whewere there life jackets, life boats. >> a preliminary investigation in ten days and a final report in 12 to 24 months. >> we also learned today that many of the victims had ties to northern california and the bay area. and there's this chilling bit of information. one family lost five people in this disaster. let's begin our coverage with abc 7 news reporter wayne freedman live in stockton. wayne? >> reporter: sierra middle school is a place that has been touched by this tragedy much of the surprise students, teachers, parents, staff members heard the news this morning. they're still trying to process it. by the time classes let out at sierra middle school in stockton today it seemed unbelievable and yet unavoidable that yesterday's boat tragedy could hit home here with pain so broad and such a well known and loved victim. >> she was good.

she was kind. a good teacher. >> reporter: angela was a science teacher, one of five members from one family who perished in yesterday morning's fire. two of her sisters worked locally as nurses. they perished along with their father and stepmother. the losses now reverberate through this region. >> you can never imagine it could be this close and hit our community. it's unimaginable. >> reporter: and very real and difficult to process. for an 11-year-old who remembers angela with such warmth. what do you remember about her? >> that she had purple hair. >> reporter: really? >> yeah. >> reporter: so she was cool? >> mm-hmm. >> reporter: cool how? >> like, she was funny and would crack funny jokes. she at unity day was dancing with us. >> reporter: we heard a lot of stories like that from people today who just didn't want to talk about this on camera. they're still too touched by it. there was a statement today from

the lincoln unified school district that said angela had worked at this high school, junior high school, middle school, for four years. it was a homecoming of sorts. she had been a student in this district going up. live in stockton, wayne freedman, abc 7 news. >> she sounds great. wayne, thanks very much. the brother of one of the divers on conception spoke out today with heartfelt words about his sister. she was a beloved member of the santa cruz community. her company worldwide diving adventures is based there. abc 7 news reporter kris reyes has that part of our coverage tonight. kris? >> reporter: good evening, dan and kristen. santa cruz is a city reeling from this tragedy. they've lost several members of their community and they're still waiting to hear more information. one of those people a well-known local diver and students who went to school in the area. >> my sister was one of the most skilled and intuitive, vibrant,

loving, compassionate women that i've ever met in my life. she had a skill set that many don't have, a survival skill set. and i know that if there was a 1% window of opportunity for her to make it out, that she would have somehow made that opportunity become a reality. >> reporter: that's the brother of kristy finstad who was leading the group onboard the dive boat conception. finstad also worked for the city of santa cruz from 2005 to 2015. >> she did watershed conservation and education and worked with the team and was just described as an incredible person, incredible asset to the team. >> reporter: two more victims from santa cruz, the heed of pacific collegiate school confirmed her students were onboard conception. >> today is going to be a difficult day. i think that young people in particular have a variety of ways of responding and we're

prepared for whatever they bring to school this morning. >> it pains us. it pains our city. it's painful no matter who it is. it's our city. it's our residents. it's their families that are experiencing this tragedy. we mourn with them. >> reporter: now we've been here all day talking to local dive shop owners. they did not want to go on camera. they're still trying to process this tragedy. they had heavy hearts. they will reach out as they begin to organize ways to support those affected. kris reyes, abc 7 news. as we learn more, we'll make sure to keep you updated especially when we find out how and why this happened g. to abc7news.com to know what we know so far and get updates sent right to your smartphone. and developing news, a wildfire burning in the santa cruz mountains. that fire broke out along deer creek road in boulder creek.

so far cal fire estimates the flames have charred about ten acres. sky 7 flew above the scene while crews tried to stop the fire from reaching a home. it appears that flames gutted at least one other building. the highway patrol has closed part of bear creek road near where the fire is still burning. another threat, hurricane dorian now a category 2 storm is beginning to lash the florida coast. storm surge warnings are posted all the way to north carolina. the hurricane devastated the bahamas and hovered over the islands for nearly two days causing unprecedented destruction. just look at that. submerging an airport, leveling buildings and killing at least five people. the bohemian consul general says the greatest need now is for water, nonperishable food, generators and tents. the u.s. is providing humanitarian assistance. >> with dorian finally on the move after hanging over the bahamas, attention now shifts to the united states. >> meteorologist sandhya patel.

>> look at the eye of the storm on satellite as we show you radar here. you will notice on doppler radar the bands of heavy rains starting to move on to the east coast of florida, they are seeing strong winds in the area as well, winds 110 miles an hour, maximum sustained, gusts even higher than that it is it ontinues along the coastline. wednesday morning it's still a category storm 2 storm surge, flooding rain and strong winds will be the biggest threat. a category 2 thursday morning. weaken to go a category 1 but this storm is going to hang around for days, and it is still a dangerous storm. >> thank you. >> the mother of the son who rammed the gate is talking this morning. >> his body was found in the bay yesterday. abc 7 news reporter has the

story you'll only see on abc 7 news. >> i want someone to know my son for what he was besides those 15 seconds of a bad decision. >> reporter: seconds that ended his life according to the alameda county sheriff's department. he fled from deputies after failing to yield at a traffic stop at oakland international airport. he later ran through a gate that led to the tarmac. he was also seen jumping into the san francisco bay. his body was found yesterday. >> he had drug induced schizophrenia, paranoia disorder. that creates that situation. >> reporter: his mom says this was called by mental health and a drug addiction. she believes he had a mix of multiple drugs in his system. prior to sunday she says he had been sober for seven years. >> i had great recovery. he built a beautiful life for himself. and whatever triggered it, it's done. it's the end of a beautiful

life, a beautiful boy. >> reporter: now prior to the incident, alameda county sheriff says he was seen driving around the airport. his mom says she missed three calls from him. she believes he was hallucinating. what did he say in the voice mail? >> he said he loved me. >> reporter: initially the alameda county sheriff expressed concerns about a nexus to terrorism after finding air soft weapons inside his car. today they sent this statement. the loss of mr. hirano is very unfortunate and we express our sincere condolences to his family. we wish we had an opportunity to intervene and get him the help he needed. prevention and intervention are key to saving lives. meanwhile, his grieving mother is holding on to the good memories of ryan, graduating from rehab and celebrating mother's day with her. >> he was a better person. 15 seconds to snuff out a life. not very much.

after a 12-day hiatus, three new jurors, they are back in deliberations and serious questions how much deliberating they'll actually do in the month of september. >> abc 7 news reporter leslie brinkley is live in oakland with the very latest. leslie? >> reporter: this is the fourth day of deliberations with this reconstituted jury panel after the three were dismissed for misconduct a couple weeks ago. as one defense attorney put it today, there are lots of

questions about that and can this jury, can they recall all the details of testimony from all the way back in may. the five-man and seven-woman panel trooped back into the courtroom for 15 minutes after the end of their summer break. >> they seem introspective in the short period of time they were in court. they, therefore, are participating in, you know, the gravest portion of their deliberation. they're voting right now. >> reporter: such is the guess of derick almena's attorney but there's no telling how close they are to a decision. they face 36 counts for the 36 lives that were with only one alternate juror left there's a looming problem

of vacations. the judge says one juror indicated they have a vacation plant with another juror indicating they're unavailable september 19th until october 5th. that would leave only six days of deliberation in the entire month of september. >> my understanding is she hasn't ruled or indicated if the jurors will be permitted to take the vacations. it's a wait-and-see approach. >> reporter: so the afternoon ended no juror questions, no verdict and, of course, the looming question is with all those conflicts could there be a mistrial? that's something everyone's hoping to avoid. in oakland, leslie brinkley, abc 7 news. >> leslie, thank you. widespread manufacturing problems caused a shortage of e

ahead. as we look at a live picture from our sutro tower camera there is fog rolling in over san francisco. we look back to sutro tower. it was warmer today across the bay area. redwood city, 83. a live look from santa cruz and it's gorgeous out there. the sun is shining. 86 in santa rosa. it is 91 in fairfield and concord and 88 in livermore. a nice day to go out sailing. a chance of dry lightning and it is going to be a gradual cooling trend that takes us through saturday. hour by hour forecast. we're seeing higher clouds moving in all in association with the monsoon moisture. we'll be watching this carefully for you. mike nicco tracking this.
