direction. developing news. hurricane dorian is moving northward and now it's dangerously close to florida. this is aftevastation in the ba. we want to take you live now to florida. more than ten airports there are closed as the storm moves in. in the bahamas we're getting our first look at the destruction that dorian caused. the storm hovered over that area for two days. residents there are now facing the grim aftereffects of the strongest hurricane to hit the island nation. >> my poor little wife got hypothermia. she was standing on top of the kitchen cabinets until they disintegrated. then i kept with her and she just drown on me. >> oh, my gosh. so at least seven people have died. the prime minister in the bms says this is the greatest national crisis in the country's history. >> just awful. this morning we're learn more details about the heroes in dorian's path. one woman sheltered 97 dogs in

her home as the storm lashed the bahamas. the woman says her home took on water. the dogs were scared. all of them are safe this morning. people in the bahamas have a long recovery ahead of them. disney, which is our parent company at abc 7 is donating $1 million to relief and recovery efforts. donations can be made by calling 1-800-red-cross. you can text the word dorian to 90999. that will automatically donate $10 or donate through our website, abc7news.com. new overnight, at least one person is dead after a crash in san mateo county. it happened just before 1:30 on highway 101 near marsh road. chp is telling us one car went off the freeway and down feet feet. it's not clear what caused the car to crash. the search and recovery effort continues following the deadly dive boat fire off southern california's coast. the remains of 20 victims have

been recovered. 14 others will officially missing but are believed to have died when the 75-foot charter boat burst into flames before it sank. investigators say the passengers were tlapd in a sleeping deck when flames apparently blocked a stairway and escape hatch. we spoke to a mother of one of the victims who lived in mill valley. jobina fortson joins us with that part of the story. >> a mill valley mother is over come by grief. her daughter, lisa field her, was on conception when it caught fire and sank in southern california's channel islands. lisa's mother, nancy field her, who didn't want to appear on camera, pre soups her only child is dead, as one of the 34 people trapped aboard the diving vessel. nancy field her tells us her daughter loved the water, nature and texted her sunday night saying she was having a great time on the boat. now nancy wants to know why the five crew members managed to escape conception and no one

a small craft advisory as we talked about just a few minutes ago north of the bay bridge. here is a look at the north bay, 50s at 7:00, 60s at 9:00, 70s at 11:00, low to mid 80s during the afternoon hours. in the east bay cloudy through 9:00. mid 70s this afternoon. for san francisco, we'll be pretty much stuck in the mid to upper 60s from the coast to the bay as we head through the afternoon hours. more on that chance of a thunderstorm coming up next. here is frances. two traffic alerts you need to know about causing big delays. one is on the peninsula. the first one is southbound 101 at marsh road. we have a caltrans camera. it's turned around so we're looking in the southbound direction, a fatal accident blocks the right lane as well as mash-road on-ramp to southbound 101. it's causing slowing in the area. the other big trouble spot is in fremont, northbound 880 at auto mall parkway, all lanes blocked. waze is saying it's causing

47-minute delays. it's so bad that traffic is affected on the southbound side. that's a crawl as well as you approach the scene. out of america's 100 largest cities, oakland is almost the worst place to drive. >> wallet hub compared things like driver friendliness, gas prices, annual hours spent in traffic and infrastructure. oakland, get this, came in at 99th. san francisco, san jose and fremont all placed in the bottom 25. the absolute worst place to drive, according to this study is detroit. so we can say -- >> almost the worst, but not quite. new information in the college admissions cheating scandal this morning. plus the search for the person who robbed a woman

welcome back everyone. we're tracking a major traffic alert in the east bay. sky 7 just arrived over the scene. you can see this video. a little tough to see. you can basically see what's going on. this is northbound interstate 880 in fremont where all the lanes are blocked after a crash there. the backup is going to be at least 45 minutes. frances is tracking the alternate routes and we'll give you an update in just a few minutes. we wanted to show you what that scene is looking like if you need to head through that area.

dramatic new video shows a heart stopping close call in oklahoma. an suv with a u-haul trailer spins out of control and takes out two men standing in the median. those two men are okay, only a few bruises somehow. officials say this is a good reminder to slow down when the roads are slick. now to the north bay, the city of mill valley is struggling to keep its school bus program. according to the marin ij only 165 bus passes have been chld the goal was 235. the city is responsible for the financial shortfall. the program was designed to reduce traffic congestion. neighbors are invited to a meeting at city hall to discuss options for the program. a new court filing unveils new details on the college admissions scandal. court filings included emails from the athletic department to the dean of admissions.

the emails had spread sheeds listing applicant names and donated sums. usc says no athletic department official has the authority to compel admissions decisions. however, various departments are allowed to designate some applicants to be of special interest. happening today, the ntsb will release its final report of a crash of a tesla in l.a. last year. the driver said he was following a large vehicle that suddenly changed lanes because of a stopped fire truck that was in the csh rse qst about the auto pilot system. the tesla involved in the crash didn't breake even though the system was on. steph and ayesha curry are teaming up for a new golf tournament. >> in harding park on september

weekend. we have 90s out there in places like morgan hill and gilroy. a nice 84 in san jose, 83 in cupertino. we've got mid to upper 70s for most of the peninsula today. that's pretty comfortable. 82, maybe a little less in redwood city. same in los altos. temperatures in the mid 60s. mainly gray along the coast with a few pockets of sunshine here and there. 70 to 73 on the bay side for downtown and south san francisco. sausalito 73. we'll have 66 to 67 along the north bay coast with a partly sunny sky. breezy conditions off the san pablo bay will keep you in the north bay valleys in the mid to upper 80s. cloverdale northward, no effect there. the breezes keeping up in the mid to upper 70s for most of the east bay. hercules, orinda and fremont in the low to mid 80s. upper 80s from walnut creek through san ramon, pleasanton, towards livermore. low 90s from concord to mid 90s around brentwood. tonight we'll be in the mid 50s to low 60s.

comfortable once again. a couple degrees of cooling for thursday and friday. nthing like the loolest weather on saturday. frances. we have a traffic alert for an accident on northbound 880 at auto mall parkway. sky 7 is live over the scene. all lanes of northbound 880 at auto mall parkway are blocked. we're hearing from the chp they hope to reopen some of the lanes shortly. right now it is causing hour-long delays if you're traveling northbound. in fact, your best bet is to get off at mission boulevard and take city streets to stephenson and get back on. southbound 880 also impacted, very slow approaching the scene. the over traffic alert is on the peninsula in menlo park, southbound 101 at marsh road. traffic is slow because of a fatal accident blocking the right lane. marsh road on-ramp to southbound 101 also blocked. the chp does not know when they expect to clear this. we have another injury crash westboundleverage.

"good morning america" is coming up at 7:00. ginger zee is in jupiter, florida with a look at what's hey head. >> good morning. this morning on jupiter beach, a very different scene than the last couple mornings because the storm is just to our north. it has passed. now we're feeling the offshore winds. we've regained at least 50 yards because of the offshore winds. now the piling of water, the hefty gusts, up to near 70 miles an hour have been felt just north of me on the east coast of florida. that's not where the main concern is live. this morning we're concerned about what this storm can do from charleston through myrtle beach, wilmington and the outer banks. i'm actually going to be headed up there today. we're going to be tracking the storm, the storm surge, the rainfall and, of course, where it goes. we'll finally be done with this thing by the time we reach the

6:24 on a wednesday. here is dorian, category 2, gusts up to 125 miles per hour. it is drifting towards florida and georgia. so heavy rainfall is going to be a bigger issue as we head throughout the day. also beach erosion, seven-foot swells and up to a foot and a half of rain. we haven't seen the worst of this yet, at least not in the united states. >> mike, thank you. in the north bay, novato police need your help finding a robber who stole a would plan's purse right from off her shoulder. is a six-car accident we're told, blocking all lanes. this is happening on northbound 880. this is at auto mall parkway. that is where they are diverting traffic. a really rough commute if you have to use northbound 880, something to avoid if you can. we're making our way there and we'll get you mipictures as soo as we can get on the scene. back to you. >> amy, thank you. a lot of finger-pointing this morning over a crane accident that knocked out power to 700 customers in lafayette. a crew knocked down a power line on monday. san leandro crane company says the person was told to back up. the person who told him to back up may not have seen the line. three separate investigations are under way. this morning, 34 people are presumed dead after the dive boat off the southern california coast caught fire and sank. the remains of 20 victims have been recovered. other bodies have been spotted in the ought wear but haven't been retrieved yet.

identifying the victims may take dna analysis. the ntsb says it will issue preliminary findings within seven to ten days. >> i'm 100% confident that our investigators will determine the cause of this fire, why it occurred, and what is needed to keep it from happening again. >> ntsb will interview survivors, first responders and the companies involved in the diving trip. investigators believe the 34 victims were trapped in the sleeping deck when those flames apparently blocked a stairway and an escape hatch. we're learning a majority of the victims presumed to have died in the fire were from the bay area. >> abc 7 news reporter jobina fortson is live in the studio with what we know so far. >> kumasi and reggie, i want to show you a.p. physics teacher scott chan. he taught at american high school. the fremont unified school district says chan and his daughter were victims of the boat fire. also on board the conception

investigated google after privacy groups complained that youtube illegally collected data from users under 13 years old. earlier this week we told you the ftc approved the settlement. dropping news as hurricane dorian takes aim at the east coast. live doppler 7 is going to show you how the storm is moving close to florida after causing historic devastation in the bahamas. abc news reporter serena marshall is live in new smyrna beach this morning. good morning, serena. >> reporter: good morning to both of you. the rain conditions here, the wind has really settled down. overnight we saw some of those heavy tropicl storm force gusts. that's not the case as the storm moves further north. the evacuation orders remain in effect up the coast into the outer banks of north carolina. hurricane dorian turning its fury on florida, already knocking out power to thousands. >> right now you can see in front of this light here how bad the conditions are getting.

>> reporter: in the bahamas we're getting our first look at the scope of disaster and ut ter destruction dorian caused. after stalling, spinning over these islands for more than 48 hours. >> going through it was terrifying. we're happy to be alive. glad my family is safe. >> reporter: homes left splintered, water engulfing the island. this is what grand bahama looked like before, and now after, most of the island under water. the coast guard helping out, leading search and rescue efforts. the death toll at seven and expected to climb. more than 60,000 people will be in need of food and clean water. stateside up and down the coast, evacuation orders remain. >> this is a very serious storm and a western shift that is towards land of just a few miles could bring enormous damage. >> the threat of storm surge in

5:00. here is a look at the winds, up to 40 miles per hour in titusville. that's not bad considering that when you get around the eye, we're 105 to 125 sustained gusts with this category 2 hurricane. as it drifts to the northwest, winds will become more of an issue. so is the rain around brunswick and savannah, georgia this evening. throw the south carolina coast to the north carolina coast. after that, by friday we'll be looking at nova scotia and rip currents up and down the east bay shore throughout the next couple days because of that. rainfall amounts, you can see they'll be greatest right along the carolina coast and into the georgia coast. in fact, from taibbi island, hilton head, buford and up towards myrtle beach, we'll talk about 18 inches of rain. that rain on top of a swell of seven feet means we'll have a ton of flooding. that's usually what kills most people in a hurricane. we're not out of the woods by any means, even though the storm is significantly weaker than

when it ravaged the bahamas. lengths bliring in frances. the first incident on the peninsula, southbound 101 past marsh road. the caltrans camera has been turned around. traffic jammed from woodside to marsh because of this fatal accident. at one point all lanes of traffic were bloksd. your best bet, maybe take 280 as an alternate. the other bad spot is in fremont, on the other side of the bay, northbound 880. six-car pileup blocked all lanes past auto mall parkway for over an hour now. traffic is jammed approaching the scene. southbound traffic also heavy. the chp is hoping to reopen some of the lanes in the next 10 to 15 minutes. they finally got the tow trucks at the scene and they're frying trying to clear the ca

in the east bay, police hope surveillance video will lead them to thieve who stole about 60 computers from a school? oakland over the weekend. abc 7 news was at hark ham elementary. once inside, the thieves pride open storage lockers, yanked chrome books from their security locks. >> the computers were individually attached inside the cart. so they had to break through that security as well. they made off with 60 of them and also broke at least a couple. this is one of them over here. you can see how shattered that screen is. >> this is the third school break-in in a month. school officials alerted pawn shops to be on the lookout for laptops with oakland unified stickers and serial numbers. the damage and laptop theft will cost the district about $10,000. now your morning money report. new support for uber and lyft drivers. governor newsom is calling on state lawmakers to pass

how is the commute, frances? >> it's a mess out the. one trfile northboundl lanes ret ankehe cee the right lane is open. what a mess in the left lanes from lanes. delays have been from half an hour to an hour in the northbound direction. your best bet is to get off at mission boulevard and get back on at stevenson, take city streets and avoid that mess altogether. southbound traffic also heavy approaching the scene. we have another hot spot, a fatal accident on the peninsula, southbound 101 at marsh. traffic is heavy from woodside marsh on-ramp to sbournd 101. there's a crash in the area. if you're heading through the peninsula, 280 might be your best bet. we also had an injury accident on westbound 4, antioch to concord is 35 minutes. southbound 101 from san rafael
