♪ making news in america this morning. the desperate search right now after a cargo ship catches fire and capsizes off the coast of georgia. some of its crew members still missing. >> it is a complex situation. >> stunning images of the massive ship on its side as investigators try to determine what went wrong. frustration building. a week after hurricane dorian slams into the bahamas. >> just, that's all. >> the humanitarian crisis now reaching a breaking point as the death toll rises overnight. police praising a teenager for cracking a cold case that's haunted them for decades. the teen's gopro video uncovering the mystery at the bottom of a murky lake. plus, the terrifying crash sending a race car driver

tumbling through the air. >> that is a horrific site. >> how he walked away after going airborne. a blast from the past. why sony is releasing a new walkman. >> and from tom brady's performance. >> and wide, wide open. >> to the game that ended in a tie. the player wearing a watch worth hundreds of thousands of dollars on the field. we have the most talked about moments from the nfl on this monday. good monday morning, everyone. thank you for joining us. we begin with four crew members still missing, more than 24 hours after their cargo ship capsized off the coast of georgia. >> the nearly 700-foot ship called "the golden ray" was about to depart for baltimore when it make a turn and eventually flipped on its side. the fire is out and the black smoke is no longer visible, but

the ship needs to be stabilized before rescue crews can search inside. >> ines de la cutera is joining us with the latest. >> reporter: good morning, janai and kenneth. the ship is partially lost off the coast of georgia. and rescue workers are trying to figure out how to safely get to four crew members still missing at sea at the st. simons sound after the massive cargo ship nearly capsized. >> i just want to confirm this is the vessel "golden ray," the cargo ship that capsized. there's no way to get on board. >> reporter: officials say just after it departed florida around 2:00 a.m. on sunday, golden ray" made a turn, toppled over and burst into flames. >> as smoke and flames started to appear, our crews along with the glenn county rescue team assessed the situation was too risky to further go inside the vessel. >> reporter: the coast guard deploying helicopters and boats to try and rescue the 24 people on board. dramatic video shows them lifting a crew member to safety in the dead of night.

>> all vessels are equipped to keep a sharp look out, assist if possible. >> reporter: 20 people were safely evacuated before investigators decided the fire made it too risky to keep going. authorities are now intensely working on stabilizing the leaning vessel so they can continue rescue operations. >> we brought in a team of experts to start working to effect the rescue but do it safely while keeping a mindful eye to the safety of the rescuers and responders to make sure we don't make the problem worse. >> reporter: officials say the four missing crew members were on watch in the engine room when the incident happened. >> we're doing everything we can to get the last four members off. >> and, guys, a local newspaper is reporting that the coast guard is detecting tapping noises that could be coming from inside the vessel from the four missing crew members. janai, kenneth. >> ines, thank you for joining us. we turn now to the crisis in the bahamas following hurricane

dorian. the death toll now stands at 45. forensic investigators are searching debris for victims. officials fear that some victims were washed out to sea and may never be found. abc's marcus moore is in the bahamas. >> reporter: frustration building, a week after dorian stormed into many communities including elbow key where it first made landfall. >> the government ain't here doing it. we doing it, just [ bleep ] that's all. that's all we're asking for. we ain't asking nothing much. >> reporter: many upset, blaming red tape for holding back critical supplies to the islands of abaco and grand bahama. as america's first responders continue to evacuate the sick and wounded. we met frank knowles in front of his house. >> we left in the eye thankfully, and when we left in the eye, it was very much intact. >> reporter: his family now heading to the u.s. to stay with relatives. his wife will have to figure out where to send their kids to school. >> we had each other accounted for.

there was no guesswork. my dad and sister, i haven't heard from them yet. >> reporter: were they going to stay at their house? >> they were staying there. they were there up until the eye when we them. >> reporter: his dad and sister among the potential thousands who are missing. and the destruction is all around here in marsh harbor. you can see it right here, trees have been snapped. homes and businesses torn apart. and boats and cars tossed around either by dorian's extreme winds or that massive storm surge that left this island community in ruins. thousands fleeing the affected islands where officials say food distribution is a challenge. all of this as the bahamian government grapples with the mounting death toll. >> every single person we intend to account for. >> reporter: is there a chance that some of the victims we're talking about were swept away in the ocean? >> yes. >> reporter: and perhaps may never be found? >> yes. >> reporter: much of marsh harbor where we rode out the this time a week ago is a ghost town. so many people have left to go to other bahama islands or

others. but as aid continues to arrive there are so many unaccounted for as the death toll continues to rise. marcus moore, abc news, marsh harbor, bahamas. to the race of 2020 with former vice president joe biden still leading the pack ahead of debate number three. the latest abc news/"washington post". shows biden favored by 27% of likely democratic voters. senator sanders and elizabeth warren running neck and neck at 19% and 17%. remaining candidates are in singles digits, warren, sanders and biden will share the stage for the first time this thursday when abc news hosts the democratic debate. in houston, texas. george stephanopoulos, david muir, linsey davis will be moderating right here at 8:00 p.m. on abc. president trump was planning a secret meeting with the taliban at camp david before abruptly calling it off. democrats and some republicans are criticizing the president

for even considering holding the peace talks. and as the 9/11 anniversary approaches, the president was hoping for an agreement to end the war in afghanistan, but pulled the plug citing last week's suicide attack that killed a u.s. soldier. secretary of state mike pompeo said taliban leaders were not negotiating in good faith. >> the taliban overreached, they killed an american in an effort to gain leverage at the negotiating table. and president trump said enough. >> the president had talked about bringing as many as 5,000 troops home in the coming months. but it's now unclear whether that will happen. breaking overnight, a pilot strike has grounded almost all british airways flights for 48 hours. the pilots are striking over pay. british airways says its offer of 11.3% increase over three years is fair, but the pilots union disagrees. british airways operates more than 800 flights per day and says the work stoppage affects

we're back with this video of passengers evacuating a cayman air jet in orlando. a warning light indicated smoke in the cargo hold. the 103 passengers and 5 crew members were on their way from grand cayman to new york. no one was injured. the passengers will put on another flight today. there are new developments in the boat fire that killed 34 people off the coast of southern california. state and federal agencies including the fbi have executed search warrants. to the company that owned the dive boat. investigators are looking for training and safety and maintenance records. dive teams are hoping to resume their search for the one remaining victim tomorrow. dozens of volunteers and rescue crews are scouring the mountains on hawaii's big island to intensify the search for a missing hiker.

kyle britton was last seen ten days ago. his father said he's an experienced hiker but this is his first solo hike. and he wasn't prepared to stay overnight. >> you know, we're starting to look for things we don't want to look for. it's been a week. we're starting to look in the rivers. >> the family says they won't give up hope until they find him. one of the rescuers who joined the rescue helped find amanda ellars 17 days after she went missing. and a new video this morning shows deputies rescuing a after their sailboat. gale force winds drove a boat on to rocks, small craft warnings were posted at the time. everyone on board is okay. sony is releasing a 40th anniversary walkman, the mobile cassette player revolutionized listening to music starting in 1979. there will be two updated versions. but they won't play cassette

could have helped anyone, why not try. >> so max grabbed his gopro and his video gave a closer look. a submerged car in 15 feet of water just off a highway. >> could be a bigger story to something you think is not there. >> max showed divers of local law enforcement where to find the vehicle, and they discovered a grim answer to a 27-year-old mystery. >> came back to a missing persons back in 1992. >> we were very surprised because it had been so long. >> when we initially heard that there was somebody in that vehicle, my heart just sank. >> inside the car, a woman's body, identified as janet ferris who went missing in 1992, while driving to a wedding. >> i couldn't imagine what it would be like for that many years, not understanding whatever happened to a loved one. >> it was almost it was meant to happen. >> this morning, authorities are praising max for his outstanding detective work and for cracking a cold case many thought would never be solved. >> people will be looking at this guy down the road for potential employment. >> ferris' family said they're grateful for max's discovery. it brings answers to three decades of mystery.

police don't think her death was suspicious. now to a health alert to a rare virus spread by mosquitos. a 50-year-old michigan woman died from the virus called eastern equine encephalitis or eee. one person died from a virus in massachusetts. and a 5-year-old girl is among the seven people in the state with eee. abc's dr. jen ashton explains why health officials are on alert. >> if you get eee with these symptoms, fever, headache, restlessness, there's a 30% mortality rate. there is no treatment. there is no cure. the care is just supportive and that's why this is getting so much attention. >> the virus has been found in mosquitos across the east and mid-atlantic states. the best protection is protective clothing and avoiding standing water. a pennsylvania's couple big spending spree has led to felony charges. police say a bank mistakenly deposited $120,000 into their

account. in may. nearly three weeks later, more than 100,000 of it had been spent. prosecutors say the couple promised to work out a repayment plan but stopped responding to the bank's calls. in sports, rafael nadal is the u.s. open tennis champion but he had to work really hard for it. nadal and danil medvedev had to duel before he finally won. he's won his 19th overall, one behind roger federer for the most ever. well now to some headlines from the nfl. this one looks like it was written by a pats fan. the patriots look like a really good team again. the defending champs unveiled their new super bowl banner last night and then absolutely destroyed the steelers. tom brady threw three touchdown passes in new england's 33-3 win. meantime, the lions and cardinals battled to a tie. arizona rallied to an 18-point deficit in the fourth quarter to force overtime.
