this morning on "world news now," happening now, hurricane dorian whipping this morning on "world news now," happening now, hurricane dorian whipping the carolinas with wind and rain. >> the storm has also spawned tornados, leaving people without a place to call home, and power is out to thousands. dorian is picking up speed. tropical storm warnings are now up for massachusetts. we have live team coverage. death toll rises. dorian has claimed at least 30 lives in the bahamas. but experts warn the final toll could be staggering. and as we see more heartbreaking images from the islands, americans are stepping up their efforts to help those in need. also this morning the growing list of retailers telling customers not to carry their guns in the store. five major chains and counting after the walmart mass shooting. plus the results are in of the most extensive study ever.

scientists have a new theory about what the loch ness monster really is. that's ahead on this friday, september 6th. >> good morning, everyone. thank you for joining us. it's been a long week of covering dorian. let's get right to hurricane dorian and that march along the east coast. >> dorian has been picking up speed. it's still packing winds about 90 miles an hour. >> the storm has spun off several waterspouts and tornados. you can even see the rotation of this one near swansboro, north carolina. >> one twister left behind damaged homes, twisted fences. at one point over 250,000 homes and businesses were without power because of this storm. >> flooding is expected to get worse along the north carolina coast. as much as 15 inches of rain are expected in that area before dorian moves in. let's begin with abc's morgan norwood who joins us live from wilmington, north carolina now.

we've seen the eye wall extremely close to the carolinas so what are you experiencing right now? >> reporter: good morning, kenneth. dorian continuing to batter the carolina coast with this heavy wind and heavy rain. that's why north carolina governor roy cooper has urged people to hunker down and stay in a safe place until this thing passes and gets out of here. >> morgan, we know the carolinas have been getting hit all day long. there is extensive damage. even though the storm is not all the way there, what is the latest about all those people and businesses who lost power and what about any reports of injuries? >> reporter: yeah, good question, janai. i'm learning that more than 260 customers are without power in both the carolinas. the good news, in south carolina that number is going down. unfortunately here in north carolina, that number is rising as hurricane dorian continues to trek north. as far as any injuries, i haven't heard of any major reports of injuries.

i think officials want to keep it that way. >> all right, morgan, thank you so much. we really appreciate it. team coverage continues with accuweather's chris nallan. >> what do we know about the storm weakening at all? it is down to a category 1 at this point? >> yeah, we are talking about winds as you alluded to. now at 90 miles per hour. the storm itself has weakened and clearly you can see on that radar the eye itself is welcoming a little bit more disabled, not as cylindrical, if you will. it's not as circular. but we are still talking about a strong storm here as it wraps around the rains, the heavy rains, and of course the wind and the storm surge piling into land here. so that's going to be a concern. some of those highest wind gusts, take a look at this just southeast of charleston, south carolina. we had winds upwards of almost 100 miles per hour earlier. but now the concern is going to be the waves and the wind action bringing in heavy rain as well inland. low spots we will still experience some flooding here, guys. >> you mentioned some flooding.

also storm surge. we've been talking about storm surge all week. do we know how badly the carolinas are getting battered right now? also, chris, what's happening when it comes to dorian and the northeast? >> yeah, good questions. and you know something, it is about storm surge. we've been seeing those low-lying areas get pounded. so if you're about at sea level there could be the storm surge upwards of 2, 4 feet. also depends on the actual tide. so if you are at a high tide, that's when that water's going to come up pretty quickly and close to those low-lying spots during the overnight period. of course those winds starting to trek a little bit further to the north and to the east as we head into the day. then especially up throughout the northeast, we watched this storm system coming up into the delmarva. you can see those waves will continue to pound the east coast here. especially the delmarva into the northeast here, then there we go, we have rains and heavy winds here off the coast of massachusetts early on saturday morning. so even though it's not a direct hit for the big cities, we are

still talking about high winds, dangerous rip currents along the water, and of course big surf there. >> chris, we know even some beaches here around the new york area are going to be closed today and tomorrow because of impacts from hurricane dorian. you said some warnings all the way up to massachusetts. we've been talking about this storm for about a week now. when will we finally be done with dorian? >> i mean, honestly, that's a great question. the thing is, it has been a very, very long week. and the good news is, eventually this storm starts to pick up some momentum and then goes out to sea. but we are still talking about some threats across, say, nova scotia. that's going to be a concern into the weekend. then eventually early into next week, it's finally out of here. >> all right, still feels like the storm that just won't quit. chris nallan, accuweather's been working overtime, we appreciate you and accuweather there. we'll check back with you in the next half hour. now to the bahamas where search and rescue missions are moving forward. >> the u.s. coast guard says it has rescued more than 200 people

since dorian began. the death toll in the bahamas is up to at least 30. >> a top official says that number could rise to a staggering level. thousands of people have no homes right now, and many are unaccounted for. abc's victor oquendo is in the bahamas. >> reporter: the desperate search for the missing. the whereabouts of hundreds unknown. officials fear the death toll could be staggering. coast guard helicopters fanning out across the northern bahamas, some landing on remote islands for the first time. most of their homes completely gone. this area in abaco you can't even see the ground. we flew with trinity air ambulance to grand bahama with supplies collected by our miami station. we're about to land in one of the hardest-hit areas in the bahamas. our pilot tells us there is no working power so the u.s. navy is coordinating all flights in and out from a nearby ship. leaving the airport, a maze of debris. planes in wrong places. nearby we met gino daniels. his first floor submerged by storm surge.

>> water just poured in. at that point everything was a wash after that. >> reporter: but he tells us he plans on rebuilding. >> still hard to see all what you've been accumulating and building up over the years just completely washed away. >> reporter: this is what's left of a terminal at grand bahama international airport. it is a vital lifeline to the island and they've just now resumed some makeshift operations but the recovery here will take a long time. victor oquendo, abc news, freeport, grand bahama. >> our thanks to victor, and our hearts go out to the people in the bahamas. we will continue to follow hurricane dorian and the devastation in the bahamas. we are going to turn to other news. new details in the investigation into that deadly dive boat fire. >> ntsb investigators toured a similar boat to check out the bunk room and its only emergency hatch. some of them even tried crawling through and said it would have been very difficult for 34 people to escape, especially in the dark. >> as dive teams work to recover pieces of the wreckage, crew members tell investigators they made several frantic attempts to save those passengers sleeping below deck. when they tried getting through

doors and windows they were overcome by searing heat, smoke, and flames. our affiliate in santa barbara spoke with the boat's owner who said the crew had no choice but to evacuate. >> the crew is having a very difficult time. they're breaking down, they're seeking counseling. it's a very, very tough time for them. >> investigators say they are not ruling out any possible causes of the fire, including the boat's electrical system and charging cellphones. the list of retailers asking customers not to openly carry guns into their stores is growing. cvs, walgreens have joined walmart and kroger. wegmans calls it a preference rather than a ban. let's talk about something a little bit lighter. the loch ness monster. >> all right. >> so apparently we've got the latest on the loch ness and what lives in the famed scottish lake. >> scientists in new zealand have released results of their study on what's believed to be the home of the elusive monster. they determined more than 3,000

a florida man's escape after allegedly threatening someone at a restaurant took him into a river in north ft. myers tuesday. police aviation unit used infrared technology to spot the man, quote, practicing his breast and butterfly strokes. rescue crews retrieved him from the water but not before right there officers said he delivered them a single-finger salute. in connecticut a second round of arrests have made in the case of that missing mother of five. >> her estranged husband has been arrested for the second time along with his girlfriend. here is whit johnson. >> reporter: a second round of arrests connected to the case of advertising mother of five, jennifer dulos. >> anything about the new charge? >> reporter: michelle troconis turning herself in, charged with tampering or fabricating evidence. this after her boyfriend, fotis dulos, jennifer's estranged

husband, was taken into custody. >> it's an exhausting fight. i love my children. that's about it. >> reporter: according to an arrest warrant, complete with a time stamped string of surveillance images, police say troconis lied to them about potential alibis, events which troconis was forced to admit never happened. jennifer, last seen may 24th, dropping her kids off at school. that morning police believed dulos was lying in wait at her home. a security camera capturing jennifer's chevy suburban leaving. detectives alleging dulos was behind the wheel, possibly carrying her body. investigators accusing dulos of later driving a co-worker's red toyota tacoma. they said lab results matched a bloodlike substance found on the seats to jennifer's dna. >> there's not much we hadn't heard before, and i question the wisdom of these charges at this late date. >> reporter: the pair pleaded not guilty to previous charges.

this morning on "world news now," hurricane dorian battering the carolinas right now. it's dumping heavy rain, leaving many places flooded, and the powerful winds are crippling power lines. also happening right now, hundreds of firefighters are battling this out-of-control brush fire burning dangerously close to homes. we take you to the front lines. new this half hour, an airline mechanic charged with trying to sabotage a flight. >> the mechanic allegedly tampered with an american airlines plane before taking off. how the airline is expanding. and we all knew it had to be much more than a hunch. what those three lovely girls and those three boys just did to an iconic piece of hollywood history. we're talking about the brady bunch. we'll have that story in "the skinny" on this friday, september 6th.

good friday morning. thank you for joining us. all week long we have been talking about hurricane dorian and that is again how we start the morning as the hurricane moves along the coast of north carolina. >> the storm is tracking to the northeast with winds still about around 90 miles an hour. some coastal communities in the carolinas could get more than a foot of rain before it's over. >> tornados like this one in north myrtle beach, south carolina, left behind a trail of destruction and widespread power outages. >> and this is a look at topsail beach, north carolina, where the rain is falling and we can see some lightning in the background. just those trees whipping in the wind. let's check the forecast with accuweather's chris nallan. the storm just won't let up. >> yeah, kenneth, janai, we're talking about a storm that's still potent, even though now a cat 1 as of 2:00 a.m.

we are looking at a storm that has a lot of rain, and you can clearly see the eye itself is a little bit less organized, if you will, it's not as circular or perfect as it has been in the past. but we're still seeing a lot of rain here come onshore across parts of the north carolina, especially outside of cape lookout. the storm is 50 miles or so southwest of cape lookout as it is grazing the coast. the question is where does it make landfall as it will probably be along the outer banks. we're seeing a lot of rain coming inland locations. low-lying spots, flood risk is going to be high. we're going to see those travel disruptions as we head through your friday afternoon, and then up the east coast, that's the concern too as we roll forward. here's what you can expect with some of the highest wind gusts in virginia beach up to 60 miles per hour with rain amounts up to 10 inches. storm surge 1 to 3 feet. that's just one of the cities that will be impacted. >> right, and chris, you're talking about virginia beach there. but this storm is going to move even farther up along the northeast. there are warnings all the way

up to massachusetts. >> yeah, that's correct. and we are talking about storm surge risks. we're also seeing that storm surge risk going all the way up towards the jersey coast here, all across long island. low-lying areas. high tide times. that's when we see some of that coastal flooding. that goes all the way up towards around, say, massachusetts. the cape here as well. with tropical storm-force winds potentially into saturday morning. >> so we're not done talking about dorian just yet. all right, chris nallan, thank you so much for joining us. now to some of what dorian has left behind. a tornado spawned by the storm caused this widespread destruction in emerald island, north carolina. downed trees and power lines left more than 250,000 people in the dark across the storm zone. >> look at this, one driver got a little too close to dorian's angry waves in myrtle beach, south carolina. and of course had to abandon this jeep.

>> flooding is a big concern, particularly in low-lying areas along the coast. this high water was in charleston, south carolina. we know that there was flooding around that time, this time yesterday morning. abc's steve osunsami is there. >> reporter: hurricane dorian is bringing tragedy to the carolina coast, destroying their homes with tornados, and frightening them with waterspouts. >> which way is it going? >> reporter: near myrtle beach, families who rode out the storm had to run from the twisters just after sunrise. someone drove this jeep up onto the beach and the storm is taking it away too. high winds tore the siding off these apartment buildings. the people inside worried for their lives. >> all of a sudden the windows broke loose. everything was swirling in our bedroom. >> reporter: this is what the storm left of this mobile home park in emerald isle, north carolina. ar was hit hard.e was hurt. we're seeing this all over town, trees that couldn't withstand these high winds came crashing

down, sometimes over power lines. a giant tree came crashing this morning onto the bed of this 7-year-old boy. >> we were all sleeping downstairs, as precaution, for this reason. we do it during every storm. >> reporter: patrick murray and his daughter millie say it was a rough night. >> it was a little scary in the middle of the night, it started to pick up, the shutters were banging. >> reporter: just down the street is the reason we lost power. this dangerous power line dangling in floodwaters, lighting up the street. authorities here report that more than 200 trees fell across charleston. i want you to take a close look at this behind me. this is a massive oak tree, many times my size, that fell in the middle of the night. it was brought down by the high winds. wind gusts reach between 60 and 70 miles an hour. and luckily no one here was hurt. steve osunsami, abc news, charleston. >> our thanks to steve there. you know charleston is really one of my favorite cities in

south carolina. a lot of family and friends down there. thinking about them this morning. so many trees falling. all that flooding they're dealing with down there. our hearts are with them and we are praying for them this morning as well. a massive relief effort for the bahamas is getting under way as one official there is talking in the starkest terms about the situation. >> an american aid shipment arrived last night from miami. it included enough plastic sheeting for 35,000 people and water for 3,000. a search and rescue team from virginia is there and more american crews are arriving today. >> a horrific part of the story this woman in florida learned at least six members of her family died in the storm. julie edwards says others are still missing. the death toll is at least 30 people and the top health official in the bahamas says the final count could be staggering. >> so awful. a miami entrepreneur is using his organization's plane to ferry americans back to the u.s. and bring relief supplies to the bahamas.

government to step up relief efforts. we'll have more from the bahamas in our next half hour. so hard to hear about that death toll continuing to go up, especially for that woman who lost so many people of her family. >> heartbreak there. we do move on to more breaking news. a wildfire burning out of control in southern california is spreading quickly and has grown to about three square miles. >> crews are battling intense heat and gusting winds which have pushed the flames close to residential areas southeast of los angeles, threatening homes. mandatory evacuations are under way. abc's kayna whitworth has the details. >> reporter: a fast-moving wildfire burning dangerously close to homes in riverside county near the city of marietta about 80 miles east of los angeles. more than 500 firefighters battling the blaze, an all-out assault by air and on the ground. flames scorching 2,000 acres, ripping through these hills. homeowners frantically working to save their homes. >> just depends how the wind's going to -- if it changes direction, then a lot can change quickly. so that's always a concern.

>> reporter: 1,200 residents have been evacuated. this driver documenting her harrowing escape. >> scary. we've packed up. waiting to see if we're going to get evacuated or not. >> reporter: officials closing schools and urging residents in the area to avoid breathing the air. it's thick with smoke and ash. this is the first time this year we've seen such high winds accompanied by high heat. firefighters telling us this is the most extreme weather they've seen all season. kayna whitworth, abc news, los angeles. >> our thanks to kayna there. new this morning from miami, an american airlines mechanic is under arrest charged with trying to sabotage an aircraft's navigation system just before it was set to take off with 150 people on board. >> according to the criminal complaint the mechanic said he was upset about stalled contract negotiations. fortunately the tampering on a mid-july flight set off an error message alerting pilots so they aborted the takeoff and nobody was injured. that is terrifying. >> it is. the long nightmare is finally over for pro football

millions of people up and down the east coast saw sunsets like this last night thanks to dorian. this is from florida. the phenomenon is known as scattering which forecasters say is common after hurricanes. those outer cloud bands also extended to the northeast. bruce newman from our philadelphia station wpbi took this beautiful picture of the delaware river and the ben franklin bridge between camden, new jersey, and philly. turning overseas, an ohio woman has been arrested in the philippines and charged with human trafficking. >> she's accused of trying to smuggle a 6-day-old infant to the u.s. after reportedly trying to buy the baby online. here's abc's paula faris. >> reporter: police say this is video of an american woman trying to smuggle an infant out of the philippines. watch again as she pulls the baby just 6 days old out of that

sling and walks through the metal detector at manila's international airport. jennifer talbot, who has been living in utah, was arrested and charged with human trafficking. here she is handcuffed, being paraded by prosecutors in front of local media. at times wiping away tears. according to local reports, she met the baby's biological mother on the internet. it's unclear if any money was exchanged. at the airport, police say she successfully cleared the immigration counter with the newborn concealed. but as she was boarding a delta airlines flight back to the united states, she was asked by airline personnel about her oversized sling and wasn't able to produce travel documents for the baby. >> there was really an intention to conceal and to sneak out the baby. >> reporter: talbot does have other children. she has reached out to the u.s. embassy for help because if convicted she faces a possible life sentence which would be served there in the philippines. as for the baby's biological parents, both face human trafficking charges.
