three this week. >> our latest abc news poll shows three candidates in double digits with former vice president joe biden still leading the pack at 27%. senator bernie sanders is in close second followed closely by senator elizabeth warren, who had the biggest surge. thursday will be the first time all three top candidates will share the debate stage. abc's rachel scott has more from new hampshire. >> reporter: in the race for president, momentum growing for a surging senator elizabeth warren, charging into this week's crucial debate where she'll face off against two of her biggest rivals on the same stage for the first time. here in new hampshire, bringing thousands to their feet with a two-minute standing ovation. i asked what was behind her recent rise. >> i think it's because i get out and talk about what's broken. and have real plans to fix it. >> reporter: according to that new abc news/"washington post"

poll, she's up 6 points since july. warren is closing in on former vice president joe biden and senator bernie sanders. but the big question, who can defeat president trump? biden with an even bigger advantage over warren and sanders with 42% of likely democratic voters believing he can win. >> oh, new hampshire! >> reporter: the former vice president making a general election pitch here in manchester, and fumbling an attack on the president. >> but if donald hump -- donald trump is re-elected -- [ laughter ] freudian slip. >> reporter: you'll be in between sanders and warren on that debate stage. how do you make sure your message breaks through? >> that's not hard, breaking through. >> reporter: the new hampshire primary, the nation's first, five months away. but nearly the entire remaining democratic field campaigning here this weekend, including sanders, who soundly defeated hillary clinton here in 2016. with the three front-runners all in their 70s, younger democrats told me they believe it's their turn. >> what i hear out there is people are ready for a new generation of leadership.

>> i'm going to go out and be myself, that's really the most important thing. >> i'm feeling very good about where my campaign is. >> reporter: for half of likely democratic voters, it doesn't matter hot standard bearer is, they'll support anyone they think can defeat president trump. >> electability is my number one concern. >> i would vote for anybody who can -- i think can beat donald trump. >> reporter: and i asked senator warren if her rise in the polls will make her a target on the debate stage. she told me she wasn't sure, but regardless, she doesn't really plan on changing her debate approach. she sees this as an opportunity to tell voters directly about her vision for the country and she plans to stick to that message. rachel scott, abc news, manchester. >> a big thanks to rachel scott there. abc news will be hosting this thursday's democratic debate in houston. george stephanopoulos, david muir, linsey davis, and univision's jorge ramos will be moderating beginning at 8:00 p.m. right here on abc. a shout-out to rachel scott who got a big promotion last week. president trump is facing another republican challenger.

former south carolina governor and congressman mark sanford has entered the race. >> sanford acknowledged his bid is a long shot but he said his party has lost its way and needs to have a conversation about what it means to be a republican. sanford lost his re-election bid for congress after criticizing trump. he's the third republican to challenge the president in the 2020 gop primary. the future of peace talks aimed at ending the war in afghanistan is uncertain after president trump canceled a secret meeting with the taliban at camp david. the president said he called off plans to host taliban and afghan leaders following a suicide bombing in kabul that killed a u.s. soldier. democrats and some republicans have criticized the white house for even considering holding the meeting at the presidential retreat as the 9/11 anniversary approaches. four crew members of a cargo ship that overturned and caught fire off the georgia coast are missing this morning. 20 people on "the golden ray" were rescued. the missing were last seen in the engine room of the massive 656-foot carrier. all the crew members are from south korea.

the fire is now out and black smoke is no longer visible. teams are trying to stabilize the vessel so rescue efforts can resume. the ship was leaving brunswick when it drastically leaned to its side early sunday. there's no word yet on what caused the fire. multiple agencies are working with the coast guard. so far officials say no pollutants are being released into the water, but that could change. frustration and desperation is growing in the bahamas as the death toll climbs amid an urgent need for aid. at least 45 people are now dead. officials fear that some victims were washed out to sea and may never be found. >> evacuation efforts are under way with 3,500 people relocated to nassau so far. meanwhile residents of the abaco islands say the government is failing to provide assistance and prevent looting. abc's mona kosar abdi has more. >> reporter: the devastating on ab evacuate.

>> this boat is going to take making sure this woman and her children made it safely onto one of the boats. >> i said, lord, it has to be the day for me to get on the boat with these children, they cannot stay here. greetedly family and friends as they arrived in nassau. >> a lot of people died, and i thought i was going to be one of them. we just started praying and everything and then we survived. >> reporter: officials assuring everyone nassau has ample room for evacuees through various shelter programs. others looking for safe haven heading to the u.s. a cruise ship bringing more than 1,000 to palm beach, florida. those staying behind on the abacos are waiting for food and supplies. the distribution poses a challenge. >> we are exploring every option via helicopter, via boat, to bring constant relief to those areas. >> reporter: and while water in many areas is unsafe for consumption or hygiene, every effort is being made to prevent the spread of disease. >> potable water is being provided. we have the people on the ground

we are back with dramatic video of deputies rescuing passengers on a sailboat in los angeles. gale-force winds drove the boat onto the rocks off marina del ray. small craft warnings were posted at the time. those deputies risked their own lives to get the three passengers off the sailboat despite the storm. turning to the firestorm in the nfl involving one of the league's top players and one of the most controversial. >> abc's kaylee hartung explains
