguez and ernesto. police are looking for the occupants of a gray bmw believed to have been involved. three men got out, looked at the wreckage and fled the scene. the victim's family isn't convinced street racing is to blame saying they were only a block away from the home. >> i know they would not risk their lives over some random street race going down across the street.

>> reporter: according to the san jose police officers association, street racing incidents are on the rise and until the department can fully staff traffic enforcement, the union says getting help from the community will be essential. >> it's very, very important when they do see something like that that they call immediately so we can try to get officers out to that area and hopefully prevent another tragedy from occurring. >> reporter: while nothing can bring the victims back, family members are hopeful the through suspects will do the right thing and turn themselves in. >> they reached out to so many lives and they always brought smiles to those faces. >> reporter: memorial services are being planned for the two victims, anyone with information on this case is urged to call police. reporting in san jose, i'm chris nguyen, abc 7 news. >> thank you. highway 24 had to be closed after a crane doing work at the lafayette bart station hit a power line this morning. it happened just before 5:30. the crane came in contact with power lines.

one line fell in a lane on highway 24 and the other knocked out power to 700 customers. it was a chaotic holiday morning for business owners. >> i just arrived and almost had a heart attack. i thought what is happening? is going on? i found out. pg&e restored power to all customers after 3:30 this afternoon. a bart spokesperson said it's possible the contractor and subcontractor operating the crane could be financially responsible for any claims that are filed. the coast guard and the other searchers recovered four bodies from a diving boat that caught fire and sank off the coast of southern california. they spotted four victims near the wreckage and the search continues for 26 others who were still missing. you're about to hear rescuers answering an urgent mayday call early this morning. listen. >> your vessel is on fire, is that correct? >> roger. >> can you get back on board and unlock the boat, unlock the door

to get off? >> five crew members escaped from the burning vessel, the conception. one is among the missing. the five surviving crew members jumped into the pacific ocean while the 75-foot long boat burned and sank and another boat picked them up. you can see where it happened on this map off santa cruz island. a fire chief describes the fiery scene rescuers faced when they raced to save the passengers. >> they encountered a fully involved wooden ves l. >> the crews were actively fighting the fire when the vessel began to sink at approximately 7:20 a.m. >> passengers had booked trips aboard the conception to go scuba diving off the channel islands. they were supposed to come home this morning. anchored less than 400 yards away, bob and shirley hanson woked up to panicked crew members that jumped overboard. their boat, the grape escape

helped rescue those five surviving crew members. one had a broken leg and another a twisted ankle. >> it's overwhelming and settling in as to the horror in your mind as to what went o when those people, 34 people trapped under beneath couldn't get out. >> the boat fire hit close to home for the hansons. their daughter and son-in-law had taken dive trips on the conception in the past, that very boat and a scuba instructor cannot believe the boat he's been on half a dozen times would have any trouble with safety but he told abc 7 news reporter kris reyes that the conception and its crew were admired and respected in the diving community. >> the captain and the crew do an excellent job informing people of the safety equipment. they tell everybody where the fire extinguishers are. there is more than one fire extinguisher on board, as much as they also indicate where the life vests are and the exits for

evacuation are located, as well. >> that's the experience gilroy business owner and veteran diver munos had. the boat engulfed in flames with dozens of divers inside. >> have only one thought in mind and that's that the fire had to have happened so fast that it didn't give any chance to the people who were sleeping at 3:00 or around 3:00 a chance to get to escape. >> he remembers exiting the boat from the sleeping quarters only took seconds with two easy to access routes, a set of stairs and escape ha >> right here inside the boat there is stairs that go from the bunk area to the kitchen in the main galley. as you can see, the area is well lit and right around this area is where the hatch is located. >> he is one of the founders of

she's not conscious. not breathing. >> reporter: a relative tells abc 7 news the victim is marta. a family friend set up this go fund me to raise money for her funeral expenses and describes her to abc 7 news as an amazing woman, mother of five, businesswoman and community member in east oakland. neighbors believe she was leaving a wedding reception when she was shot. >> came home, attempted to turn onto the block and realized it was police activity going on. there was a party around the corner. saw a lot of people. >> reporter: according to oakland pd an argument between several people took place up the street from where she parked. >> someone discharged the firearm and unfortunately a stray rounds fatally struck the 44-year-old victim. we are presuming that she was on her way back to her residence as she is from oakland but lives in a different area of the city. >> reporter: a neighbor says it was her neighbor that woke up and called the ambulance that the woman was shot right here. oakland p.d. says she was taken

to a nearby hospital where she ded. this afternoon investigators continued to search the street looking for cameras that may have captured the incident and lead to any information about the suspects. >> she did lose her life and we remain very diligent with our investigation to identify who is responsible for discharging that firearm. >> reporter: in oakland, abc 7 news. new at 6:00, the sight of the gilroy garlic festival will reopen tomorrow more than a month after the deadly shooting rampage that left three people dead. city officials say christmas hill park will open at 8:00 tomorrow morning. the community is invited to take part in a moment of silence at 10:30 at the temporary memorial site on the northeast section of the park. officials say access to parts of the park will be limited to allow the newly planted grass seed to establish. jurors in the ghost ship trial in oakland will be back from recess tomorrow. the judge has to decide how to handle jurors who have vacations

a chaotic security incident at newark airport in new jersey had passengers evacuating their flights and walking on the tarmac. the video shows what happened around 5:30 p.m. our time. other videos on social media show people running through the terminal leaving their bags behind. the airport hasn't provided information on just what happened. across california an oakland sacramento thousands of kizer were taken away in handcuffs. they were warned next month these protests could escalate. luz pena has both sides from

oakland. >> reporter: for a better cause, more than 1,000 kize kieze kie z who r we were protesting. >> they are protesting in los angeles and sacramento sending a message they need to get back on track and put patient care before profits. >> reporter: harvey has worked for ker for 17 years and he says his job will be terminated next year. >> how am i going to pay my mortgage? they are taking away my retirement. this will affect us greatly and will be something hard to swallow taking a 10, $15 pay cut is tough. >> reporter: among supporters was bernie sanders supporter danny glover who has a personal connection to these workers. >> my father's life as we went through kidney failure and dialys dialysis, there is a warm relationship that i have with the workers. >> reporter: among those arrested was a man that works in the surgery department.

>> you know you're about to get arrested? >> yes. i'm ready because i'm doing this for my family and my friends, and my brothers and sisters in the union. if kizer falls, it affects us all. >> reporter: on september 20 30th, the contract expired. >> what i can say is we're committed to following that accomplished practice and making sure that we can come up with a competitive contract that makes sense to both sides. >> reporter: now if both parties don't come to an agreement before october, these workers are planning to go on strike making the biggest walk out since 1997 with more than 80,000 employees nationwide. luz pena, abc 7 news. bart is scrapping paper tickets at yet another location. starting tomorrow, paper tickets will no longer be sold at the station in downtown san francisco. only clipper cards will be sold there. riders can still use disposable

tickets to get in and t. they can add enough value to exit a station but not enter one. it's the third station to sell only clipper cards following the 19th street and oakland and embarcadero stations. downtown berkeley will be next. taking a live look at san francisco international airport where free parking soon won't be what it used to be. in less than a month, the time limit for free parking will drop to ten minutes from 30 minutes now. sfo tried to extend the free parking time limit to reduce traffic congestion around the terminal but says it hasn't made enough of a difference to keep it going. starting october 1st, you can only park for free for ten minutes in the short-term parking garage. something that sounds like a children's story is becoming a serious problem for one lafayette homeowner. >> a trio of wild pigs continues their overnight invasions of his backyard leaving behind an awful lot of damage. >> laura anthony has the story. >> there is all these three.

>> reporter: you heard that right, three little pigs but it's been no fairy tale for carson lee. >> i saw them come through the wire mesh looks like it was lifted up. >> reporter: he knows he just can't call the big bad wolf. for the past week it's bedtime for the trio as they feast and leave behind a mangled mess on the lawn. >> i think they are looking for grubs, they basically dig up the grass and they just leave these giant holes in our lawn. >> reporter: lee's surveillance cameras captured the pigs on several occasions over the past seven days. they apparently gain access to his backyard via a small hole in a metal fence. >> i put these blocks here to block them. >> reporter: it's hard to tell how big they are but an expert trapper in santa clara county said they can be more than just a nuisance. >> do not try to adopt them. they are wild animals. they are unpredictable and can be dangerous at times.

it been so hot lately, a lot of the water has dried up up in the hills where they normally would stay. >> reporter: in san jose, the city counsel made it legal for an expert with a state permit to trap and shoot wild pigs after a series of wild invasions in gulf courses and residential areas but the laws vary by city and county. for now, at least, lee has opted for a non-violent method of remediation, a motion detector sprinkler that he hopes will simply scare the pigs away. so tonight you're going to give this baby a try? >> we're going to give it a try and i got a camera focused on it so hopefully we'll have new footage to show you. we kick off a new month. >> we're kicking off a new weather pattern, as well. things cool down quite a bit today from yesterday. we have mainly sunny skies but you can see on the radar image a little patchy coastal nag is devel -- fog is developing. it's 11 degrees cooler in santa rosa and hayward. 12 degrees cooler in livermore and ten degrees cooler. you get the picture. here is one reason why we have low clouds and fog pushing out over the bay now. this is a view from the tower and these are current temperature readings, 62 in san francisco and oakland and 677 redwood city. 67 at half moon bay. nice view from mount tam. napa 76 and petaluma 71 and 77 livermore and blue sky over the golden gate, a feature we don't see at this time of the evening.

on we go, very warm inland again tomorrow. gradual cooling will begin, it's already begun and will continue on wednesday and we'll have mild to warm weather going into the weekend. overnight look for a few patches of fog. most of it will stay along the coastline and clear inland with overnight lows in the 50s to low 60s and here is the forecast animation showing you how that fog makes its push out over the bay. morning computers 5:00 tomorrow will not encounter much in the way of reduced visibility, just a little fog over the bay. that's about it. it will burn back to the coastline giving us a mainly sunny day tomorrow and pleasant. the day planner looks something like this. early morning hours lingering clouds out of here by noon but will linger at the coast but not over inland areas. so from noon right on through the remainder of the day into the evening, mainly sunny skies except for a little lingering fog at the coast and high temperatures will bounce up into the low 90s in the warmest inland areas tomorrow. over in the inland east bay 92.

concord 93 and antioch at the north bay high of 90 and santa rosa a high of 86 at san jose. around the bay shoreline, 77 oakland 82 freed monmont. here is the seven-day forecast. after well, wednesday, it's going to be pretty much a steady pattern with not much flexuation in the temperature range at all. so for wednesday through next monday, look for highs inland topping out between 88 and 90. around the bay shoreline 76 to 78 as the range of highs and on the coast, 64, 64, 64. >> 64. his phone to save power. >> we just pray that we can come out of this once we come out of it with our lives, we're happy. >> reporter: small snippets on social media are all the world has seen so far of the bahamas. now a waste land of shredded homes and shattered lives as dorian sat right above them showing no mercy. >> it really feels like you helpless and that you have to depend on the mercy of the good lord who have spoken over nature. >> reporter: no one can control this storm but hurricane hunters released this video as they flue through it trying to gather dat to determine where it will go next. the consensus is it will pass off the florida coast where the storm's effects are obvious. south florida is having experiences like this all day today, squalls coming off dorian lashing the coast with rain and wind.

>> you live on the beach? >> reporter: if it wobbles west, there will be no time to get out so barrier islands up and down the coast are evacuate in a waiting gail that's gone on fordays and may last through t end of the week. >> not trust rated. just thankful it appears the worst will stay away. >> reporter: to put things in perspective, all that devastation in freeport in the bahamas is 80 miles away from where i'm standing now. the storm will have to thread that needle and that's why emergency managers are so concerned because one small job to the west could mean a big difference here. in dell ray beach, florida, abc 7 news. >> all right. so spencer has been tracking the storm. >> the question is spencer, if it continues to track away from the u.s. coast? >> the appears that way now. as josh pointed out one slight jog to the west could mean trouble for people living along the east coast of florida and u.s. here is a look at the storm now and unbelievably massive and powerful and dangerous storm

that has moved almost not at all today, nearly stationary over the bahamas. category four hurricane with maximum sustained winds at 140 miles per hour and gusts to 165. now this is the projected path expected to begin moving again tomorrow and take a northward turn remaining offshore and moving up near the coastline of eastern florida and then moving northeast ward skirting the coastline of georgia and the carolinas before finally moving further away from the new england and northeastern coastline. now hurricane watch in effect for part of southern florida just around the fort lauderdale area, hurricane warning -- sorry, that's a tropical storm watch, tropical storm warning for the area from fort lauderdale to west palm beach and then get to the hurricane warning from north of palm beach all the way to jacksonville, even a hurricane watch for much of the coastal areas of georgia and south carolina. finally the storm is expected to spin way out to sea at the end

>> 2017. >> my car is running pretty good. >> reporter: how is your car run sng. >> so far so good. >> reporter: that's a common experience these days and here is someone who knows about these things. san francisco consumer protection attorney mark anderson. >> cars have gotten much more reliable and so you don't have the pattern of repeated repairs for the same defect and still not resolved. >> reporter: anderson is one of the nation's most prominent lemon law attorneys representing consumers in more than 4,000 cases. he says better cars are part of the reason consumers are filing fewer lemon law cases. cars have changed and the car makers have changed with them. >> the manufacturers understandably got sick of being sued. they will if a customer calls up for example general motors, they will often just buy back the car and give them their money back pursuant to the lemon law. they don't have to hire a

>> here at abc 7 we're mourning the lose of one of our own. lorne ross. >> he spent 38 years with us and passed away over the weekend after a long battle with cancer. >> morrison was born in canada in 1948 and grew up in new york city but in the '70s he headed for san francisco and never looked back. hi he attended the art institute. in 1981 he landed a job as a news photographer here at abc 7 where he spent the last 38 years covering events, big and small all over the bay area. >> we went through every natural disaster you can think of, firestorms, earthquakes, and we walked in on a lot of bad guys together. one time we were actually shot at when we were doing a report. and through all of this, loran is always the coolest guy in the

room. i knew him well. he was a gentleman, part professor, part fashion plate with the perfect hat for every occasion and jacket for that matter and he adored his children, daughter bunny and son gavin but he was a hard boiled news man with a particular flair for picking up information on the policescanner. >> he had been around for so long, he could tell voices on the police radios and he always knew what was going on behind the scenes. >> reporter: abc 7 news anchor eric thomas remembers 25 years ago when he started at abc 7 and loren was his pen tomentor. >> he was on a first-name basis but treated everyone with equal grace and respect regardless of status. loren was one of the most smartest men i ever knew. >> when word got out loren was ill, the san francisco police chief came to visit. >> loren was one of the best

photographers i ever worked with and he always managed to get the best out of me and make the most of the stories we were on together and had many conversations over the years. many of those conversations were deep in personal. >> he was always focussing his lens and often his reporters on what connects us. not what separates us. that empathetic outlook was in full force in 1990 when former abc 7 news entertainment reporter paul nguyen was diagnosed with aids. at that time, death sentence but lorne pushed paul to talk to the audience what it was like to have aids. lorne shot the video and paul told his story. >> if you think you don't know anybody with aids, you do now. >> years later, i asked lorne about that project. all of this talk today about fake news, alleged fake news and watch what you and paul and this
