parts of north carolina and virginia. we've seen close to a foot of rain in south carolina and north carolina. big difference between florence, matthew and dorian. this is racing out into the ocean to tropical storm warnings are up for the delmarva peninsula and of course nantucket because tomorrow morning could feel impacts and gusts on the order of 30 to nearly 60 miles per hour and the biggest impacts for most of the northeast going into this early weekend would be the beach closures because waves could reach ten feet. we're talking about rip currents that could be life-threatening. new york city has closed beaches today and tomorrow which is a good idea because this is where you can lose lives if you go into the water. michael. >> thank you so much, ginger. the storm is slamming the carolinas as we said, but it's already turning deadly in the u.s. at least four people are killed in the carolinas. rob marciano is there in nags head in the outer banks. good morning, rob. >> reporter: hey, good morning,

michael. we are in it now. it is eye of hurricane dorian making landfall 30 miles to the south accelerating to the northeast. in about an hour it's going to be worse and as conditions have gone downhill in the last hour, winds ripping off this water. waves -- this is low tide and this water is going to come up in the next six hours. if i walk further out towards that beach, winds would really be cranking. over 300,000 people are without power and damage across the carolinas and we are still far from over when it comes to hurricane dorian. overnight, hurricane dorian's wrath turning deadly in the u.s. after officials confirm four people died in the carolinas. listen as a transformer explodes knocking out power to this gas station. the roadways desolate as roaring winds and rain whipped the area. that danger exactly why people are being ordered to shelter in place. another fierce rain band is coming in.

i just got an alert on my phone to shelter in place. earlier thursday floodwaters swallowing wilmington. this man trying to get his vehicle out of the water, while this truck was left to defend itself on the beach. mammoth trees uprooted, power lines smoking, wires illuminating the streets leaving nearly 350,000 people without power, and the carolina coast swarmed with tornadoes and waterspouts. the destruction just devastating. a miracle no one was injured in this mobile home park nearly leveled by a reported tornado in emerald isle. >> it's like a nuclear wasteland. it was a deafening noise, and then it was gone. >> reporter: one woman in her home as the ferocious winds rip the siding off these condos. >> all of a sudden the windows broke loose. everything was swirling in our bedroom. >> reporter: the intensity of dorian's dangerous storm surge put surfside beach, south carolina under water thursday making way for treacherous

driving conditions and homes to be surrounded by water. the water continues to pile up. when we have high tide later today it's going to be inundating parts of this area and all the way up north towards virginia beach, norfolk, downtown and tropical storm warnings are posted for eastern new england and parts of the cape and islands there. so this is not quite done. the tornado risk we had yesterday not quite as bad today but we're certainly going to see wind damage, likely trees down and power lines. the only silver lining for this storm once painfully slow, finally picking up speed. cecilia. >> that surf there is really something. rob, thank you. the bahamas, of course, still reeling from dorian. the official death toll climbing to 30 and now the health minister says the final count will be, quote, staggering, and that's because thousands of people could still be missing there. victor oquendo traveled with an emergency air ambulance to deliver supplies. he joins us now from miami

beach. good morning, victor. >> reporter: good morning, cecilia. help is on the way, and they definitely need it, but even though the bahamas are so close to us here in south florida, getting in can be a challenge. right before we landed in freeport our pilot told us the tower is out and the navy has to coordinate who flies in and out from a nearby ship. overnight, the death toll rising five days after hurricane dorian left its mark on the bahamas. officials say at least 30 people have now been pronounced dead with the fear the final death toll will be staggering. >> everybody is, like, in a state of shock right now. we lost everything. so right now just, like, in survival mode right now. >> everything in abaco is totally destroyed. it literally looks like we were bombed. >> reporter: we flew with trinity air ambulance to grand bahama with supplies collected by our miami affiliate wplg. from above, everywhere you look, large debris litters the island. hurricane dorian tore apart the

hangars at this airport, and take a look through. that small plane, looks like it was cut in half. the devastation triggering widesp since hurricane dorian made landfall, the coast guard have rescued more than 200 people even providing food to those left stranded. >> today, this morning, we were down on a couple of remote islands and we came across one. there were about 150 people on the island. it was completely devastated. >> reporter: other residents left to sift through what remains of their lives. >> this is like the master bedroom, the bathroom, the living room and there's another bedroom. >> all of it is gone. >> gone. >> reporter: we met gino daniels whose home was completely destroyed. what was inside is scattered across the lawn. how scary was that? >> it was pretty scary but during that you don't have time to be scared. you're in survival mode and doing what you can do and save what you can save. >> reporter: amid the disaster, he tells us he plans on rebuilding. >> still hard to see all what you've been accumulating over the years just completely washed

away. >> reporter: residents in freeport say at this point the emotional toll is worse than the physical. one woman told me that this hasn't been hell on earth but hell on water. george. >> we are feeling for them. okay, victor, thanks very much. we move to the wildfire in southern california. new evacuations have been ordered as the flames close in on homes. clayton sandell is on the scene in murrieta, good morning, clayton. >> reporter: good morning, george. you can see how much jeopardy these houses were in. this is where air tankers came swooping in dropping this red fire retardant everywhere all part of a desperate fight to stop the flames. this morning, a massive firefight coming within feet of homes in southern california. the blaze scorching close to 2,000 acres in riverside county 80 miles southeast of los angeles. a thick blanket of smoke and ash falling on nearby neighborhoods. more than 500 homes are evacuated, but retired l.a. county firefighter john samrin

and his son refused to abandon this home despite nearly being surrounded engulfing the backyard. >> it was surreal. felt like it was a thousand-degree oven. it was crazy. >> reporter: cal fire coming to the rescue stopping flames just in time. across town firefighters sprinted from house to house desperately trying to keep the flames at bay. 800 firefighters on the ground and in the air. authorities say difficult terrain and constantly changing winds are making the fire an extreme challenge. >> the winds will come out of one direction in the morning and then by the afternoon, we'll get an 180-degree switch. >> reporter: officials now urging residents to avoid breathing the smokey, polluted air. all that smoke is one reason why schools are closed. officially this fire is only 20% contained but the big worry today, the return of high winds, michael. >> all right, big worry, indeed. clayton, thank you so much.

now we want to turn to those rising concerns about vaping. a second death possibly linked to it. oregon health officials say the person died after using a device that contained marijuana. abc's janai norman is here with the details. good morning, janai. >> reporter: good morning. we have heard a lot about vaping and a second death linked to vaping. this time in oregon. officials say the patient was otherwise healthy and quickly became very ill, developing a severe lung illness after the device which contained thc from a recreational marijuana shop. officials haven't revealed the person's age or gender, and they haven't determined what sickened the adult or whether the person may have added something to the liquid or tampered with the device after it was purchased but officials say the symptoms were consistent with those of more than 200 cases of a mysterious respiratory illness linked to vaping including difficulty breathing, chest pain, vomiting and fatigue. fda investigators have reportedly found the same chemical in samples of some marijuana products used by some people who have gotten sick

across the country. in a statement to abc news the fda saying identifying any compounds that are present in the samples will be one piece of the puzzle but will not necessarily answer questions about causality so, guys, so many questions still around vaping. >> every day a new story. >> absolutely. >> you learn something every day, thanks. we turn to that airline arrest. a mechanic taken into custody accused of sabotaging a passenger plane instead of fixing it and david kerley there at reagan international airport with the story. good morning, david. >> reporter: good morning, cecilia. this is an extremely serious charge. it is willfully destroying, damaging or disabling an aircraft. this happened to an american airlines jet preparing to take off when the pilots noticed something wrong. it happened in miami, which is an american hub and the federal charges say that the mechanic used a styrofoam material and some super glue to block a port leading to part of the jet's flight data system. now, a tube is supposed to be attached to that port and that's

providing critical data on air speed and which way the nose is pointed. at the runway the pilots revved the engine and got a warning light so they returned to the terminal with all 150 on board. now, american found the alteration. this happened in mid july, and they got to surveillance video and were able to identify the mechanic. his name is abdul-majeed alani and he admitted that he did try to disable this aircraft. >> such a disturbing allegation. you're hearing that money might have been the motive. >> reporter: yeah, that's what he says in the interview and federal court documents. american has been locked in a union battle with its mechanics union for some time. the mechanic said he's been frustrated by that and it was costing him money and hoping to get overtime by sabotaging this aircraft, cecilia. >> david, thank you. george. there are new developments in the tragic boat fire off the coast of california that killed 34 people. the owner of the boat is

speaking out for the first time about the accident, the crew and the passengers who lost their lives. will carr has the story. >> i just wanted to reach out to this community and let them know how we feel. >> reporter: glen fritzler's dive boat caught fire early morning and trapped 34 people below deck. the tragedy is now considered the deadliest domestic boat incident in decades. the cause still unknown. >> captain jerry remained on the boat as long as he possibly could trying to get those radio calls in. they said they could see jerry jump from the upper deck, long jump, and that there was a trail of smoke following him. they thought he was on fire. >> reporter: according to fritzler they say they tried to save the passengers but the flames pushed them back. >> within minutes they would have been consumed. >> reporter: the victims only had two ways out of their bunk room, a staircase and an emergency hatch. in this newly released ntsb video, you can see an investigator struggle to get through an emergency hatch over a bunk bed on a similar boat

owned by the same company. as a result, federal investigators now say it would have been difficult for 34 people to safely get away from a fire burning on board in the middle of the night. >> would you feel comfortable sleeping in that bunk room? >> i think i would have concerns. >> reporter: well, the owner of the boat is offering his condolences. he just filed a lawsuit under a pre-civil war maritime law to try to prevent his liability. the timing of that lawsuit is being called into question by some members of this community, michael. >> a lot of questions from the community. thank you so much. we turn now to that sweet victory for serena williams, cruising her way to the u.s. open final with a straight set win overnight. now she is preparing for a final showdown, and t.j. holmes is here. >> preparing for a showdown, preparing for history. this is it now. serena could possibly pick up grand slam title number 24, tieing the all-time record. that could be on saturday.

good morning. the chase center in san francisco will host the first concert ever. metallica is performing. a ribbon cutting ceremony was held on tuesday and metallica has been tweeting about the concert calling it a must-see event. the concert is said to be sold out, but we checked online. there are some tickets left. but they start at $300. all right. and the drive time on the east shore freeway down to the maze is 49 minutes. slow but not bad considering we had a fatal accident and injury crash along the east shore freeway. the bay bridge toll plaza is backed up.

immigration counter and had it not been for an airline employee who stopped her at the gate before she was boarding she may have gotten away with it. we're seeing new images of jennifer talbot cuddling the baby that philippines police say she was attempting to smuggle out of the country. police say this video shows talbot who lives in utah pulling a 6-day-old baby out of her sling as she goes through airport security to catch her flight back to the united states. >> a female national of america trying to slip an infant out of the country, a 6-day-old infant and the baby had no travel documents. >> reporter: talbot dressed in an orange detainee shirt was arrested and charged with human trafficking. the 43-year-old mother of five faces a potential penalty of life imprisonment in the philippines. >> she passed the immigration counter without declaring the baby. they did not see the baby because she was carrying the baby in a bag.

>> reporter: police say she successfully cleared the immigration counter but as she was getting ready to board her flight she was asked by airline personnel about her oversized sling. >> based on the instruction on the bag it should be carried in front in an upright position. but then it was not carried that way so there was really an intention to conceal and to sneak out the baby. >> reporter: talbot was accused of failing to present travel clearance issued by the department of social welfare or written consent from the babies' parents. the infant turned over to government welfare personnel. according to the philippines bureau of investigation, she met the baby's biological mother on the internet. authorities identifying her as maricris dulap. dulap telling police, she wanted to offer her baby up for adoption, but now she is facing charges for human trafficking along with the unnamed biological father.

talbot has reached out to the u.s. embassy for help, and told authorities she has no criminal background in the u.s. but the case may take years to resolve. if she's convicted she faces a possible life sentence which would be served in the philippines but could take years for this to be resolved. thanks. >> thank you. we turn to the 8-year-old who survived a mountain lion attack in his own backyard in colorado. now pike carlson is telling his story for the very first time. our will reeve is here with more on this, and boy, this is one brave kid, will. >> reporter: brave and with a sense of humor about it too, cecilia. the carlson family lives in a rural part of colorado but say they had never seen a mountain lion around their home. now after near tragedy they'll probably never want to see one again. an 8-year-old child counting his blessings this morning after a lucky escape from the grip of a mountain lion. pieks pike carlson was with his older brother gage playing in

t.j. holmes is back with more. hey, t.j. >> reporter: we know high school football is huge in texas. every game seems like a big game. this was different because you have one team from a community devastated by a mass shooting playing against a team representing the high school where the alleged shooter graduated. what do you do with that? initially they thought we can't play this game but ultimately decided this game must go on. a high school football game uniting two communities. players from el paso's eastwood high school and plano senior high embraced at the start of the game. >> luke aganga, touchdown. eastwood! >> reporter: their cities forever linked after the el paso mass shooting that claimed the lives of 22 people. the alleged gunman a 2017 graduate of plano senior high. the game was initially canceled 12 days after the tragedy. plano high school citing security concerns, but that decision drew national attention and eventually the game was back on after the dallas cowboys

north carolina, with the latest. good morning, rob. >> reporter: good morning again, cecilia. with hurricane dorian having made landfall to our south and now moving in that direction, we just had the winds turn on us which tells us the eye is nearly abreast of our latitude. it also brings a whole slew of problems along with the rain and the wind and obviously the waves that are moving onshore. now on the backside of this we're seeing some flood inundation from the backside storm surge flooding and a flooding issue has been warned. we're seeing a rise of five-plus feet in a matter of minutes. as these winds continue to switch, that storm surge on both sides of these land masses is going to be an issue from cape lookout all the way up to virginia beach for sure. yesterday we had a slew of tornados touch down, over a dozen of them doing damage.

the mind/body connection when it comes to losing weight. >> it's so important. i call it a holistic connection because there has to be -- you have to be in sync with those things and understand, yes, there are extremes of weight, under and overweight, that aren't healthy. i want to be clear. you can't say, well, you know, i'm morbidly obese and that's fine but you have to make sure that you're seeking health for the right reason and that's your internal health and wellness much more than it is the number on your jeans or the scale. >> it becomes a lifestyle. you have good tips for people who want to do this the right way. >> i call the three ss. for any healthy eating plan things have to be safe, simple and they have to be sustainable. i think when you are embarking on any type of a weight management, healthy weight gain or weight loss, you have to look at eating from the farm, not the factory. you want to limit the processed foods. anything that can stay on the shelf through a nuclear holocaust you want to try to avoid. and i'd feel better and then i'd get the kids to bed and then i would drink like the rest of the bottle and start on another one. >> so a bottle and maybe a bottle and a half? >> right. >> she says the stresses of mothering led her to secretly keep filling her glass. >> pretty much from the time i woke up i was thinking about the glass of wine i was going to have and i couldn't wait. >> reporter: the daily drinking taking a toll on her family. >> the unfortunate part is that my children and husband bore the brunt of my true alcoholic behavior and i was not a good mother. i was not a good wife. >> reporter: even at age 6 her oldest, maverick, was well aware. >> did you know she was drinking a lot of win?. >> well, i did know that because like i didn't know it was out of the ordinary because that's how i grew up. that's what i was used to. >> reporter: finally her best friend and writing partner audrey hayworth called her out.

you want to work on a positive relationship with yourself. now, a lot of moms have told me they drink to fill a void or mask other emotions. that's something they began to work through. some with getting sobriety counselors and getting help so you also want to find an authentic friend group. if you're with a group and have to drink every time you're with them, you need a new mom squad. they should help you through whatever struggles you're working with. avoid getting overwhelmed. it's easier said than done but you know, know your bandwidth. a lot of people feel like they have to have those pinterest perfect holidays or join every school community. say no. your sanity and sense of calm is very important to you and your kids. >> a lot of good advice. thanks very much. you can see more on "nightline." we'll be right back. see more on "nightline." we'll be right back.

a spot of clearing around san ♪ welcome back to "gma," everybody. and we've got a great update on one of our stories from tell t.j. celebrating the unsung heroes around the country. >> we're excited about this. last fall you'll remember t.j. brought us this incredible moment when a man who needed a kidney transplant was surprised when he met his donor. it turns out it was his neighbor and it all happened live right here. well, you will never believe what that inspired for one "gma" viewer to do. t.j. is back to tell us more on this. >> reporter: i got so many viewers write in to complain after that story aired. they complained, t.j., i just finished putting my makeup on. you got me crying and now i got to do my makeover again.

you couldn't help but get emotional watching that story, but one viewer got inspired then got up and made the decision to save another life. >> wow. >> today is fabulous. they're such great friends. >> reporter: last fall, we introduced you to dave and nancy, neighbors and friends from ohio. dave diagnosed with a serious kidney disease that required a transplant. >> that's when he said we need to get you on dialysis and that's when it's like, oh, man. really didn't want to go there. >> he was definitely scared. i could tell by the look in his eyes. >> reporter: desperately searching for a donor, dave didn't realize one was pretty close by. yes, his neighbor, nancy. she stepped up and went to get tested to sigh if she was a match. >> i jumped at the chance to do this. not knowing that i was going to be a match. you think about being a match but you're thinking, how could i be a match? >> reporter: nancy ultimately revealed she was the donor right here on "gma."

little did we know our story would inspire others to step up and one of those is jeannine russell. >> i watched the story and it definitely moved me. i was -- brought me to tears, us me tohink, well, if they can do it, why can't i do that? why can't i make a difference? >> reporter: jeannine shared her feelings with her family and her daughter told her about a co-worker in need of a transplant. >> i received a call from the doctor stating that i can't wait any more. i can't wait for a donor to step up. >> reporter: so jeannine didn't hesitate. she offered to become the lifeline to a woman she had never met. >> all i could think about is this is something that i think i can do, and it's something that i want to do. >> reporter: the surgery was a success and two days after the

procedure sone met her donor for the first time. >> thank you so much. >> you saved my life. and i wouldn't be here had she not sacrificed that for me. she is heaven sent. she's my angel. >> t.j. took me in a place that i couldn't even imagine. i would never ever ever imagine that i could have done this and it empowered me to be able to do it. [ applause ] >> guys, in our careers we've done countless stories and come and go and we just told one guy's story and now a humbling experience to think something we did here moved somebody to save another life. we talk about transplants and that organ transplant list. there are 110,000 to 115,000 waiting for a transplant. i just -- happened to be in our audience. crystal is over here.

and, crystal, she is wearing a shirt that says looking for mr. right or left. how long have you been on the waiting list? >> i've been on the list for three years. >> this is what happens. crystal, thank you. she looks healthy. she's doing okay today but we have 20 people die in this country every single year on that waiting list. so the need is so great. living donors are important. talk yo your doctor. there are health risks involved, but if you want to try to save a life, you can do it right now by going in. it's not just that card that says organ donor, but it's something to consider because folks are waiting every single day for folks who never come sometimes. >> thank you for telling the story. >> hey, it was an absolute honor. >> tell t.j. coming up, tamron hall is here live. we'll be right back. [ applause ] and there's so much, so much to congratulate you on. and within the past two years, boy, you have been busy. you got married. you had a baby. you stepped away from tv for a little bit, and now you're launching a new show.

congratulations on all that, but i want to know, are you getting any sleep? >> i'm trying. i'm trying to balance it all but it's a work in progress. people have asked how are you balancing it? i'm not. there have been days i've been in the corner crying and saying, i'm a bad mom. wait a minute. what am i doing or in the studio and someone is talking about a show idea and all i can think about is that face. >> baby moses. >> but the best of my experience come from people giving me advice. other moms -- when i first had my baby, my friend lisa said, you know, the nurses will want to take him into the nursery because i had a c-section. you're going to want to keep him. let them take him. get the rest that you need so the first night i was like, no, this is my baby. the second night, i was like, bye, boo. i'll see you later. we got 18 years. and it was the best advice and that just came from my friend opening up saying, my mother advice to you is to let him go get that rest because you have

to take care of yourself and those are the things we're talking about on the show. the best of who we are we get from other people. >> that's right. moses is 5 months old now. >> he's 4. trying to age my baby? >> trying to speed up that 18 years. he's 4 months old. you've been very open about fertility issues you had but had him at 48 years old so to me what is the biggest surprise about being a mom and what surprised you most about him? >> you hear parents say, i never knew i could love someone so much. you know, the other day he was crying, i'm like, what's wrong -- you're running around and all of a sudden just like when i was -- he's like, wink, smile. you got me man. wrapped around your finger. it's also -- my mother was a single mom at 19, and immediately she rushed in on a plane. she came in from texas and as a woman who watch my mother care for my son and care for me, i've always -- she's always been my best friend but i didn't know i could love her so much as a

woman. i started crying watching my mom hold my son. her mom died when she was 10 and so now she's a grandmom and she can give all of that love and battle as a single mom, and for meha will cry these lashes off in front of y'all right now. >> i can tell,i'm sure your show will reflect this. looking it at the promos talked about what you've gone through in your life and some of the struggles and things you say you'll embrace on the show. what can we expect? >> i want people to -- when they see the show to see themselves. i'm a kid from texas who ended up walking past the "today" show saying i want to work there and that dream came true because of the love my family poured into me just like you. even though you're this tall, strapping, wonderful guy now, we were not always the kid that people bet on. most can identify with that. we want to take you on this journey and talk about it.

whatever it is, a relationship. we say the first thing someone will ask, who are you dating. i do you want to date? i got a cousin. we'll talk about that. the highs and lows and what it means to date when you are 45 or be on tinder or facebook dating, whatever that story was. what do i do? i don't know. we want to talk to people and meet people where they are. i want to set a table and you can come to my table with any kind of chair you have. a high chair, barca lounger. i'm from texas, a lawn chair. whatever you got. i want you to feel included. in the end if we just talk to people and look them in the eye and take off our masks and let them take off theirs, we can talk about anything.
