it's like i'm in a bad dream. >> a grim reality. a mother in the north bay is among those who lost someone in the diving boat disaster. the recovery effort called off for the night. and heading into the storm zone. we're with local rescue crews as they gear up to help as hurricane dorian accelerates towards florida. abc7 news starts right now. >> now news to build a better bay area, from abc7. >> 20 bodies have been recovered. 14 people are still missing after the dive boat in southern california caught fire and sank. tonight we're learning more about who was on board. >> new at 11:00, the mother of one of the victims who lived in mill valley spoke to abc7 news reporter kate larsen. indicate? >> alma, dan, nancy, her only

salvation is believing that her daughter died peacefully in her sleep after a beautiful day of diving. >> lisa texted me sunday night. >> and what did she say? >> she said i'm having a great time. beautiful spot. >> hours later, before dawn on monday morning, the diving boat lisa fiedler was on caught fire and sank in southern california's channel islands. lisa's mother nancy fiedler, who didn't want to appear on camera lives in korda madera and spoke to me time. she assumes her only child was board, one of 44 people trapped aboard the conception. >> everybody loved her. she was a kind, gentle person. she loves nature. >> reporter: lisa grew up in michigan but moved to marin as an adult. the 52-year-old was a hairdresser in mill valley and a photographer. her stunning photographs seen on her website. she was also an after individual diver. >> she loved the water. she was a pisces. she said i think i'm part fish. >> reporter: beyond the pain of losing her daughter, nancy is trust rated at the lack of information she has received

from officials. she also has questions about the five crewmembers assigned to sleep on the deck who did escape from the burning boat. >> why did the crew get off? you know, they had -- i heard they had to swim around to get a dinghy, and then they went to get help. but that was valuable time lost. why didn't they -- unless they couldn't get past the flames. i don't know. >> so nancy tells me she gave law enforcement a description of her daughter, and now she just has to wait for a dna result to confirm her daughter's death. back to you. >> okay, kate, thank you. >> just tragic. and a teacher from los altos is among those lives lost. >> amanda del castillo is in the south bay tonight where many communities are feeling the heartbreak. amanda? >> yeah, dan, am marks according to family members and official statements, more than a handful of victims lived, worked and even thrived in several cities in the south bay. they were students, siblings, parents and teacher, all with a

knack for adventure. fremont unified school district confirms scott chan, an ap physics teacher who spent the last three years at american high school was on board the conception with his daughter. it's news students and staff are still processing. >> i felt in disbelief. whoa, a teacher died? >> reporter: chan's death is touching the close-knit diving community in sunnyvale. >> he would come in here on a regular basis, rent equipment, filling up his tanks and things like that, talk about diving. and he'd frequent the boat downs in the channel islands on a regular basis. >> reporter: chan's family lives in los head of school maria reitano says they're using county resources to provide a much needed network of support to the community. >> we're a small school. we're very tight knit. i anticipate that everyone in our school community, student, staff, families will be deeply affected. >> christy finstad was the first to be named by family as one of

the 44 victims aboard the dive boat. her brother identified her in a facebook post on monday. on tuesday he wrote it is likely she has transitioned to be with the good lord. the marin biologist, diving instructor and co-owner of worldwide diving adventures out of santa cruz was leading a group of divers aboard the conception. >> were whole life has been an adventure. >> those within the diving community tell us the tragedy on this scale is unheard of. the u.s. coast guard has not yet released the names of the victims. in the south bay, i'm amanda del castillo, abc7 news. >> thank you, amanda. among those who died when the conception burst into flames were five members of the same family. a birthday celebration turned tragic for five members of the same family rooted in stockton. michael kequitasol and his wife died along with their three daughters. >> they're going to be so missed. >> angela rose quitasol taught science at a middle school. her students remember her for

her purple held. nicole quitasol lived in san diego and worked as a bartender. her coworkers and customers comforted one another. evan quitasol worked as a nurse in stockton. mike kohls worked as a galley cook. he leaves behind a daughter. his brother is relatives stricken with grief. >> it's very surreal at the moment. >> reporter: a family member said patricia beltsinger and neil baltz, quote, went to heaven doing something they loved together. the couple lived in the phoenix area. they went on diving trips five or six times a year. ohio native alexandra kurtz went by the nickname allie. the 25-year-old's mother said her daughter loved to dive, and quote, she could do anything she wanted. >> we also learned the names of two more victims a short time ago. diving enthusiasts marybeth guiney and charles mcilvaine. they both lived in the same

condo come lex in santa monica. 39 people were on board the boat when the fire started around 3:00 a.m. yesterday. there are five survivors, all members of the ship's crew. the bodies of 20 victims have been recovered. other bodies have been spotted in the water but have not yet been retrieve. identifying the victims may require dna analysis. developing news on the investigation into the fire. investigators have cordoned off the area where the boat sank off santa cruz island. the ntsb says it will take at least a year before they have a final report on what happened. but in the next seven to ten day, they'll issue their preliminary findings. >> i am 100% confident that our investigators will determine the cause of this fire, why itocrr >> during the investigation, ntsb will intervw suiv first responders and the companies involved in the diving trip. if investigators uncover any

safety issues, the agency will issue immediate recommendations to protect the public from similar accidents. >> as new information is released about why and how the fire happened, we will keep you updated. go to abc7news.com to see what we know so far and download the abc7 news app for instant updates. a lot of finger-pointing after a crane knocked out power to 700 customers in lafayette yesterday. a crew was working at the bart station there. san leandro crane company biggie says the crane operator was told to back up, but the person who told him to back up may not have seen the power line. the ghost ship jury is back after a break. >> we have this reconstituted jury, this new jury panel that has only been deliberating for about four days after three jurors were dismissed for misconduct a couple of weeks ago. and the question that remains is can this panel, can they really remember all the testimony they heard starting back in may.

>> they seem fine. they seem solemn. they seem introspeculative in the short time they were in court. a fire in the santa cruz mountains is holding at about 10 acres in very steep terrain. it broke out near deer creek road. more than 150 firefighters will remain on the line overnight. only on 7, the mother of the man who rammed his car through a gate at oakland international airport sunday says her son had drug-induced schizophrenia. the alameda county sheriff's office says after 42-year-old brine hirano crashed through the gate and jumped into the bay, his body was found yesterday. hirano's mother spoke exclusively to abc7 news. she said prior to sunday he had been sober for seven years. >> he had great recover. he built a beautiful life for himself. and whatever triggered it, it's -- it's done. it's the end of a beautiful life and a beautiful boy. >> hirano left a voice mail for

developing news on dorian. the storm lashing florida's east coast. the hurricane has devastated the bahamas. the death toll there is at seven. reporter josh einiger has the very latest. >> the waves pounded florida's east coast today, carving away at the beach. on the mainland, the intracoastal waterway overflowed its banks. but as floridians ventured out in the storm, one thing was on their mind, that they got off easy. >> oh, yeah, oh, definitely. i feel bad for the people that are in the bahamas. >> the bahamas. dorian took the abaco islands and grand bahama, took those island paradises and practically wiped them off the map. with no access by first responders, everyday people used jet skis to rescue their neighbors. >> get everybody.

we're bahamians. we're not going to stop until we get everybody. >> the water rose so fast, the rain and winds so unrelenting, people had to swim to safety. in freeport, a man, his daughter and son waded through chest-deep water with their dogs as they left their home. others weren't so lucky. this man tried to ride the storm out with his wife as the water rose. >> and she was standing on top of the kitchen cabinets until they disintegrated. and i kept with her, and she just drowned on me. >> i'm so sorry. >> i know. >> it's really just so chilling hearing the accounts from the survivors of this storm, and many more accounts will come out in the days and weeks to come, paying extremely close attention, of course, are people who live on the carolina coast and the georgia coast. those folks are now in the bulls-eye themselves of this monster storm, and they are preparing for the worst. in delray beach, florida, josh

einiger, abc7 news. new at 11:00, urban search and rescue teams from the east bay, north bay and peninsula left for north carolina tonight to help with hurricane dorian. abc7 news reporter lisa amin gulezian has a look at how they'll help. >> you're now federal employees. you're no longer working for berkeley, san ramon or oakland. >> teams prepare to head straight for hurricane dorian. a lot has to happen before the actual deployment can take place. first, the bags have to be loaded on the this truck. after that, everyone stands in this line and they get a health screening. moving these specialized teams is no easy feat. it requires a lot of equipment, tool, and time. the deployment is for 14 to 21 days. >> we expect that we will see a fair amount of flooding. depending on the storm itself, there may be wind damage also that will cause search to be much more complicated, which is rea swift water rescue component. so each of the teams is bringing several inflatable rescue boats with us so that we can perform

rescues in the moving water. >> for many, the hardest part of the deployment will be missing home. >> my daughter's fifth birthday is on sunday. >> it's always hard to be gone for family. but we're going there for a duty. and we're occasin obligation to those in need. >> they'll get a few hours of rest before heading into the field. lisa amin gulezian, abc7 news. now hurricane dorian is still a dangerous category 2 storm with winds of 110 miles per hour. the latest from the hurricane center, it is passing just to the east of cape canaveral, florida, making a little bit more of a northward turn. wave heights right now just off the coast, 35 feet. this large storm really churning up the waves. live doppler 7 tracking some bands of heavy rain over d-back, and that is going to continue. as what storm rides up along the coastline, some heavy rain expected 12 to 18 inches along the carolina coastline. this category 2,

the nation's worst measles outbreak in 20 years. governor newsom has pledged to sign the bill into law. now we're taking a closer look at the rest of our weather. >> meteorologist sandhya patel is back with our forecast. >> and our forecast looks fantastic. today those temperatures came up few degrees. they're going to be going down over the coming days. i want to show you speaking of going down, the sunett set was absolutely gorgeous tonight. this is from our east bay hills camera, as we look towards the west there. the sun setting, and there wasn't much fog around. tonight it's the same thing. the marine layer is very shallow. temperatures right now the 60s and 70s. live doppler 7 showing you patches of fog along our coastline, but it's not a solid deck that will be changing. what we're watching is an area of low pressure that is spinning here along the coastline. and as it continues to spin, we're going to see the effects of it in the form of deeper marine layer and some monsoon moisture. so tomorrow morning, 5:00 a.m.,

it's not going to be a deep marine layer. just some patchy fog. as we head into 8:00 a.m., the fog's around. high clouds are starting to come in from the south. you will notice over the sierra some thunderstorms firing up there. is a small possibility that tomorrow we may see some dry lightning. i just want to make you aware of this. it will all depend on how far the moisture moves in our direction. here is a look at what you can expect as we head into the next fe basically, fog will be limited first thing tomorrow morning. filtered sunshine. we are looking at hazy skies tomorrow. slight possibility of thunder and a gradual cooling trend through saturday. so every day we'll lose a few degrees. here is a live look from our emeryville camera. it is gorgeous looking across towards the eastern span of the bay bridge. tomorrow morning, patchy fog. a few high clouds. temperatures anywhere from the mid 50s to the low 60s. out the door should be comfortable. and then for the afternoon, it's going to be nice. breezy along the coastline. 70 in san francisco. across the bay in oakland, 76
