thursday, september 5th. >> i'm consumekumasi. >> i'm reggie aqui. >> meteorologist mike nicco is standing by. there's a lone thunderstorm to the east of stockton. that will move north away from us. we've got the marine layer in. we've got mist coming out of that. it's kind of a humid morning out there as we deal with the increase in the marine layer. the fact that it's going to bring us slightly cooler weather as we head into the afternoon hours. in fact, 60s, 70s and 80s will be a more dominant feature of our forecast than the 90s we've been seeing inland for the last couple days. enjoy the break. we'll have a couple more days of cooler weather. i'll show you warmer weather coming up in the accuweather 7-day forecast. we have a traffic alert for westbound 80 at the san pablo dam road. all lanes blocked because of the overturned big rig carrying chickens.

traffic is being detoured at san pablo dam road, paerntly right at the off-ramp. you can get right back on. it's causing massive delays, at least half an hour if you're heading through that area. you may want to consider a few alternates, richmond parkway to 580 or get around the whole thing and take 680 to highway 24. we got word of a crash westbound across the san mateo bridge. we'll keep you posted on the delays and the sig alert. abc 7 reporter amy hollyfield live at the scene. amy. >> reporter: frances, they are right now rescuing live chickens out of this big rig. that's what the driver was hauling. you're watching chp officers carrying chickens. it's quite a site. i'll tweet it out in a second. check my twitter page. right now i want to show you this accident scene. this is what's left of the big rig that caught fire here. it's almost hard to know what you're looking at.

you can see the tires on the road. it's really just a frame that's left of the axel and the truck. it burned all the way down to the frame. you can see on this overpass. this is what the trick hit and then flipped over and then caught fire. they don't know why yet. they don't know what happened. they got the call about 3:45 this morning. and since then all westbound lanes in san pablo on interstate 80 have been closed. this is right at san pablo dam road, the exit, just past it. it took us about 30 minutes to get through it from one on-ramp to the exit. of course, that backup is just building as we speak. you'll want to avoid the area if you can. the driver of the big rig was taken to the hospital with some cuts but is expected to be okay. they do not have an estimated time of opening up this -- all these lanes. it's a huge mess that they have to clean up. not only the wreckage. but they also keep talking about all the oil on the ground. they keep telling us to be careful so we don't slip or get it on us. right now they're just saying

it's going to be a while. live in san pablo, amy hollyfield, abc 7 news. >> thanks, amy. developing news in southern california, the search is continuing for the final victim of that boat fire that killed 34 people. >> the ntsb says teams are documenting the wreckage that's currently submerged and inverted. >> that documentation is occurring with side-scan sonar so they're mapping the wreckage before it is moved. >> the ntsb says it could take up to two years to determine what caused the fire. investigators say the conception, the name of the boat, did not have sprinklers on board, but that's also not required. this morning we're learning more about the victims including several from the bay area. >> carrie mclaughlin and christian takvam were on board the conception. you can see right here.

neighbors say mclaughlin's parents have gone to santa barbara to help with the identification problem. they were co-woerks at brilliant, a san francisco-based company focused on s.t.e.m. mclaughlin was a senior software engineer. takvam was an -- they brought immense passion, talent, leadership and warmth. they will be dearly missed. >> even though i didn't know for sure they were dead, i was already sorry for what happened to them. >> neighbors are clearly still processing the news. mclaughlin glue up in palo alto and was most recently a resident of oakland. live in the studio, jobina fortson, abc 7 news. developing news on hurricane dorian, it's strengthened to a category 3 heading towards south carolina.

meanwhile, officials in the bahamas say there have been 20 hurricane-related deaths. that number is expected to rise. megan tevrizian is in charleston, south carolina. >> reporter: the biggest concern here is storm surge. officials now asking everyone to shelter-in-place. >> dorian restrengthened to a category 3 hurricane overnight and might make landfall as it inches closer. >> boarded up and packed. i'm on my way. >> reporter: a hurricane warning is in effect for the entire south carolina and north carolina coastline which is set to face the brunt of the storm and a dangerous storm surge of up to eight feet. south carolina's governor asking anyone who lives in the evacuation zone to get out. >> it is the water that kills people. it is the water that is the real danger. >> reporter: fema setting up operations at ft. bragg and the coast guard moving operation inland. dorian passing through florida, but the sunshine state for the

most part was spared. in the bahamas, new video this morning of dorian's utter devastation. homes and buildings ripped apart, left in pieces. the death toll, now 20, but expected to rise with more than 200 people reported missing. 70000 people in dire need of clean water and food after surviving a nightmare. in south carolina they're already experiencing high tide. with the additional rain and potential storm surge, we could see several feet of flooding before dorian passes through. megan tevrizian, abc news, charleston, south carolina. hi, sloid. here is the latest statistics. gusts up to 140. right now it's starting to make a jog to the northeast. it is going to hug the coast. it could, some of the little areas that stick out around wilmington get hit by the

eyeball. charleston gusting 60 to 65 miles per hour which is faster than a severe thunderstorm. in fact, right now, right by the coast, possibility of 74-mile-per-hour winds. so our first hurricane speeds making landfall in the u.s. is possible right now. look at the rainfall. all the way up the east coast and into canada with the heaviest amounts from charleston, up to a foot there, to even the low lands of north carolina, up to a foot there. not only do we have the surge coming in, we've got nearly a foot of rain falling on top of that. frances? >> i'll take it from here, mike. president trump is standing strong on his claim that hurricane dorian threatened alabama. critics questioned whether he knew geography. >> alabama could be in for at least some very strong winds. >> yesterday the president wanted to prove he was correct. he held up the map showing the original projected impact.

when you look at it closely, it appears to have a hand-drawn line to include part of alabama. >> that map looked like it almost had a sharpie. >> i don't know. i don't know. i don't know. >> it's a federal crime to knowingly publish a false forecast. fema and the national oceanic and atmospheric administration declined to comment on that map. happening right now, yahoo! is working to fix an outage. yahoo! mail users are having issues with their email. the website down detector recorded more than 5,000 reports of issues. the customer care account tweeted engineers identified the issue but they don't know how long it will take to resolve it. happening today, fog heads will be tuning in for the final hours of -- k fog. the ledge tear mugendary music >> it will be from dave morey's ten at ten.

57 at 7:00. 60s at 9:00, 70s at 11:00. near 80 during the afternoon hours. a few low 80s around 3:00. as far as the east bay goes, in the 60s through 11:00. breaking out sunshine then. we'll hang out in the mid 70s in the afternoon hours. our last stop will be san francisco where sunshine will be at a premium early. we'll get a little more in the afternoon hours with mid to upper 60s. pretty gnarly accident out there. let's get to frances. >> a sig alert, traffic alert issued for an overturned big rig carrying live chickens on westbound 80. a full freeway closure in place. this is westbound 80 at san pablo dam road. traffic detoured off the freewa and right back on because it's right now the on and off-ramp. traffic is heavily backing up. you can see it's a crawl approaching the scene, causing 20 to 30-minute delays. they don't know when this is going to he open. this will be the hot spot all morning. for folks heading through the area, you may want to consider

it's 5:15. seven things to know this morning. number one, a major traffic problem on westbound 80. an overturned big rig carrying chickens. no word on when this will reopen. number two, weather shouldn't be an issue with that. even though we have mist hanging in the air and temperatures in the 50s and 60s. that's your biggest concern during the morning. number three, the ntsb says it could take up to two years to determine what caused the boat fire that killed 34 people. coast guard officials recovered 33 bodies. one person is still missing. number four, in riverside county firefighters are battling a nearly 1,000 acre brush fire. they have zero containment. mandatory evacuations are ordered for the la cresta

>> reporter: this morning the chilling calls coming from kevin hart's home released after he was taken to the hospital following that frightening car wreck from sunday. >> there's something on on his back is pulling out on his spine. >> reporter: the 40-year-old actor and comedian now requiring extensive physical therapy after suffering a major back injury when his vehicle careened off a road in calabasas, california, crushing the roof of the classic car. authorities now investigating where speeding was a potential factor in the crash. coming up at 7:00 a.m., we'll tell you what law enforcement officials are saying about the crash and what's next for hart's recovery. with your "gma first look," i'm adrian ban kefrt, abc news, los angeles. the trump administration rolling back energy standards for household light bulbs. the new standards were included in energy legislation implemented under president george w. bush, finalized under the obama administration. critics of the change say it will mean higher energy bills

and more pollution. the affected bulbs account for half of all conventional bulbs used in the u.s. senator kamala harris unveiled a plan at cnn's presidential town hall along with nine other presidential candidates. many candidates called for rejoining the paris climate accord and investing in renewable energy. her other initiatives include going carbon neutral and phasing out gas-powered cars. it is national -- boy is this specific -- cheese pizza day. >> get this. americans eat about 3 billion pizzas every year which accounts for about one-third of global pizza consumption. that's a lot. pizza chains including papa john's and girdano's are offering special deals today. >> it is my favorite food.

let's talk about what's going to happen in the south bay. 78 in milpitas, 85 in los gatos, 90s in morgan hill and gilroy. not as big on the peninsula. mid to upper 70s and breezy conditions. mid 60s, 63 to 65 along the coast, only a two-degree spread. 71 in south san francisco. sausalito 72. low to mid 80s as you head into breezy valleys in the north bay. breezy along the east bayshore. some of the breezes will touch parts of the east bay keeping most of us in the mid to upper 80s. tonight we're looking at temperatures and feeling cooler weather with mid 50s to low 60s. extensive cloud cover and mist in the air. a couple degrees keerl. it's saturday that's going to have a touch of fall with 60s and 70s, our fastest breezes. get ready for mid 60s to mid 70s to mid 80s coast, bay and inland next week. let's get back to frances. that looks terrible, frances.

as we were sleeping, dorian decided to get stronger. 115-mile-per-hour sustained winds, gusts to 140. back to a category 3. it's skirting the coast of south carolina right now just off the coast of chafrl stop where we've had gusts reach 60 to 70 miles per hour. look at the heavy rain on top of the storm surge of up to seven feet.

there on that road, on the freeway, westbound 80 and delays have grown to almost an hour now on westbound 80. so let me take you to the maps to show you where this is. this is a spot you'll want to avoid. traffic is jammed as you make your way from richmond to san pablo dam road. so avoid this mess, you may want to consider the richmond parkway to san pablo avenue which is already slow or avoid it altogether and take 680, which is slow southbound, to highway 24. 24 is looking good. here is a live shot of the bay bridge toll plaza. major delays on westbound 80. abc 7 reporter amy hollyfield is live at the scene with more information. >> reporter: i want to show you some of theic ch ens who did survive this horrible crash. these have all been rescued by chp officers at the scene and by animal control who is also here. some did run away, some did die. here are some of the survivors. now i want to give you a look of

what is left of this big rig truck. it's hard to even know what you're looking at because of the fire. a frame of it is left. we've got tires on the road. there's also spilled fuel. so some fumes in the air as well. it's going to take them a while to get all of this cleared up. you can see right here on this overpass, this is what the truck crashed into. and then it flipped over and then it caught fire. they got the call at 3:45 this morning. this is westbound 80 in san pablo just past the san pablo dam road exit. the driver did survive the accident. officers say it has been a challenge dealing with the wreckage and also all the chickens. >> in my time, 16 years, i have not seen that, but we're prepared for anything. we're doing our best to try to obviously take care of them -- we don't want the chickens on the other side of the freeway. some chickens, because of the

fire off the coast of southern california that killed 34 people. >> coast guard officials recovered 33 bodies. one person is still missing. officials are interviews the five crew members and other witnesses. the ntsb says divers are also using sonar equipment to document the area. that boat is sitting upside down in about 65 feet of water. investigators also say the conception, the name of that boat, did not have sprinklers, but it wasn't required to. coast guard officials still looking for one missing person. >> we have learned at least 15 of the victims are from northern california, including a couple from berkeley. abc 7 reporter jobina fortson is giving us the update. >> good morning. daniel garcia and partner were on board the diving boat, the conception, celebrating the labor day holiday weekend when it caught fire. friends confirmed to us that the couple didn't survive. garcia was a software engineer and primary developer behind lighting technology called fast

nearly 300 firefighters are battling what's being called the tenaja fire. the cause of the fire is under investigation. lightning strikes were seen in the area. so far there there have been no reports of injuries. in the east bay, firefighters are guarding against flare-ups in this condo fire in pleasant hill. the flames are shooting out of the windows as fire crews arrived at the complex along gregory lane last night. you can see how huge those flames were. firefighters battled to keep the fire from spreading to other condos in the complex. no word of any injuries. right now investigators are work dog find out what started the fire. this morning hurricane dorian is approaching south carolina and once again gaining strength. now it's a category 3 storm. developing news on hurricane dorian, the winds have picked up again, and it's back to a category 3. we want to show you this live look from north myrtle beach courtesy of surfline. officials are concerned about a

potential storm surge. south carolina's governor warning people to evacuate. the coast guard is preparing to potentially have to rescue people. we're seeing new video of destruction in the bahamas. there at least 20 people have died and more than 200 people are still missing. disney, the parent company of abc 7 is donating a million dollars toward relief and recovery efforts in the bahamas in the wake of hurricane dorian. you can also help. donations can be made by calling 1-800-red-cross. you can also text the word dorian to 90999. that will donate $10 or donate online by going to redcross.org/abc. 14 women are suing lyft over sexual assault allegations involving lyft drivers. they filed a lawsuit in san francisco's superior court. itot have happened if lyft required cameras in their vehicles. the women want lyft drivers to go through fingerprint and background checks. lyft responded with a statementa

in part saying what the victims describe is terrifying, our commitment is stronger than ever to ensure our riders and drivers have the safest experience possible. happening now, the search is on for a man involved in a shooting in merced county. chp issued a blue alert for guadalupe herrera lopez. authorities say they got into a shooting with the 51-year-old man. they believe he may be armed and dangerous. he drives a 2013 gmc sierra, white, like the one shown in this photo. it has california license plate number 25599h1. you're urged to call 911 if you see herrera lopez or his vehicle. a facebook leak could affect hundreds of thousands of people. a controversial school vaccination bill is headed to the governor's desk. he's demanding changes even before it arrives. right now we'll take a look at what's happening outside at 5:39. here is meteorologist mike

nicco. >> pretty misty here. nothing like what they're dealings with. a quick update on dorian, category 3, major hurricane again. look at the 24-hour rain total. nearly 14 inches. thankfully that's mainly offshore. places like charleston and folly beach getting 5 1/2 to 7 inches of rain. still another 12 to 18 hours to go. upper 50s to low 60s with the clouds and the mist along the east bayshore. we've got mid to upper 50s in the north bay, san francisco, san carlos, pacifica. from fremont, mountain view southward, and in the eastbound, low to mid 60s. 60 in walnut creek as we look southbound on 24. misty spots if you're driving this morning. cool to warm mass transit. breezy everywhere on the bay today. east bay valleys in the 60s through 9:00. faster sunshine will push you i understand the low to mid 80s for most of the afternoon hours. as we get deeper into the

as you look at this mess, you realize they're nowhere near opening up any lanes of westbound 80 at san pablo dam road. it is right on san pablo dam road, so traffic is being detoured off the off-ramp and right back on. unfortunately, as i take you to the maps, what you'll find is the backup is a mess. it's a crawl on westbound 78 80 through richmond, at least a few miles of a backup. traffic delays are about an hour right now. avoid this mess altogether. consider the richmond parkway, san pablo avenue. that's a bit slow as well. you may want to consider 680 to highway 24. here is a live shot of interstate 80 through emeryville as you make your way past that accident. again, we have that major traffic alert westbound 80 san
