ripped through a warehouse and killed three people, the jury was unable to come to a verdict. both men were charged with 36 counts of involuntarily man slaunser. one for each person who died. >> the decision stunned those who lost family and friends. the youngest was 17 years old. fathers, daughters, sons, couples who died in each other's arms. >> we'll begin with abc7 news from the alameda county courthouse. >> reporter: an emotional kay for family and friends. for defense attorneys it was a very different sentiment. >> it was just ridiculous they charged max in the first place. it was almost comical. it was transparent. it was a scapegoat. >> reporter: this is the moment

around 6:00 tonight. at the jail thursday there was no long walk from the door to the a waiting car for max harris. the man who faced 39 years in prison left privately and as a free man. >> healing, that's all i can predict. some real food. the comfort and support of his friends. >> reporter: friend and long-time supporter danielle silva said she always knew harris was innocent. he acted as the creative director of the ghost ship. he was charged with felony involuntarily manslaughter following the deadly fire. on thursday after a month-long trial he was acquitted on all 36 counts, one for each person killed. >> max is incredibly sxoorry an sad for them. he expresses his ee mothers and wishes he could have done something to save someone that died. >> i can't imagine the healing he has to go through. he lost seven friends in one night.

>> reporter: as part of harris' release, the alameda county sheriff's deputies drove him away from the jail. according to a speshgz harris left happy but drained. one of almena's friends spoke about how that fire was handled. that was not a witness and that juror shared what they learned and they were removed. a civil lawsuit by the families of the ghost ship warehouse fire is still pending. after the announcement, the attorneys criticized the city for not addressing the

souls. abs 7 news. a grass fire broke out in northern california and quickly grew to 6,000 acres. cal fire is battling the fire in rugged terrain. there is zero containment. it's burning outside the mendocino national forest and west of red bluff. cal fire has ordered mandatory evacuations for communities living on the edge of the forest. developing right now, leaders in the bahamas expect the death toll to climb when they locate more victims of hurricane dorian. that storm is blamed for 30 deaths across the bahamas. dorian is moving into the carolinas and people are feeling the storm's impact. touchdowns have touched down in north carolina. they have warned about potentially deadly storm surges and flash floods as well. we have more on dorian. >> this storm has been crawling. take a look at the satellite picture. clouds from dorian extending up
