kraumped bunk room below deck and fire blocked their escape routes. hello and thank you for joining us. i'm eric thomas. >> i'm dion lim. a runway clocher at sfo causing another round of delays and cancelations. >> it has frustrated travellers and this is just the first weekend of the work. >> abc 7 news reporter kate larsen joins us before from sfo with the latest on the impact the closure has on today's air travel, kate? >> reporter: dion, eric, this is just day two of the 28-day runway construction and closure. sfo and construction workers chose this 20-daytime period because it's after the summer rush and before the holidays and it doesn't usually rain. but this doesn't take the sting out of the hundreds of delays and cancelations that travelers have been dealing with this

weekend. take a look, here are the numbers. sfo officials tell me today 298 flight delays, 129 cancelations. that's for both international and domestic arrivals and departures. those numbers are already about 20% higher than yesterday's delays and cancelations. take a look, because that all translates to this. people sleeping in lounge chairs and waiting in lines to beg gate agents for decent flights to much-needed destinations. the arrivals and departure boards are full of cancelations and changing times. now sfo said that they expected flight delays to average 30 to 45 minutes, but people are spoke to this afternoon say they're dealing with delays between three and seven hours. >> we got delayed for our first flight. then another notification, another notification. and turns out about four hours later, they said we'll rebook you on another flight. >> i tried changing

destinations. they said that that wasn't possible. >> what are you going to do for seven hours? >> i have my phone. i'm probably going to be netflixing. >> hope you have a charger too. >> yes, i have a charger too. >> i called american and they said that they had planned construction for the runway, and therefore a bunch of flights were delayed. but it does beg the question, it seems like this was planned a long time ago, so. >> reporter: why are there so many delays if everyone knew about the runway construction this month? sfo seth they worked with airlines to reduce flights by 13% during the 28 days of runway closure. sfo officials point out most of the flights are still on time, and they're right. i did the math, added 1,300 daily flights. so far just about 70% are unaffected. best to keep in task with your airline if you are flying between now and september 27th in or out of sfo because that's

when this is suspected to be over. if you need to book travel between now and then, your best bet is to get a flight before 9:00 a.m. if you plan on flying british airways, there's a chance your flight might not take off at all. the airline is preparing to cancel nearly all its flights tomorrow and tuesday due to a possible pilot strike. contract talks have broken down leading to a possible walkout. the carrier operats about 850 flights daily. this would be british airways' first pilot strike since the 1970s and could cost the airline nearly $50 million a day. we now know a small plane that crashed after takeoff last night near las vegas was headed for southern california. two people died and three others were hurt when that plane went down shortly after taking off from henderson executive airport. investigators say it was headed to el cajon east of san diego. the victims' names have not been released but we do know one of

the a good samaritan who suffered from smoke inhalation while trying to rescue them. meantime a man who is been arrested accused of starting a wildfire yesterday near kelseyville in lake county that destroyed a building. cal fire says the oak fire burned 53 acres near highway twa 29 and is fully contained. cal fire plans on keeping crews on the scene for a few days to make sure it does not flare up. san francisco wants to be a power broker when it comes to electricity. it's looking to buy all of pg&e's power lines within the schedule and provide its own service to residents. the price tag is huge. abc 7 news reporter cornell bernard is live in san francisco with details and what it means for customers. >> reporter: you know that power does not come cheap. the city is ready to offer more than $2 billion for pg&e's power grid here in san francisco.

all of these lines, thousands of them, some say the takeover could mean lower rates for customers. >> other cities and counties have done it. this is not a radical thing. >> reporter: supervisor matt haynie is ready to dump pg&e. he says the city will offer the utility $2.5 billion for its power line system across the city and provide its own power to residents perhaps at a lower rate. >> this is an opportunity for us to own our own grid. not have a private company have a monopoly on it. >> reporter: revenue bonds would pay for the purchase. the city is already providing electricity to thousands through the clean power sf program by purchasing renewable energy from sources and using pg&e's lines to get to it homes. >> if san francisco takes over, that will be good. and if it lowers the rate, that will be much better. >> for people who have to have electricity and gas, they don't need to -- their money to go to shareholders and pg&e. >> reporter: with pg&e in

bankruptcy, this may be an offer it can't refuse. proceeds from the sale could help the utility pay victims of deadly northern california wildfires started by power lines. in a statement to abc 7 news, the company says pg&e has been a part of san francisco since the company's founding and while we don't believe municipalization is in the best interests of our customers and stakeholders, we are committed to working with the city. but not everyone like the takeover idea. the international brotherhood of electrical workers, a union for some pg&e employees, says the city has other priorities to deal with. its website says this takeover will make san francisco worse, not better, we take safety very seriously, we just don't trust the people who can't make the buses run on time and can't clean the streets. we likely haven't heard the last from unions on this matter. mayor and city attorney leading the purchase offe eroffer, supe will vote later this month. if it goes through pg&e would

still provide gas service to customers. new developments with the two bay area teenagers accused of stabbing to death a police officer in rome, italy. the lawyer for fin elder says he's dropped a request yesterday for his client to be released. in a statement the lawyer said he needs more time to get a better idea of what exactly happened. elder and gabe yorth have been in jail since july when officers say they stabbed an officer during a scuffle. prosecutors say the two were trying to sell a backpack in exchange for money and cocaine. yesterday's third annual gun buy-back program is set up to reduce the availability of unwanted, unsafe, and illegal guns in the community. those who surrendered firearms got $400 for assault weapons and $100 for handguns. asset forfeitures and community

building a better bay area. one of the central issues we've been focusing on is housing. we know the bay area has some of the highest rents and housing markets. concord may be taking a big step forward in making a solution on tuesday night. the concord naval station is owned by the u.s. coast guard and the city would need to buy it first. the city wants a deal by early next year and have a developer

turn 58 acres into housing. on tuesday the city council will provide an update on its negotiations. a colorado family is talking about a terrifying encounter with a mountain lion. >> last month 8-year-old pike carlson was playing on the family's trampoline when a neighbor called him over. pike began to walk through a wooded area when he saw the big cat. >> right when i yelled for help, it pounced on me. and me and the mountain lion rolled down the hill. >> and it was just chewing on him. all you know is that your child is in danger. and you can't let that continue. >> pike's dad who you heard there ran to help. the mountain lion took off but not before cracking pike's skull, jaw, and over bital bone. it required 52 staples and he will need surgery but doctors say he will be okay.

it was time to celebrate everything muni this weekend, especially its history. >> the san francisco railway museum was open for younger fans of the historic rail system and for older san franciscans who wanted to relive muni's historic fleet of cable cars, buses, and street cars. >> here you can relive what it was like to take a steam train to the cliff house, for example, or a cable car all the way to golden gate park. that same cable car is running on california street today. 136 years old. there's no other city that lets you do that. >> pretty cool. the san francisco railway museum is located on stewart seet and is open tuesday through sunday, admission is free. dozens of people gathered in the streets of san francisco's tenderloin district to get to knot historic neighborhood, as well as each other. >> the tenderloin is such a
