right now at 6:00, chickens on the freeway. you heard me right. a big rig crashes and bursts into flames in the east bay. the westbound lanes of interstate 80 are still closed. we have live team coverage of what has become a traffic nightmare. also this morning, we're live in south carolina as hurricane dorian takes aim at the east coast. this new video and dangerous conditions people are facing. good morning, it is thursday, september 5th. of course, as you have heard, we have a lot going on this morning. >> we'll start with meteorologist mike nicco. mike. >> i'll start with our local weather. then we'll talk about dorian in a second. first, we've been watching some showers and thunderstorms in the central valley and into the sierra. that's moving the the north away from us. we have a lot of cloud cover and mist hanging in the air for your morning commute. temperatures running from 57 to 63. low to mid 60s this afternoon with limited sunshine at the coast. 71 to 72 with clouds lingering around the bay. not so much inland by noon.

74 to 86 by 4:00. then 69 to 7 at 7:00. it strengthened overnight, category 3 major hurricane. 115-mile-per-hour winds. look at the rain totals possible. eight to 12 inches of rain along the south carolina coast to the north carolina coast. a storm surge up to seven feet on top of that rain. flooding will be a major issue the next 24 to 48 hours. a traffic alert westbound 80 at san pablo dam road. we have a full freeway closure because of an overturned big rig carrying live chickens. traffic is absolutely jammed on westbound 80. you can see it's a crawl for miles. it is causing at least 45-minute delay through that westbound 80 stretch. you may want to consider the richmond parkway to san pablo avenue. that's also going to slow you down. you may also want to consider 680 to highway 4 if you're coming out of solano county. you can see that is slow as

well. there's a crash 680 as well, northbound at mckee. here is a live shot of an alternate route. southbound 680 through walnut creek. it is slow here but still better than that coo-coo situation on westbound 80. amy hollyfield is live at the scene. >> reporter: hi, frances. officers are still trying to catch chickens that are walking around on the freeway. here is a sample of some of the survivors that they have been able to rescue and contain. they are very chill after their horrific experience. the big rig that was carrying them flipped over and caught fire. that big rig is still here on interstate 80. it's on its side. it's burned, just a shell of itself. some of its wheels are 100 yards away from it under this overpass. a huge mess for the chp to clean up out here. we are on westbound interstate 80 in san pablo right at the san pablo dam road exit. all lanes are blocked.

this call came in about 3:45 this morning for officers. they've been out here ever since. they've been dealing with the huge mess and also the chickens which has been quite a challenge for them. >> we have live chickens in the roadway. some still in the lanes. we have animal control to assist us. we're assisting them. >> some did get away? >> some did escape the area, yes. >> here is video of the chp officers carrying live chickens. not a scene you see every day. in this job they have to be ready for everything. as far as the crash, they're not sure why it happened. the big rig ran into the overpass. they don't know why. he was taken to the hospital. he's going to be okay. just a few cuts they wanted to get checked out. they say they're going to be here a while cleaning up this mess. they have oil on the freeway they've got to clean up. they've got wreckage, chickens they want to catch. they also want to check the

integrity of this overpass since the big rig hit it. a lot of work left to be done here if you can of void the area. live in san pablo, amy hollyfield, abc 7 news. developing news in southern california. the search continues for the final victim of the boat fire that killed 34 people. ntsb says teams are documenting the wreckage that's currently submerged and inverted 65 feet down in the ocean. >> that documentation is occurring with side scan sew far so they're actually mapping the wreckage before it is moved. >> the ntsb says it could take up to two years to determine what caused the fire. investigators also say the conception, that boat, it didn't have any sprinklers on board. but that's not required. also this morning we're learning more about the victims including several from the bay area. abc 7 reporter jobina fortson has the details. good morning. good morning. carrie mclaughlin and

christiane takvan were on board the boat. his parents have gone down to santa barbara to help with the identification process. mclaughlin and takvan were co-workers at a company folk cussesed on s.t.e.m. in a statement, the ceo said, quote, carrie and kristian were incredible friends and colleague who brought immense passion, talent, leadership and warmth and they will be missed dearly. >> even though i didn't know for sure they were dead, i was already sorry for what happened to them. >> that was one of mclaughlin's neighbors talking to us on camera. everyone around them is trying to process the information. mclaughlin grew up in palo alto and was most recently a resident of oakland. live in the studio, jobina fortson, abc 7 news. we'll keep you updated as new information is released about the fire and the victims.

south carolina and north carolina coastline which is set to face the brunt of the storm and a dangerous storm surge up to eight feet. south carolina's governor asking anyone who lives in the evacuation zone to get out. >> it is the water that kills people. it is the water that is the real danger. fema setting up operations at ft. bragg, collecting more than 250 trailers filled with food and water. the coast guard moving operations inland, ready for potential rescues once the storm passes. >> the preparedness part is pretty much over. we're in the wait and see what kind of complexity we're going to be dealing with. >> reporter: dorian passing through florida, toppling trees at its peak, knocking out power to some. but the sunshine state forethe most part was spared. in the bahamas new video this morning of dorian's utter devastation. homes and buildings ripped apart, left in pieces. the death toll, now 20, but

accusations against placido domingo of sexual harassment. 11 women have shared stories about encounters with domingo. last month the a.p. uncovered multiple allegations of sexual harassment against the opera superstar. the san francisco opera canceled the october concert. in a statement the spokesperson called the accusations riddled with inconsistencies but provided no specifics. the trump administration is rolling back energy standards for household light bulbs. the new standards were included in energy legislation implemented under president george w. bush. they were finalized under the obama administration. critics say it will mean higher energy bills and more pollution. the affected bulbs account for

hurricane-force so far which would be 74 miles per hour. dorian increased overnight, 115-mile-per-hour category 3 major hurricane. tracking north to northeast at eight miles per hour. look at the rain and the potential for tornadoes. look at the rainfall. nearly 14 inches the last 24 hours over the ocean. you get closer in. up five, six, even seven inches on top of the flood. a surge of storm-pushed water that could reach nearly seven feet. not much of charleston, it's not going to flood today. for us it will be a little cooler with breezy conditions and slow sunshine. 60s, 70s and 80s, coast, bay and inland. back to the traffic with frances. a traffic alert for a full freeway closure westbound 80 at san pablo dam road. traffic is being detoured right at san pablo dam road and then right back on again. here is what it looks like now. the backup actually not horrible. it's been about the same the past couple hours.

this is in san pablo on westbound 80. all lanes at the san pablo dam road exit have been closed for about three hours now and will be for a while. they have a huge mess to deal with here. >> the vehicle is still very hot. we still have to get a tow truck. we have live chickens in the roadway, also with the deceased ones. we have to deal with that. there's some oil. just the way the vehicle struck -- we would like to open as soon as possible, we have to obviously make it safe for folks to traverse. >> reporter: officers have been busy catching and rescuing chickens all morning. some did escape. they got on out of here. if you see any wandering the streets today around san pablo, you know what happened. as for the crash, they aren't sure why the truck hit the overpass. the driver is okay, was taken to the hospital with some cuts, expected to be fine. now they need to check out the bridge he hit to make sure it is safe.

county this morning. mandatory evacuations ordered for residents of the la cresta community because of a fast moving brush fire there. yesterday afternoon flames quickly spread to nearly 1,000 acres over rugged hilly terrain. there's no containment of the tenaja fire. the cause is under investigation. lightning strikes were seen in the area. so far there have been no reports of any injuries. in the east bay firefighters are guarding against flare-ups from this condo fire in pleasant hill. flames were shooting out of the window as fire crews got there. it's at the complex along gregory lane. it happened last night. you can see how huge those flames were. the firefighters were battling to keep the fire from spreading to other condos. investigators are working to find out what started the fire. scarlett johansson defending director woody allen after being accused of sexual abuse. what she said in a new interview. you're looking live at the

big board at the new york stock exchange, starting up this morning. another update on how the markets are doing coming up next. first you're never more than seven minutes away from my accuweather forecast. here is meteorologist mike nicco. >> this is a tower cam from frying pan bay. it's just about 40 miles south of southampton south of wilmington. it's out over the ocean. you can see how devastating the winds are and the waves are where there's absolutely no friction to slow it down. that is incredible there. charleston, 56, myrtle beach 31. not too breezy there yet. look at the rainfall totals possible. eight inches to 12 inches. not only do we have the half foot storm surge. we have a half foot to a foot of rain on top of that. there will be devastating damage. we're just getting into the worst of the storm here in the u.s. back at home, mist mid 50s to low 60s about everywhere. let's jump into what's going on as far as the east bay valleys.

we'll jump up to the low to mid 80s this afternoon. once we get rid of the cloud cover by about 9:00. as far as the peninsula goes, cloud cover through 9:00. 69 and sunny at 11:00. mid 70s with mostly sunny conditions this afternoon. south bay in the 60s through 9:00. we'll flirt with 80 host of that time under a mostly sunny sky. a crazy commute if you're just joining us. frances here to tell us about an overturned truck with special cargo in it. >> we have some chickens. some didn't make it. quite a few were rescued by emergency crews. live camera show the at the scene. westbound 80 at san pablo dam road has been closed since 3:45 this morning. it's going to take extra time to clear this up because they need to clear the roadway and the chickens and the big rig as well. the backup has not actually gotten worse, but it is still pretty bad.

wanted to prove he was right. he held up a map showing dorian's projected impact. as you can see, it appears someone hand-drew a line to include alabama. >> that map that you showed today looked like it almost had a sharpie. >> i don't know. i don't know. i don't know. >> it's a federal crime to knowingly publish a false forecast. fema and the national oergs antic and atmospheric association have declined do comment on the map. happening now, the search is on for a man involved in a shooting in merced county. chp has issued a blue alert for guadalupe herrera lopez. authorities say they got into a shooting match with the 51-year-old man and they believe he's armed and dangerous. herrera lopez drives a 2013 gmc white sierra, like the one you see in this picture with california license plates 25599h1. you are urged to call 911 if you see herrera lopez or this vehicle. scarlett johansson is back
